Taylor Swift, Jack Harlow Reign Over Australia’s Christmas Charts

Taylor Swift is the queen of Christmas in Australia as 1989 (Taylor’s Version) retains the chart title for an eighth consecutive week.

With that feat, 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (via Universal) is the longest running No. 1 album of 2023, outpointing Swift’s own Midnights, which led for seven non-consecutive weeks between January and July, ARIA reports.

Swift completed unprecedented sweeps on the ARIA Albums Chart during the year, and doubled up on both main tallies. The U.S. pop star’s sales and streaming action should reach fever pitch in February 2024 when Swift’s The Eras Tour visits Australia for seven sold-out stadium shows, produced by Frontier Touring.

Meanwhile, Australian alternative rock favorites Violent Soho return to the ARIA Chart at No. 2 with Hungry Ghost (I Oh You/Universal), their third album. The LP roars up the survey thanks to a 10th anniversary reissue, which eclipses its previous peak of No. 6, during a run when Hungry Ghost logged more than a year in the top 50. Violent Soho, which announced an indefinite hiatus in 2022, has reigned over the ARIA Albums Chart twice: with 2016’s Waco and 2020’s Everything Is A-OK.

Completing Australia’s albums chart podium is Swift’s Midnights, up 4-3; while Michael Bublé’s double-diamond certified Christmas (Reprise/Warner) shines on the national tally, up 8-4. Christmas first hit No. 1 in 2011 and logged 15 weeks at the summit, across six stints, ARIA reports.

Over on the ARIA Singles Chart, Jack Harlow’s “Lovin On Me” (Atlantic/Warner) completes a sixth-straight week at No. 1, handing the Louisville rapper honors as the first new artist in six years to reign over Australia’s chart during the week of Christmas.

With Harlow’s hit getting all the love, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You” (Columbia/Sony) is denied a sixth consecutive Christmas No. 1; it’s up 3-2 on the ARIA Chart, published Friday, Dec. 22, ahead of Tate McRae’s “Greedy” (down 2-3 via RCA/Sony), Wham’s “Last Christmas” (up 5-4 via Sony) and Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” (up 9-5 via Warner/Universal), respectively.

Cher Sets U.K. Chart Records With ‘DJ Play a Christmas Song’

Cher enters the U.K. history books — twice — as “DJ Play a Christmas Song” (via Warner Records) blasts to No. 20 on the national singles tally.

The pop legend’s holiday number vaults 41-20 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, published Dec. 22, meaning Cher becomes the first solo artist to land top 40 hits with new material in seven consecutive decades, and she becomes the oldest female to snag a top tier hit.

At 77 years, 7 months old, Cher is the oldest solo female performer to secure a top 40 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, beating the previous mark set by Shirley Bassey, who was 70 years and 4 months old when “The Living Tree” peaked at No. 37 in 2007.

No other solo artist has achieved a top 40 U.K. hit across seven consecutive decades, the Official Charts Company reports. Cher got the ball rolling with her debut solo single “All I Really Want To Do” from 1965, and has cracked the top 40 every decade since.

“Cher cements her position as a living legend this week, notching up two incredible landmarks,” comments Martin Talbot, CEO of the Official Charts, “becoming the oldest living female to secure a Top 40 single and the only female solo artist to claim an Official Top 40 single in seven consecutive decades.”

The late Captain Sir Tom Moore holds the record for the oldest artist to score a U.K. No. 1 single, doing so at age 99 years and 11 months old when his charity-fundraising collaboration with Michael Ball, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” summited in 2020.

“DJ Play a Christmas Song“ is Cher’s highest-charting single in the U.K. in over two decades, since “The Music’s No Good Without You” reached No. 8 in 2001. It’s the lead single from her 27th studio LP Christmas, which vaults 15-5 on the latest albums tally, for a new peak position and 11th career top 10 effort.

“DJ Play a Christmas Song” has been a record-setter on both sides of the Atlantic. When the single jingled to the top of the Dec. 2-dated Dance/Electronic Song Sales survey, she became the first solo artist to earn a new No. 1 on a Billboard songs chart; the only other act to have at least one new No. 1 on a Billboard songs chart in each of the seven decades from the 1960s through the 2020s is the Rolling Stones.

Canserbero’s Former Manager Confesses to Double Murder

Eight years after the deaths of rapper Canserbero and his producer Carlos Molnar, previously ruled as a murder-suicide, Venezuela’s attorney general, Tarek William Saab, released a new update on Tuesday (Dec. 26) after reopening the case last month.

According to Saab, the Public Prosecutor’s Office has clarified the case, and released the confession of those now presumed responsible of murdering the two: Canserbero’s manager and Molnar’s partner, María Natalia Améstica, and her brother, Guillermo Améstica.

In three videos shared by the prosecutor on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Améstica confesses that, in the midst of a work-related fit of rage, she served Canserbero (real name Tirone José González Orama) and Molnar tea mixed with a sedative on the night of Jan. 19, 2015 in her apartment in the city of Maracay, and later stabbed them to death. She also states how, with the help of her brother and the complicity of officials, the scene was altered to make it appear that Canserbero murdered Molnar and then committed suicide.

“It is 1:30 in the morning on December 19, 2023. I am making this video to publicly confess my responsibility for the double homicide of Carlos Molnar and Tirone González ‘Canserbero,’” begins the first 4:40 minute clip. Also, María Natalia claims that the problems began a month before the tragedy, when she found out that she would not be reimbursed for the tickets she had bought for a tour of the artist nor would she be paid for her marketing work for the tour, and that Canserbero didn’t want her as his manager. “That hurt me a lot,” María Natalia declares. “I was left with a lot of internal suffering because of the disdain.”

In a second video, her brother Guillermo Améstica corroborates the information by telling his version of events.

According to information published on Tuesday on the official website of the Venezuelan Public Prosecutor’s Office, Saab declared that “110 investigative steps were taken and 13 trips were made to Maracay to gather the new evidence that allowed the case to be clarified.”

“She poured into the tea she gave them a total of 10 milligrams [of Alpram] previously made into powder to dilute in that tea, resulting in both of them falling asleep within minutes of ingesting that beverage,” the official said.

According to the statements of the Améstica siblings, published by the ministry, María Natalia first assaulted Molnar in the kitchen with three stab wounds, and then went to the sofa in the living room, where Canserbero had fallen asleep, to stab him twice on the side. She called her brother to ask for help, and he “arrived at the property in the company of three officers of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) who advised him on the alteration of the scene in exchange for $1,000 each.”

To make it look like a murder-suicide, “Guillermo stabbed Molnar and gave Canserbero’s body a blow with a pipe that disfigured his face, with the purpose of simulating a fight between them.” Then, they threw Canserbero’s corpse out of the window, Guillermo left the scene and Maria Natalia called the neighbors, according to Venezuelan authorities.

According to the Améstica brothers, the commission of the Scientific, Criminal and Criminalistic Investigations Corps (CICPC) noticed that the scene had been altered upon arrival and arranged the last details in exchange for $10,000. The authorities initially claimed that the rapper stabbed his friend to death before taking his own life.

The resolution of the case comes just over a month after the Venezuelan prosecutor’s office announced it would reopen the case following persistent appeals from the late rapper’s family and friends.

Canserbero died at the age of 26 as a leading figure not only in Venezuela but in the world of rap in Spanish. Known for dark lyrics reflecting the violence in his country and real life experiences, he collaborated with artists such as Mala Rodríguez and Apache and released two solo studio albums, Vida and Muerte.

In August, Billboard Latin and Billboard Español named him one of the most essential Spanish-language rappers of all time.

“Ella vertió en el té que les dio un total de 10 miligramos [de Alpram] previamente convertidos en polvo para diluir en dicho té, teniendo como resultado que ambos quedaron dormidos a los minutos de ingerir esa bebida”, dijo el funcionario.

Según las declaraciones de los hermanos Améstica reproducidas por el ministerio, María Natalia agredió primero a Molnar en la cocina con tres puñaladas, y luego fue al sofá de la sala, donde Canserbero se había quedado dormido, para apuñalarlo dos veces en el costado. Llamó a su hermano a pedirle ayuda, y éste “llegó al inmueble en compañía de tres funcionarios del Servicio Bolivariano de Inteligencia Nacional (Sebin) quienes lo asesoraron en la alteración del lugar del suceso a cambio de 1.000 dólares estadounidenses para cada uno”.

Para hacer que pareciera un homicidio-suicidio, “Guillermo apuñaló a Molnar y le dio al cuerpo de Canserbero un golpe con un tubo que le desfiguró el rostro, con la finalidad de simular una riña entre ellos”. Mariah Carey’s Ex-Boyfriend Bryan Tanaka Breaks Silence About Couple’s Split After 7 Years

Bryan Tanaka is speaking out about his breakup with Mariah Carey.

On Tuesday (Dec. 26), the backup dancer, 40, shared a lengthy statement on social media about the couple’s split, which he says was a “mutual” decision between them.

“Dear friends and fans, with mixed emotion, I share this personal update regarding my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven extraordinary years together,” Tanaka begins the message on Instagram. “Our decision to embark on different paths is mutual, and as we navigate these separate journeys, we do so with profound respect and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the invaluable time we’ve shared. The memories we’ve created and the artistic collaborations are etched in my heart forever.”

Carey, 54, and Tanaka began working together in 2006 when he appeared as a member of the iconic singer-songwriter’s Adventures of Mimi tour. She confirmed the relationship in an Associated Press interview in February 2017, after she called him her “boyfriend.” Their affair also played out on Carey’s E! reality series Mariah’s World. They started dating in the wake of Carey’s split with her ex-fiancé, Australian businessman James Packer.

Speculation about the couple’s split began after Tanaka had been absent from the “All I Want For Christmas Is You” singer’s Merry Christmas One and All! tour in mid-November, People reports. The publication also noted that he wasn’t celebrating the holidays with Carey, as he usually does, in Aspen, Colo.

Carey had not shared a statement of her own as of press time.

“Mariah’s dedication to her family and her commitment to her craft have inspired us during out journey,” Tanaka continued in his statement. “I want to express my love and appreciation for Mariah and her incredible children, whose warmth and kindness have enriched my life in ways words cannot capture.”

Carey shares 12-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with her ex-husband Nick Cannon.

Tanaka added, “During this sensitive time, I kindly ask for your understanding, privacy and respect. The outpouring of love and support from fans has been a beacon of strength, and I am extremely grateful for the encouragement that continues to uplift me. I eagerly anticipate continuing my journey, knowing my passion for inspiration, dance and the creative arts will resonate in the unfolding chapters.”

BLACKPINK’s Lisa Shares Britney Spears Cover ‘My Only Wish’ on Christmas Eve: Watch

Lisa gifted BLINKS a holiday classic on Christmas Eve.

On Sunday (Dec. 24), the BLACKPINK superstar shared a cover of Britney Spears‘ 2000 classic “My Only Wish (This Year).”

“Christmas present for my BLINKS Have a wonderful holiday,” Lisa wrote on Instagram alongside a black-and-white image of herself with the song’s title.

In the music video for the song, the rapper and dancer receives a small ribbon-wrapped note and single rose before hopefully wandering the streets of Paris in a white fur-lined coat. The clip ends with Lisa flashing a huge smile as she accepts another rose from a mystery suitor as the evening concludes.

Spears’ “My Only Wish (This Year),” originally released on the 2000 compilation, Platinum Christmas, peaked at No. 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 2015. The holiday banger — about having Santa deliver a lover for the holiday — also ranked No. 95 on Billboard‘s 100 Best Christmas Songs of All Time staff list.

In November, Lisa’s track “Money” became the first K-pop track by a solo artist to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify. The song, released as the second track from her 2021 solo EP, Lalisa, marks her fourth solo achievement with Guinness World Records.

On Tuesday (Dec. 26), Lisa will take part in BLACKPINK: A VR Encore, an immersive virtual reality experience stemming from the special finale concert of the Born Pink World Tour.

“I think the fans will enjoy the playful aspects of the VR concert,” Lisa told Billboard ahead of the concert. “It’s like a new, fun experience for them. I hope they can feel the warmth and energy of our performances, even in this new format.”

The 70-minute concert will feature BLACKPINK performing Billboard Hot 100 hits such as “Shut Down,” “Pink Venom” and “How You Like That” like never before. Utilizing Meta Quest 3 headsets, the show takes place in Meta Horizon Worlds’ new Music Valley venue.

Meghan Trainor, Cher & Chloe Bring New Holiday Cheer to the Hot 100

As nine festive favorites rank in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 (dated Dec. 30) – tying for the most in a single week – three new holiday recordings debut on the chart.

Meghan Trainor’s version of “Jingle Bells” dashes in at No. 81, marking just the second version of the standard ever on the Hot 100 – with the other, by Frank Sinatra, hitting a new high at No. 16.

Plus, Cher returns to the Hot 100 after 21 years, with “DJ Play a Christmas Song” at No. 94, and Chlöe’s interpretation of “Winter Wonderland” makes the song a Hot 100 hit for the first time, gliding in at No. 96.

Meanwhile, as previously reported, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” crowns the Hot 100 for a second consecutive week as it logs a 14th total week at No. 1, dating to its first coronation in December 2019. Kanye West Apologizes to Jewish Community Ahead of ‘Vultures’ Album Release

Kanye West has issued an apology to the Jewish community for his antisemitic remarks ahead of his Vultures album release.

The 46-year-old rapper, who now goes by Ye, took to social media early Tuesday morning (Dec. 26) to share his regrets over comments in a statement written in Hebrew.

“I sincerely apologize to the Jewish community for any unintended outburst caused by my words or actions,” Ye wrote on Instagram. “It was not my intention to offend or demean, and I deeply regret any pain I may have caused. I am committed to starting with myself and learning from this experience to ensure greater sensitivity and understanding in the future. Your forgiveness is important to me, and I am committed to making amends and promoting unity.”

In 2022, Ye faced major backlash after making a series of antisemitic statements. After receiving blowback for wearing a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt in October 2022 at Paris Fashion Week, the rapper tweeted that he was going to go “death con 3” on Jewish people. This began a string of hate-speech-filled interviews, which reached an even more disturbing level when he appeared on Alex Jones’ InfoWars and said, “I see good things about Hitler,” among other hateful rhetoric.

Earlier this month, during a listening party in Miami for his oft-delayed collaborative album, Vultures, with Ty Dolla $ign, Ye appeared onstage wearing what appeared to be a black Ku Klux Klan-style hood to perform the project’s title track.

“I ain’t antisemitic/ I just f—ed a Jewish b—-,” he rapped during the song, adding to his controversial antisemitic statements from the prior year.

The release date for Vultures has been delayed several times in recent weeks. The album is now expected to arrive on Jan. 12, Ye’s reps told Billboard in late December. It was previously scheduled for release on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31).

Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ Adds Record 17th Week at No. 1 on Billboard Global 200 Chart

Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” strings up a record-extending 17th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart (dated Dec. 30).

The modern seasonal standard also tops the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for a 12th frame.

Plus, Dean Martin’s “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!” hits the top 10 of both the Global 200 (11-7) and Global Excl. U.S. (13-10) for the first time; José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” returns to the Global 200’s top 10 (12-10); and Kelly Clarkson’s “Underneath the Tree” makes its first appearance in the Global Excl. U.S. top 10 (11-9), as it rises 10-6 on the Global 200.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, which began in September 2020, rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The song, originally released in 1994, spends a record-extending 17th week at No. 1, following four frames in both the 2020 and 2021 holiday seasons and five frames over last year’s holidays.

Wham!’s “Last Christmas” holds at its No. 2 high on the Global 200; Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” keeps at No. 3, after reaching No. 2 last holiday season; Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” repeats at its No. 4 best; and Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” returns to its No. 5 peak, from No. 6.

Dean Martin’s “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!” reaches the Global 200’s top 10 for the first time, rising 11-7 amid a flurry of activity in worldwide streams (51 million, up 19%) and sales (2,000, up 2%). The song, from 1959, is the late crooner’s first top 10 on the chart.

Plus, José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” revisits the Global 200’s top 10 (12-10), with 48.8 million streams (up 18%) and 4,000 sold (up 20%) worldwide. The 1970 classic hit a No. 5 high last holiday season.

U.S. high; Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” dances merrily back to its No. 3 best, from No. 4; Sia’s “Snowman” rises to a new No. 4 high, from No. 5; and Michael Bublé’s “It’s Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas” climbs 6-5, after reaching No. 4 last holiday season.

Kelly Clarkson’s “Underneath the Tree” makes its first trip to the Global Excl. U.S. top 10 (11-9), as it advances 10-6 on the Global 200. The song, from 2013, drew 28.9 million streams (up 16%) and sold 1,000 (up 12%) outside the U.S. in the tracking week. It becomes Clarkson’s first top 10 since the Global Excl. U.S. chart began.

Additionally, Dean Martin’s “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!” hits the Global Excl. U.S. top 10 for the first time, pushing 13-10 with 28.2 million streams (up 19%) outside the U.S., marking his first top 10 on the ranking.

Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ Scores 14th Week at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100

Mariah Carey‘s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” tops the Billboard Hot 100 for a second consecutive week – as it logs a 14th total week at No. 1, dating to its first coronation in December 2019.

Notably, the modern Yuletide standard is Carey’s third Hot 100 leader of at least 14 weeks – as she becomes the first artist in the chart’s history with three such No. 1s. She previously reigned for 16 weeks with “One Sweet Day,” with Boyz II Men, in 1995-96 and for 14 weeks with “We Belong Together” in 2005.

“Christmas” has ruled the Hot 100 over five holiday seasons. It was originally released on Carey’s album Merry Christmas in November 1994 and, as streaming has grown and holiday music has become more prominent on streaming services’ playlists, it hit the top 10 for the first time in December 2017 and has now led during the holidays in 2019 (for three weeks), 2020 (two), 2021 (three), 2022 (four) and 2023 (two to date).

Elsewhere, José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” returns to the Hot 100’s top 10, dashing from No. 12 to No. 9.

In all, nine seasonal songs infuse the Hot 100’s top 10 – tying for the most in a single week; nine holiday hits first decorated the tier on the chart dated Jan. 2, 2021.

The Hot 100 blends all-genre U.S. streaming (official audio and official video), radio airplay and sales data, the lattermost metric reflecting purchases of physical singles and digital tracks from full-service digital music retailers; digital singles sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites are excluded from chart calculations. Streams, airplay & sales: Carey’s “Christmas,” on Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings, drew 48.4 million streams (up 15%) and 31.7 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 21%) and sold 7,000 downloads (down 7%) in the U.S. Dec. 15-21, according to Luminate.

The single holds at No. 2 on the Streaming Songs chart, following 18 weeks at No. 1; dips 3-4 on Digital Song Sales, following four frames at No. 1; and rises 22-17 on Radio Songs, where it hit a No. 11 high last season.

Carey’s record third Hot 100 No. 1 of 14 weeks or more: Carey is the first artist with three songs that have dominated the Hot 100 for 14 or more weeks each. She one-ups Boyz II Men, who have notched three leaders of 13 or more frames apiece, with Carey and the group having teamed for the 16-week No. 1 smash “One Sweet Day.”

Carey’s record 93rd week atop Hot 100: With “Christmas,” Carey adds her record-extending 93rd week at No. 1 on the Hot 100, dating to the chart’s Aug. 4, 1958, inception.

“Christmas” became Carey’s 19th Hot 100 No. 1, the most among soloists and one away from The Beatles’ overall record 20. It also made Carey the first artist to have ranked at No. 1 on the chart in four distinct decades, dating to her first week on top in August 1990 with her debut hit, “Vision of Love.”

Holiday hits atop the Hot 100: Now up to 14 weeks, Carey’s “Christmas” extends its mark as the holiday song with the most time tallied atop the Hot 100, among three such No. 1s. “The Chipmunk Song,” by The Chipmunks with David Seville, spent four weeks on top beginning in December 1958, followed by Brenda Lee’s two weeks on top to begin this holiday season with “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” also released in 1958.

No. 1 in record 64th week on Hot 100: Carey’s “Christmas” rules the Hot 100 in its 64th week on the chart. It passes Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves” for the latest, by total chart weeks, that a song has led the list. The latter completed a record 59-week trip to No. 1 in March 2022 and reigned for five consecutive weeks, through its 63rd frame; it went on to amass a record 91 weeks on the chart.

No. 1 on Holiday 100: Plus, Carey’s “Christmas” concurrently keeps atop the multi-metric Holiday 100 chart, which uses the same methodology as the Hot 100. It leads for a 60th week, of the chart’s 67 total weeks since the list originated in 2011. It also rules as the top title on the Greatest of All Time Holiday 100 Songs recap.

At No. 2 on the Hot 100, Lee’s “Rockin’ ” adds a fifth week atop Streaming Songs (49.4 million streams, up 17%, good for top Streaming Gainer honors on the Hot 100).

The rest of the all-holiday top five on the Hot 100 holds in place: Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock,” released in 1957, at its No. 3 high; Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” from 1984, at its No. 4 best; and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” from 1964, at No. 5, after reaching No. 4.

Jack Harlow’s “Lovin On Me” keeps at No. 6 on the Hot 100, four weeks after it became his third No. 1. The chart’s top nonholiday title wins the list’s top Airplay Gainer award (50.2 million, up 16%) and claims a sixth week each atop the multi-metric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts.

Andy Williams’ “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” from 1963, repeats at No. 7 on the Hot 100, having hit No. 5. The late singer now sports a record span of 64 years, two months and three weeks from his first week in the top 10 with “Lonely Street” in October 1959 through his latest week in the bracket.

Dean Martin’s “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!,” from 1959, rises 10-8 on the Hot 100, returning to its best first reached in the 2020 holiday season.

José Feliciano’s “Feliz Navidad” returns to the Hot 100’s top 10, jingling 12-9 with 24.9 million streams (up 19%), 23.8 million in airplay audience (up 5%) and 2,000 sold (up 12%). The 1970 classic hit a No. 6 high over the 2020 holiday season.

The beloved entertainer, 78, was honored with the first Billboard Legend Award at the 2022 Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Putting a bow on the Hot 100’s top 10, The Ronettes’ “Sleigh Ride” backtracks to No. 10 from its No. 8 high. The act now boasts a span of 60 years, three months and one week in the top 10, dating to its iconic No. 2-peaking “Be My Baby” in September 1963 – the longest among groups. (Excluding holiday fare, The Beatles broke the record for the longest top 10 span among all acts last month: 59 years, nine months and three weeks, from “I Want To Hold Your Hand” in 1964 to the debut of their newly-released single “Now and Then.”)
