Glynis Johns, ‘Mary Poppins’ Star Who First Sang Sondheim’s ‘Send in the Clowns,’ Dies at 100

Glynis Johns, a Tony Award-winning stage and screen star who played the mother opposite Julie Andrews in the classic movie “Mary Poppins” and introduced the world to the bittersweet standard-to-be “Send in the Clowns” by Stephen Sondheim, has died. She was 100.

Mitch Clem, her manager, said she died Thursday at an assisted living home in Los Angeles of natural causes. “Today’s a sad day for Hollywood,” Clem said. “She is the last of the last of old Hollywood.”

Johns was known to be a perfectionist about her profession — precise, analytical and opinionated. The roles she took had to be multi-faceted. Anything less was giving less than her all.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m not interested in playing the role on only one level,” she told The Associated Press in 1990. “The whole point of first-class acting is to make a reality of it. To be real. And I have to make sense of it in my own mind in order to be real.”

Johns’ greatest triumph was playing Desiree Armfeldt in “A Little Night Music,” for which she won a Tony in 1973. Sondheim wrote the show’s hit song “Send in the Clowns” to suit her distinctive husky voice, but she lost the part in the 1977 film version to Elizabeth Taylor.

“I’ve had other songs written for me, but nothing like that,” Johns told the AP in 1990. “It’s the greatest gift I’ve ever been given in the theater.”

Others who followed Johns in singing Sondheim’s most popular song include Frank Sinatra, Judy Collins, Barbra Streisand, Sarah Vaughan and Olivia Newton-John. It also appeared in season two of “Yellowjackets” in 2023, sung by Elijah Wood.

Back when it was being conceived, “A Little Night Music” had gone into rehearsal with some of the book and score unfinished, including a solo song for Johns. Director Hal Prince suggested she and co-star Len Cariou improvise a scene or two to give book writer Hugh Wheeler some ideas.

“Hal said ‘Why don’t you just say what you feel,”’ she recalled to the AP. “When Len and I did that, Hal got on the phone to Steve Sondheim and said, ‘I think you’d better get in a cab and get round here and watch what they’re doing because you are going to get the idea for Glynis’ solo.”’

Johns was the fourth generation of an English theatrical family. Her father, Mervyn Johns, had a long career as a character actor and her mother was a pianist. She was born in Pretoria, South Africa, because her parents were visiting the area on tour at the time of her birth.

Johns was a dancer at 12 and an actor at 14 in London’s West End. Her breakthrough role was as the amorous mermaid in the title of the 1948 hit comedy “Miranda.”

“I was quite an athlete, my muscles were strong from dancing, so the tail was just fine; I swam like a porpoise,” she told Newsday in 1998. In 1960’s “The Sundowners,” with Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum, she was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar. (She lost out to Shirley Jones in “Elmer Gantry.”)

Other highlights include playing the mother in “Mary Poppins,” the movie that introduced Julie Andrews and where she sang the rousing tune “Sister Suffragette.” She also starred in the 1989 Broadway revival of “The Circle,” W. Somerset Maugham’s romantic comedy about love, marriage and fidelity, opposite Rex Harrison and Stewart Granger.

“I’ve retired many times. My personal life has come before my work. The theater is just part of my life. It probably uses my highest sense of intelligence, so therefore I have to come back to it, to realize that I’ve got the talent. I’m not as good doing anything else,” she told the AP.

To prepare for “A Coffin in Egypt,” Horton Foote’s 1998 play about a grand dame reminiscing about her life on and off a ranch on the Texas prairie, she asked the Texas-born Foote to record a short tape of himself reading some lines and used it as her coach.

In a 1991 revival of “A Little Night Music” in Los Angeles, she played Madame Armfeldt, the mother of Desiree, the part she had created. In 1963, she starred in her own TV sitcom “Glynis.”

Johns lived all around the world and had four husbands. The first was the father of her only child, the late Gareth Forwood, an actor who died in 2007.

Powered by guitars and trumpets, the corrido — which Peso announced as his final release of 2023 — was released Dec. 28 under the labels Double P Records and Rancho Humilde. Written by Alexis Fierro and produced by Fierro and Peso, Junior H and Maydon, it speaks of nights out and women. And the word “Dompe,” which is repeated throughout the song, refers to the champagne brand Dom Pérignon — which Peso and Junior H had previously referenced in their hit song “Lady Gaga” with Gabito Ballesteros.

Below are the full lyrics of the song:

Break the Dompe
The stash of money never ends
Farandulitas danced
And I don’t know your name
But your scent captures me
You’re just missing your wings, angel

Break the Dompe
Maria is almost here
Bring all your friends with you
Only at night
I don’t look at her in the daytime
And this high never ends

Don’t tempt me
You are a snake
Get out of my mind, go away
With your teeth
Lined with diamonds
I swore to love you always

180 for the offer
Singing and very crazy
Red eyes
And I caress your leg
I feel I’m in the stars

Five cigars
Let the car fill with smoke
If there’s trouble, we’ll put it out, hey
Everything under control
I’ve got friends from the bad guys
Also the uniformed ones, hey

Break the Dompe
Maria is almost here
Bring all your friends with you
Only at night
I don’t look at her in the daytime
And this high never ends

Don’t tempt me
You are a snake
Get out of my mind, go away
With your teeth
Lined with diamonds
I swore to love you always

Club
Babies want smoke
They want to party till sunrise
Red eyes
And I caress your leg
I feel I’m in the stars

Jelly Roll Meets Terminally Ill Fan, Grants Her ‘Dying Wish’

Jelly Roll has once again stolen our hearts with his acts of kindness.

The “Need a Favor” superstar granted one of his biggest fan’s wishes in Tennessee recently, meeting up with a grandmother named Sharon, who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness. “She had an aneurysm which caused early on-set dementia,” her daughter Melissa told local station News Channel 5. “She also has renal failure, and she has chosen not to do dialysis. It’s a lot. It’s a lot for her.”

Sharon is a mega fan of Jelly Roll, having convinced Melissa and granddaughter Naveah to get matching bad apple tattoos with her in honor of the country star. Melissa has also driven her mother to the church Jelly Roll grew up attending, a location that is now featured on his 2023 Whitsitt Chapel album cover.

While at one of Jelly Roll’s toy drive, Melissa told a crew member about her mother. “I explained her situation and said her dying wish, her number one on her bucket list, was to meet Jelly Roll,” she said.

Ultimately, Sharon’s wish was granted, and the grandmother ended up meeting Jelly Roll backstage at one of his shows. “He made me feel like I was so special. He told me I only looked 50,” Sharon said. See the sweet photos here.

It’s been a big year for Jelly Roll’s skyrocketing career, as he notched two No. 1 Country Airplay hits, with “Son of a Sinner” and “Need a Favor.” He was also Billboard‘s cover star for its 2023 Country Power Players issue, and subsequently performed and spoke during Billboard‘s inaugural Billboard Country Live in Concert event in Nashville earlier this year. The star is nominated for two Grammy Awards for the upcoming 2024 ceremony, including best new artist and best country duo/group performance for the remix of “Save Me” with Lainey Wilson.

Travis Barker & Daughter Alabama Get ‘Tatted Together’

Travis Barker and Alabama Barker had the ultimate father-daughter hangout on Wednesday night (Jan. 3), as the duo got inked up together.

The rocker’s 18-year-old daughter took to her Instagram Stories to share a photo of her dad getting his tattoo done. while she sat and waited for her turn. “Tatted together,” Alabama captioned the post. She followed up with her finished product, the Stevie Wonder-inspired lyrics, “Isn’t She Lovely.”

“Fun fact: I was rocked as a baby to that song almost everyday,” she wrote, indicating the inspiration behind the new ink, tagging the tattoo artist Arbel. See her Stories before they disappear here. Travis also showed off his ink, done by Chuey Quintanar, which feature a touch-up of his “Self Made” knuckle tattoo. “Just started touching up my knuckles 15yrs after my accident,” the Blink-182 drummer wrote, in reference to the 2008 deadly plane crash he survived. See Travis’ fresh ink here.

In other Alabama news, the star has been following in her father’s footsteps and teasing new music, taking to TikTok back in May to share a snippet of a song she’s working on. While the track doesn’t currently have an official title or release plans, the track marks Alabama’s foray into the music world. Travis shares Alabama and son Landon — as well as stepdaughter Atiana de la Hoya — with ex-wife Shanna Moakler, and just welcomed a new son, Rocky Thirteen, with wife Kourtney Kardashian, on Nov. 1.

Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” Soars on Streaming Thanks to Anyone But You

During the holidays (Dec. 22), Anyone But You – which stars Emmy nominee Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell – delighted rom-com fans across movie theatres. In the Shakespeare-inspired story, Natasha Bedingfield’s pop classic “Unwritten” plays a pivotal role in the narrative of Powell’s character. The song plays and is sung by multiple characters throughout the film, easily making it the defining musical characteristic of the Will Gluck-helmed movie.

According to Luminate, “Unwritten” earned over 1.3 million official on-demand streams during the period of Dec. 29-Jan. 1, marking an eye-popping 156.3% increase from just over 511,000 streams the weekend prior (Dec. 22-25). Since the film hit theatres, TikTok has seen a wave of videos using the official “Unwritten” sound to soundtrack viewers leaving Anyone But You screenings in high spirits. That sound boasts over 39,400 posts on TikTok. Bedingfield has since posted a pair of TikToks celebrating the song’s resurgence. “A rom com has got girls falling out of cinemas singing my song — and now it’s trending!!!” she wrote in an intro to a compilation of post-Anyone But You “Unwritten” TikToks. — KYLE DENIS

A Singing Outlet Electrifies Doe Boy’s “Way Too Long”

It was certainly one of the more attention-capturing new commercials you might’ve seen in a week of sports and holiday TV coverage at the end of 2023: an Apple ad for the iPhone 15 Plus starring a heartbroken electrical outlet. In the spot, the outlet painedly croons to the new iPhone about why it’s being so distant: ““We had pure energy/ We had that chemistry/ We were inseparable… I feel like it’s been way too long and I’m missing you.” Though it’s mostly just meant to trumpet the long battery life of the 15 Plus, the commercial tugged enough heartstrings this emotional holiday season to lead listeners to the real song behind it.

“Way Too Long,” released earlier in December by Cleveland rapper Doe Boy, is the song featured in the commercial, and the track has seen a boom in streams following the commercial’s Christmas Eve debut. For the first four days of this current tracking week (Dec. 29 – Jan. 1), the track pulled in over 98,000 official on-demand U.S. streams – up 115% from the under 46,000 it posted over an equivalent period (Dec. 22 – 25) the week before, according to Luminate – while also landing in the top 10 of Shazam’s U.S. top 200, as folks were gratified too learn “Way Too Long” was a real song, not just an inspired invention of Apple’s marketing team. (“Dem damn Electrical Sockets cooked!” reads one characteristic comment on the song’s official YouTube.)  – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

4Batz Rides Ironic Music Video to Massive Streaming Gains

With SZA, Victoria Monét and Coco Jones leading the charge, R&B had a banner year in 2023. This year seeks to be a continuation of that momentum, but this time with a rising star named 4batz at the forefront. His “Act II: Date @ 8,” has exploded at streaming, pulling in over 2.4 million official on-demand streams during the period of Dec. 22-28, according to Luminate. That’s a whopping 385% increase in streaming activity from just under 500,000 streams the week prior (Dec. 15-21).

The massive streaming growth of “Act II” is mostly due to its viral From The Block live performance music video. In the clip, which finds him surrounded by a crew decked out in ski masks and hoodies, 4 Batz plays on the TikTok generation’s penchant for visual and sonic irony. While he’s singing a Brent Faiyaz-adjacent R&B track, the video’s aesthetic lends itself more towards drill rappers than R&B crooners. That juxtaposition helped make the video a viral sensation on social media, even drawing a reaction from record-breaking Twitch streamer Kai Cenat. Several excerpts from his reaction have earned over 50,000 likes on TikTok alone, and the excerpt he posted to his own YouTube Shorts page received 49,000 views in just 22 hours. The song’s official visualizer has garnered 700,000 views in two weeks, while the official TikTok sound boasts over 13,500 posts.

“Act II: Date @ 8” has already hit No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 and No. 2 on the platform’s Viral 50 – USA ranking. It’s only up from here as 4Batz’s career and profile continue to grow. — KD

Zeddy Will Scores Another TikTok-Feuled Streaming Smash With On the Radar “Cha Cha” Freestyle

Last year, Billboard covered Zeddy Will’s last TikTok-fueled streaming hit, “Freak You.” Now, just three days into the new year, the social media personality and rapper has another smash on his hands. According to Luminate, “Cha Cha” has collected over 1.24 million official on-demand streams during the period of Dec. 22-28. That’s a humongous 257.4% increase from just under 350,000 streams two weeks prior (Dec. 8-14).

“Cha Cha” — a remix of the iconic “Cha Cha Slide” — is one-half of Zeddy’s On The Radar Freestyle, which hit YouTube on Dec. 1, 2023. The clip has since earned over one million views, with a standalone “Cha Cha” clip earning an additional 151,000 views. Beyond the initial live performance video, “Cha Cha” sources its virality from a viral TikTok dance courtesy of TikTok creator @jerseyyjoe; his initial dance clip has earned nearly 24 million TikTok views. The hip-rocking, slipper-smacking dance quickly gained steam on the app from major creators and everyday users alike, resulting in over 84,400 posts to On The Radar Radio’s “Cha Cha” sound

With Zeddy Will always being one step ahead of the social media curve – he’s already teamed up for collaborative TikToks with @jerseyyjoe – there’s no telling just how much “Cha Cha” will continue to rise. — KD

Season’s Gainings: New Year, Same Taylor

For hundreds of thousands of music listeners, 2024 appears to be starting off about the same way all of 2023 went: listening to Taylor Swift. There seemed to be a Swift song for just about every occasion in ‘23, and for Jan. 1 of 2024, there was a particularly obvious pick: Reputation closer and fan favorite “New Year’s Day,” which saw a 333% gain (from the prior Dec. 30) to 361,000 official on-demand U.S. streams on the first day of last year as well. But following Swift’s historic 2023, the total bump was even bigger: “Day” skyrocketed 327% to 738,000 streams over the same two-day period this year, even cracking the top 40 of Spotify’s Daily Top Songs USA chart on Jan. 1. Within a few years, there might not be a day on the calendar you won’t be able to pencil in some automatic Swift megabump for. — AU

Banda Los Recoditos’ ‘Vas A Querer Volver’ Hits No. 1 on Regional Mexican Airplay

Banda Los Recoditos add an eighth No. 1 to their ledger as “Vas A Querer Volver” jumps 2-1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart dated Jan. 6.

“It’s great news to start off the year this way,” Rafael Gónzalez and Santos de Jesús Pérez “JeyPi”, lead singers of Banda Los Recoditos tells Billboard. “Being No. 1 on a Billboard chart makes us happy and creates a stronger commitment to work on new music for our fans.”

“Vas a Querer Volver,” which entered the top 10 in its eighth chart week, at No. 8, ascends from the runner-up slot with a 3% increase in audience impressions, to 6.9 million, earned in the U.S. during the Dec. 22-28 tracking week, according to Luminate. The song ejects Grupo Frontera and Junior H’s “En Altavoz” from the lead and sends it to No. 9 with a 33% decrease, to 4.9 million impressions.

As “Volver” takes the lead on Regional Mexican Airplay, UMLE claims the chart’s top four titles – a feat the company has achieved many times over the past decade. On the chart dated Jan. 6, UMLE has “Volver” at No. 1 (released via El Recodo/Fonovisa/UMLE), Julión Álvarez y Su Norteño Banda’s “Buscándole a La Suerte” at No. 2 (released via Fonovisa/UMLE), La Fiera de Ojinaga’s “La Neta Que No” at No. 3 and La Maquinaria Norteña’s “Perro Amor” at No. 4, both via Azteca/Fonovisa/UMLE.

UMLE last claimed the top four in 2022, when it held the Nos. 1-4 slots for four straight weeks on the April 2-23-dated lists. UMLE is the only label to have monopolized the top four on the chart in the last 10 years.

With “Volver” Los Recoditos score their eighth champ, dating back to “Ando Bien Pedo,” their longest-charting ruler, with 12 weeks atop in 2010. Here’s a review of the groups’ collections of No. 1s on the radio chart:

Peak, Title, Weeks at No. 1
Feb. 13, 2010, “Ando Bien Pedo,” 12
Dec. 28, 2013, “Mi Último Deseo, one
Nov. 1, 2014, “Hasta Que Salga El Sol,” one
April 14, 2018, “Tiempo,” five
July 13, 2019, “Perfecta,” three
April 23, 2022, “Me Siento A Todo Dar,” one
Oct. 15, 2022, “Fuerte No Soy,” one
Jan. 6, “Vas A Querer Volver”

Elsewhere, “Volver” repeats Los Recoditos’ last two top 10 entries on the overall Latin Airplay chart, jumping 8-7; “Me Siento a Todo Dar” and “Fuerte No Soy” also reached No. 7 high in 2022.

“We will be closer this 2024, with dates in Mexico, U.S. and Central America, performing new music,” Gónzalez and JeyPi add. “Thanks to our listeners, platforms, media, and our loyal followers.”

Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco Make Snuggly Public Debut as Couple at Lakers Game

Just weeks after Selena Gomez confirmed that she’s been dating producer Benny Blanco for around six months, the celeb couple made their official public debut on Wednesday night (Jan. 3) at a Los Angeles Lakers game. The happy couple were spotted smiling and holding hands in their A-list courtside seats wearing adorably mismatched outfits, with the 31-year-old pop singer sporting silver boots, black pants and matching top under a black and white color-blocked trench coat and Blanco rocking white Crocs, cropped white pants and a pink-and-orange floral jacket.

Cameras caught the pair snuggling up during the contest between the Lakers and Miami heat at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena, with InStyle reporting that they piled on the PDA during the game, with Gomez laying her head on his shoulder as the couple held hands and intertwined their fingers, with Blanco, 35, planting a kiss on the back of Gomez’s hand at one point.

The outing came on the same day that Blanco posted an Instagram Story featuring a series of pictures of Gomez smiling with her hands in front of her face as they seemed to be out on a lunch date; Gomez reposted the pics and added a cute meme wishing for “one more kiss” from her partner.

Only Murders in the Building star Gomez first confirmed she and Blanco — who has worked with Sel’s ex, Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran and SZA, among others — were an item on Dec. 7, half a year after the pair are believed to have started dating, telling fans in on Instagram that the producer is “my absolute everything in my heart” and that she’s at her “happiest” in the relationship. She made the match Instagram official a short time later, posting pics of Blanco hugging her and another in which she leans back to kiss him.

Christina Aguilera Gets Cozy With Daughter Summer Rain in Sweet Photos

Christina Aguilera is spending some quality time with her little girl. The pop star shared pictures of herself and daughter Summer Rain on Instagram that look to be from the star’s residency at Voltaire Las Vegas.

“Me & Mine,” she captioned the carousel of photos on Wednesday (Jan. 3), which featured her in full glam, wearing a cream colored coat, flesh-toned sequin top and thigh-high boots; Summer wears a fuzzy black sweater and a black ’90s-inspired tattoo choker necklace. In the pictures, Aguilera and her daughter make kissy faces at the camera and share a side-arm hug in an elevator.

This isn’t the first time that Summer has been featured on the five-time Grammy winner’s Instagram. Back in August, Aguilera wished her daughter — whom she shares with fiancé Matthew Rutler — a happy birthday with a dedicated post on her feed that stated how happy she is to be her mother.

“Happy 9th birthday to our sweet Summer Rain,” she wrote on Aug. 16. “Today I find myself reflecting on how fast time has gone by. These 9 years have been filled with boundless love, heartwarming hugs, staying up too late, Disney adventures, and most recently, the joy of gracing the stage alongside you.”

“Every day, I thank the universe for gifting me the privilege of being your momma, a role that stands as my ultimate accomplishment,” the pop star continued. “Witnessing the remarkable young woman you are evolving into fills me with immense pride. Mommy loves you so much!”

Aguilera is also mom to son Max, whom she shares with ex-husband Jordan Bratman. She and Rutler have been engaged since 2014.

Destiny’s Child Reunited at Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour: See the Photo

Reunited and it feels so good! Since they debuted in 1997, Destiny’s Child has become one of the most successful, beloved and acclaimed girl groups in music history. The group formally disbanded in 2006 — although they’ve since reunited at Beyoncé‘s 2013 Super Bowl Halftime Show and 2018 Coachella headlining performance — but fans have been aching for a public reunion of all of the key original members. Thanks to a pic posted by OG group member LeToya Luckett on Wednesday (Jan. 3), fans finally got their wish.

“[All love.] This was hands down my favorite moment of 2023,” Luckett captioned the post. “[The love, the joy, the prayer, the healing.] May we all experience beautiful moments like this in 2024.” In the picture, Luckett, Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, and LaTavia Roberson pose backstage at Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour stop in Houston.

Beyoncé, Luckett and Roberson threw up H-Town hand signs to highlight their hometown of Houston, and Rowland and Williams opted for simple peace signs. While Beyoncé was dressed down in a simple black hoodie and sweats — she did just perform a nearly three-hour set, after all! — the four other Destiny’s Child members were decked out in glittery silvers and blacks to keep in line with the Renaissance dress code.

Fans got a brief glimpse at the moment behind the reunion picture in Beyoncé’s box office-topping Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé documentary concert film. While Beyoncé didn’t reveal exactly what the five ladies caught up on, her narration echoed the sentiments of healing that Luckett expressed in her caption. While the picture has delighted fans, it’s also sparked some rumors about more concrete reunion plans — but those remains just that, rumors.

Destiny’s Child has earned 10 top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including the No. 1 hits “Say My Name” (three weeks), “Independent Women, Part I” (11 weeks), “Bills, Bills, Bills” (one week) and “Bootylicious” (two weeks). On the Billboard 200, the Grammy-winning vocal group has scored four top 10 entries, including the chart-toppers Survivor (two weeks) and #1’s (one week).

6 Latin Collaborations We Want to See in 2024: Nicki Nicole & Peso Pluma, Shakira & BLACKPINK and More

Here are the collabs our Latin editors are hoping for this year.

Collaborations like Bizarrap and Shakira‘s “BZRP Music Sessions #53,” Eslabon Armado and Peso Pluma‘s “Ella Baila Sola” and Karol G and Shakira’s “TQG” ruled the Billboard charts in 2023, and some even made history along the way. Such was the case for “Ella Baila Sola,” the biggest Latin song of the year, which became the first ever regional Mexican track to enter the top five on the all-genre Hot 100 chart.

The aforementioned epic collabs, along with team ups by Grupo Frontera and Bad Bunny; Maluma and Carin Leon; Manuel Turizo and Marshmello; and Fuerza Regida and Shakira, marked a year of dream collabs we didn’t know we needed. As we’re ringing in the new year, Billboard Latin editors have put together a list of six pairings that, while have not been confirmed, we’d love to see happen in 2024.

Some have already collaborated — such as Nicki Nicole and Peso Pluma, who made their couple status official in November walking down the Latin Grammys red carpet together in Seville, Spain. While the pair released a remix to Peso’s “Por Las Noches” last year, we’re hoping that an EP is in the works. When asked by Billboard if they had any plans of releasing anything together in the future, Peso didn’t give too much away, simply allowing, “there are some surprises” — which opens the door to endless possibilities.

Another dream collab on our list is Becky G and Grupo Frontera, who could team up for a tejano-norteño tune. Both Becky and Frontera have worked closely with hitmaker Edgar Barrera, so we know that there’s a connection already there.

From Shakira and BLACKPINK to Karol G and Feid, below are our editors’ picks for dream collaborations in 2024 (in no particular order):
