Xavi Announces First U.S. Tour: See the Dates

Breakout star Xavi is hitting the road with the 2024 Poco A Poco Tour, his first trek in the U.S.

The 19-year-old Mexican-American singer/songwriter is set to kick off the 24-date stint on March 28, starting with two stops in Mexico. On April 2, he begins his American stint in Los Angeles at the Roxy Theatre, making stops in Seattle, Portland, Phoenix and Las Vegas and wrapping up in San Antonio on May 12. The “La Diabla” singer is also slated to perform at Sueños Music Festival in Chicago on May 25.

The tour announcement comes on the heels of Xavi’s rapid rise in the music industry thanks to his signature tumbados románticos. Xavi signed with Interscope Records in 2021, and in 2023, he released a summer EP titled My Mom’s Playlist — a tribute to his mother that features covers of Latin pop and rock en Español classics she loved — reflects his deep-rooted family values.

At the end of December, Xavi debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 with not one, but two entries: “La Diabla” and “La Víctima,” which have since peaked at No. 22 and No. 55, respectively. His global appeal is further evidenced by his presence on the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts, with “La Diabla” reaching the top five on both.

He’s also spent eight weeks atop Billboard’s Latin Songwriters thanks to songs like “La Diabla” and previously released singles including “La Víctima,” “Poco a Poco” with Dareyes De La Sierra and “Modo DND” with Tony Aguirre.

Earlier this year, Xavi signed with WME for global representation in all areas.

Pre-sale tickets go live Wednesday (Feb. 7) via Seated.com. Public on-sale for tickets will be available on Friday (Feb. 9) through Xavi’s official website.

2024 Grammy Awards Reaches Its Largest Audience Since 2020

The 2024 Grammy Awards were a hit with reviewers and also with audiences. Viewership was up 34% from last year, averaging 16.9 million viewers, the show’s largest audience since 2020.

Live +3-day viewership will lift the audience past 17 million viewers.

The Grammy Awards remains the No. 1 music awards show for the 18th consecutive year.

On Paramount+, Grammy Awards live viewership was its highest ever, up +173% from last year.

The show peaked in the 9:45 p.m. quarter-hour with 18.25 million viewers during the In Memoriam segment, which featured performances by Fantasia Barrino (honoring Tina Turner), Stevie Wonder (feting Tony Bennett), Annie Lennox (Sinéad O’Connor) and Jon Batiste (Clarence Avant).

The 2024 Grammy Awards dominated social media with 62.6 billion potential impressions, ranking as the No. 1 social entertainment event of 2024. (Potential impressions are the estimated number of people who might have viewed posts related to this topic. NetBase calculates potential impressions based on followers/fans of original posts and followers/fans of engagements.)

#Grammys trended in the top 10 in the U.S. for 12 hours and peaked at No. 1. Nearly all of the top trending topics last night were related to the Grammys.

As of this morning there were 56.4 million social video clips consumed of Grammys content.

Broadcast and streaming information is according to Nielsen time zone-adjusted fast national and Out of Home ratings for Sunday, Feb. 5 and internal data.

The show was held at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, where it has been held for 21 of the past 25 years. Trevor Noah hosted for the fourth consecutive year.  As always, the telecast had something for everybody. Performers ranged from 20-year-old superstar Olivia Rodrigo to music legend Joni Mitchell, who is still adding to her considerable legacy at 80.

The 66th annual Grammy Awards were produced by Fulwell 73 Productions for the Recording Academy for the fourth consecutive year. Ben Winston, Raj Kapoor and Jesse Collins served as executive producers. Hamish Hamilton directed the show and was one of six producers.

Kapoor and Hamilton won’t have much time to bask in the glory of the Grammys’ solid reviews and ratings. Kapoor is also set to executive produce the Oscars (along with Katy Mullan) on March 10. He will additionally serve as showrunner. Hamilton is set to direct. It will be Kapoor and Mullan’s first time executive producing and Hamilton’s fourth time directing the Oscars.

Billie Eilish, who performed “What Was I Made For?” on the Grammys, is expected to perform that nominated song on the Oscars as well.

Watch Miley Cyrus Remind Flavor Flav That He Used to Mix Her Up With Gwen Stefani

Miley Cyrus picked up her first pair of Grammy Awards on Sunday, but perhaps a backstage moment was her favorite of the night when Flavor Flav finally got her name right.

Footage captured Cyrus walking backstage at Crypto.com Arena as the Public Enemy rapper continuously shouted, “Miley!”

Flav got the “Flowers” singer’s attention and she was ecstatic that she was being called by her name rather than Gwen Stefani’s, whom Flav typically mixed her up with.

“You know it’s me?! I made it,” Cyrus replied in shock. “You don’t think I’m Gwen Stefani anymore? You used to call me ‘Gwen’ every time I saw you!”

“I know,” he admitted as the two went on to snap a few photos together. Miley added: “You know what time it is!”

Flavor Flav had some fun with the heartfelt exchange when jokingly referring to Cyrus as the “Hollaback Girl” artist on X.

“My girl Gwen Stefani,,, I mean MILEY CYRUS … Give My Girl her FLOWERS,” he captioned the clip.

It was a show-stealing night for Cyrus, as the 31-year-old won her first Grammy in the best pop solo performance category thanks to “Flowers” before the eight-week Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 anthem invaded the Big Four and took home record of the year.

“This MC is going to stand by this MC, because this is just too iconic,” Cyrus said after being presented with the best pop solo performance Grammy by none other than Mariah Carey. “I was stuck in the rain in traffic and I thought I was going to miss this moment, and I could have missed this award, that’s fine — but not Mariah Carey.”

The former Hannah Montana star hit the stage to deliver a thrilling rendition of her “Flowers” anthem, which included the ad lib “Started to cry but then remembered I… I just won my first Grammy!”

Victoria Monet Gets Emotional After Seeing Ariana Grande’s Reaction to Her First Grammy Win

In a red carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight, Monét saw Ariana Grande’s Instagram Story for the first time, in which her longtime friend and musical collaborator gushed over the big win. “My friend, you deserve this one million times over,” Grande wrote on her Instagram Stories. “I am so deeply proud of and happy for you there are no words. You have worked so hard and given so much of yourself to this industry for so, so long while quietly being in your absolute own league. We’ve talked about this happening since the day we met and over many tour bus sleepovers.”

Upon seeing the post, Monet began tearing up. “Oh my God, I do not want to cry,” she said. “I love you Ari. If you’re hearing this, I love you so much. Thank you for being a believer and supporting me from the very beginning. You knew things that other people didn’t know and saw things in me that other people didn’t see. You’ve been so ride or die, so this is my love letter to you.”

Monét has co-written some of Grande’s biggest songs, including “Thank U, Next,” “Needy” and “Be Alright.” The duo also teamed up for their own collaboration, 2019’s “Monopoly.”

Smash Mouth Manager Blasts Steve Harwell’s Grammys ‘In Memoriam’ Snub: ‘Rude and Disrespectful’

The Grammys kept with its annual tradition of paying tribute to musicians we lost in the past year, honoring Tina Turner, Jimmy Buffett, Sinéad O’Connor and more at the 2024 ceremony. But one name was excluded from this year’s “In Memoriam” segment: Smash Mouth frontman Steve Harwell, who died at age 56 in September and was nominated alongside his band at the 2000 Grammys for “All Star.”

When asked about the omission on Monday (Feb. 5), Smash Mouth manager Robert Hayes told Billboard: “Does anyone watch the Grammys anymore? That show hasn’t been good in over 20 years. And they never acknowledged Steve when he was alive so why would we think they would honor him when he’s dead? Rude and disrespectful.”

Fans of the rock singer were quick to note on social media that Harwell’s name and face never appeared on air during the awards show’s mid-ceremony montage on Sunday night. “Really #Grammys? You forgot to include Steve Harwell from Smash Mouth during the In Memoriam segment?” one person posted to X shortly afterward. “He was a Grammy nominee!”

“Sad they forgot our friend Steve Harwell of @smashmouth,” wrote another fan, while a third person posted, “boycotting the Grammys until they tribute Steve Harwell.”

Billboard has reached out to the Recording Academy for comment.

Harwell and his band earned a 2000 Grammy nod for best pop performance by a duo or group with vocal for “All Star”; the award ended up going to Santana featuring The Project G&B for “Maria Maria.”

The frontman announced his retirement from Smash Mouth in 2021, writing in a statement, “Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a rock star performing in front of sold-out arenas and have been so fortunate to live out that dream. To my bandmates, it’s been an honor performing with you all these years. I can’t think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with.”

On Sept. 4, 2023, Harwell died at his home in Boise, Idaho, after being in hospice care. Prior to his death, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy — a disease of the heart muscle that can make it hard for the heart to deliver blood to the body — and battled a number of health issues as a result.

“Steve Harwell was a true American original,” Hayes wrote in a statement following the musician’s death. “A larger than life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle. Steve should be remembered for his unwavering focus and impassioned determination to reach the heights of pop stardom.”

“I wanted to say… as hard as it is to resist the urge to share another song or single with you all asap, I would really love for you to experience the album in full this time,” Grande wrote on her Instagram Stories on Monday (Feb. 5). “There will of course be more singles off of this project once it is out (and we may have a little surprise or two up our sleeves to hold you over until then so don’t you worry) but waiting a little longer for you to be able to listen fully through first really is my ideal way for you all experience this body of work.”

She went on to thank fans for “your trust in my vision and plan” for Eternal Sunshine. “You have waited so long for new music from me and I am so grateful for your patience,” she wrote. See the full Instagram Story before it disappears here.

Loosely based on the novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel, Palm Royale marks Martin’s first television project since Ryan Murphy’s drama The Assassination of Gianni Versace on FX, in which he played Antonio D’Amico.

In the trailer, Martin is seen as a server at an exclusive club serving up martinis. Later, he’s show swimming in a pool where he asks Wiig’s character, Maxine, who’s assimilating into the wealthy class, “Do you know anything about rich people?”

According to an official description of the television series, Palm Royale follows Maxine as she “attempts to cross that impermeable line between the haves and the have-nots … ‘Palm Royale’ asks the same question that still baffles us today: ‘How much of yourself are you willing to sacrifice to get what someone else has?’ Set during the powder keg year of 1969, ‘Palm Royale’ is a testament to every outsider fighting for their chance to truly belong.”

The series is written, executive produced, and showrun by Abe Sylvia for Aunt Sylvia’s Moving Picture Company. The first three episodes of Palm Royale premiere March 20 on Apple TV+, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through May 8.

Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Hiss’ Slithers Onto Billboard Global 200 at No. 1

Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss” debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 chart. With the launch, she becomes the first female rapper in a lead role to start atop the tally.

Meanwhile, Tate McRae’s “Greedy” rebounds for a fourth week atop the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. survey.

Elsewhere, Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” hits the Global 200’s top 10, jumping from No. 13 to No. 6, while three songs enter the Global Excl. U.S. top 10: Creepy Nuts’ “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” (16-7), Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” (15-9) and Noah Kahan’s “Stick Season” (12-10).

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts, which began in September 2020, rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.

Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.

‘Hiss’ Hits Global 200 at No. 1

Megan Thee Stallion’s “Hiss” opens atop the Billboard Global 200 with 39.6 million streams and 99,000 sold worldwide Jan. 26-Feb. 1. (In addition to the original version’s clean and explicit options released Jan. 26, an instrumental version and clean and explicit “chopped ‘n screwed” versions arrived Jan. 31.)

As the song soars in atop the Global 200, Megan Thee Stallion becomes the first female rapper in a lead role to debut atop the chart. She adds her second No. 1, after Cardi B’s “WAP,” on which she’s featured, led for three weeks in September-October 2020. (Among female rappers, Latto has also entered the ranking at No. 1, as featured on Jung Kook’s “Seven,” in July 2023; the song went on to reign for, fittingly, seven weeks.)

Jack Harlow’s “Lovin in Me” holds at No. 2 on the Global 200, after two weeks at No. 1 in January; Tate McRae’s “Greedy” keeps at No. 3, after two weeks at No. 1 beginning in November; Xavi’s “La Diabla” repeats at No. 4, after reaching No. 3; and Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?” falls to No. 5 after spending its first two weeks on the chart at No. 1.

Plus, Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” surges 13-6 in its second week on the Global 200, becoming his first top 10 hit. The song by the 21-year-old from Monroe, Wash., drew 40.4 million streams (up 31%) and sold 10,000 worldwide (up 20%) in the tracking week.

‘Greedy’ for More: McRae Back Atop Global Excl. U.S.

Tate McRae’s “Greedy” rules the Billboard Global Excl. U.S. chart for a fourth week, returning to the top from No. 2, with 39.6 million streams (down 3%) and 1,000 sold (down 4%) outside the U.S. Jan. 26-Feb. 1. The track became McRae’s first No. 1 on the chart in early December.

Ariana Grande’s “Yes, And?” drops to No. 2 after logging its first two weeks on Global Excl. U.S. at No. 1; Xavi’s “La Diabla” holds at No. 3, after reaching No. 2; Feid and ATL Jacob’s “Luna” is steady at its No. 4 high; and The Weeknd, Jennie and Lily Rose Depp’s “One of the Girls,” which hit the top 10 three weeks earlier, reaches the top five (7-5; 38.6 million streams outside the U.S., up 2%).

Three songs ascend to the Global Excl. U.S. top 10 – marking each act’s first appearance in the region – led by Creepy Nuts’ “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born,” which blasts 16-7 with 21.9 million streams (up 45%) and 7,000 sold (up 46%) outside the U.S. The track by the Japanese duo rose to No. 1 a week ago on the Billboard Japan Hot 100.

Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” leaps 15-9 on Global Excl. U.S. The song by the Conyers, Ga., native drew 22.5 million streams (up 18%) and 6,000 sold (up 13%) outside the U.S. in the tracking week.

Additionally, “Stick Season,” by Noah Kahan, from Strafford, Vt., climbs 12-10 on Global Excl. U.S., with 23.8 million streams (up 8%) and 3,000 sold (up 11%) outside the U.S.

The Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts (dated Feb. 10, 2024) will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, Feb. 6. For both charts, the top 100 titles are available to all readers on Billboard.com, while the complete 200-title rankings are visible on Billboard Pro, Billboard’s subscription-based service. How Canadian Music Took Over 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend

Toronto was alive with music at the 2024 NHL All-Star Weekend – not just on the ice, but all around the city.

As the hockey spectacle returned to the city for the first time since 2000, and to Canada for the first time since 2012, the multiple-day event brought live music from major stars including Justin Bieber, Tate McRae, Nelly Furtado and Diplo. It also included a viral press conference moment by crooner Michael Bublé, hockey players rubbing elbows with celebrities, and a spotlight for up-and-coming Canadian musicians including Loud Luxury, The Glorious Sons, TALK, The Reklaws and Owen Riegling.

As the stars of the game played each other in skills competitions and 3-on-3 hockey, music was an integral component. Each of the four teams chosen by an NHL player was co-captained by a celebrity: Tate McRae, Justin Bieber, Michael Bublé and Will Arnett. They weren’t just there to sit on the bench, but they helped choose each team at the player draft on Thursday night (Feb. 1). Bieber even helped out with the players’ on-ice warm-ups.

“We went all-in [with music] this year,” says Steve Mayer, the NHL’s Chief Content Officer. “We’re so happy that we we have what represents not only the best in the NHL coming here, but in our minds, the best in Canadian music. And being here in Canada with seven Canadian teams, we better know our Canadian music.”

When it comes to music and sports, it’s hard to beat the Super Bowl. The NFL’s halftime show has become one of the top music events of the year, with fans obsessing (and sometimes even betting) about who will get the coveted headlining spot, who the special guests will be and which songs they’ll perform.

Of the “big four” sports leagues, the NHL lags behind the others including the NBA and Major League Baseball in terms of television ratings and attendance – but not in Canada. Here, the National Hockey League is the most popular professional league, according to a 2023 survey by the Angus Reid Institute. Though basketball fever reached a peak in Canada in 2019 with the Toronto Raptors’ first championship, the Toronto Maple Leafs are still a major money-maker in the city and the other Canadian teams are not far behind.

It’s hard to compete with the other major leagues for celebrity and star power – especially now that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship has turned Kansas City Chiefs into full-on mainstream pop culture events. But hockey culture is so ingrained with some conceptions of Canadian identity that the success of the music integration this year shows how strong the country’s artists are right now.

The headliner of this year’s NHL All-Star Game was one of the biggest artists in the world. Tate McRae peformed between the second and third intermission of the main event on Saturday night (Feb. 3). The Calgary-born singer played “greedy,” her song that’s hit No. 1 on the Billboard Canadian and Global Hot 100, along with “exes” and, for the first time, “run for the hills.” All are from her latest album, Think Later, whose cover features the singer in goalie pads (sure, on the wrong legs).

McRae comes from a hockey family, and the sport’s culture is a major part of her current image. So it felt natural to see her perform on three different stages on the ice in a glittery top with six dancers and the production value you might see at a big award show.

Mayer says the NHL has its own production unit staffed with people from the concert industry, and a team that deals specifically with music clearance. For many artists in Canada, like the Arkells and the Beaches, getting a song played on Hockey Night In Canada is a rite of passage. Rock band The Glorious Sons told Billboard Canada getting their song “Speed of Light” on the broadcast was a point of breakthrough for them.

Mayer says the NHL’s team prides itself on the entertainment they’re able to produce. It pays off when you have a major artist like McRae who is such a proponent of the game. “My family has been really involved with hockey my whole life, but I was always really busy with dance so I honestly couldn’t get too, too into it,” McRae tells Billboard Canada. “And for the past year or two years now, I feel like I’ve fully immersed myself in the hockey world.”

In another interview with Billboard Canada, Michael Bublé says he’s proud seeing what McRae has accomplished and called her before the game. “I told her I was happy for and proud for her,” he says. “And as a Canadian, it made me happy to see another young Canadian breaking through….Honestly, we’re kind of dominating music right now. We are sending a ton of artists out there, and we’ve already got a ton of career artists out there. This little place made a bunch of great ones.”

Bublé went viral in an All-Star press conference by saying he made his All-Star picks while high on mushrooms, a likely joke that was taken seriously by a lot of people online. “That’s what I was sent to do,” he says in a rare moment of seriousness in our conversation, before doing his impression of a rote and cliché-ridden hockey player interview about giving 110%. “I’m an entertainer, man. And the truth is, I’m living my best life. I’m having so much fun.”

Despite his non-stop banter, Bublé took the weekend very seriously. According to Mayer, the league sent him stats and intel so he could choose the best team possible along with captain Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks. (His team didn’t win, though, ultimately losing to hometown hero Auston Matthews’ team co-captained by Bieber). An owner of junior hockey team the Vancouver Giants, he is a massive hockey fan and a friend to many of the players.

So is Bieber, who’s often seen hanging out with Matthews and other Leafs like William Nylander and Mitch Marner. Bieber’s drew house clothing label designed this year’s NHL All-Star sweaters, and that brought a rare cool factor to the league that nearly rivals the collectible special edition jerseys of the NBA.

That factor revved way up on Thursday night (Feb. 1), when Bieber played an invite-only concert at the 2,500-capacity venue History, his first gig in over a year. Diplo, The Kid Laroi and Nelly Furtado also played at concerts over the weekend, but Bieber’s was the one that captured the most headlines and social media attention in a set that spanned his whole career.

“This is a guy who’s 100% totally into the Toronto Maple Leafs,” says Mayer. “Of course we’re going to want to work with him any way we can.”

“There’s a good old saying: rock stars want to be athletes, athletes want to be rock stars,” says Mayer. “And we take advantage of that. When they get here, and they’re amongst these athletes, especially those they really admire, they turn into fans.”

This story originally appeared on Billboard Canada.
