Ariana Grande Shares New ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Album Teaser: Listen

As winter comes to a close, the sun is starting to hang around in the sky for a bit longer with each passing day. For Ariana Grande, however, sunshine is eternal. In anticipation of Eternal Sunshine — which is out on all platforms on Friday (March 8) — Grande has taken to her social media accounts to share a new teaser for her forthcoming LP.

The promotional clip finds Grande posing in the outfit and glam she wears on the official Eternal Sunshine album covers. A distorted snippet of an unidentified song — some fans are theorizing that it’s a tease of the album’s next radio single, “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” — plays in the background as the Grammy winner lounges in a Maison Margiela ensemble consisting of a white cotton bodysuit and a pair of red tulle gloves. For her glam, the “7 Rings” singer opted for a Sweetener-esque low blonde ponytail and a bold red lip.

“。˚❀*·ꕤ tomorow night .゚*ꕤ,” she captioned the Instagram post.

Eternal Sunshine marks Grande’s seventh studio album and her first LP since 2020’s Positions, making this her longest gap between full-length releases. Since Positions — which launched at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, sent its title track to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and scored two Grammy nods — Grande has been hard at work filming Wicked, the two-part movie musicals based on the hit Broadway show. She is set to star as Glinda the Good Witch alongside Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba.

While she may have been hard at work in Oz, Grande didn’t completely ghost the Billboard charts. In the years following Positions, she earned a pair of Hot 100 chart-toppers alongside The Weeknd — 2021’s “Save Your Tears” (two weeks) and 2023’s “Die for You” (one week).

Grande kicked off her Eternal Sunshine era at the top of 2024 with the release of “Yes, And?” The Max Martin-helmed house bop debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 — Grande’s sixth song to do so — and later received a remix featuring fellow chart-conquering diva Mariah Carey. Inspired by the Oscar-winning Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Grande’s new record features contributions from Martin, Ilya, Oscar Görres and Nonna, Ariana’s grandmother.

The Latin Grammy-winning artist has collected a robust catalogue of hits since launching his career with the mariacheño song “Adiós Amor” in 2017. Now, Nodal is the soloist with the most No. 1 songs on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart. From “De Los Besos Que Te Di” to “No Te Contaron Mal” and his latest “Un Cumbión Dolido,” the 25-year-old singer has placed a total of 15 champs since the list launched in 1994.

Most recently, Nodal has leaned on his experimental side teaming up with acts such as Peso Pluma and Residente. Travis Kelce Recalls Being Chased by Helicopters With Taylor Swift at the Sydney Zoo

On the latest episode of his New Heights podcast Wednesday (March 6), Travis Kelce debriefed his brother, retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, about his recent voayage to Australia with Taylor Swift.

Starting with his much-publicized trip to the Sydney Zoo on Feb. 22, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end revealed how paparazzi were able to snap so many bird’s-eye-view photos of him and his superstar girlfriend as they were checking out the animals. “There were full-on helicopters just flying around,” he recalled. “They helicoptered us. Well, not us — Taylor.”

“This is all because Taylor is the biggest and the best thing possible,” he added.

The flying photographers didn’t stop him from enjoying the exhibits, though. “Saw a tiger sitting up in a tree house — that s–t was f–king sweet.” he continued. “Saw a lion close up.”

Demonstrating how he took a photo with Swift in front of the lion exhibit, Travis added, “When you hear [them roar], cause Taylor took the picture … you’re just like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ Let alone one, you see three of them run down from their rock, their perch, knowing they’re about to get fed. You see how fast and agile that thing is — dude it’s over.”

The day after their outing, Swift performed a sold-out Eras Tour show at Accor Stadium, where she also gushed about the zoo. “We’ve been 100% of our days off,” she told the crowd, having also gone to the Sydney Zoo solo before Travis arrived. “I’m really all about the red panda. I think you guys don’t understand how cool kangaroos are because you have so many. They are so cool, so strong. So bouncy.”

Travis was in the audience Feb. 23, enjoying the show alongside Katy Perry, Rita Ora and tens of thousands of screaming fans. Reflecting on the show — his first time seeing the Eras Tour since catching a concert in Buenos Aires in November — the Ohio native told his brother, “I’m pretty sure the crowds over there are, they’re already rowdy, but Australians are pretty rowdy.”

“They like to have a good time, I like to have a good time,” he continued. “They were just a little bit louder than the Argentinian crowd. I was not expecting that because the Argentinian crowd was f–king loud. Taylor’s very fond of performing in Australia because of the crowds over there and how into it they get.”

Billboard Explains: Why Karol G Is Woman of the Year 2024

In 2023, Karol G shared her ultimate dream with Billboard: “If you asked me, ‘Karol, what would be your dream?’ That your name be recognized worldwide. That would be amazing.” Fast forward to today, and it’s clear she’s not just dreaming it anymore — she’s living it.

Wednesday (March 6) marks a significant milestone for the Colombian superstar, as she is set to receive the prestigious Woman of the Year award at the 2024 Billboard Women In Music Awards. This recognition makes her the first artist who primarily records in Spanish to claim the honor since the ceremony’s inauguration in 2007 — a testament to her unparalleled impact and influence in the industry.

The Medellín native has not only shattered records, but also solidified her legacy in Latin music and beyond. With an impressive tally of 30 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including top 10 hit “TQG” alongside Shakira, her achievements speak volumes. Yet, it’s on the Hot Latin Songs chart where Karol G’s star truly dazzles. On that tally, she boasts a record-breaking 63 entries — the highest for any female artist. Furthermore, her 26 top 10 hits and eight No. 1s, including chart-toppers such as “MAMIII” with Becky G, “Tusa” featuring Nicki Minaj and “Provenza” highlight her dominance.

In fact, Karol G ranks third in the number of No. 1 hits among women on the Hot Latin Songs chart, trailing behind only Gloria Estefan with 15 and Shakira with 13 each.

“With her immense talent, Karol G has created a movement for women across the globe due to her empowering lyrics and inspiring confidence,” said Hannah Karp, Billboard’s editorial director, when Karol G was announced as the Woman of the Year honoree. “The release of her groundbreaking album Mañana Será Bonito has proven her a force to be reckoned with in both the English and Spanish charts. We are so excited to honor her as Woman of the Year.”

“Karol G has become a global superstar performing in Spanish,” added Leila Cobo, Billboard’s chief content officer, Latin/Español. “It shows that music and artistry are not bound by language or borders, and Billboard recognizes that. This is truly a historic moment for the brand and for Latin music.”

Tickets to attend the Billboard Women in Music Awards presented by Marriott Bonvoy are available to the public. Fans can watch the show on Thursday, March 7, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on billboardwomeninmusic.com.

On the Heels of His First Hit, George Birge Talks Making Time for a Follow-Up With ‘Cowboy Songs’

Country careers are built, as The Oak Ridge Boys like to say, on “three minutes of magic.” And the next most important ingredient for career longevity, as The Oaks also like to say, is “three more minutes of magic.”

George Birge found his first three-minute life-changer with “Mind on You,” a mysterious-sounding 2022 release about romantic obsession that peaked at No. 2 on Country Airplay on Jan. 6, 2024.

Of course, the three-minute creations don’t usually appear through magic. Songwriters typically spend hours – months sometimes – working on songs that never get heard outside the publisher’s office. And even when they do get into public circulation, a song that feels seamless may not reflect the amount of time that went into its creation.

Trending on Billboard

“As songwriters, we go into the deepest, darkest corners of these things, trying to create magic and trying to create stuff that people feel,” Birge says. “You never know if that extra two hours or three hours you spend on a 10-second part of the song, or direction, is even going to resonate, or if people are ever gonna catch it.”

That provides a solid framework for what’s likely to become Birge’s second “thee minutes of magic.” “Cowboy Songs,” released by RECORDS Nashville to country radio via PlayMPE on Feb. 22, is – like “Mind On You” – a mysterious-sounding song about romantic obsession, but its 187-second script required perhaps 17 hours to write on its date of creation, and then another six months or so to fully develop its final sonic persona.

Birge leaned into it with three fellow writers on Feb. 3, 2023, in a retreat at a Tims Ford lake house, between Lynchburg and Winchester, south of Nashville. By leaving town, Birge says, “I can turn the real world off for a second [and] have a lot more fruitful songwriting.”

The time of year helped that effort.

“It was dead of the winter, and I think that was the best thing for us,” says co-writer Michael Tyler (“Somewhere On A Beach,” “Girl Like You”). “All we did the whole time was write. I think we wrote three or four songs in two days. And we knew instantly that this was the one. If it was during the summertime, I don’t think we would have wrote any of those. We would just be out on a boat.”

“Cowboy Songs” originated with songwriter/producer Matt McGinn (“Bury Me In Georgia,” “7500 OBO”), who had the hook – “she only dances to cowboy songs” – but thought it would work best if the music was somewhat antithetical to the lyrical theme.

“We wanted it to be something you wouldn’t expect,” Tyler says.

Songwriter/producer Lalo Guzman (Sammy Arriaga, Dylan Schneider) whipped out a track he’d created that he believed would be too far afield, but he liked it and figured it would at least give them a starting place to explore the sound’s direction. His co-writers all jumped in on that very track.

“I was like, ‘For real?’” Guzman recalls. “It was just wild.”

Tyler sang what became the hook at the start of the chorus, and they knocked out a good part of that stanza before jumping to the opening verse, where they set up the scenario. The protagonist had staked out a place in a bar, where he’d ordered a mystery woman’s favorite drink and brought a lighter to attend to her smoking needs. The guy didn’t know her name or if she’d even show up, but he was prepared if she did.

“As a younger kid, when I first started going out to bars and stuff with a fake ID, you would see this girl that’s just like magic,” Birge remembers. “She’s captivating a room. Everybody’s looking at her – and this is back when Austin had these cash-only bars and it was smoking, and edgy, and jukebox. I was immediately transported back to that scene, and I was like, ‘Okay, how do I capture that in a song?’ and like, ‘Who is she? And who’s watching her?’”

When they got back to the chorus, they revised the foundation a bit to change things up. “We were singing the chorus over the same verse chords for a second,” Tyler says. “I can’t remember who it was – maybe it was Lalo, the producer – that was like, ‘What if we went somewhere completely different for the chorus chords?’ It really lifted and took that chorus into a different space, and made it made it a lot more hooky.”

Birge dropped in a Waylon Jennings reference – “I definitely was very heavily influenced by Waylon, so it’s probably not an accident,” Birge says – and they kept a Texas-based narrative in verse two, with a note that “She makes love like an Amarillo rain.”

“In Texas, rain is very hard to come by, and you’re always praying for it,” Birge explains. “You’re begging for it to come, and then when it does rain, it’s long and steady, and it lasts forever. That was the vision I had.”

Much of the 17 hours on the retreat was devoted to the demo, which included enough steel guitar and Dobro to insert a little Western flare into the mysterious sound. They worked on the master multiple times, with Andy Ellison providing steel at the beginning and Birge spending three hours on the vocal track, drinking tequila to set the barroom mood and focusing on specific inflections. They blended three different basses to get the low end sound, but they kept going back to the studio in an attempt to get the drums right. Originally, it had no live drums, then Guzman oversaw a session that took the percussion too far afield. Finally, McGinn worked with drummer Phil Lawson, who held back during much of the three minutes, but pounded the snares when it fit.

“Matt took it to where it needed to go to,” Guzman says. “I was almost envisioning it a little too pop – like The Weeknd kind of drums. For some reason, the groove wasn’t clicking. Matt brought in that space that I wasn’t hearing.”

Sometime after the song’s completion, McGinn was arrested Oct. 31 on a domestic violence charge. He has, Birge says, dedicated himself to recovery.

Meanwhile, Birge began playing “Cowboy Songs” live during the fall, planning it as his next single. It debuted at No. 55 on the Country Airplay chart dated March 9, two weeks ahead of the label’s impact date. “I’ve never had a song that we play live react like this,” he says. “I go to the meet and greet line, and every single person in line would be like, ‘This song, “She only dances to cowboy songs,” when does that come out?’”

Thus, early indications suggest that the 17-hour writing session and the months of agonizing over drums sounds may have given Birge what he most needed from “Cowboy Songs”: three more minutes of magic.

Annie Lennox, Jackson Browne & More Sign Open Letter Warning of Nuclear Threat Ahead of Expected ‘Oppenheimer’ Oscar Sweep

In the run-up to the Oscars on Sunday (March 10), a coalition of actors, musicians and activists will issue an open letter to Hollywood on the significance of Christopher Nolan’s film Oppenheimer and the real-life threats of nuclear war.

The coalition includes members of Oppenheimer‘s cast and crew, as well as such bold-faced names as Annie Lennox, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Emma Thompson, Jane Fonda, Julianne Moore, Lily Tomlin, Michael Douglas, Rosanna Arquette and Viggo Mortensen. J. Robert Oppenheimer’s grandson, activist Charles Oppenheimer, also joined this call-to-action. The letter will be posted on MakeNukesHistory.org Wednesday (March 6), and will be printed in a full page ad in Thursday’s Los Angeles Times

Under the headline “An Open Letter to Hollywood on Oppenheimer and Nuclear War,” the ad says, in part:

Trending on Billboard

“Oppenheimer depicts the origin story of nuclear weapons, the history of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Oppenheimer’s subsequent warnings against an arms race and the development of even more powerful weapons. Oppenheimer was right to warn us.

“Today, 13,000 nuclear weapons are held by nine countries. Some are 80 times more powerful than the ones that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

“As artists and advocates, we want to raise our voices to remind people that while Oppenheimer is history, nuclear weapons are not.

“At a time of great uncertainty, even one nuclear weapon — on land, under the sea, in the air, or in space — is too many. To protect our families, our communities, and our world, we must demand that global leaders work to make nuclear weapons history — and build a brighter future. Please join us — before our luck runs out.”

This is part of a multipronged “Make Nukes History” campaign launching this week, leveraging the attention on Oppenheimer to elevate the conversation about the nuclear threat.

This week, billboards, murals and wheatpastes are popping up around Hollywood, calling attention to the risks of nukes. In the coming days, there will be an art installation at the Original Farmers Market near The Grove in Los Angeles. Backed by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI), a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, the campaign aims to raise awareness about the risks posed by today’s nuclear arsenals.

The campaign is taking place across Los Angeles and includes, in addition to billboards, a mural in West Hollywood and more than 1,000 street posters, proclaiming “Oppenheimer Started It, We Can End It” and “13 Oppenheimer Nominations; 13,000 Nuclear Weapons.”

For more information on the campaign and to read the open letter, visit MakeNukesHistory.org

Some of these signees to the open letter have been anti-nuclear activists for decades. Nash and Browne were among the organizers of No Nukes/The MUSE Concerts for a Non-Nuclear Future, which were held in September 1979 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Fonda also participated in that event. A triple-disk live album from the concerts was released in late 1979 and made the top 20 on the Billboard 200.

Douglas and Fonda starred in the 1979 thriller The China Syndrome, about a fictional accident at a nuclear power plant. The film, which Douglas produced, was released theatrically on March 16, 1979, 12 days before the Three Mile Island nuclear accident proved that the film’s premise was not far-fetched.

Kacey Musgraves Discusses Recording ‘Deeper Well’ at Electric Lady Studios: ‘Every Studio Has Its Own Energy’

Kacey Musgraves is taking fans farther into her Deeper Well.

Musgraves’ has an upcoming interview on Sunday TODAY With Willie Geist, and Billboard has an exclusive clip of the conversation. The chat took place at New York City’s iconic Electric Lady Studios, where Musgraves recorded her upcoming album, Deeper Well, out March 15 via Interscope Records/MCA Nashville.

Electric Lady Studios, in Greenwich Village, was commissioned by Jimi Hendrix in 1968. Though Hendrix spent only 10 weeks recording in the studio prior to his death in 1970, the studio has gone on to become a beloved creative and recording oasis for artists including Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, AC/DC, Billy Idol, Questlove, Adele, Keith Richards, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift.

“This was the studio that we kind of inhabited for the few months that we spent working on this,” Musgraves tells Geist in the exclusive clip. “It was truly an amazing experience.”

Musgraves says of drawing inspiration from Electric Lady Studios, “Every studio has its own energy, but this one has such a storied past. This building — and it literally being Jimi Hendrix’s apartment — right here, that’s some seriously good mojo. I just know so many amazing creatives are drawn to creating here, and there’s a reason.

Geist comments that the colorful murals on the studio walls are from when Hendrix had the studio created, while Musgraves noted, “I don’t think it’s been touched. I think it’s pretty original … He commissioned these, which they still look amazing. They still look space-agey.”

She also discusses the studio’s location in the heart of Greenwich Village. “As you know there’s such a rich folk-music history, songwriter history, poets, activism — all of that happened here,” Musgraves said. “I was very drawn to getting out of Nashville and creating somewhere where there was a different energy, a different life kind of bubbling around you. I just think New York is one of the most unique cities in the world. It’s inspiring for sure.”

Musgraves recently released the album’s title track, and performed both “Deeper Well” and “Too Good to Be True” during an appearance on Saturday Night Live.

The full interview between Musgraves and Geist airs Sunday, March 10, on NBC. Watch the clip from the interview below:

ScHoolboy Q’s ‘Blue Lips’: All 18 Songs Ranked

The LA rapper’s long-awaited sixth solo album rarely misses.

ScHoolboy is right, Blue Lips is his best album.

Over the weekend, the South Central rapper ranked his albums and broke down each choice, with his most recent effort being his top pick.

He explained why on X:

Indeed, these are weird times we’re living in. Trends and numbers are being chased more than ever as the algorithm reigns supreme. Q mentioned on X how CrasH Talk might’ve been disappointing to some because he “was chasing the first week numbers.” However, once he started rolling out this project a month ago, it was clear Blue Lips was going to be different. The melancholy “Bluesides” video gave us a glimpse into the direction he was going. With Kendrick’s departure and SZA’s ascension to critically acclaimed superstar, the pressure was on for his sixth solo effort to usher in a new era at TDE on the rap side of things. And he did just that. Blue Lips is his most complete body of work to date. He’s honest, he’s vulnerable, he’s more mature, he’s just better.

This was a tall task, but we ranked each song from the album below.
