In spite of Taylor Swift canceling her Eras Tour stop in Austria due to the discovery of a terrorist plot targeting the concerts, two fans were able to find a moment of joy when they got engaged in Vienna among a huge gathering of Swifties Thursday (Aug. 8). The closing ceremony of the Summer Olympic games will feature a performance from H.E.R. The five-time Grammy winner will take the stage at the Stade de France on Sunday (August 11) to sing the U.S. National Anthem as part of the elaborate handover to the next host city, Los Angeles in 2028.
NBC’s most viral special correspondent, Snoop Dogg, announced the news on Thursday night (August 8), when he chatted up Olympics broadcast host Mike Tirico about LA28. “We got a lot of super talented people that’s going to be gettin’ down, doin’ what they do, makin’ it come true… for the red, white and the blue,” Snoop said.

Snoop then said he’s a fan of H.E.R. and he would love for her to perform the “Star Spangled Banner.” “Yeah, H.E.R. will also be performing the National Anthem,” Snoop said of the 27-year-old who is already just a Tony away from notching EGOT status.

A statement from LA28 confirmed the news on Friday morning (August 9), along with the news that LA28 has revealed the new custom LA28 emblem that has been designed to celebrate the next host city’s vibe. The colorful logo features the Olympic rings underneath a bold black L and 28 with a purple guitar adorned with blue sunglasses making up the A portion.

“I can’t wait to bring this experience to Los Angeles,” said Long Beach native Snoop, who has been having the very best time in the City of Light learning the ins-and-outs of equestrian competition and fine French dining while hopping in the pool with Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps, carrying the Olympic torch and hanging with pal Martha Stewart.

“This was amazing, but I just feel like L.A. is gonna be a supersize version of what we just did,” Snoop said of the city’s third go hosting after first bringing the world to the west coast in 1932 and then again in 1984.

The closing ceremony begins at 3 p.m. ET live and will then re-run at 7 p.m. ET. Unlike the unique opening ceremony that took place along the Seine River with performances from Lady Gaga, Celine Dion and French metal band Gojira, the closing will be in the stadium that has hosted the track and field and other events. Team USA swimmer Katie Leadecky and rower Nick Mead will be the flag bearers at the closing, which will be heavily focused on the hand-over to the L.A. games.

The closing ceremony will also reportedly include performances from Snoop, as well as fellow L.A.-based stars Billie Eilish and the Red Hot Chili Peppers in a mix of live and pre-taped bits. Tom Cruise is also reportedly slated to rappel from the top of the Stade de France with the Olympic flag and skydive onto the iconic Hollywood sign in a pre-taped segment.

A third person has been detained by Austrian authorities in connection with the foiled terror plot to attack fans at Taylor Swift‘s now-cancelled Eras Tour shows in Vienna this weekend. The Associated Press reported that an unnamed 18-year-old man was arrested Thursday evening (August 8) following the earlier arrests of the 19-year-old main suspect in the incident and a 17-year-old, both of whom were taken into custody on Tuesday.
At press time no additional information was available on the third suspect or on what charges the three men might be facing in connection with what officials describe as plans to unleash a potentially devastating mass casualty event by the trio. The main suspect has told police that he planned to attack Swifties gathered outside Ernst Happel Stadium for what were supposed to be three shows (August 8, 9, 10) at the 65,000-capacity venue.

Officials had expected up to 30,000 fans without tickets to post up outside the stadium each night, with the 19-year-old telling officials that he planned to drive a vehicle into the throng and attack those gathered for the concerts with knives or homemade explosives at Thursday or Friday night’s shows in order to “kill as many people as possible.”

The attack was reportedly inspired by the terror groups al-Qaida and the Islamic State, with the main suspect and the 18-year-old arrested on Friday allegedly pledging an “oath of allegiance” to ISIS; CNN described the 18-year-old as an Iraqi national who was detained as part of the “broad scope” of the ongoing investigation as the interior ministry is “taking decisive action against anyone who might be involved in terrorist activities or exhibits radical tendencies.”

CNN also reported that during their investigation at the main suspect’s home, police investigators said they found bomb-making materials, detonators, 21,000 euros in counterfeit money, machetes, knives and anabolic steroids. Authorities also said the main suspect quit his job on July 25, saying he had “something big planned.” Islamic State and al-Qaida-related materials were also found at the 17-year-old’s home. According to the AP, the latter has so far refused to talk to authorities, who also revealed that he’d been hired earlier this week by a company that was providing unspecified services at the venue for the anticipated shows.

The 18-year-old arrested on Friday also reportedly swore the oath to the terror groups and “comes from the social environment” of the main suspect, but is not believed to be directly linked to the foiled plot.

At press time Swift had not made any public statement about the cancellation of the shows or the reports about the thwarted attack and a spokesperson had not returned a request for additional comment.

While breathing a sigh of relief that Austrian authorities broke up the plot before it could be carried out, crestfallen Swifties who’d traveled from all over the world and Europe consoled each other in the Vienna streets on Thursday by gathering to sing Swift’s songs and trade friendship bracelets. The superfans flooded Corneliusgasse street — a boulevard in Vienna that shares a name with Swift’s song “Cornelia Street” — where they traded the tour’s signature bracelets, hung them from trees and sang “But Daddy I Love Him” from Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department album. In another silver lining scene, a pair of Swifties got engaged on the streets of Vienna in a “Love Story” brought to life.

The Vienna shows were supposed to be the penultimate run on the European leg of Swift’s Eras Tour. On Thursday, officials in the UK said that there is no indication that the Vienna cancellation will have any impact on next week’s kick-off of a five-night (August 15-20) night run at London’s Wembley Stadium.

Travis Scott was arrested at a Paris hotel on Friday (August 9) after reportedly getting into a fight with a security guard. Beautifully Ordinary is Tones’ second album, and the followup to Welcome To The Madhouse, which also debut at No. 1 in 2021. The one-time busker’s debut EP The Kids Are Coming peaked at No. 3 in 2019. Though it didn’t climb the chart mountain, The Kids Are Coming did house “Dance Monkey,” Tones’ breakthrough hit which reigned over the charts in more than 30 countries, including a record, 24-week stint atop the ARIA Chart.

Tones owns the second consecutive ARIA No. 1 by an Australian act, following Lime Cordiale’s drought-breaking leader last week with Enough Of The Sweet Talk.

“Well, when it rains, it pours,” notes ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd. “Tones has given us two Australian No. 1s two weeks in a row. A huge congratulations to Tones and her team on this incredible achievement. We’re absolutely thrilled for you and all of your accomplishments across an outstanding career so far.”

Also new to the top tier of the national chart is the collaborative project of Bernard Fanning (former frontman of Powderfinger) and Paul Dempsey (Something For Kate). Fanning Dempsey National Park’s The Deluge arrives at No. 3.

Prior to disbanding in the 2010, Powderfinger landed six ARIA No. 1 albums, all consecutive, while Something For Kate bagged two leaders, according to ARIA. Also, two of Fanning’s four solo albums have led the chart (Tea & Sympathy and Departures) while two of Dempsey’s three solo albums have peaked at No. 5.

Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, and Ty Dolla $ign earn a top 10 debut with Vultures 2, which swoops in at No. 4.

Aussie punk rockers Dune Rats drop in at No. 29 with their fifth album, If It Sucks, Turn It Up. It’s the followup to 2022’s Real Rare Whale, which peaked at No. 6.

It’s winter in Australia, though Charli XCX’s Brat summer is sweeping through the ARIA Charts. Following the release of a remix featuring Billie Eilish, Brat album track “Guess” debuts at No. 1 on the singles tally, for her first solo leader.

“Guess” is Charli’s fifth top 10 hit in Australia, after “I Love It” (with Icona Pop) in 2012 and “Fancy” (with Iggy Azalea), “Bloom Clap” and “Break The Rules” in 2014. Charli also takes a bite out of the chart with “Apple” at No. 18, and “360” moves 27-24.

Taylor Swift‘s The Eras Tour shows in Vienna, scheduled for Aug. 8, 9, and 10 may be cancelled, but it hasn’t dampened the spirit of Swifties in Vienna, who have transformed the city into a celebration of Taylor’s music and community.

The cancellation came after Austrian authorities arrested two suspects on Aug. 7, who were reportedly planning an attack on the concerts. According to police reports, the suspects had radicalized online and intended to carry out an attack at the Ernst Happel Stadium, where the shows were set to take place.

The decision to cancel the concerts was made in coordination with Swift’s management and local authorities, with the safety of the expected 65,000 concertgoers each night being the top priority.

In the wake of the cancellations, fans in Vienna took to the streets on Aug. 8 to make the most of their time in the city and meet fellow fans.

One of the most heartwarming scenes unfolded on Corneliusgasse, a street in Vienna that shares a name with Swift’s song “Cornelia Street.” Here, fans traded handmade friendship bracelets and hung them from trees, strengthening the connections they’ve formed through Swift’s music.

24 hours after we found out our @taylorswift13 concert was cancelled because of an ISIS terrorist plot Swifties have gathered at “Cornelia street” to sing, trade friendship bracelets and just feel joy. Radicalization is a real threat, but the cowards can’t beat Swifties pic.twitter.com/a51pRVgS4s— Ariella (tortured poet version) (@ariellakimmel) August 8, 2024

In one particularly sweet moment caught on video and shared on social media, two Taylor Swift fans got engaged in Vienna in their very own “Love Story.”

The touching proposal was met with cheers and tears from the gathered fans, adding a special note of joy to an otherwise challenging day.

According to fans on social media, local businesses and cultural institutions also extended their support to the disappointed fans.

Several museums offered free entry to those holding concert tickets, while cafes and restaurants provided complimentary food and drinks.

In the face of fear and uncertainty, Swifties have turned a cancelled concert into a city-wide celebration of resilience, music, and friendship—a true reflection of the spirit of Swift’s Eras Tour.

The Paris 2024 Olympics will reportedly conclude with a musical celebration featuring some of Los Angeles’ most prominent artists.
According to an exclusive report from Variety, the Aug. 11 closing ceremony will feature performances by three of L.A.’s most influential acts: Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, each representing different facets of the city’s rich cultural heritage.

According to the publication, the artists will be seen from Los Angeles in a mix of pre-taped and live performances, a musical handover for the 2028 L.A. Olympic Games.

A native of Highland Park, Billie Eilish has become one of the defining musical voices of her generation. Her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, not only topped the Billboard 200 but also made her the youngest artist to sweep all four major Grammy categories in a single year.

Eilish, whose hits like “Bad Guy” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, famously paid homage to her city’s iconic landmarks and culture in her 2021 concert film, Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles.

Snoop Dogg, a cornerstone of West Coast rap, has already been a standout figure throughout the Paris Games. From his viral commentary for NBC to his role as the U.S. Olympic torchbearer, Snoop has brought his charisma to the global stage and solidified himself and somewhat of an unofficial ambassador for the country.

Snoop, whose career spans three decades, has consistently charted on the Billboard Hot 100, including his debut single “Who Am I (What’s My Name?)” and collaborations like “Drop It Like It’s Hot”. Beyond his music career, Snoop has ventured into acting, launched a successful line of cannabis products, and even hosted a cooking show with Martha Stewart.

Rounding out the musical trifecta are hometown heroes, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Formed in Los Angeles in 1983, the band has been a driving force in the city’s music scene for decades.

The band has a long history of success on the Billboard charts, with albums like Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication dominating the Billboard 200. Their hit singles “Under the Bridge” and “Scar Tissue” are also staples on the Billboard Hot 100.

But the music isn’t the only draw. Hollywood’s Tom Cruise is reportedly set to perform a stunt that rivals his most famous movie scenes, according to TMZ.

Cruise will reportedly rappel from the top of Stade de France clutching the Olympic flag, followed by a pre-recorded segment showing him skydiving onto the iconic Hollywood sign.
