The 10 Hottest Female Rappers Right Now

Billboard complies its first-ever Hottest Female Rappers List based on quality of records, chart success, buzz within the culture, notable business endeavors and partnerships, and touring success…

In the last few years, women have been behind the wheel in driving hip-hop forward. Though the rap game reveled in watching two male behemoths, Drake and Kendrick Lamar, collide this spring, the catalyst for this year of competitive rap began when Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion engaged in lyrical warfare at the top of 2024. Though the two clashed in a spirited battle, the tides have settled, as both later embarked on record-setting arena tours.

Aside from delivering bristling raps on the competitive front, the rap game has enjoyed a front-row seat in the past calendar year to the rise of Sexxy Red, Ice Spice and Flo Milli, who have each clocked Hot 100 top 20 hits in the past 12 months. Then, rap technicians like Grammy-nominated MCs Rapsody and Tierra Whack further solidified their status as cerebral markswomen, with captivating rhymes on their acclaimed 2024 full-length releases. Even fresher names like Anycia and Karrahboo are looking to elevate in rank and contend amongst their contemporaries.

With an array of talent percolating, Billboard has created a list of the current hottest female rappers in the game. Covering the first six months of 2024, Billboard’s criteria for selecting the following ten artists are based on quality of records, chart success, buzz within the culture, notable business endeavors and partnerships, and touring success. Then, by December, Billboard will create a final list based on the overall achievements of that calendar year, crowning the hottest female rapper of 2024.

Look below and see who cracked Billboard’s first iteration of the hottest female rappers list.

How La India Revolutionized Salsa Music & ‘Never Looked Back’

Although it’s one of her greatest hits, La India was hesitant about recording “Ese Hombre,” the 1994 song that ultimately became a certified anthem for Latin women across generations. “I thought the lyrics were too harsh,” the Puerto Rican-born star says today. “I love men and I didn’t feel anger towards them. I thought, ‘How am I going to sing this?’”

Finding inspiration from one of her favorite artists (Rocío Jurado, who sang the song in the ’70s) and a nudge from renowned hitmaker Sergio George (who produced her breakthrough 1994 album Dicen Que Soy, home to “Ese Hombre,” and assured her the song would be a hit), La India belted the lyrics, about a man who is “a false, vain clown who is also mean and spiteful,” over her signature blend of salsa with an R&B and hip-hop sensibility. Singing with so much conviction, and with her unmatched vocal prowess, she inevitably became the voice of a generation, and a fixture in salsa music.

The track peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Tropical Airplay chart, where it ruled for five weeks. In fact, she has a total of 11 leaders on that tally, most of any woman artist. Over on the Tropical Albums chart, she’s had 15 career entries – also the most for any female act – with six reaching No. 1, including Dicen Que Soy, which also featrures her timeless Marc Anthony duet “Vivir Lo Nuestro.”

Trending on Billboard

Born Linda Caballero, the 55-year-old artist comes from a musical family. Both her mother and grandmother were singers and took notice of La India’s vocal abilities early on. “My grandma nurtured me with music,” says La India, who grew up in the South Bronx area in New York listening to myriad genres, including hip-hop, salsa, pop and rock. “At five [years old], I could sing songs from beginning to end, a cappella and on key.” In her teen years, she joined freestyle and house music group TKA, and says she’s “very proud” of the dance projects she released in her early 20s.

But salsa was her destiny, she adds.

“When I transitioned into salsa, everyone around me was scared at the beginning — but I wasn’t,” she says. “It was just a matter of me feeling the difference between downbeat and upbeat clave. So, I went in with my style: bringing soul, R&&, hip-hop to salsa music.”

Considered “La Princesa de la Salsa” — a moniker bestowed upon her by the great Celia Cruz, known as “La Reina of Salsa,” who La India humbly calls her godmother — La India’s powerful vocals drew the attention of stars like Eddie Palmieri, who she met in a studio session and who produced her first salsa album in 1991, and the iconic Tito Puente, with whom she went on to record a Latin jazz album. Then she teamed up with Sergio George for Dicen Que Soy, which won tropical/salsa album of the year by a female artist at the second annual Billboard Latin Music Awards.

“It’s the most innovative album of the 90s. It changed my life,” La India says. “It was huge on radio, and from there on we never looked back.” It’s an album that she also “spiritually dedicated” to Cruz, her idol. “Throughout her years of great music and excellence, she never saw me as a rival. She welcomed me into salsa tropical and said, ‘You’re going to hold your own and you’re the princess of salsa’ – she blessed me with that. In a genre dominated by men she opened doors for me. I look upon her for my strength. I continue to celebrate her, and I know she would be proud of me today.”

Set to be honored with the Pioneer Award at Billboard Latin Women in Music 2024, La India has, across four decades, gifted women with anthems that make them feel powerful, something she doesn’t take for granted.

“I knew that through my singing, I was born to make people feel emotions,” she explains. “When I sing, I don’t just sing to sing. We’re here to do music that will last forever, and I’m proud of that.”

Billboard Latin Women in Music 2024 will air exclusively on Telemundo Sunday (June 9) at 9 p.m. ET, and will also be available on the Telemundo app and on Peacock.

Sorry Ariel, Taylor Swift Revealed Real ‘But Daddy I Love Him’ Inspiration in a 2008 Interview

Taylor Swift is the absolute best when it comes to playing the long game. For the latest proof just look to one of the fan favorites from her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department‘s “But Daddy I Love Him.”

Initially it was assumed that the title was a winking nod to a phrase uttered by Ariel in the 1989 Disney animated classic The Little Mermaid, in which the smitten mermaid gave up her voice to be with Prince Eric. But, as it turns out, the film — which was released in the same year Swift, now 34, was born — was not the inspiration for the song after all.

In a resurfaced Popsugar clip from 2008, Swift described an argument with her father Scott that came after the then-19-year-old singer was apparently dating a man her parents didn’t care for. “This song, I wrote it right after my one epic teenage tantrum that I ever threw in my whole life,” Swift said in the clip. “And I remember screaming something, like, ‘But daddy, I love him!’ And running out and storming into my room and slamming the door and then I sat down on the floor and wrote this song.”

The song she was referencing was “Love Story” from her second studio LP, 2008’s Fearless. On her current European leg of the Eras Tour, “But Daddy” is among the new songs Swift has added to the revamped setlist.

Lorde Appears to Tease Fourth Album in Cryptic Post: ‘Use the Existing Tools Wherever Possible’

Lorde sure seems to be teasing her long-awaited fourth album. But in an Instagram post on Tuesday night (June 4) the 27-year-old singer raised more questions than she answered thanks to a series of cryptic pics and a caption filled with a jumble of indecipherable rune-like images.

“Use the existing tools wherever possible,” Lorde wrote, followed by what looked like a ZapfDingbats spree, including a copyright symbol, three different L figures, the number four in parentheses and a recycling logo. “If the tools do not exist you are spiritually obligated to create them,” she added along with an even longer string of confounding images, with the repeated run of Ls, another 4 and a variety of stars, the number 27 and what appeared to be a Tarot card, the infinity symbol, a shark, a rabbit and an Egyptian figure.

What does it all mean? Lorde didn’t offer any explanation, and the accompanying photos didn’t really help, as they consisted of a pic of her in an all-black outfit staring over a balcony, then spitting off said balcony, holding a pill in her hand with the word “spit” imprinted on it, as well as a nightstand featuring a pile of books and an ashtray filled with gold jewelry and a close-up shot of her at a swimming pool. The post is currently the only offering on her Insta account, whose tagline reads, “THE THEMES ARE ALWAYS THE SAME— A RETURN TO INNOCENCE— THE MYSTERIES OF THE BLOOD— AN ITCH FOR THE TRANSCENDENTAL.”

Trending on Billboard

At press time there was no firm information on the follow-up to Lorde’s 2021 Solar Power album. In December, she offered an equally confusing update she posted an image of herself in striped pajamas in which she appeared to be listening to something while staring at the camera with the caption, “listening to myself.”

She teased a couple of new songs during a headlining gig at the Boardmasters Festival in the U.K. last summer, with song sleuths speculating that the tracks might be called “Silver Moon” and “Invisible Ink.” Responding to fans getting hyped up about what seemed like L4 season being right around the corner, Lorde wrote at the time, “We’re not CLOSE close you guys… i’m just getting so hype n needed to let u know .. start ur excitement on a low flame and bring it up to a gentle simmer .. we building stamina for this chapter.”

The singer, who is expert at staying out of the spotlight between albums, opened up in September in an emotional letter to fans in which she revealed that she was “living with heartbreak again.” The note described both emotional and physical pain, explaining, “It’s different but the same. I ache all the time, I forget why and then remember. I’m not trying to hide from the pain, I understand now that pain isn’t something to hide from, that there’s actually great beauty in moving with it. But sometimes I’m sick of being with myself.”

JoJo Announces ‘Over the Influence’ Memoir: ‘Most Challenging Yet Meaningful Project I’ve Taken On’

For her next act JoJo is telling all. The “Leave (Get Out)” singer born Joanna Noëlle Levesque announced on Tuesday (June 4) that she is releasing a “raw” memoir entitled Over the Influence through Hachette Books on Sept. 17.

“Welp. Wow. So… I’ve been working on this like a madwoman in my little emotional cocoon the past 18 months… and it feels surreal to share this with you today: my very first book- a memoir,” the singer wrote on Instagram along with the cover image: a close up of her face. In a typewritten page posted alongside the cover, the singer explained, “this book is for anyone who has ever felt disillusioned, disconnected, but underneath it all DETERMINED to find themselves and a new way of being.”

The note added that she began working on the book a couple of hears ago when she realized the 20th anniversary of her self-titled debut album was coming up this year, at which point she began jotting down a framework for what would become her life story. “This is a story of addiction, generational trauma, fame on a developing brain, lies, love, stamina, spirituality, resilience, and reinvention,” her statement reads. “It’s insight into the evolving music industry over the past two decades and a cautionary tale that I want to be the one to tell.”

Trending on Billboard

She continued, saying that it has been “a trip” to look back and see the “blind spots and patterns and the fear that was the driving force behind many decisions. But also the unbelievable blessings.” She said that her definition of success has gone through a number of revisions since she began her career at age six. Today it is about “happiness and connection. Getting to be a part of things that make me proud and allow me to earn a good living.”

She stressed that she wrote “every single word” of the memoir, and admitted, “I’m nervous. It’s the most challenging yet meaningful project I’ve taken on.”

The singer appeared on shows including Kids Say the Darndest Things, America’s Most Talented Kids and Destination Stardom before getting signed to Blackground Records and Da Family Entertainment and releasing her 2004 debut album, which peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 album chart thanks to debut single, “Leave (Get Out).” Her third album was then repeatedly held up amid a dispute with her record label, leading to her leaving and signing with Atlantic Records in 2014, which released her third LP, Mad Love, in 2016. Over the years she has also guested on a number of TV shows, including American Dreams, Hawaii Five-O and Lethal Weapon.

After releasing her 2021 album Trying Not to Think About It, JoJo made her Broadway debut as Satine in Moulin Rouge! The Musical in 2023.

Hachette describes the memoir as “breathtakingly candid,” saying it “holds nothing back as she brings her against-the-odds story of adversity and triumph to center stage. From being raised by parents who were both battling addiction and depression, to emerging victorious in a never-ending lawsuit with her record label, to putting the fragmented pieces of herself together after a maddening period of rebellion and self-betrayal, she takes the reader through the turbulent years that led her to where she is now: releasing new music under her own imprint, performing in shows and festivals around the world, headlining a Broadway show, and beyond.”

Taylor Swift Wins Songwriter of the Year at 2024 BMI Pop Awards

Taylor Swift took pop songwriter of the year at the 2024 BMI Pop Awards, which were held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. on Tuesday (June 4).

Swift had a hand in writing 10 of BMI’s most-performed songs of 2023 – “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Cruel Summer,” “Karma,” “Lavender Haze,” “Maroon,” “Midnight Rain,” “Snow on the Beach,” “Vigilante Shit” and “You’re on Your Own, Kid.” Swift has received a total of 65 BMI Awards, including the BMI President’s Award in 2009.

On Nov. 10, 2023, Swift received her seventh Grammy nomination for song of the year for “Anti-Hero,” which enabled her to set a new record for the most nods in the category.

Trending on Billboard

Miley Cyrus, Gregory ‘Aldae’ Hein and Michael Pollack won the BMI Pop Award for song of the year for Cyrus’ megahit, “Flowers.” The smash entered the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1 and remained there for eight nonconsecutive weeks. It won Grammys for record of the year and best pop solo performance on Feb. 4 (and was nominated for song of the year).

Sony Music Publishing received publisher of the year for the seventh year in a row. The company represented 34 of the previous year’s most performed songs, including “Anti-Hero,” “Barbie World,” “Eyes Closed,” “Flowers,” “Trustfall” and “Unholy.”

As previously announced, Benny Blanco, 36, received the BMI President’s Award. Blanco has won 55 BMI Awards, was named songwriter of the year four times, and won pop song of the year in 2013 for co-writing “Moves Like Jagger” performed by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera.

Blanco has received two Grammy nods for song of the year, for the Julia Michaels hit “Issues” and the Justin Bieber smash “Love Yourself.” Blanco has gone 0-11 at the Grammys over the years, so this BMI recognition was probably especially meaningful.

Blanco was presented with the award by BMI president and CEO Mike O’Neill, who praised the songwriter as an “unstoppable creative force who has shaped the sound of popular music.” Some of Blanco’s top collaborators, including Lil Dicky, John Janick, Blake Slatkin and Ed Sheeran, sent in video congratulatory messages. Sia then hit the stage to perform Rihanna’s 2012 hit “Diamonds,” which she co-wrote with Blanco.

On receiving the honor, Blanco said, “We have the best job in the world, and we are so thankful and lucky to be in this room. We have the opportunity to make things better through music and help people. We’re giving the soundtrack to peoples’ lives.”

Previous recipients of the BMI President’s Award include Luis Fonsi, Noel Gallagher, Ellie Goulding, Imagine Dragons, Jay Kay of Jamiroquai, Ludacris, P!nk, Willie Nelson, Pitbull, Taylor Swift, Brian Wilson, and Dwight Yoakam.

BMI celebrated 53 first-time Pop Award winners including Sabrina Carpenter (“Nonsense”), Ice Spice (“Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2”), Jelly Roll and Rob Ragosta (“Need a Favor”), Kamille (“I’m Good (Blue)”) and Stephen Sanchez (“Until I Found You”).

The private event was co-hosted by O’Neill and BMI vice president, creative, worldwide, Barbara Cane.

Set to debut in an upcoming campaign for Versace Mercury sneakers, “Afterglow” will be released globally in full this coming Friday, June 9. Like his previous hits on Billboard‘s China TME UNI Chart including 2022’s “Hug Me” and “TITLE” from last year, KUN immersed himself in the creative process for “Afterglow” by utilizing inspirations like patterns and cuts to deliver a blend of dark synthesizers and rock-inspired vocals.

Working as a singer and actor since his teens, KUN has spent the last 10 years showcasing an evolution from a reality TV breakout and boy band member to a full-fledged solo superstar with several albums, overseas tours, and high-profile brand endorsements to his name. Currently, the C-pop star is collaborating with writers and producers in the U.S. to craft a globally focused music project with the upcoming “Afterglow” single release representing what he calls “a brand-new KUN sound.”

Read on for more from KUN on “Afterglow” and its importance in setting up what should be a major 2024 and 2025 with more music, live performances, tours and other treats for fans worldwide.

Congratulations on launching “Afterglow” alongside your global ambassadorship with Versace! Tell us more about it and how you started creating the track?

“Afterglow” is a brand-new single I produced in collaboration with Versace. I approached this song from what I learned in fashion culture — this piece truly reflects my journey as a musician and performing artist. Over the last two years, I have explored and experimented with many different genres, blending old-school with new-school elements, and incorporating my personal taste into modern music. “Afterglow” is born from all this process.

You’re known for being involved in composing your songs. In what ways did you get creatively involved with “Afterglow”?

I draw inspiration from how designers curate their clothing patterns, the sleek cut details and the attention to quality, and translate that into the song. I wanted the synth design to be unique, edgy, and dark while having vocals retaining that rock element. While writing, I imagined scenes of fashion runway — flashing strobe lights — with a more mysterious feel. The runway would be a perfect setting for this sound.

What does “Afterglow” represent for your music career?

Starting from “Afterglow,” we will hear a brand-new KUN sound. We’re starting a new chapter in music, and looking to release more songs in both Chinese and English.

Will “Afterglow” have its own music video too?

Many fans might remember our previous Art Lab live concert. Here’s some exclusive news for my Billboard friends: Art Lab 2.0 is coming soon, including a live performance of “Afterglow.”

How does fashion influence your life day to day?

Fashion always inspires me in the creative process of songwriting. I love vintage clothing just like how I love listening to classic songs, as well as cowboy hats and rough jeans when writing rock songs. Fashion design is a tedious process that involves constant fine-tuning until the final product is developed. That process provokes or intrigues; it has no creative boundary. Very much like when making music, there are endless possibilities.

I read that your Versace news went viral in China with 400 million views on Weibo in under a week and a No. 1 search topic for hours. Were you expecting such an exciting response?

I was in a song camp at that [time]. It was around 3 a.m. so I was actually in bed when my team woke me up and told me the good news. I appreciate everything my fans do for me and we support each other all the way.

You visited the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. on your KUN ONE Tour in 2019. Are there any plans for more overseas shows?

We are planning many surprises this year; more news is coming. I have been in the studio nonstop for an upcoming new project. I am also designing a new music show production that can bring sound to life on a live stage with some talented writers and producers from all over the world.

What else can we expect from you in 2024?

2024 has been my first step into building a label and company that represents the art I love so much. I’ve been aiming at creating and releasing a few global music projects from my label this year and thinking about a global tour, so I’m pushing myself to hit these deadlines. I’ve never released an official global album, and I’m putting in the work to make that a reality. The music is the focus though, so if I don’t feel it’s ready, I may wait until early 2025. I’m enjoying the process of it all.

Any other goals for this year?

Goals… meet my deadlines. [Laughs] And if I meet those deadlines, the next goal is a real one: to make sure the people who listen to the music and experience it live can feel the same way I did when I was creating it. If they tell me that they felt something, I hit my goals for 2024.

Anything else to share with readers or international fans at this time?

I’d love to work with artists from around the world. Collaboration with artists of different cultures is what I love about art, music, and fashion, so for international listeners, message me with ideas, and also message me with cities that you think would want to experience my new projects.

Lady Gaga Shuts Down Pregnancy Rumors With Some Help From a Taylor Swift Lyric

Lady Gaga didn’t waste any time shutting down recent pregnancy rumors, taking to TikTok to post a cheeky response video that includes a Taylor Swift lyrical reference.

“Not pregnant–just down bad cryin at the gym,” reads the message across her latest TikTok, referencing Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department track “Down Bad,” which debuted and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 last month. (The full lyric: “Now I’m down bad crying at the gym/ Everything comes out teenage petulance.”)

Gaga also didn’t miss a high-profile opportunity to urge her Little Monsters to make their voices heard, adding: “Register to vote at www.headcount.org.”

Trending on Billboard

The video itself sees Gaga in a dramatic black-eyeliner look, lip-syncing to a TikTok voice-over that says: “I don’t have to find an aesthetic. I am an aesthetic. I mean I’m sure there’s somebody out here right now who’s going into Pinterest trying to type up all these adjectives to describe me.” The audio was originally posted by TikTok user notpennyproud back in 2021.

The pregnancy rumors cropped up over the weekend, thanks to fans thinking they saw evidence of a baby bump in photos of Gaga attending her sister’s wedding Saturday with partner Michael Polansky.

Late last month, the Gaga Chromatica Ball concert film premiered on HBO and Max and hinted at the pop superstar’s next musical era, with a message reading “LG7 GAGA RETURNS” flashing onscreen at the end. And that won’t be her only major project: Her turn as Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker: Folie à Deux musical sequel — alongside original Joker star Joaquin Phoenix — is set to hit theaters on Oct. 4.

‘American Idol’ Alum Mandisa’s Cause of Death Revealed

Mandisa died of complications from class III obesity, according to an autopsy report obtained by People on Tuesday (June 4). The Grammy-winning American Idol finalist was 47 years old when she was found dead on April 18.

According to the autopsy report, when she was found in her Tennessee home by friends, she “was last known alive approximately three weeks” earlier. The report lists her manner of death as natural.

Trending on Billboard

In April, a representative for Mandisa confirmed her death to Billboard, adding: “We ask for your prayers for her family and close-knit circle of friends during this incredibly difficult time.”

After competing on season 5 of American Idol in 2006 and finishing in ninth place, Mandisa released her first album, True Beauty, the next year, with the project debuting atop Billboard‘s Top Christian Albums chart.

In 2011, Mandisa earned her first No. 1 on Billboard‘s Christian Airplay chart with “Stronger” and earned a top 20 hit on the chart with “Good Morning” featuring TobyMac. But her biggest success came with 2013’s Overcomer, which earned her the Grammy for best contemporary Christian music album and whose title track spent 10 weeks atop Billboard‘s Hot Christian Songs chart.

Mandisa’s Idol peers paid tribute to the late singer last month during the show’s 22nd season, with Melinda Doolittle (season 6), Danny Gokey (season 8) and Colton Dixon (season 11) all returning to the show to perform the song “Shackles (Praise You)” in her honor.

“Not only did our industry lose a really big voice and a powerhouse of a person, but Christian music lost its No. 1 cheerleader,” Dixon said in an interview with Billboard ahead of the tribute’s airing.

On Monday, Illenium announced four dates at the San Francisco venue, July 19-20 and 26-27. A number of fans suspected the artwork for the show poster was created using AI and took to Twitter to roast the dance star. The image features a man, who is supposed to be Illenium, wearing a backward San Francisco Giants hat while standing in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge staring at the city skyline.

Fans were quick to call out the poster, calling it ugly and complaining that Illenium should pay an actual artist for artwork rather than using AI.

Trending on Billboard

Earlier Tuesday (June 4), Illenium copped to the AI allegations, writing on X, “Hey guys, I hear all ur feedback on the sf art. My mgmt worked with (and paid) a designer on a few options. Our team had also created an ai version to help conceptualize. My mgmt ended up using the ai art because they’re stupid and have no taste. However, we still worked with designers to create the final result. We realize now that a few elements were sloppy and missed by us. New artwork incoming.”

Illenium is managed by Ha Hau from Global Dance in Denver. Billboard reached out to Ha for comment but did not receive a response.

A number of fans roasted Illenium for his response, with user @chieflaser writing, “Blaming it on your management like you don’t have the final say? Tough look, while @LikRRaider mocked the fan outcry, writing, “Why are you caving to people on the internet? It’s really not that big of a deal. Pay people for the time they came up with designs, but if you find you like something more then stick to it. People, if you want your art used then you should probably get better at it.”

Fellow dance star John Summit weighed in too, writing in the replies: “the mgmt dunk lmfaoooo if we had it their way flyers would just be date & location w ticket link via notes app.”

Artist presale for all four shows opens Wednesday (June 5) here.
