The track, a blistering diss aimed at the 6 God, has been a juggernaut since its release, skyrocketing to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominating the cultural conversation.

Trending on Billboard

Anticipation for the video reached a fever pitch following K. Dot’s Juneteenth concert at The Forum on June 19, The Pop Out – Ken & Friends, where he performed “Not Like Us” a staggering five times in a row.

The 18-track set also featured guest appearances from Kendrick’s Black Hippy crewmates and his longtime industry mentor Dr. Dre.

Among the images causing the biggest stir is a shot of Kendrick obliterating an owl piñata, a not-so-subtle jab at Drake’s OVO brand.

The photo, cheekily captioned “DISCLAIMER: NO OVHOES WERE HARMED DURING THE MAKING OF THIS VIDEO,” set social media ablaze with excitement over the music video’s contents and the escalating tensions between these two rap titans.

But it’s not all barbs and bravado.

Another snap shared offers a rare glimpse into Kendrick’s personal life, showing the Compton native posing alongside his longtime partner Whitney Alford and their two children. The tender family moment suggests that the video may offer a more multifaceted look at the rapper, balancing its hard-hitting disses with an intimate portrait of the man behind the mic.

Shot on location in Kendrick’s hometown of Compton, Ca., the “Not Like Us” video looks to continue with the authentic, gritty aesthetic that has become synonymous with the rapper’s celebrated body of work.

While the exact release date remains under wraps, one thing is certain: the cultural impact of this video is bound to be seismic.

Leading up to the album’s release, Bryan sent the songs on tour to nearly two dozen bars across the United States and Canada to preview tracks from The Great American Bar Scene early. “My intent with all this is to give everyone an early glimpse of this album, but more importantly, this is in the spirit of bringing people together for a memorable moment,” Bryan said on Instagram. “I have chosen 23 bars across the country that embody the spirit of American culture. These bars will play select cuts from The Great American Bar Scene starting June 24th. As much as I’d kill to play all these timeless bars, it won’t be possible. I will be visiting a few off the list to have a drink with y’all. The Great American Bar Scene will be released on July 4th. With love from the road, ZB.”

The 19-track project includes 18 songs and a poem, led by previously released tracks “Pink Skies” and “Purple Gas.” A double vinyl version of The Great American Bar Scene is also slated to be released on Oct. 10. In addition to prepping new music, Bryan has been headlining his Quittin’ Time tour, which welcomes a slate of openers including Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Turnpike Troubadours and The War & Treaty.

The War and Treaty Feel ‘Betrayed’ After Finding Cotton Plant in Their Music Festival Dressing Room

Though Black artists have made major strides on the recent country music scene — with Beyoncé and Shaboozey launching No. 1 hits and acts like Brittney Spencer and Tanner Adell marking breakthroughs — racism in the genre still exists. For Americana-country husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty, it came last week at the Coca-Cola Sips & Sounds Music Festival in Austin, Texas.

Ahead of their performance, Michael Trotter Jr. tells The Hollywood Reporter, “There was a cotton plant” in their dressing room. “And we all know what that means. We all know what that represents in this country to people that look like us.”

“Anger is what I felt. Disrespect is what I felt. Sadness is what I felt. Sadness not just because of what that plant represents to people that look like me but sadness for myself because I am a son of this country. I served this country honorably in the United States Army 16th Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division. I’m wounded for that service. I’m very vocal about my wounds and my scars, and I felt betrayed,” he explains. “It’s not fair. It’s something that white artists don’t have to worry about at all. … It just happens to come through the bowels of this genre. So, I feel that it’s not enough for us to talk about it, we have to demand that we be about it.”

The Grammy-nominated duo went on to perform on the main stage, though Trotter explains: “When I demanded that we quickly leave this festival and get out of there, Tanya and I had a moment in our hotel room where we wanted to address our son, Legend, who’s 12, and he ended up addressing us. He said that this is not the time to be quiet about it. He was very upset, and he understood exactly what it meant. He’s home schooled, and he knows what that means, and he doesn’t know what it means because Ty and I have sat down and drilled it in his head.”

The War and Treaty released their major-label debut, Lover’s Game, to critical acclaim last year and made history at the 2023 CMA and ACM Awards, becoming the first Black performers to be nominated for duo of the year at both shows. And they launched their first Top 15 hit on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Hey Driver,” their collaboration with streaming juggernaut Zach Bryan.

This year, they earned two Grammy nominations, including best new artist; they performed during the In Memoriam segment at the Emmy Awards; and they will open for The Rolling Stones at SoFi Stadium on July 10 and 13.

Tanya Trotter says their experience in Austin “hits hard when you are a granddaughter of a sharecropper.”

“My grandfather actually bought the plantation that he picked cotton on in New Bern, North Carolina. My family actually still lives there. So when you see these things, you look at it and you’re like, ‘Wow, even though my grandfather bought the plantation, there’s still a lot of pain rooted for people that didn’t get an opportunity to change it into economic development for their families.’ I didn’t want to sit in there and educate because it’s not my position to educate anybody on what cotton is and what it represents in this country. It just shouldn’t happen. Beyond it just being about racism, it’s broader now. It’s now a safety issue because we have to feel safe coming to these festivals,” she says.

She continues, “If we’re going to infiltrate and we’re going to have Black people, Asian people, Hispanic people, then you have to look at it as a safety issue the same way they did when they integrated the school in Arkansas. They had the police there. It has to be safe for people to come to get an education, to be entertained, whatever the case may be. So that’s the position that I take as we are moving into this genre and the spaces broadening not just for us but for everyone. Anybody with melanin in their skin, you have to provide an environment of safety for them.”

A representative for the Sips & Sounds Music Festival didn’t immediately respond to The Hollywood Reporter’s request for comment.

“My skin color is red, white and blue — the flag. I’m an American soldier. That is what this country called upon when it asked me to serve, so I feel betrayed,” Michael says. “Yes, it’s a safety issue, but it is bigger than that. It is a humane problem. It is humanity, and I was put in a position where I felt I had to protect my wife, and my son, and my daughter, and my band members at all costs, which would mean I got to go into war mode in my own country.”

Sauce Walka Blacks Out Over ‘Hard Knock Life’ Beat in New Freestyle: Watch

Houston’s very own Sauce Walka appeared on Los Angeles radio’s Power 106 with Justin Credible and did what he does best: rap his a— off.

All he did was give us game and display some elite wordplay with lines like, “We been shootin’ choppers, changin’ lives before Obamacare” and “I’ll slap a n—a left ear, his eyes separate /How you buyin’ sections, yo’ kids still livin’ Section 8” and “H—e, n—a, pull off Rolls Royce bumpin’ GloRilla.”

There are honestly too many quotables to point out, but pay attention during the second half of the freestyle where he channels the ghost of Hulk Hogan and finishes every line with “brother” like Kendrick on “Family Ties.” There’s just something special about how he sounds over an East Coast beat, especially something as classic as Jay-Z‘s “Hard Knock Life.”

According to The Alchemist, the album is done and “is so good.”

That was two years ago.

The Houston rapper was recently in the news for turning down an Adam22 interview because the No Jumper host tried to lure him with a pint of lean and a bag of weed. Sauce Walka decided to talk with Adam’s associate Sharp instead and crashed an interview Adam was conducting with Wack 100 to send him a message.

“I just want to let the entire world know Sauce Walka stood on the business and showed I ain’t a dope fiend, I’m a Black king and if you want to get me on your platform, it has to be earned,” Sauce said with conviction.

Karol G’s ‘Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido’ Debuts at No. 2 on Hot Latin Songs

Karol G achieves her 27th top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart as “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido” debuts at No. 2 on the July 6-dated list. The song, released June 21 via Bichota/Interscope/ICLG, launches in the upper region three months after “Contigo,” with Tiesto, finished its four-week run in the top 10.

“Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido” starts at No. 2 with activity across all metrics integrated into Hot Latin Songs (airplay, streams and sales). In the July 21-27 tracking week, the song recorded 11.9 million official U.S. streams, according to Luminate. Thanks to that sum, the song opens at No. 33 on the overall Streaming Songs chart and an No. 2 on Latin Streaming Songs.

Trending on Billboard

For the remaining metrics that contribute to Hot Latin Songs, song sales and radio airplay, “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido” sold 2,000 downloads in the same period for a second week atop Latin Digital Song Sales. Plus, it starts at No. 29 on the overall Latin Airplay chart with 4.1 million audience impressions.

With “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido’s” No. 2 entrance, Karol G claims her 27th top 10, and 10th unaccompanied by another artist. Her first top 10 unaccompanied by another act was the No. 5-peaking “Ay, Diso Mío” in 2020. Of her 27 top 10s, eight reached No. 1. Her most recent leader was “Qlona,” with Peso Pluma, for five weeks in 2023.

Notably, Karol and Gloria Estefan remain the only two women to debut in the top two on Hot Latin Songs with titles unaccompanied by another artist. Karol has debuted in the top two with three solo, unaccompanied songs (“Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido,” “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” and “Provenza”) and Estefan did it with “Hotel Nacional” in 2012.

Beyond Karol’s No. 2 debut on Hot Latin Songs, the merengue-based track places Karol back on the top 10 on Tropical Airplay after almost eight years, where “Conocido” rallies 18-3 in its third week. Her first and last visit to the top 10 arrived through “Casi Nada” in 2016.

Further, “Si Antes” grants Karol her 31st career entry on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, with a No. 34 start.

Chet Hanks Condemns Hate Groups Using His Song ‘White Boy Summer’ for Racist Propaganda

Chet Hanks is setting the record straight about his song “White Boy Summer,” which has reportedly seen a surge in far-right extremist groups using it to promote racist propaganda in recent months.

Three years after the musician — who is the son of Oscar-winner Tom Hanks and actress Rita Wilson — released his rap track, the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism published findings that neo-Nazi organizations such as the Proud Boys, White Lives Matter and more have been using “White Boy Summer” to “spread propaganda, recruit new members, and facilitate targeted hate campaigns including acts of vandalism and hate incidents” over the past couple of months. On the song, Chet raps, “Rude boy, it’s a white boy summer, bad gyal, white don dada,” mimicking a Jamaican accent.

In response to the report, Chet has taken to Instagram to firmly and concisely distance himself from anyone using his music to promote racism. “White boy summer was created to be fun, playful, and a celebration of fly white boys who love beautiful queens of every race,” he wrote Wednesday (July 3), one day after the research was published. “Anything else that it has been twisted into to support any kind of hate or bigotry against any group of people is deplorable and I condemn it.”

Trending on Billboard

“I hope that we all can spread love to each other and treat each other with kindness and dignity,” he added.

GPAHE has now updated its article with Chet’s statement, but cautions: “The fact remains that [the song] has been co-opted by far-right extremists to promote hate and bigotry. This underscores the profound social responsibility … for those with powerful platforms to remain vigilant against irresponsible statements that can be used for tools of hate and division.”

Though extremist interpretations of the song seem to have reached a new high this year, Chet’s latest post isn’t the first time he’s felt the need to clarify his intentions behind “White Boy Summer.” “I’m not talking about Trump, NASCAR-type white,” he said in a video posted a couple weeks before the track dropped. “I’m talking about, you know, me, Jon B, Jack Harlow-type white boy summer.”

That didn’t hate groups from co-opting the song in the months that followed its release, however, according to similar reports from around that time.

The GPAHE’s report and Chet’s response come a couple months after the latter made headlines for a much lighter reason; in May, his famous father texted him to ask for an explanation of Drake’s incendiary rap battle with Kendrick Lamar, screenshots of which the younger Hanks posted online. “Holy cow!” the Forrest Gump star texted his son after Chet filled him in. “These are fighting words. People taking sides?? Who’s winning??”

50 Cent Can’t Believe Today’s Ice Cream Truck Prices: ‘What Happened to $1.25?’

Inflation has left holes in everyone’s pockets, and even multimillionaires like 50 Cent are feeling the effects.

The G-Unit mogul posted a photo of the truck’s menu, featuring various character ice cream treats like Spider-Man and SpongeBob as well as strawberry shortcakes and flavorful ice pops ranging from $4 to $5.

“I remember when they was 50 Cent,” a fan quipped in his comments section, while another offered up a solution. “Might as well buy the whole box at the store.”

It’s unclear if 50 Cent ended up purchasing an ice cream, or perhaps the petty “Candy Shop” rapper bailed on the transaction altogether out of spite.

Back in 2022, 50 basked in the nostalgia of hearing the ice cream truck’s jingle in his Queens neighborhood but how horrible it felt when he had no money to buy anything.

“I will never forget the excitement of the ice cream truck is coming growing up, but when there was no money that was the worst s–t,” he wrote to X with a photo of a Mister Softee truck.

INI’s “LOUD” reaches the top of the Billboard Japan Hot 100 on the chart released July 3.

“LOUD” is the lead track from the 11-member boyband’s sixth single, THE FRAME. Powered by sales and downloads, it becomes the group’s third single to reach the top of the Japan Hot 100. Creepy Nuts’ “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” slips to No. 3. Despite the drop in the rankings, the track’s total points have gone up, with streaming, radio airplay and video views all increasing slightly. The track is in the top 5 for all metrics of the chart this week, with the exception of radio airplay.

Debuting at No. 4 is NCT WISH’s “Songbird”, the title track of their second single. 103,340 copies sold puts it at No. 3 for CD sales, surpassing the sales of their debut single “WISH.”  Meanwhile, the song peaks at No. 4 for radio airplay, starting with the same overall rank as their previous single.

Da-iCE’s “I wonder” climbs 11-8, marking the song’s first top 10 since debuting at No. 68 on the Japan Hot 100 dated May 1. Notably, the song not only increased its rankings, but also its points in all indicators except radio airplay, partly due to the buzz around their appearance on “THE FIRST TAKE.”

Additionally, songs by NewJeans, who held their first solo concert in Japan at the Tokyo Dome on June 26 and 27, are rising across the board. Mainly due to an increase in streaming, “Supernatural” rises 8-7 and “How Sweet” climbs 29-24, while “OMG” and “ETA”, both released last year, have returned to the chart again.

‘The Bear’ Roars Back With Bumps for Eddie Vedder, Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead & More

For those who have spent the last year fretting over whether or not Carmy ever got out of that damn freezer, good news: The Bear has finally returned for its third season. The much-anticipated new 10-episode drop from one of TV’s most acclaimed dramedies arrived last Wednesday night (June 26) – and according to its home streaming service Hulu, it’s scored the show’s best opening viewership yet, with 5.4 million views over its first four days of release. And as in the first two seasons, the show comes replete with a variety of memorable needle drops, which have led to big streaming gains this week – particularly for a number of esteemed ‘90s alt-rock veterans.

Trending on Billboard

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder is leading the way with the biggest Bear tune, albeit for a brand-new song. “Save It for Later,” his solo cover of the English Beat’s 1982 new wave staple, debuted along with the new season on Wednesday, and saw its official on-demand US streams nearly double from Thursday to Friday (39,000 to 73,000, according to Luminate) – as more people caught up with the season, in which it appears multiple times (though most prominently at the outset of episode two, “Next”). It totaled a combined 234,000 streams from Thursday to Sunday, while the Beat original (also featured in the Bear season) saw a notable bump as well, up 37% in streams over Friday to Sunday (116,000 total) from the same period the week before. (The English Beat version is also No. 1 on Billboard’s LyricFind U.S. chart after the release of Vedder’s cover – up 3,668% in lyric searches since the premiere.)

Nine Inch Nails also had several songs featured throughout the season, and the most notable – the instrumental “Together,” featured prominently in the season premiere “Tomorrow” – was up a staggering 1,477% in streams over that Friday to Sunday period, rising to 35,000 from just over 2,000 in the previous week’s equivalent period. Similar gains were seen over the same timeframe for featured songs by Radiohead (“(Nice Dream),” up 42% to 58,000) and Refused (recurring Bear staple “New Noise,” up 31% to 46,000). And it wasn’t just the ‘90s greats: Big Thief frontwoman Adrianne Lenker represented for the younger generation with a bump for her “No Machine,” which rose 73% to to 33,000. – ANDREW UNTERBERGER

Dominic Fike’s ‘Misses’ Hits on TikTok & Streaming

“14 minutes of music that almost didn’t see the light of day”: that’s how Dominic Fike described 14 Minutes, a new EP that quickly followed last year’s Sunburn album, upon its May release. With a track list of eight self-produced songs that clock in between one and three minutes in length, 14 Minutes was unveiled as an odds-and-ends project for fans — but then one of its shortest tracks, the 74-second “Misses,” started to go viral, and is now logging seven-figure weekly streams.

While the jaunty soul-rock track has been used in TikTok posts by Kylie Jenner and The Kid LAROI in recent weeks, Fike has incorporated the song into his sets at festivals like Bonnaroo and Governors Ball. As a result, “Misses” spent all of June steadily growing on streaming services — earning 4.41 million official on-demand U.S. streams during the chart week ending June 27, according to Luminate, after earning 2.35 million streams during the week ending June 6, a nearly 88% spike in three weeks’ time. Fike earned his first Billboard Hot 100 entry as a lead artist last year with “Mona Lisa,” which peaked at No. 89; if “Misses” keeps growing, the track could become an unlikely follow-up hit. – JASON LIPSHUTZ

Thank God It’s Rihanna: New GloRilla Single Blows Up After Pop Legend’s Viral Video

It’s already been a hell of a 2024 for Memphis rapper GloRilla, who’s scored a pair of top 40 Hot 100 hits with “Yeah Glo!” and the Megan Thee Stallion teamup “Wanna Be.” Glo’s new single “TGIF” hasn’t quite joined them in that region yet – the weekend-celebrating anthem debuted at No. 46 on the Hot 100 last week. But it’s probably going to get there very shortly, after getting an instantly unforgettable co-sign from someone as familiar with the top of the chart as any artist this century: Rihanna.

On June 28, Rih shared a video of herself rapping along and dropping it low to the song, all in the face of her significant other A$AP Rocky – who observed her performance with his hands on his hips like a disapproving schoolteacher, before commenting “I’m too old for this” at video’s end (as Rihanna cackled in response). The couple’s delightful clip, captioned “happy friday,” caused the song to immediately explode: “TGIF” racked up nearly 4.5 million official on-demand U.S. streams combined over the following Saturday and Sunday after notching just 2.4 million the previous weekend (according to Luminate), a 74% gain. Good to know that while we’re waiting for her impossibly long-anticipated R9 album, Rihanna is still bringing new smash hits to the people, one way or the other. – AU

Could the Celine Dion Documentary Help a Former ‘AGT’ Contestant Become a Star?

Last month, I Am: Celine Dion, a documentary capturing the life and career of the titular pop superstar (as well as her ongoing battle with stiff-person syndrome) enjoyed a limited theatrical run, before debuting on Amazon Prime Video. Its June 25 streaming bow allowed millions of viewers to marvel at Dion’s personal and professional achievements — as well as get introduced to “Who I Am,” an uplifting piano ballad from singer-songwriter Wyn Starks, which is showcased as an inspiring anthem in the doc.

Starks, a Minneapolis native, originally released “Who I Am” in 2020 and performed the song while competing on America’s Got Talent in 2022, the song’s emotion moving judge Sofia Vergara to tears. Now signed to Curb Records, Starks has landed another high-profile platform for “Who I Am,” and it’s paying off: the song earned 101,000 official on-demand U.S. streams from June 28-30, according to Luminate, after earning just a fraction of that (14,000 streams) during the same three-day period the previous week. Starks released a new single, “Run,” earlier this year, but the success of the documentary may have the singer-songwriter and his team pivoting back to another round of promo for “Who I Am.” – JL
