Nickelback’s ‘How You Remind Me’ Leads Band’s Chart Return After Documentary Release

Nickelback’s catalog sports sizable gains following the June 16 U.S. Netflix premiere of the band’s career-spanning documentary, Hate to Love: Nickelback, with one of its signature songs ruling a Billboard chart dated July 13.

“How You Remind Me,” the group’s breakthrough 2001 hit, bounds in at No. 1 on the Hot Hard Rock Songs tally, as well as No. 12 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs. (Older songs are eligible to rank on Billboard’s multimetric charts if placing in the top half and with a meaningful reason for their re-entries.)

In the tracking week ending July 4, “How You Remind Me” earned 5.1 million official U.S. streams, up 12%, and sold 2,000 downloads, up 171%, according to Luminate.

The song makes its first appearance on Hot Hard Rock Songs, which began in 2020, and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, which started in 2009. “How You Remind Me” was released on Nickelback’s third studio album, Silver Side Up, and became its to-date only No. 1 on the all-format Billboard Hot 100, ruling for four weeks in 2001-02.

While “How You Remind Me” is the only song from Nickelback’s catalog to reach the newest multimetric Billboard charts, the band’s music dots other surveys. “Rockstar,” from 2005’s All the Right Reasons, crowns Hard Rock Digital Song Sales (2,000 sold), where it’s followed by “How You Remind Me” at No. 2; “Photograph,” also from All the Right Reasons, at No. 4; “Someday,” from 2003’s The Long Road, at No. 8; and “Savin’ Me,” likewise from All the Right Reasons, at No. 9.

“How You Remind Me” also leads a pair of Nickelback tracks on Hard Rock Streaming Songs, lifting 4-3 as the survey’s Greatest Gainer. “Rockstar” follows as a re-entry at No. 23 via 3.1 million streams.

On the Top Hard Rock Albums tally, The Best of Nickelback: Volume 1, released in 2013, rises 3-2 thanks to 18,000 equivalent album units earned, a 30% jump. The 19-song compilation features each of the aforementioned tracks.

In all, Nickelback’s catalog received 28 million official on-demand U.S. streams in the week ending July 4, up 22% from 22.9 million in the week ending June 27.

Hate to Love: Nickelback premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023 prior to its Netflix arrival.

The four-piece’s most recent album, Get Rollin’, was released in November 2022 and debuted at its No. 2 high on the Top Hard Rock Albums survey. It has earned 149,000 equivalent album units to date and spawned a No. 2-peaking Mainstream Rock Airplay hit in “San Quentin.”

Anthony boasts five Tropical Airplay No. 1s in the 2020s, after landing 13 in the ‘10s, seven in the ‘00s and 12 in the 1990s. He first led with “Te Conozco Bien” beginning in June 1995 and had most recently reigned with “Punta Cana” this February. Anthony also holds the record for the most total weeks atop Tropical Airplay, across all his No. 1s: 181.

The new chart coronation lands after Telemundo identified “Ale Ale” as an official summer anthem to live across its platforms and as the official song of the network’s UEFA Euro 2024 coverage.

“Ale Ale,” an anthem that celebrates Latin pride, is from Anthony’s latest album, Muévense, which reached a No. 4 high on Tropical Albums in May, giving the superstar his 15th top 10 on the chart.

KCON L.A. Festival Featuring ZICO, NCT 127 & More to Broadcast Live on The CW Network

KCON is once again coming to Los Angeles, but fans won’t necessarily have to be anywhere near the City of Angels to experience performances from ZICO, NCT 127 and more K-pop stars.

On Thursday (July 11), the music festival announced that its main stage showcases will air live on The CW Network July 18, starting at 8 p.m. In addition to the “Any Song” singer and “Kick It” boy band, I-LAND 2, STAYC and ZEROBASEONE are also slated to take to the M Countdown performance area that day.

“This historic event marks the first time a K-pop performance show will be broadcast live in primetime on national television in the United States, a testament to the genre’s explosive global growth and the unwavering dedication of its fans,” reads a release.

Though only its final day will be broadcasted, the three-day event will kick off July 26 at the LA Convention Center, Gilbert Lindsay Plaza and Crypto.com Arena. The lineup also features BIBI, BOYNEXTDOOR, INI, ENHYPEN, god and JO YURI in addition to several other K-pop artists spread out across four different stages.

JEON SOMI and K-drama actors Rowoon and Kim Soo Hyun will also be on hand to host live tapings of M Countdown, the weekly live performance program on the K-pop music channel Mnet, at the festival.

The latest iteration of KCON comes over a decade after the event launched in L.A. in 2012. Since then, it’s expanded to New York, Tokyo, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi — as well as Germany, come September — allowing fans across the world to interact with South Korean music, food and culture.

Both one-day passes and full-festival tickets are available for purchase on KCON’s website.

Ranking Every Cash Cobain ‘Not My Problem (Remix)’ Snippet

Cash Cobain is up to his old antics again.

The Bronx rapper and producer has been known to post snippets of songs he’s making on social media. Sometimes he releases the finished product, sometimes he doesn’t. So there’s no telling if he will ever officially drop his remix of Laila!’s viral “Not My Problem” song. But that doesn’t matter because a bunch of artists have already recorded verses to his remix. Laila! went viral when she performed “Not My Problem” and “Like That” on On the Radar. The latter of which went viral on TikTok spawning a dance meme thanks to a fan with the username madozilla.

Memes aside, I was happy to finally put a face to the “Like That” song. I’ve seen people posting that dance all over the place and was always curious about who made the song. Sometimes you have to do some digging, because people manipulate these songs and you never realize that they might have a rap verse or two until you go look for yourself. And not only does Laila! rap and sing, she makes all of her own beats.

These “Not My Problem” remixes remind me of dancehall, where you would have a bunch of different artists who take a riddim and add their own flavor to it, sometimes making something completely different. Dancehall producer Lenky’s Diwali Riddim comes to mind, with Wayne Wonder, Lumidee and Sean Paul each making popular songs using the same beat in 2003.

My sources tell me Cash is thinking about either making a mega mix, like a Slizzy “We Are the World,” or he may continue posting the snippets as he gets them.

Slizzyfeed — the social media account for all things Cash Cobain — compiled a list of the snippets that have surfaced, so far, so I ranked them. I’ll see about updating the list if more artists decide to ride this wave. We need Laila! and Ice Spice to add some verses, too. Let’s keep this party going.

Nacho Reflects on The Rebirth of Chyno y Nacho Amid Chyno’s Health Recovery

Chyno y Nacho has become one of Latin music’s most emblematic duos, achieving various No. 1 Billboard hits, four Billboard Latin Music Awards and a Latin Grammy win, while releasing six studio albums.

Now, after parting ways in 2017 and a serious health condition that affected the mobility of one of the members, the duo composed of Jesus “Chyno” Miranda and Miguel Ignacio “Nacho” Mendoza is making a comeback, with a five-date U.S. tour called Eternos. The duo officially launch its new era with new single “Tu Nombre,” which they will perform at the 2024 Heat Latin Music Awards taking place on Thursday (July 11) in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic.

“We are happy with the opportunities that life gives us to start over, and to appreciate the second chances,” Mendoza tells Billboard. “Today, we feel stronger than ever, and we feel that there are no challenges that we cannot measure ourselves against.”

The highly awaited return comes in the midst of Miranda’s arduous health recovery.

In 2020, the Venezuelan singer was diagnosed with COVID-19, and as a result suffered peripheral neuropathy, encephalitis, and other long-term COVID symptoms that affected his nervous system. Miranda had to learn to walk again and battled depression, among other collateral health complications.

The “Niña Bonita” singer was moved to Venezuela for his recovery, where for almost all of 2022 he was admitted to the Tía Panchita rehabilitation center. Since entering the rehab facility, all of Miranda’s loved ones, including Nacho, lost touch with the artist. Nacho describes not having access to his bandmate as a mystery, because for many months they were unsure of Miranda’s health condition.

“Many people in Venezuela who had the resources went behind the case and made it possible to remove him from the center he was in,” he recalls. “From that point on, we [Chyno y Nacho] have not been separated.”

Nacho admits that Miranda is still recovering — but thanks to music, he’s been able to heal and improve, and is capable of going on tour. Chyno y Nacho is set to make a comeback with its Eternos Tour set to kick off September 28 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. The duo will also visit Puerto Rico, Houston, New York, and Orlando.

Below, read Nacho’s Q&A with Billboard.

What does the Chyno y Nacho comeback at Heat Latin Music Awards signify?

My heart feels like taking advantage of the time — because time goes by very quickly. You don’t realize how the years go by, how what you do affects the lives of others. Only time tells you, and today we realize that we have left a beautiful legacy and touched the hearts of millions of people around the world, and that there are many young people who were inspired by our careers and efforts. Thanks to that, they have an example of being able to develop their own careers, and that makes us feel very good.

You guys will be performing your new single at the awards show. What can you share about “Tu Nombre”?

This song is like a warm-up for the return. It came out as a soft release, but we trust our fan base and we know that people are always looking for new things from Chyno and Nacho, and that the discovery of new things begins. It has a fairly fresh sound, and it defines a lot of the essence of Chyno and Nacho but in 2024. We feel the energy when we are on stage, we see the people’s reaction to the song. Seriously, the feedback has been great — and we hope that this performance [at Premios Heat] serves as a window, so that people not only find out about the union and the tour, but also that they know that we are here to make new content.

Chyno y Nacho made a brief return in 2021 with the album Chino & Nacho Is Back, but then stopped making music. Why is 2024 the adequate time for the tour and comeback?

In 2021, just when we released the album, my partner’s health complications began to worsen and [music plans] was something that we had to abandon. There were people who connected with songs from the album, but in reality, all the attention was focused on the development of my partner’s illness. We abandoned the musical theme a little, and it was as if we couldn’t do anything because the intention was to unite and show our new projects.

I think the issue of the pandemic also crossed our intentions. But hey, God knows what his plans are, and at work we simply accepted what the result was. Those three years were years of personal struggle for each one. But you know that kings are made in the desert, and after having that resistance and walking through those personal deserts, today we feel more strengthened than ever — and we feel that there are no challenges that we cannot measure ourselves against.

It’s been a very challenging road for Chyno, but I can imagine that as his duo partner, it’s been difficult for you as well. How has this entire process been for you?

[We see] the opportunity that God gave us to recognize and value a friendship that is still valid. We had our downfalls as friends, our disagreements, but I believe that the courage of human beings is not in maintaining the best attitude all the time, but in recognizing how you can get back into the best vibes and tunes, and also recognize your blessings.

I believe that those 10 years that we lasted as a duo, plus the previous years that we were in other groups, are worth a lot. I have shared more with Chyno than with my own blood brothers. Having entered into those discussions, it was simply a process for us to be able to understand how strong our friendship was, and how much we should value the gift that God gave us both of being able to have a prosperous career and being able to gather experiences together that are unforgettable .

I see it as the opportunity for both of us to see how we can improve everything we have … Each one [of us] had their personal process, but I think his was much more difficult, because he went through certain situations that I went through — such as divorce, for example — but he also has a health issue. I feel that his strength has been more noticeable, and the battles he has had to fight have been stronger. If I have the opportunity to be able to accompany him in those battles and carry on my shoulder some of those weights that he has to carry, with all my pleasure, at this moment I have all the disposition in the world to do it.

When did you realize that Chyno was ready to continue with his music career and go on tour?

I think it was circumstantial, because I was one of those friends and family who couldn’t find his whereabouts. We didn’t know where he was, where they had him hidden. It was difficult. It is a process that today I can tell you, we are together and living a new reality, but our fans don’t know the entire trajectory of us being able to be with him again, and being able to tell him, “Look, we are going to continue doing what is really going to bring you back — which is music, and what you are really passionate about.”

From that point on, we have not been separated. Music is the best medicine, because the evolution that he has [gone through] has been demonstrated in the last months. Now, he’s ready to go on tour, for example. A couple of years ago it didn’t even cross our minds, based on his condition.

In addition to Eternos Tour, what does the future look like for Chyno y Nacho, in terms of new projects?

The new album is a possibility — it is very feasible to do it in the future. For now, we are releasing “Tu Nombre,” because he still has certain current commitments with his recording label that he has to fulfill individually. When we decided to go our separate ways, we approached new contracts as individuals, and he is still going through that process of being able to deliver what he has as part of his musical debt.

We have to see what the permit issue is like — I don’t think his record company will disagree with us continuing to do things together. I think it is the best alternative at this moment for his musical career, his development, and his improvement.

Eminem Returns to Alternative Airplay Chart After 21 Years With ‘Houdini’

Eminem’s “Houdini” achieves a feat that no single from the rapper had in over 20 years: make Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.

The song bows at No. 35 on the ranking dated July 13, marking Eminem’s fifth appearance on the survey and first since “Lose Yourself,” which peaked at No. 14 in December 2002.

“Lose Yourself” logged an 18-week run on the chart, through February 2003. As such, the break between Eminem’s Alternative Airplay hits numbered 21 years and five months. That’s the longest between appearances since Kate Bush went over 28 years between January 1994 (“Rubberband Girl”) and June 2022 (“Running Up That Hill [A Deal With God]”), the latter charting after the 1985 classic’s synch in Netflix’s Stranger Things.

Eminem’s respite is the third-longest in Alternative Airplay’s nearly 36-year history, behind only Bush’s and Debbie Harry’s; the latter waited almost 29 years between “Kiss It Better” in 1990 and her featured turn on Just Loud’s “Soul Train” in 2018.

Eminem’s Alternative Airplay history extends before “Lose Yourself,” though it’s his highest peaking entry on the tally. He first reached the list with “My Name Is” in 1999 (No. 37), followed by “The Real Slim Shady” (No. 19, 2000) and “Without Me” (No. 15, 2002).

Trending on Billboard

“Houdini” has been described as evocative of many of those earlier Eminem singles, which is not lost on Kevin Weatherly, Audacy senior vp of programming and program director of KROQ Los Angeles. “This Eminem song has an instant familiarity, and it resonates with a large segment of our audience that was there when he arrived 20-plus years ago,” he tells Billboard. “Much like when we played him in the past, the response is mostly positive, but there are also some negatives. That said, we recognized the pop-culture moment and wanted to reflect it and be a part of it.”

KROQ played “Houdini” 21 times in the latest tracking week (July 28-July 4), sixth-most among stations on the Alternative Airplay panel, according to Mediabase.

KTCL Denver spun the song 29 times in that span, the fourth-most on the panel in that stretch; KKDO Sacramento led all stations with 38 plays. “One of my Jocks, B-Large, brought it to our music meeting for discussion,” KTCL program director Jeb “Nerf” Freedman tells Billboard. “We play four Eminem songs in catalog, so it makes sense to take a listen to the new song – but not every artist has a comeback this late in their career. Lucky for us, we constantly engage our audience with online surveys. When we tested it and it went through the roof, we knew they didn’t think of Eminem as just a part of history. Slim Shady is alive and well!

“It sounds a little weird hearing that Steve Miller melody on our station, but it certainly jumps out of the speaker at you. So far, it’s a massive hit.”

The Miller melody Freedman references is that of “Abracadabra,” the 1982 hit from The Steve Miller Band that topped the Billboard Hot 100; “Houdini” interpolates the song’s melody in its chorus.

Concurrently, “Houdini” lifts to a new No. 29 high on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart via 1.2 million audience impressions, up 21%, according to Luminate. Upon its debut in late June, it became Eminem’s first song on the list, which began in 2009.

“Houdini” boasts multi-format approval; in addition to its Alternative Airplay rank, it has so far reached No. 8 on Rhythmic Airplay, No. 16 on Pop Airplay, No. 18 on hot-rap-tracks and No. 32 on Adult Pop Airplay.

The track launched at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts dated June 15, as well as No. 2 on the all-format Billboard Hot 100. It holds at No. 16 on the latter list’s latest edition via 20.9 million radio audience impressions, 15.7 million official U.S. streams and 6,000 downloads sold.

“Houdini” is the lead single from The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace), Eminem’s 12th studio album, due Friday, July 12. One other song was released ahead of the album: “Tobey,” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron, which bows at No. 95 on the Hot 100.

The Zombies’ Rod Argent Suffers Stroke, Announces Immediate Retirement From Touring

Rod Argent has suffered a stroke, leading to his immediate retirement from touring. The 79-year-old Zombies keyboardist is currently recovering at home after an overnight hospital stay, with doctors advising several months of rest and recuperation.

The news came in the form of a release from the band’s managers Chris Tuthill and Cindy da Silva Thursday (July 11), which notes that the group’s founding member had spent a weekend in London with his wife Cathy to celebrate their 52nd wedding anniversary as well as his birthday before his hospitalization. All upcoming performances on The Zombies’ schedule have now been canceled, including the band’s two festival shows in the U.K. slated for later this month. A fall 2024 U.S. tour had also been in the works prior to his stroke.

“He was already preparing to wind down his live performance schedule after health scares on recent tours,” the announcement read. “However, the stroke was an unmistakable warning sign that the risks are too great.”

Trending on Billboard

Though he will no longer be performing with the English rock trailblazers, Argent plans to continue writing and recording with bandmates Tom Toomey, Søren Koch, Colin Blunstone and Steve Rodford. According to Tuthill and da Silva, he’s “already been back at his piano for some much-needed “’Bach therapy.’”

Plus, The Zombies’ second annual Begin Here Festival in St Albans U.K. will continue as planned in November, although their performance will be replaced with a special show honoring Argent. At this time, the band’s team asks that fans sit tight with their tickets until they’ve “had time to regroup and announce new plans.”

Argent’s retirement from touring ends quite a run, with The Zombies getting their start in the early ’60s. He’d previously stepped away from the group in 1975 in order to focus on his family and being a songwriter, but agreed to temporarily fill in for a few shows in 1999 — something that turned into 25 more years of touring and recording with the band. The group has had two albums chart on the Billboard 200 — 1965’s self-titled release and 1969’s Odessey & Oracle — as well as five Billboard Hot 100 hits over the course of its career.

“Our last message is that if a classic artist that has made music you love is performing nearby, don’t miss the opportunity to see them,” Tuthill and da Silva’s message concludes. “You can sit on the couch and binge Netflix another day. The communal experience of a live performance by a veteran artist is a singular and joyous moment. These artists are treasures who have stood the test of time and are giving their all, but they are fragile human beings like all of us.”

Eminem Calls ‘The Death of Slim Shady’ a ‘Conceptual Album,’ Implores Fans to Listen in Order

Eminem has revealed that his The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce) is a “conceptual album,” which appears to be the first of his Hall of Fame career.

With his 12th studio album set to arrive on Friday (July 12), the “Without Me” rapper gave fans a warning and some insight into his project that’s mere hours away.

Slim Shady took to X on Thursday (July 11), where he explained that he’s delivering a concept album, so the tracklist’s sequencing is intentional, meaning listeners should press play it listen to TDOSS in the order he decided to fully understand Em’s vision, and not skip around.

“Public service announcement: the ‘death of slim shady’ is a conceptual album, therefore, if you listen to songs out of order they might not make sense,” he wrote. “Enjoy.”

Trending on Billboard

While streaming can lead to listeners playing whichever songs they choose, fans flooded his replies, willing to oblige: “We will listen in order boss!”

There was also plenty of debate about Eminem’s last concept album or if he has one at all. The consensus seemed to be that he doesn’t have a true “conceptual album” all the way through, but 2009’s Relapse would qualify as the closest thing to it.

However, There’s been numerous occasions where his tracks have been connected conceptually in the past, like on Revival with “Castle” and “Arose.”

The Death of Slim Shady appears to revolve around killing off his signature alter ego. The project boasts 19 tracks, but features remain unknown.

Em kicked off the rollout of TDOSS with “Houdini,” which landed at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 for his highest charting entry of the decade. He followed-up with “Tobey” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron, which debuted at No. 95 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Here’s How Much Travis Kelce Says Taylor Swift’s Super Bowl Suite Cost

Taylor Swift was one of the most newsworthy parts of the 2024 Super Bowl — outside of the actual game, of course. But according to Travis Kelce, it cost quite a pretty penny for her and her friends to be there.

In a clip from the new Netflix documentary Receiver, which premiered Wednesday (July 10), the 34-year-old Kansas City Chiefs tight end seemingly revealed the jaw-dropping price tag of the private suites at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas while conversing with the San Francisco 49ers’ George Kittle ahead of the big game. When Kittle tells Kelce that he “can’t” swing a suite, the latter asks, “Why, ’cause they’re f–king 3 million dollars?”

“I didn’t know if you guys were teaming up with other players or something,” the New Heights host added, appearing to shake his head at the high cost.

Trending on Billboard

The episode was filmed before the Super Bowl, which ended with the Chiefs winning their second Lombardi trophy in a row. Kelce’s superstar girlfriend watched the game from one of the aforementioned suites alongside the athlete’s family and a list of friends that included Ice Spice, Lana Del Rey and Blake Lively.

Though there’s no telling how Kelce and the “Anti-Hero” singer may have split the bill, Swift almost definitely could’ve covered the cost on her own — it was first reported that the pop star had reached billionaire status in October 2023, six months after which Forbes confirmed the estimation.

Since the Super Bowl, Kelce has enjoyed much of his off-season by spending time with Swift on her global Eras Tour, which will next set up shop in Milan for two shows at San Siro July 13-14. His appearances on the trek may soon become fewer and farther between, though, as the Chiefs gear up for training camp this month.

Alfredo Olivas Talks ‘Imaginación,’ His Norteño-Country Style, Collaborations & More

Five months after releasing the first single from what will be his next album, Mexican singer-songwriter Alfredo Olivas offers another preview with “Imaginación,” a norteño song with country elements that follows the same line of his “Asignatura Pendiente” released in February.

“That sound that has worked for us and that people like a lot is something that already distinguishes Alfredo Olivas’ music — and this song could not be the exception,” the artist tells Billboard Español. Announced as the focus track of his new LP, due out soon on Fonovisa/Universal Music, “Imaginación” debuts Thursday (July 11) at 8 p.m. ET and will be available here.

A little more than a decade into his career, Olivas has been consolidating himself as one of the most important singer-songwriters of the regional Mexican music scene. The artist from Sonora, Mexico has a resumé full of accomplishments, ranging from pioneering the corridos alterados, which predate the corridos tumbados and bélicos, to a score of Billboard‘s Regional Mexican Airplay chart entries, including three No. 1s: “El Problema,” “Yo Todo Lo Doy” and “No.”

Trending on Billboard

In 2023, the 30-year-old singer became the highest-grossing artist in Mexico, with 71 sold-out dates in palenques, arenas and, for the first time, stadiums for a solo artist. He recently renewed his contract with Fonovisa Records-Universal Music, the company that has seen him grow professionally.

“Huge legends of Mexican music have been lost in recent years,” says Antonio Silva, managing director of Fonovisa-Disa U.S. & Mexico. “Who among the new phenomena of popularity will go on to establish themselves in far-reaching careers that will generate a legacy? It is clear to me that Alfredo Olivas will achieve that transcendence. In my perception, he has everything it takes: author of all his hits, unique lyrics and a way of performing that has forged his unique style.”

This year, Alfredo Olivas has embarked on a spectacular tour with banda-norteño star Julión Álvarez, Los Prófugos del Anexo, and for the first time in his career he recorded a duet with Alejandro Fernández, “Cobijas Ajenas,” which toppedBillboard‘s Latin Airplay chart, giving Olivas his first overall Latin radio chart leader.

Below, Olivas talks to Billboard Español about this achievement and his big current career moment.

Your lyrics are generally about heartbreak — how do you get inspired if you are in a stable relationship?

It is enough to observe what happens to many people. I express that in my style, and fortunately I have connected with my audience.

In 2023 you were the artist with the most dates in the most important venues in Mexico, including stadiums. What did this mean to you?

It was a great satisfaction, because one dreams of those moments. At the same time, it is a commitment. I have fought hard to get to this point, so I have to take great care of the quality of what I give to the public. I always dreamed of seeing myself on stage like the most important artists. I love to see what’s new in terms of production. Sometimes we have to spend a lot of money — but it doesn’t matter if it’s so that regional Mexican music can be more colorful and of higher quality, and the world can see it that way.

Are you worried about the image of regional Mexican music in the world?

Completely. Sometimes it is annoying that we are wrongly labeled; there is a lot of talent and quality. In my case, I like to have everything in order, the sequences, the setlist — but without losing the essence of our genre, which is the mischievousness and improvisation.

You are a pioneer of a generation that fueled corridos around a decade ago. What do you think of the new stars?

I think it’s very good that there are so many talents. From my point of view, it is a positive thing that they are joining the cause. These new breakthroughs are a positive thing to continue the fight that began many years ago. When Grupo Firme began to break protocols, we could see a new positive era coming for everyone.

You don’t record collaborations often — how did the duet “Cobijas Ajenas” with Alejandro Fernández come about? Did you already know each other?

Of course, there has always been a lot of admiration on my part. Two or three years ago, I had the opportunity to meet him — and although it was my dream that he would record one of my songs, I never told him, I don’t like to force things. Time went by, and now through the record label (Universal Music), they proposed it to me and of course I said yes. The song is by maestro Espinoza Paz.

How did the idea of touring with Julión Álvarez come up if you are both so successful as solo artists?

There is a very special connection, and it shows on stage — we are great friends. He recorded one of my songs, “Sin Memoria,” and made it a big hit. People like us as a duo, the proof is that we have seven sold out shows so far in 2024.

You recently renewed your contract with Universal Music/Fonovisa Records, what makes you continue working with the company after a decade?

It’s just like a marriage relationship — like keeping promises to each other, setting goals and reaching them, loving and respecting each other. I think it is very healthy to leave certain things in the hands of experts, as in this case, the record label. In this way, the artist is dedicated to focus on making music.

Los Tigres del Norte have said that you are one of the young artists they respect because you preserve the traditional style of regional Mexican music. Would you also collaborate with them?

It would blow my mind — I am the first to raise my hand. If they would consider me it would be a tremendous achievement. And now that you mention it, of course we are going to look for that opportunity.

Last year you recorded for the first time a song that you didn’t write, “Ni Con Labios Prestados,” and it was a big hit on streaming platforms. Why did you decide to do it?

The songwriter Aarón “El Pantera” Martínez is one of those who I admire the most — and the truth is that we didn’t know each other personally, only on Instagram. But he knew, as a good poet, to write me with the right words. I listened to it, and from the first moment I liked it. To this day it is one of the most requested songs in my show.

Have you thought about recording more songs by other composers?

It happened with “Ni Con Labios Prestados,” and now with Alejandro Fernández. But I’m not going to lie to you, I have set goals for myself, and one of them is to have my own catalog. I deeply admire Joan Sebastian, Juan Gabriel and Marco Antonio Solís, they are my example to follow as singer-songwriters.
