Jamaican singer Cocoa Tea, whose celebrated career blurred the divide between roots reggae’s righteous convictions and dancehall’s feel-good ethos, passed away on March 11 at age 65 in a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Cocoa Tea’s wife, Malvia Scott, speaking to Jamaican newspaper The Gleaner, said the cause of his death was cardiac arrest, which followed his diagnosis of lymphoma in 2019 and a recent six-month battle with pneumonia.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Cocoa Tea released a plethora of popular songs, characterized by his pristine, honey-toned vocals and the timelessness of his lyrics, which alternated between romantic, religious and reality themes. Decades after these songs were released, Cocoa Tea remained an in-demand act on reggae festivals throughout the U.S., Europe and the Caribbean. Cocoa Tea’s final performance was aboard Damian Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock Reggae Cruise in 2022. “We were honored to have Cocoa Tea perform on the Welcome to Jamrock Cruise more than once; he was one of reggae’s sweetest voices and always left the audience smiling. Cocoa Tea was an original, top class, whether on stage or on record; he will truly be missed, but his music will live on forever,” Dan Dalton, Damian Marley’s manager and co-founder of the Welcome to Jamrock cruise, told Billboard.
Born Colvin George Scott in the rural fishing village of Rocky Point, Clarendon, Jamaica, he released his first single, “Searching in the Hills,” in 1974. When that single stalled, he trained to become a racehorse jockey, and later worked as a fisherman, while honing his vocal craft on local sound systems. In 1983 he met Henry “Junjo” Lawes, who produced his initial hits “Rocking Dolly” and “I Lost My Sonia.”
Cocoa Tea’s exquisite tenor effortlessly conveyed romantic musings (“Love Me Truly,” “She Loves Me Now”) and as a Rastafarian, he also delivered stirring spiritual convictions (“Holy Mount Zion,” “Israel’s King”) and uncompromising commentaries: “Oil Ting,” which opposed the first Gulf War, was banned from radio in Jamaica and the U.K., and his 1997 single “New Immigration Law” sounds like a statement on the current political climate in the U.S.
His songs have been sampled by artists ranging from 2Pac to Joss Stone to The 1975. His 2008 song honoring the first Black president of the United States, “Barack Obama,” released on his own Roaring Lion imprint, garnered international attention; in recent interviews Cocoa Tea expressed disappointment in Obama’s unwillingness to pardon Jamaica-born pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey.
Although short in stature, Cocoa Tea was a musical giant with a remarkable ability to adapt to dancehall/reggae’s shifting soundscapes while retaining his distinctive musical identity. Here are 10 crucial Cocoa Tea cuts.

Kicking things off is Chappell Roan, who stepped into her Missouri roots with her country leaning track, “The Giver.” The Grammy-winning superstar announced the single earlier this month via Instagram, sharing a photo of herself dressed up in construction gear. “I have such a special place in my heart for country music,” she wrote. “I grew up listening to it every morning and afternoon on my school bus and had it swirling around me at bon fires, grocery stores and karaoke bars.” The song marks Roan’s first release since her hit, “Good Luck, Babe!,” which she dropped in April last year.
Haim also made their grand return with their breezy, summer-ready single “Relationships.” Haim’s last studio album, Women in Music Pt. III, was released in 2020. It reached No. 13 on the Billboard 200 and received a Grammy nomination for album of the year.

Gearing up for the album, Shelton follows his current Billboard Country Airplay top 15 hit “Texas” with the new song release, “Let Him In Anyway,” which offers the spiritual-minded tale of someone pleading for divine forgiveness for a friend who never fully went all-in on redemption.
“‘Let Him In Anyway’ is one of the most powerful songs I’ve ever had the chance to record,” Shelton said in a statement. “Hardy is a co-writer and a friend, and I’ve never heard a song like this before. When I first listened to it, I knew it was something special. It’s an honor to bring it to life, and I’m incredibly proud of the record we made.”

Calvin Harris, “Smoke the Pain Away”
Calvin Harris walks down the dirt road into country music with “Smoke the Pain Away,” an acoustic guitar and harmonica-heavy ode to trying to numb heartbreak with a hodgepodge of controlled substances. When the Scottish hitmaker teased the track earlier this month, it was unclear if or how any electronic elements would be incorporated, but while the song is still a departure for Harris, it does contain dance DNA with a flickery, high BPM beat that adds extra verve and bounce and helps the song ride the line between the two genres.
Featuring Harris’ own plaintive vocals, the song is another pretty undeniable earworm from one of dance’s foremost hitmakers. It also comes days after the announcement that Harris will play the first ever double residency at Ushuaïa in Ibiza, where he’ll perform on both Tuesdays and Fridays this summer. In keeping with the country theme. this mega-club is not too far from the sprawling farm Harris has on the island. “
Sub Focus & bbyclose, “On & On”
It’s a big week for Sub Focus fans, the with U.K. heavyweight releasing his first new single of the year with “On & On,” which extends his reputation as an essential master of drum and bass. The hypnotic song features a long mid-track bridge built largely around vocals from bbyclose, with the song altogether adding fuel to a run that’s included Sub Focus’ 2024 John Summit collab “Go Back.” Following his sold out show at London’s Alexandra Palace last week, he announced this week that he’s bringing this same Circular Sound setup — which features him playing from the center of a halo of lights — to New York and Los Angeles this fall.
Cassian, Script & Belladonna, “Where I’m From”
It’s not a surprising that Cassian got not one but two slots opening for Anyma’s Sphere residency, given that Australian producer and mixing engineer’s sound sound falls squarely into the grandly-sized melodic techno style preferred by Anyma and many of the artists surrounding him. “Where I’m From” is a prime specimen of the genre, with Cassian and his co-producers Script and Belladonna weaving together an urgent production, with stuttering vocals and ominous choral singing, into a straight-up banger that’s right out of an action movie.
Myd, “The Wizard”
French producer Myd returns with a pair of new tracks, “Song for You” and “The Wizard,” with the latter being a warm, propulsive and very soulful fusion of disco and tribal house that just feels good on the ears. Out via Ed Banger Records and Because Music, the singles follow Myd’s slot DJ-ing the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris and also comes after a marathon week-long Twitch stream from the producer’s house in that same city, a segment of which you can see here.
DJ E-Clyps, “Gitit”
The always reliable DJ E-Clyps returns with his fifth single of the year, “Gitit.” The track balances a cool, bouncy, nearly future house production with E-Clyps’ own vocals, a ode to being in the club and appreciating the kind of woman with “pretty super eyes and those super juicy thighs” — lyrics he delivers in a laid-back staccato. “Gitit” is out on Blacklight Factory, the label E-Clyps founded in partnership with Empire Dance and launched last month.
Catz ‘n Dogz & Nala, “Dance”
The Polish duo return with the noisy, kind of giddily abrasive electro-punk track “Dance” a call to arms for dancefloor self expression. “We wanted to create a track that could be played when you’re angry, or just if you need to release that pressure valve. Something with pure energy” says the duo’s Greg Demiañczuk. This one is just that, with its strident vocals courtesy of Miami-based artist Nala, a regular Catz & Dogs collaborator who’s also opening for John Summit tomorrow (March 15) at Billboard Presents THE STAGE at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

According to a release, the long-awaited doc is an “emotive journey through Iron Maiden’s 50 Year history told from the perspective of both the band and some of their most devoted followers – from longstanding superfans to established names from the worlds of film and music such as Javier Bardem, Lars Ulrich and Gene Simmons.”
In addition, the doc is slated to feature exclusive interviews with key band members and the final interview with original vocalist, Paul Di’Anno, who died in October 2024 at 66 from a tear in the sac around his heart. In addition to rare archival footage of the group, the doc will also include all-new animated sequences with Maiden’s fan-favorite ghoulish grin zombie mascot Eddie, who has appeared on all their album covers.

“We’re proud Universal Pictures Content Group has chosen to share the unique story of Iron Maiden with the world,” said Maiden manager Rod Smallwood in a statement about the film that will be directed by Malcolm Venville (Churchill At War). “We have given them unrestricted access to the band, our fans and musical peers. We trust that they will excite not only music fans but also anyone who loves a story of an underdog beating the odds to become and remain one of Britain’s biggest musical exports since our first record released 45 years ago.”
The movie description continues, “The film offers a unique visual experience that highlights Iron Maiden’s widespread impact and the strong connection between the band and their truly global army of fans. The film also explores the cultural movement Iron Maiden has helped shape and their enduring legacy in both music and fan culture, challenging common perceptions of the wider significance of rock music and heavy metal.”
Iron Maiden formed in East London in 1975 and helped spearhead a resurgent wave of British metal on their way to selling more than 100 million records worldwide thanks to such hard-charging hit singles as “Run to the Hills,” “The Number of the Beast,” “Aces High,” “Flight of Icarus,” “The Trooper” and “Hallowed Be Thy Name.”
“We’re thrilled Iron Maiden have entrusted us to bring their legacy to cinemas around the world,” said Universal Pictures Content group executive vice president Helen Parker. “Working closely with the band and their passionate fans has been an unrivalled experience allowing us to tell their story in a unique way and celebrate their incomparable fearless creativity in their 50th anniversary year.” The film will be produced by Dominic Freeman (Spirits in the Forest – a Depeche Mode Film), with Parker serving as executive producer.
Iron Maiden will launch their 50th anniversary Run For Your Lives tour in Budapest on May 27, with 32 other dates currently scheduled throughout Europe through August 2.

While fans are savoring Playboi Carti’s long-awaited release, MUSIC, one artist isn’t necessarily too fond of the new album. On Friday morning (March 14), Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) shared his thoughts on Kendrick Lamar’s heavy involvement on Carti’s 30-track effort.
“I DON’T LIKE KENDRICK LAMARS MUSIC,” an exacerbated Ye posted on X. “HE RAPS VERY GOOD BUT I DIDNT NEED TO HEAR HIM ON CARTI ALBUM.”
Billboard reached out to Playboi Carti and Kendrick Lamar’s reps for comment.
Ye’s targeted post of Lamar comes a month after he said that the Compton rapper was the only one who could beat him in a rap battle. “If you rap against Kendrick, you will lose,” Ye said during his interview with Justin LaBoy on The Download. “This man does this. You know, in Street Fighter, you get Chun-Li, you get a certain kick, and no matter what, you can’t beat that thing?”
Continued Ye, who has faced ongoing backlash for his hate speech: “If you rap against Kendrick Lamar, like Joe Budden said, ‘Never rap against Kendrick Lamar.’ If you rap against Kendrick Lamar, it’s a difficult task, but perhaps it’s something … I’m a psycho genius, so you know, it could be.”
Carti’s colossal release includes three Lamar appearances. The newly formed tandem teamed up on “Good Credit,” “Mojo Jojo” and the Ye-produced song “Backdoor.” For Carti, MUSIC marks his return after a five-year layoff after his seminal 2020 album Whole Lotta Red debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, with 100,000 equivalent album units, marking his first-ever chart-topper.
Aside from K. Dot’s trio of assists, MUSIC features a stacked lineup of hip-hop heavyweights including Future, Travis Scott, The Weeknd, Lil Uzi Vert and more. Fans experienced delays after a promised midnight release from the self-proclaimed King Vamp. After missing out on the initial 12 a.m. ET drop, Cardi vowed the album would come out at 3 a.m. ET, but it arrived closer to 4.
For Carti, MUSIC, is shaping up to be a well-timed release. He’ll quickly get the ball rolling with his headlining performance at Rolling Loud California this weekend. Shortly after, Carti will embark on a stadium tour with The Weeknd, where he’ll serve as his opener.
Gene Simmons can rock n’ roll all night and deliver the weather forecast the next day. On Thursday (March 13), the KISS frontman hilariously took over Los Angeles meteorologist Adam Krueger’s weekend report on Fox 11 — and it was truly chaotic from start to finish.
Wearing a denim shirt, sunglasses and a black cap, Simmons began by asserting he knows “quite a lot” about weather. He also landed a backhanded compliment toward Krueger — “You look much better in real life than you do on TV” — before pointing out regions on a map of Southern California and nonchalantly reading off the weather patterns crossing through.
At one point, Simmons pushed Krueger away so as not to block the graphics behind them before reading out the warm temperatures local viewers would experience over the next few days. Krueger then went in for a play on KISS’ Billboard Hot 100 hit “Rock and Roll All Nite,” saying, “This weekend, I’m thinking, it’s looking pretty good. If people want to rock and roll all night …?”

“They should party every day,” Simmons finished.
Another hilarious moment came when Krueger tried to signify the end of the segment by giving the rock star a fist bump, prompting Simmons to ask, “Are you kicking me out?”
“You don’t have the thing in my ear where they’re saying wrap, so I gotta wrap,” Krueger responded, leading Simmons to start freestyling some bars.
“Rap? ‘You go to 7-Eleven/ Go to heaven …,” Simmons spit, doing a little dance.
After the broadcast, Krueger shared some behind the scenes photos with the rock legend on Instagram and wrote, “Do weather with @genesimmons” along with a checkmark emoji.
Krueger is known for creating viral weather moments by incorporating popular music into his presentations. Last year, he turned heads by using lyrics from Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” while delivering a Houston forecast, telling viewers, “If you wanna pass on this heat like John Stockton, you can go into the Northwest where there’s 60s and 70s for highs today.”
“So again, we got temperatures in the 90s, but it’s going to feel hotter for several days … Wop, wop, wop, wop!” he continued at the time. “This is not a major cold front. In fact, the general rule this time of year if it’s June and we’re talking about a cold front, it’s probably a minor.”
Krueger’s has also recently paid homage to Doechii, Tyler, the Creator and Travis Scott.
Simmons has also previously tried his hand at meteorology. In September, he joined KTLA 5 Morning News and hilariously pushed resident weatherman Henry DiCarlo aside to take over that week’s weather report.
