Tyla, Rema, Amaarae & Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 Are Performing at Coachella 2025: Here Are the African Acts Who’ve Played the Festival Before

As artists and fans from across the globe are flocking to the desert for this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, African music is set to make its biggest splash yet.

South Africa’s Tyla, Nigeria’s Rema and Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 and Ghana’s Amaarae will take over the festival this weekend and next. Tyla was originally slated to perform at Coachella last year but an injury forced her to drop out. “It’s difficult because I want to go. It’s the moment that I’ve been waiting for,” she told Billboard in her cover story last March. “It’s not an easy decision, but it’s the right decision.” Seun Kuti, the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and leader of his father’s former band Egypt 80, made history as the first Nigerian act to perform at Coachella in 2012.

With this year marking Kuti and Beninese DJ AMÉMÉ’s second festival appearances, they join Burna Boy and Black Coffee as the only African acts to perform at Coachella multiple times, with the former taking over the main stage twice and the latter commanding three different stages in four different years.

Some of the biggest superstars from the continent have yet to take the stage on their own. Wizkid was included in the 2018 lineup but was “unable to make it into the country to join us,” Coachella wrote on X during weekend one; in a since-deleted X post, Wiz wrote that his “band had some visa issues.” But last year, he and Justin Bieber came out during Tems‘ set to perform their Billboard Hot 100 No. 9 summer anthem “Essence.”

Outside of Wiz, guest appearances during other stars’ sets have given African artists more opportunities to shine in the desert. When Doja Cat headlined the 2024 edition of the festival, she performed “Acknowledge Me” and “Shutcho” from her 2023 album Scarlet alongside The Joy, an a cappella group from her South African motherland. The five-member group incorporated Zulu lyrics in the latter track. Also last year, Fireboy DML appeared as a surprise guest during Spinall’s set to deliver a reimagined version of their “Sere” hit and during Jon Batiste‘s set to deliver the live debut of their collaboration “Drink Water.” And in 2022, CKay performed his global smash “Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ah)” during Pink Sweat$‘s set, as the R&B singer/songwriter/producer backed him up on the drums.

Billboard rounded up 13 acts from the African continent who’ve performed at Coachella before, in alphabetical order.

Soft Palms Returns With New Single ‘Radio’: Watch the Music Video

Duo Soft Palms has returned with new single “Radio” from their upcoming sophomore album. The track marks the first new music from the wife and husband pair of Julia Kugel (The Coathangers, Julia Julia) and Scott Montoya (former member of The Growlers) since their debut self-titled album in 2020.

“Radio” kicks off with Montoya on the drums before Kugel joins in a boisterous guitar riff that drives the track. The song is about the divisive nature of media and the alienation that results from the echo chamber of negativity, hearing secondhand information and the perception of persecution.

The track’s release is accompanied by a music video featuring the duo in night vision and serves as a reflection of the lyrics’ sentiment with surveillance cameras and projected messages that reflect the idea of being watched and judged.

The Southern California couple have been making music together and separately for decades, and have decided to take their careers to what Montoya calls the “next logical step” of attempting to win a Grammy.

“Julia and I have over 40 years combined experience in music. ‘Radio’ will be our combined 352nd track on our combined 46th release, but it’s the first time we’ve ever thought to submit our work to the Recording Academy for Grammy consideration,” Montoya tells Billboard. Coming from the independent side of the music industry, he explains, the Grammys have “a stigma of being specifically for pop artists and for mainstream music, but it’s really not the case.”

The duo has also spent years strengthening their local music scene through their free annual festival, Happy Sundays, in Long Beach, Calif. The three-day event is scheduled to return this summer to several locations in the city between Aug. 23-25.

They also run non-profit Studios for Schools that provides equipment and funding for building recording/production studios in schools.

“Radio” was recorded and mixed by Kugel and Montoya at their home studio Centre of Mental Arts (COMA) in Long Beach, Calif., and mastered by BAFTA winner Mick Boggis. The entirety of the record is expected out later this year via Everloving Records.

Mariah Carey Might Release a ‘Few Songs’ From Her Secret Grunge Album

Mariah Carey fans have been waiting for the moment the chanteuse will unveil Someone’s Ugly Daughter, the alt-rock LP she worked on with her band in 1995 while simultaneously recording her album Daydream. Now that the superstar is nominated for a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, it seems fitting for her grunge album to see the light of day.

“I mean, I really want to [release it], but I want to do videos, and I have just so many ideas for that,” she told Associated Press in a new interview. “I don’t think I’ll be able to pull it together by the summer (before the Rock Hall ceremony) but maybe, maybe I’ll release a few songs from it.”

As for her Rock Hall nomination, she gushed, “That’s a huge honor. I don’t know if I’m going to win it, so I don’t want to get too excited about it. So, I just want to say that, again, it’s a huge honor and I guess I didn’t expect it. I wasn’t really thinking about it. And here we are.”

The Grammy-winning singer detailed in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, that she and her band wrote and recorded Someone’s Ugly Daughter to blow off steam while working on Daydream. She initially wanted to drop it as it was, but ended up releasing it under the pseudonym Chick with her friend Clarissa Dane on lead vocals.

Carey later confirmed to Rolling Stone Music Now in 2020 that she’d uncovered the original version of the record with her voice at the forefront. “I think this unearthed version will become something that, yes, we should hear,” she said at the time. “But also, I’m working on a version of something where there’ll be another artist working on this with me as well … Possibly something built around the album. I’m just full of surprises.”

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s The Class of 2025 will be revealed in late April, and the induction ceremony will take place in Los Angeles this fall, with more details to be announced in the coming months.

Kendrick Lamar & SZA Get Introspective in ‘Luther’ Music Video: Watch

Kendrick Lamar and SZA have dropped off the official music video for their Billboard-chart topper “Luther,” just days before launching their highly anticipated Grand National Tour.

The minimalistic video debuted on Friday (April 11). Directed by Karena Evans — who notably helmed Drake’s videos for “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What” and “In My Feelings” — the new visual finds SZA and K-Dot in deep moments of introspection as the song soundtracks the experience. The video then closes out with the original recording of Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn’s “If This World Were Mine” cover, which is sampled throughout the song.

The new visual accompaniment comes as the song’s hot streak continues on the Billboard Hot 100. The track currently sits at No. 1 for its seventh consecutive week, holding strong even as K-Dot’s arch rival, Drake, challenges the spot with his single “Nokia.” The latter currently sits at No. 3.

The GNX standout is getting fans even more excited for SZA and K-Dot’s upcoming Grand National Tour. The sprawling North American and European trek will include 39 shows, starting with Minneapolis, Minn., on April 19. The tour will wrap on Aug. 9 in Stockholm, Sweden. Notable stops include MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., on May 8 and 9, and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., on May 24.

DJ Mustard will also serve as the opening act throughout the tour. This will be the second time Mustard and K-Dot will share the stage together, coming off Lamar’s memorable Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show in February, which featured a cameo from the producer.

The documentary delves into the nuanced relationship between The Judds matriarch Naomi Judd and her daughters Ashley and Wynonna. According to an announcement regarding the Alexandra Dean-directed and executive-produced documentary, the series seeks to explore “the complex mother-daughter dynamics and intergenerational trauma as seen through the eyes of the Judd family.”

Naomi and Wynonna Judd formed the successful mother-daughter country music duo The Judds, garnering 14 No. 1s on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart in 1980s. Meanwhile, Ashley Judd went on to become a successful actress, known for roles including Double Jeopardy and Heat.

The trailer for the documentary shows Naomi and Wynonna together in the early days of The Judds’ career. Naomi smiles at Wynonna and says, “You love me?” as Wynonna nods. “Are you ever going to leave me?” Naomi asks, as Wynonna grins and shakes her head no.

“I was so proud of their success,” Ashley Judd later says in the trailer, which also features comments from The Judds’ fellow country star Reba McEntire. From there, the trailer quickly shifts, alluding to family secrets and struggles, with Ashley saying of Naomi at one point, “She had no idea what I went through as a child.”

Later Wynonna says, “It’s a blessing and a curse to be that close to your mother.”

The Judds led headlining tours and notched hits including “Love Can Build a Bridge” and “Why Not Me.” They won five Grammy Awards and nine CMA Awards during their career, before Naomi’s battle with hepatitis C brought the duo’s career to a halt. Wynonna then forged a successful solo career on the strength of songs including “No One Else on Earth” and “Tell Me Why.”

In April 2022, tragedy struck when Naomi died by suicide at age 76, one day prior to The Judds’ induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. At the time, a statement from Wynonna and Ashley Judd said, “Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness. We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”

The documentary series is produced by Propagate Content for Lifetime, with Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, Isabel San Vargas and Jonathan Schaerf acting as executive producers. Elaine Frontain Bryant and Brad Abramson are executive producers for Lifetime.

“I can feel my heart racing, it’s so hard to keep cool/ Am I being too patient?/ Too hot, got me sweatin’ on the floor,” they began, as their sensual body rolls pushed the scream-meter past 11. By the time they got to the Motown-meets-Pharrell falsetto chorus — “Loose/ I’ve been waiting to get next to you/ I can tell how bad you want it too” — each pop, lock and hip thrust was met with increasingly hoarse-sounding yelps.

The performance glided to a close with all seven men reclining on one elbow on the stage before popping up for a last run of perfectly synched choreo and a final straight line pose to soak up the adulation.

JENNIE of BLACKPINK & Peggy Gou Team Up for Knockout Remix of ‘Like JENNIE’: Listen

Who wanna rock with JENNIE? Peggy Gou does. On Friday (April 11), the BLACKPINK star and South Korean-born DJ dropped an amped-up remix of the former’s Ruby hit “like JENNIE,” along with a new visualizer rendering the duo as players in a boxing video game.

On her remix, Gou stayed true to the chest-puffing confidence of JENNIE’s original track while revving up the percussion and dance elements of the song with her own special touches. “Keep your hair done, nails done like JENNIE/ Who else got ’em obsessed like JENNIE?” the Idol star raps on the fast-paced song. “I think I really like JENNIE/ Haters, they don’t really like JENNIE/ ‘Cause they could never ever be JENNIE.”

Trending on Billboard

Animated by Jack Zhang, the anime-inspired visualizer matches the self-assured energy of “like JENNIE” by portraying the K-pop phenom and Gou as ring-ready fighters, throwing punches with red gloves on to the beat of the song.

The new remix arrives just over a month after JENNIE dropped her debut solo album, Ruby, which entered the Billboard 200 at No. 7. “Like JENNIE” quickly became one of the standout hits from the set, reaching No. 83 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the star’s highest peak with a song featuring no collaborators so far. On March 7 — the same day Ruby arrived — JENNIE shared a space-themed, choreography-filled music video for “like JENNIE.”

The album also features collaborations with Doechii, Dua Lipa, Dominic Fike, Childish Gambino and Kali Uchis. JENNIE was sure to thank both the Swamp Princess and the “Telepatia” singer at the 2025 Billboard Women in Music Awards in March during her Global Force acceptance speech, as Doechii was in the room to accept Woman of the Year in the night, while Uchis was the one who presented JENNIE with her award.

“I’m so lucky and fortunate to work with so many talented people in my career — singers, songwriters, producers,” the “Mantra” musician said at the time. “Doechii, I love you, and Kali, I love you. I had these amazing women be on my album, and words cannot express how thankful I am.”
