How to Vote for the 2022 American Music Awards

You’ve probably heard that the American Music Awards are voted on entirely by fans, unlike the Grammy Awards, which are voted on strictly by members of the Recording Academy.

But how exactly do you vote in the AMAs, if you are so inclined?

Nominations for the 2022 AMAs were announced on Thursday (Oct. 13). Fan voting is now open in all but one of this year’s 37 categories. Voting in that category, favorite K-pop artist, will open on Nov. 1.

Let’s answer some questions you may have about voting and, while we’re at it, a few general questions about the AMAs.

How can you vote?

There are two methods for AMAs fan voting – web voting and Twitter voting. To vote via the web, head to VoteAMAs.com.

To vote via Twitter, you must include the following in a tweet from a public Twitter account:

Artist Categories: Artist name, award category name and #AMAs

Song Categories: Song title, award category name and #AMAs

Album Categories: Album title, award category name and #AMAs

An example of a valid Twitter vote would be: I’m voting for Toni Braxton for artist of the year at the #AMAs!

Toni Braxton is nominated for artist of the year?!

No. I just didn’t think it would be right to use a current nominee as an example. Gotta keep this scrupulously fair.

Okay, now I’m curious. Who is nominated for artist of the year?

Adele, Bad Bunny, Beyoncé, Drake, Harry Styles, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd.

That sounds about right.

Agreed, though Kendrick Lamar, Future, Lizzo, BTS and Ed Sheeran might think differently. There are always people who just miss the cut, even with an expanded seven slots. There were only five nominees in each of the last five years.

Any other rules I should know about?

Retweets of valid votes also count as a vote. You may only cast a vote for one category and one nominee per tweet.

How many times may you vote per day?

Up to 22 times per day, per category, per voting method.

So, this show really measures fan enthusiasm. The artist with the most hard-core fans is probably going to win.

That’s pretty much it.

When does voting close for award categories other than favorite K-pop artist?

Monday, Nov. 14, at 11:59:59 p.m. PT.

Since voting is just now opening up, how were the nominations determined?

Nominees are based on key fan interactions – as reflected on the Billboard charts – including streaming, album and song sales, radio airplay, and tour grosses. These measurements are tracked by Billboard and its data partner Luminate, and cover the eligibility period of Sept. 24, 2021, through Sept. 22, 2022 (representing Billboard chart dates of Oct. 9, 2021, through Oct. 1, 2022).

The AMAs added or revived six categories this year – favorite K-pop artist, favorite Afrobeats artist, favorite rock song, favorite rock album, favorite touring artist and favorite soundtrack. This is a breakthrough for K-pop and Afrobeats, which have not previously had AMAs categories dedicated to them.

Did any categories bite the dust?

The AMAs dropped one category this year – favorite trending song, won last year by Megan Thee Stallion’s “Body.”

Is it true that Dick Clark created the show?

It is. The legendary TV producer created the AMAs as a popular alternative to the Grammys. In the first five years of the show, it focused on just three broad genres – pop/rock, soul/R&B and country. The show has expanded its focus as music has become more diverse. But there are still no categories for some more specialized genres that the Grammys include, such as classical and jazz. This is the 50th edition of the AMAs, by the way. The show has aired on ABC continuously since 1974, marking one of the longest continuous network relationships for any awards show.

When will this year’s show air?

The American Music Awards are set to air live from Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. ET and on tape delay at 8 p.m. PT on ABC. A host has not yet been announced. Cardi B hosted last year’s show.

Dan Auerbach-Led The Arcs Prepping First Album in 8 Years, ‘Electronic Chronic’

Black Keys singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach‘s side project, The Arcs, will release their first album in 8 years in early 2023. Electronic Chronic — the follow-up to the band’s 2015 debut, Yours, Dreamily — is due out on Jan. 27 through Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound label.

The band previewed the 12-track album on Thursday (Oct. 13) the the funky first single, “Keep on Dreamin’,” which dropped along with a psychedelic, pinball-themed animated video directed and illustrated by Robert Schober, with character design by El Oms. The collection was produced by Auerbach and bandmate guitarist/keyboardist Leon Michels and it features contributions from late drummer Richard Swift.

In a press release announcing the project, Auerbach said, “whether it was New York city or Nashville or L.A., or Swift’s hometown of Cottage Grove, Oregon, wherever we were, we would always get in the studio together. It was our favorite thing to do. It’s rare that you meet a group of people that you click with like that, who you instantly bond with. We were just having fun, making sounds, making music. It was an amazing time for me.”

Michels added that the band — which also includes bassist Nick Movshon and drummer Homer Steinweiss — laid down between 80 and 100 tracks in what he described as near-constant recording sessions after the release of Dreamily. “It was so so much fun to be in the studio once again, so we were just making music all the time,” he said. “I think there was always a plan to make a follow-up record.”

Auerbach said Chronic is “all about” honoring Swift, who died in July 2018 from complications from hepatitis and liver/kidney distress. “It’s a way for us to say goodbye to him, by revisiting him playing and laughing,” he said. “It was heavy at times, but I think it was really helpful to do it.”

Bad Bunny Leads 2022 American Music Awards Nominations: Full List

Bad Bunny leads the nominations for the 2022 American Music Awards with eight nods, including his first for artist of the year. If the Puerto Rican superstar wins in all eight categories, he would tie Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston for the most AMAs in a single year.

Beyoncé, Drake and Taylor Swift are close behind with six nods each. That makes Bey and Swift the year’s top female nominees. The two powerhouses are facing off in three categories — artist of the year, favorite female pop artist and favorite pop album.

Adele, Harry Styles, The Weeknd and Future each received five nods. Imagine Dragons and Måneskin are tied as the group with the most nods – four. Jack Harlow and Tems also received four nods.

There are seven nominees for artist of the year, up from five nominees in each of the last five years. Swift received her record-extending ninth nomination in the category; Drake, his sixth; The Weeknd, his fifth. Adele, Beyoncé and Styles each received their third – counting Styles’ two previous nods with One Direction. As noted, this was Bad Bunny’s first nod in the category.

Swift holds the record for the most wins in the artist of the year category (six). She also holds the record for most AMA wins overall (34).

With two nods (collaboration of the year and favorite touring artist), Elton John makes history as the longest-recognized artist in AMA history. He was nominated for favorite pop/rock male artist in 1974 at the inaugural American Music Awards. He lost to singer/songwriter Jim Croce, whose death in a September 1973 plane crash triggered a tremendous sales surge.

More than 40 artists received their first-ever nominations this year, including the aforementioned Harlow and Tems (four nods each), Latto (three), Blackpink (one), Anitta (one), and Swedish House Mafia (one).

The nominations announcement kicked off ABC’s Good Morning America with a reveal of the 2022 new artist of the year nominees — Dove Cameron, Gayle, Latto, Måneskin and Steve Lacy. The segment featured a video of two-time AMA winner Becky G surprising this year’s nominees with the news. Additional nominees were announced via the AMAs’ Twitter account.

The AMAs bill themselves as “the world’s largest fan-voted awards show.” They further tout that last year’s show was the most social telecast of 2021 with 46.5 million interactions.

This is the 50th edition of the show, which was created by TV music/variety OG Dick Clark in 1973. The show has aired on ABC continuously since 1974, marking one of the longest continuous network relationships for any awards show.

Queen Release Stirring Lost Track Featuring Freddie Mercury Vocals, ‘Face It Alone’

After teasing the discovery of a previously unheard song featuring vocals from late singer Freddie Mercury earlier this summer, Queen finally unwrapped “Face It Alone” on Thursday (Oct. 13). The dramatic, emotionally affecting song was recorded during the 1988 sessions for the band’s penultimate album with Mercury, 1989’s The Miracle.

Recorded three years before Mercury died at 45 from AIDS-related complications, the wistful track opens with Mercury softly singing, “When something so near and dear to life/ Explodes inside/ You feel your soul is set on fire,” over guitarist Brian May’s banjo-like plucking. By the second verse, Mercury climbs into a more forceful, urgent register with the lines, “When something so deep and so far and wide/ Falls down beside your cries can be heard/ So loud and clear.”

The singer then leans into the melodic, solitary chorus, “You life is your own/ You’re in charge of yourself/ Master of your home/ In the end, in the end/ You have to face it all alone.”

In a BBC Radio 2 interview in June, May and drummer Roger Taylor revealed that they’d discovered the song while working on the massive re-issue of The Miracle. “We did find a little gem from Freddie that we’d kind of forgotten about,” Taylor, 72, told BBC Radio 2 host Zoe Ball in the chat. “And it’s wonderful. Actually, it was a real discovery.”

May said he and Taylor have been considering the release of the song for a while. “It was kind of hiding in plain sight,” May said. “We looked at it many times and thought, ‘Oh no, we can’t really rescue that.’” But they went back again this year and with some help from studio wizards May said they were able to spruce up what he described at the time as a “very passionate piece.”

The song — the first new track featuring Mercury vocals in more than 8 years — is the lead single from the upcoming Nov. 18 re-release of the band’s 13th album, which will be available as the 8-disc Queen The Miracle Collector’s Edition box set. The collection will feature an hour-plus disc of previously unreleased recordings, including six unpublished songs, according to a release announcing the box.

The set will also feature audio of the band’s “candid spoken exchanges on the studio floor in London and Montreaux,” giving a peek into the group’s “creative process and the joy, in-jokes and banter on their return to working together”; it will also reinstate the song “Too Much Love Will Kill You,” which was removed from the original album at the last minute due to publishing issues. Other extras include outtakes, instrumentals, a 76-page hardback book with unseen photos, original handwritten fan-club letters from the band, press reviews, videos and interviews, including the last chat with former bassist John Deacon.

NewJeans Team With Baby Shark & Pinkfong for Cute ‘Ninimo’ Performance Video: Watch

Baby Shark and friends have teamed up with one of the most promising and freshest faces in the K-pop world.

Girl group NewJeans, Baby Shark and Pinkfong shared a new video singing and dancing to a catchy new song “Ninimo.”

The collaboration came from The Pinkfong Company, the Korean educational entertainment company behind the massively popular “Baby Shark Dance” which is the most-watched video on YouTube with more than 11 billion views.

This new video sees NewJeans members Minji, Haerin, Danielle, Hanni, and Hyein rocking their signature baggy jeans and trendy T-shirts alongside the yellow Baby Shark, magenta fox Pinkfong, and other characters.

The first tease of the collab came via a clip that referenced NewJeans’ trending “Attention-Wardrobe” clip that earned 4.3 million views on TikTok while using the group’s Billboard Global 200 hit “Attention.”

The NewJeans collaboration is a part of its ongoing Dance Alive program that brings together Korean stars and Pinkfong’s beloved characters. A previous Dance Alive video with choreographer-dancer AIKI performing Bruno Mars’ “Lazy Song” has more than 425,000 views to date.

“We’re thrilled to announce the collaboration with NewJeans, one of the most notable K-pop rookies, bringing a unique and exclusive opportunity to enjoy the songs and dances for fans around the world,” The Pinkfong Company said in a statement through a press release. “Through the Dance Alive project, we plan to continuously engage with fans of all ages including Millennials and Generation Z by teaming up with the beloved K-pop artists.”

In their first-ever international interview with Billboard, NewJeans shared their ambition to reach fans worldwide. “Because we just debuted recently, we’ve been focusing on promoting and performing in Korea, but I promise you that whenever the opportunity comes, we are going to catch a plane and head over to you all,” Hanni said. “Words can’t explain the amount of joy and gratitude we have for our fans all around the world.”

Months after release, NewJeans still boast two tracks on the Billboard Global 200 with “Hype Boy” at No. 74 and “Attention” at No. 121, both in their ninth week on the chart.

Offset didn’t stop there, though. A video released on Twitter shows him gifting Cardi not just any watch, but a rare Richard Mille watch. The expensive gift comes on the heels of their baby Kulture receiving a 500k Richard Mille watch just months ago, in July.

Cardi celebrated her birthday with a burlesque-themed function hosted at Poppy Nightclub in Los Angeles. The rapper shared an Instagram Story of herself in a rose-red burlesque gown, seemingly captured before taking on her dirty thirty.

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old lost his life in a car accident while driving back to Atlanta from Tennessee on Tuesday (Oct. 12). He reportedly crashed into a tractor-trailer parked on the side of the road, TMZ reported. However, it was local news site Douglas Now that was first to report the news about the crash.

The news was also shared by his fellow Idol alum Katharine McPhee-Foster, who took to her Instagram story on Tuesday (Oct. 11) to share her condolences. “Only 23 years old. Life is so unfair, and nothing is ever promised,” she wrote. “God rest your soul Willie. It was a pleasure to sing with you and to know you.”

McPhee and Spence rocked the Idol house during a duet of Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli’s “The Prayer” during season 19.

Additionally, Idol paid tribute to Spence by posting a video featuring the singer’s audition with the message: “We are devastated about the passing of our beloved American Idol family member, Willie Spence. He was a true talent who lit up every room he entered and will be deeply missed. We send our condolences to his loved ones.”

The Weeknd‘s “Die For You,” off of his 2016 album Starboy, has gotten some traction six years later thanks to TikTok.

The boost allowed the song to climb into the top half of Spotify’s Daily 200 chart — as “Die” grew from about 5 million weekly on-demand U.S. streams at the beginning of June to nearly 5.9 million in the tracking week ending July 21, according to Luminate.

Louis Tomlinson Supports One Direction Bandmate Niall Horan’s New ‘The Voice’ Gig: ‘I’ll Watch If Niall’s On’

Niall Horan‘s already got Louis Tomlinson‘s stamp of approval when it comes to joining The Voice for season 23.

Tomlinson addressed the news on Twitter during an impromptu Q&A with fans Wednesday (Oct. 12). “Louis did u know about niall in the voice? AS A COACH[?]” one fan wrote, to which the One Direction alum replied, “I saw yesterday when he posted. He’ll be great at that!”

Another fan was quick to suggest that the “Bigger Than Me” singer should serve as a “guest judge” during his pal’s freshman stint in the show’s red spinning chairs, leading him to ask, “Do they have guest judges on the voice?” (Technically, what the fan was probably thinking of was the show’s battle advisors.)

Later in the thread, Tomlinson admitted he’s never watched the popular singing competition in the past over its 22 seasons and counting, but promised, “I’ll watch it if Niall’s on.”

News of Horan joining the show next season coincided with Blake Shelton announcing that he’ll be leaving his longstanding role as The Voice‘s last original coach after season 23. Kelly Clarkson will also make her return as a coach next season after taking the current season off while The Kelly Clarkson Show took off on a cross-country road trip to launch its fourth year, and Chance the Rapper will join the panel for the first time alongside fellow rookie Horan.

When it comes to the One Direction guys supporting one another’s solo careers, Horan has been particularly vocal in his fandom of Harry Styles’ latest era, dancing the night away at the fellow boy bander’s June show at London’s Wembley Stadium and naming Styles’ record-breaking No. 1 hit “As It Was” as his current favorite song.
