Beyonce’s Radio ‘Renaissance’ Continues as ‘Cuff It’ Tops R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay

Beyoncé reasserts her radio dominance on both the R&B/hip-hop and rhythmic formats as “Cuff It” follows the chart-topping success of “Break My Soul” earlier this year. “Cuff It” tops Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart (dated Dec. 10) and ensures the superstar’s first time with multiple No. 1s in the same year for the first time since 2003, as “Break My Soul” reigned for five weeks in August – September.

“Cuff” jumps from No. 3 after it registered a strong 24% weekly increase to 21.7 million in audience that made it the most-heard song on U.S. monitored R&B and hip-hop radio stations in the week ending Dec. 4, according to Luminate. The 4.2 million audience improvement also secures “Cuff” the weekly Greatest Gainer honor among the chart’s 50 songs.

The new champ is Beyoncé’s 10th No. 1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart as a solo artist. Here’s a rundown of Queen Bey’s chart-topping collection on the list:

  • “Crazy in Love,” featuring Jay-Z, four weeks at No. 1, beginning July 19, 2003
  • “Baby Boy,” featuring Sean Paul, five, Sept. 27, 2003
  • “Irreplaceable,” nine, Dec. 2, 2006
  • “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” 12, Nov. 29, 2008
  • “Love on Top,” seven, March 10, 2012
  • “Drunk in Love,” featuring Jay-Z, eight, Feb. 1, 2014
  • “7/11,” five, Feb. 14, 2015
  • “Savage,” Megan Thee Stallion featuring Beyoncé, three, May 23, 2020
  • “Break My Soul,” five, Aug. 6, 2022
  • “Cuff It,” one (to date), Dec. 10, 2022

Plus, as Beyoncé enters the double-digit club with 10 No. 1s on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, she’s the first woman to earn that honor since the chart launched in 1992. Overall, she’s only the fourth member, joining Drake (28), Usher (15) and Lil Wayne (12).

Likewise, “Cuff It” captures the crown on the Rhythmic Airplay chart, where it leaps from No. 4 following an 18% surge in weekly plays that made it the most-played song on U.S. monitored rhythmic radio stations in the week ending Dec. 4. As on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, the swell of activity ensures the chart’s Greatest Gainer honor for the new champ.

With “Cuff It,” Beyoncé pushes her solo career count to 12 No. 1s on Rhythmic Airplay. Here’s a look at the dozen chart-toppers:

  • “’03 Bonnie & Clyde,” Jay-Z featuring Beyoncé, three, Jan. 4, 2003
  • “Crazy in Love,” featuring Jay-Z, one, Aug. 9, 2003
  • “Baby Boy,” featuring Sean Paul, seven, Sept. 27, 2003
  • “Naughty Girl,” one, May 22, 2004
  • “Check on It,” featuring Slim Thug, one, March 4, 2006
  • “Irreplaceable,” seven, Dec. 30, 2006
  • “Sweet Dreams,” one, Nov. 28, 2009
  • “Drunk in Love,” featuring Jay-Z, three, March 1, 2014
  • “Shining,” DJ Khaled featuring Beyoncé & Jay-Z, one, May 13, 2017
  • “Savage,” Megan Thee Stallion featuring Beyoncé, two, May 30, 2020
  • “Break My Soul,” three, Aug. 20, 2022
  • “Cuff It,” one (to date), Dec. 10, 2022

Thanks to the one-two punch of “Soul” and “Cuff,” Beyoncé lands consecutive No. 1 charting singles on Rhythmic Airplay for the first time since “Naughty Girl” and “Check on It” combined forces. Plus, thanks to the same pair, parent album Renaissance is the superstar’s first with multiple chart-toppers at the radio format since Dangerously in Love launched “Crazy in Love,” “Baby Boy” and “Naughty Girl” in 2003-04.

With her now dozen Rhythmic Airplay No. 1s, Beyoncé is now one of seven artists with at least that many. Drake (36) leads the class, followed by Rihanna (17), Chris Brown, Bruno Mars, Usher (13 each) and equals Lil Wayne and The Weeknd’s career marks.

Nikki Glaser Elated to Sit on Passenger Side For ‘Carpool Karaoke’ With Wilco: ‘One of the Best Rock Bands of All Time’

Alicia Keys, Metallica, Ariana Grande, Snoop Dogg, Anitta and… Jeff Tweedy? Some of music’s biggest superstars have hopped in the driver’s seat for Apple TV’s Carpool Karaoke: The Series over the past five years. But when comedian Nikki Glaser was asked by the show’s producers who she wanted to tool around with the first name that came to mind was one of her favorite bands: Tweedy’s Wilco.

“They are objectively one of the best rock bands of all time. This isn’t up for debate,” Glaser tells Billboard about the beloved band she admits she was introduced to by her parents. “Their music has an emotional depth that I haven’t really found in any other male artists,” she adds. “I am first and foremost a depressed girl and I think Jeff Tweedy might be, too. But he’s also a good person who sees and wants what’s good for the world and others and that comes through in the music… Their music always leaves me with hope, no matter how bleak the song might be.”

Tweedy tells Billboard it was definitely “confusing” when his band got the call that Glaser wanted to take a ride with them; drummer Glenn Kotche and bassist John Stirratt hold down the back seat in the episode that is part of the new fifth season, which drops on Apple TV on Friday (Dec. 9). “I think the only reason might be because Nikki’s a fan,” he says. “She gave them a list and we were on the top of it and I thought it was fun and I like Nikki and thought it would be a fun day.”

Glaser was in fact given a list of acts she could ride with, and actually turned down a major group already booked for this season. But when producers accepted her request for the “Via Chicago” band, she says it was, “maybe the most exciting news I’ve ever received in my career.” She, of course, immediately called her parents and asked them to guess what her big news was. “They thought I was engaged, pregnant or dying,” says the comedian who returned for Wednesday night’s Masked Singer holiday special as Snowstorm and is currently on her nationwide Good Girl stand-up Tour.

The band’s singer and founder had seen some of Glaser’s stand-up before they signed on and figured she was a fan after his wife noticed that Nikki was a frequent guest during Wilco’s COVID-19 pandemic Instagram series. And while he didn’t study past episodes to get up to speed — though he definitely watched the Sir Paul McCartney one — Tweedy says he was impressed with how tricked out the car was and the fact that he would actually have to drive around while chatting Glaser up. “I always liked doing the driving on our van tours and it helps a guy like me to have something to do with my hands,” he laughs.

One of the most revealing moments in the episode comes when prolific, poetic songwriter Tweedy reveals that as a kid he once pretended to write Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” to impress his school mates. “I had a homemade cassette and I played it for people on the playground and told them it was me,” he says. “I don’t think anybody believed it, but I didn’t care. It was a wish-casting thing.”

Definitely one of the weirder mainstream gigs Wilco has played, Tweedy figures that the “Karaoke” trip will probably land with his wife, kids and extended family, though he suspects his late parents would not have been so impressed. “They probably would have thought Nikki was a bit too blue for their taste.”

They may not have loved her more NC-17-rated material, but surely Tweedy’s folks would appreciate that Glaser is such a mega-fan of their son’s work that in describing the conversation they have in the episode about not over-thinking while writing she quotes one of her favorite Wilco songs, “What a Light” from 2007’s Sky Blue Sky album: “And if the whole world’s singing your songs/ And all of your paintings have been hung/ Just remember what was yours/ Is everyone’s from now on.”

Glaser — who recently began trying to write songs — says the ride was a dream come true and that the band members were “nicer than I already knew they would be. And funnier,” not to mention super “normal, kind, patient and easy.” In fact, after a long day of doing “a lot of wacky stuff with a hyperventilating superfan comedian” the band seemed to have as much fun as she did. Plus they gave her the greatest gift of all.

“Because my parents got me into Wilco, I couldn’t resist inviting them to set that day,” she says of the weekend shoot in Chicago that also included longtime Wilco pal and legendary gospel singer Mavis Staples. “I had them keep their distance the whole day while we shot, but after we wrapped, I introduced them to the band and we took some pics. Within seconds, they invited us back to The Loft — their iconic studio in Chicago. We were in shock. Me, my mom, my dad, and my boyfriend got to take a tour of their recording space, play Glen’s drums, gawk at memorabilia and just hang.”

None of that was originally scheduled and in the time since their March shoot the Glasers have stayed friendly with Wilco and she even flew her folks out to Denver to hang some more and see the band at Red Rocks in September.

The comedian tagged “She’s a Jar” from 1999’s Summerteeth as her favorite Wilco tune (“I don’t know what any of it means, but at the same time I have never felt so understood”) and says she was sure the moody ballad about a fractured relationship was a “long shot” to be included in the typically upbeat series. “They literally said, ‘this won’t air, but you deserve this moment,’” she says producers told her.

Spoiler alert: it did make the final cut and Glaser could not be more excited. “Singing ‘She’s a Jar’ with Jeff was one of the only times I have ever forcibly relinquished any kind of performative edifice while actively being filmed,” she says.

The entire fifth season debuts on Friday, also featuring: Sandra Oh and Duran Duran (Simon Le Bon and John Taylor), Chris Redd and Method Man, Ciara and Russell Wilson, the For All Mankind cast, Kevin and Michael Bacon and Hillary and Chelsea Clinton with Amber Ruffin and Vanessa Williams.

Johnny Marks & Owen Bradley Return to No. 1 on Hot 100 Songwriters & Producers Charts

Johnny Marks and Owen Bradley return to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Songwriters and Hot 100 Producers charts, respectively, thanks to seasonal classics making their annual return to the Billboard Hot 100 (with all charts dated Dec. 10).

Marks rules Hot 100 Songwriters on the strength of three songwriting credits on the latest Hot 100: Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” (No. 3), Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas” (No. 6) and Gene Autry’s “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” (No. 34).

With his 15th week at No. 1, Marks ties Lin-Manuel Miranda for the second-most time spent at the summit since the chart began in 2019. Olivia Rodrigo leads all acts with 22 weeks on top.

With holiday hits annually scaling the Hot 100, Marks has now ruled Hot 100 Songwriters in each of the four most recent Yuletide seasons, starting in December 2019. He died in 1985 at age 75, and became the first artist to posthumously top the chart. He concurrently tops the Holiday Songwriters list, which Billboard launched a week ago.

On the Hot 100 Producers chart, Bradley returns to No. 1 thanks to his production on Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” and Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock” (No. 5).

Similar to Marks, Bradley has topped the producers chart every year since Billboard initiated the producer charts. With his eighth week at No. 1, he ties Finneas for the seventh-most weeks spent at No. 1. Dan Nigro leads all acts with 27 weeks at the helm. Bradley died in 1998 at age 82.

The weekly Hot 100 Songwriters and Hot 100 Producers charts are based on total points accrued by a songwriter and producer, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot 100; plus, genre-based songwriter and producer charts follow the same methodology based on corresponding “Hot”-named genre charts. As with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally (and the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties on rankings).

The full Hot 100 Songwriters and Hot 100 Producers charts, in addition to the full genre rankings, can be found on Billboard.com.

Here’s ‘The News’: Paramore Drops New Song & Horror-Themed Music Video

The endless cycle of bad things happening in the news can be, well, soul crushing, but here’s a scoop that’ll actually brighten your day: Paramore just dropped a new song. The punk-rock trio returned Thursday (Dec. 8) with “The News,” the second single off their upcoming album This Is Why, along with an angst-filled, horror-themed music video.

In the three-minute track, frontwoman Hayley Williams rages against the “exploitative, performative” news circuit constantly occupying her devices, and laments over feeling useless that she can’t do anything to help crises happening miles away from her. Drummer Zac Farro and guitarist Taylor York don’t make an appearance in the music video — which centers on Williams writhing around spookily with iris-less eyeballs and bloody teeth — but their musical presence throughout the raucous new track shouts just as loud as her piercing vocals.

“The News” comes a little more than two months behind “This Is Why,” the lead single and title track of their first album in five years, which is slated for a February release. “It feels like a happy medium between classic Paramore angst and bringing in some influences we’ve always had but never exploited,” Williams said of the song in a statement. “Watching Zac track drums for this one was one of my favorite memories from the studio.”

“Lyrically, it probably explains itself,” she continued. “The 24-hour news cycle is just impossible to comprehend. And I feel a pang of guilt when I unplug to protect my headspace. The common reaction, or non-reaction, seems to be dissociation. Not one of us is innocent of that and who could blame us?”

Leading up to the release of the track, Paramore teased fans by DMing them pieces of the lyrics and even going as far as to mail them parts of the song on CD. In November, the band wrapped up a preliminary leg of its ongoing tour, which will resume in February.

On “The News” release day, the trio appeared on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music 1 Show to chat about the song, with Williams revealing why they chose this moment to explore more political themes in their music. “It started with just the pandemic,” the Nashville native explained. “There was George Floyd, there were all these uprisings, there were marches and protests that we went to. There was a bombing by a conspiracy theorist on Christmas Day in Nashville.”

“It’s like we’re experiencing it from whatever vantage point we’re at, and there’s something to say about it,” she continued. “And I’m hoping, I’m praying and hoping that the perspective and the lyrics that we’re presenting is personal enough and as much with respect to everyone’s specific or potential vantage point that maybe other people can relate to it in some way that we haven’t even intended.”

Metallica’s ‘Lux Æterna’ Launches at No. 1 on Hot Hard Rock Songs Chart

Metallica‘s “Lux Æterna” soars in at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart dated Dec. 10.

Following its Nov. 28 premiere, the track bows with 5.3 million in radio audience, 3.3 million official U.S. streams and 4,000 sold through Dec. 1, according to Luminate.

“Lux” previews 72 Reasons, the band’s 11th studio album, due April 14, 2023.

Metallica previously topped Hot Hard Rock Songs (which began in 2020) for nine weeks starting in July with its 1986 classic “Master of Puppets,” sparked by its synch in Netflix’s Stranger Things.

“Lux” concurrently charges in at No. 2 on Mainstream Rock Airplay, the chart’s best debut since 2006, when Red Hot Chili Peppers‘ “Dani California” also began at No. 2. Metallica ties its highest arrival on the list, matching 2003’s “St. Anger.” The band now boasts 25 top 10s on the tally, dating to its first — “Enter Sandman,” in 1991.

“Lux” also opens at No. 2 on Rock & Alternative Airplay and becomes the group’s first Alternative Airplay entry since 2009 at No. 35.

The track debuts at No. 1 on Hard Rock Digital Song Sales (marking Metallica’s fifth ruler since the chart began in 2007 and second this year following “Puppets” [seven weeks]) and at No. 7 on Hard Rock Streaming Songs.

72 Reasons is Metallica’s first studio album since Hardwired…to Self-Destruct, which debuted as the band’s sixth No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart in December 2016. The group first led with its self-titled set in August 1991; the album spends a 688th week on the Dec. 10-dated survey, the fourth-longest run in the tally’s history, dating to 1956.

Taylor Swift Goes Full Director Mode in ‘All Too Well’ Behind-the-Scenes Footage: Watch

And … cut. Taylor Swift released her longest directorial project to date last year when she dropped “All Too Well: The Short Film,” a heartbreaking 14-minute music video starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien. And now, she’s giving fans a glimpse into how she put the whole thing together.

In a Thursday (Dec. 8) post on Instagram, the 32-year-old pop star shared several minutes of behind-the-scenes footage from her shoot with Sink and O’Brien, who portrayed onscreen the dysfunctional, age-gap relationship Swift describes in her record-setting No. 1 Red (Taylor’s Version) track “All Too Well (10 Minute Version).” In many of the clips, a pony-tailed Swift describes to the actors in detail how they should be feeling in the moment, sometimes trading places with them and tracking their approximate movements for them.

“The first seeds of this short film were planted over ten years ago, and I’ll never forget the behind the scenes moments of the shoot,” she wrote in her caption. “I owe everything to @sadiesink_, Dylan O’Brien, my incredible DP @the_rinayang and my producer @saulysaulysauly.”

Not only does Swift closely direct the video’s two stars, but she also gives specific instructions to its many background extras. In one of the short film’s most meticulously planned scenes, she instructs when exactly the camera should zoom in and out, when exactly an actor should place a birthday cake in front of Sink, and when exactly the Stranger Things star should blow out the candles.

“I also want to say thank you to our wonderful background actors and crew who made this story come to life so naturally,” she added. “I loved every second of it and I will always remember it. All. Too. Well. The behind the scenes footage of ATW the short film is out now!”

Both the “All Too Well” song and short film have become some of the 11-time Grammy winner’s most critically acclaimed projects, with the video winning video of the year at this year’s VMAs. Swift has made appearances at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival to speak about her directorial process, and the short film is eligible for a nomination at next year’s Oscars in the live-action short category.

Mariah Carey Clarifies ‘Queen of Christmas‘ Mess, Harmonizes With Stephen Colbert During ’Colbert Questionert’

Mariah Carey is known. But on Wednesday night’s (Dec. 7) Late Show With Stephen Colbert she was also seen as she sat down for the the show’s scientifically dubious “Colbert Questionert,” in which the host probed the recesses of her mind in order to peel back the unseen layers of the divine miss MC.

After a few minutes of idle chatter about how much better it is to chat in person than on Zoom — as the pair did during the COVID-19 pandemic — before he could even get the Questionert started, Colbert stumbled out of the gate. “Because you are the Queen of Christmas, I’ve got a couple…” he started, before Carey immediately cut him off.

“First of all, may I say I never called myself the Queen of Christmas. Can we please be clear on that?,” Carey said with authority as Colbert noted that he never called her that; Carey recently lost a legal fight over her effort to claim the “Queen of Christmas” trademark. “But others have [said], ‘the self-proclaimed Queen of Christmas.’ I’m like, ‘really? I’m gonna do that?’ They can look up every interview I’ve ever done, and not to get super religious, but if anybody would be the Queen of Christmas that would be Mary?”

For the record, MC said, Christmas is for all and she just happens to really love it too. With that settled, nearly 7 minutes into the segment, Colbert finally got to the first question… which he also fumbled. “White lights or colored lights at Christmas?” he asked the “All I Want For Christmas Is You” singer.

“Um, I’m going to say is that politically correct in the way that you phrased that,” Carey asked with a sideways glance. A grinning Colbert was momentarily speechless about his verbal faux pas. “I’m going to… as a biracial… as a Black and biracial mix… Black, Irish,” Carey laughed while seamlessly plugging her Black Irish liquor brand.

Asked to pick between hot cocoa and eggnog, of course MC went with the cocoa… with a splash of Black Irish, naturally. As for whether she goes angel or star on her tree top, Carey said both, because the unofficial yuletide royal has four trees in her house. But when Colbert wondered when it’s time to start playing Christmas songs, the singer — who famously does not acknowledge time — said she had no idea “All I Want” would have such long legs when she wrote it more than two decades ago. So when she goes shopping, which she only does at Christmas, she said it seems like every retail outlet she hits is playing “cool” music and not classic holiday tunes.

Among her other answers: Best Sandwich (chicken parm with mozzarella cheese instead, lightly toasted), One Thing She Owns She Should Throw Out (a “hideously ugly” jacket in her closet that is multicolored, bright and sparkly), What’s the Scariest Animal? (snakes), Apples or Oranges? (oranges), What Do You Think Happens When We Die? (“the assured expectation of things hoped for, the evidence of things yet unseen.”) and Window or Aisle? (“a bed.”)

And, finally, if she only got one song to listen to for the rest of her life, she said, “Stephen Colbert’s latest hit.” When the host informed her that the last song he sang was “All I Want For Christmas” during the previous night’s monologue, Carey insisted he prove how much of her perennial holiday No. 1 he knew. But MC being MC, after Colbert busted out the first verse and chorus, the famously exacting singer joined in and sang, “You skipped a little part of the B section, but that’s all right.”

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” has already begun its now-annual journey up the Hot 100 for this Christmas season. On the chart dated Dec. 10, the 1994 single sits at No. 2, just behind Taylor Swift’s “Anti-Hero.” It’s peaked at No. 1 three years in a row now, dating back to its first ascension in 2019.

Jonathan McReynolds Notches Fifth Gospel Airplay No. 1 With ‘Your World’

Jonathan McReynolds‘ “Your World” ascends to the top of Billboard‘s Gospel Airplay chart (dated Dec. 10), marking his record-tying fifth No. 1 in a row, encompassing all his leaders.

In the tracking week ending Dec. 4, “Your World” increased by 22% in plays, according to Luminate.

McReynolds co-authored the song with Dee Wilson.

“The past year has been filled with great milestones,” McReynolds tells Billboard. “I’m thankful that we have been able to offer life-changing music that points people straight to the source of it all.”

McReynolds ties Todd Dulaney, who also boasts an active run of five straight Gospel Airplay No. 1s. In September, Dulaney notched his fifth in succession with “Satisfied,” featuring Smokie Norful (marking Dulaney’s sixth leader overall, and Norful’s third).

For the 33-year-old McReynolds, who hails from Chicago, “Your World” follows “Grace,” which dominated for a week in August 2021. “Movin’ On,” a collaboration with Mali Music, topped the tally for one frame in October 2020; “Make Room” became a one-week leader in December 2019; and “Not Lucky, I’m Loved” paced the chart for a week in September 2018.

McReynolds has notched one additional top 10, “Gotta Have You” (No. 5, August 2015).

Plus, “Your World” completes McReynolds’ quickest trip to the Gospel Airplay summit: 15 weeks. The ascent passes “Grace,” which reached the penthouse in its 21stweek.
