Macklemore Reveals How Relapse Created ‘Darker, More Honest & Vulnerable Moments’ on His Upcoming Album

In a new interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the star opened up about his relapse in the summer of 2020. “It was an intense time. The life that I knew, just like all of our lives, was stripped away. I’m used to a certain schedule of touring, of being gone, of being home, of recovery and being able to go to a physical 12-step meeting,” he explained. “That stopped during COVID. Eventually, I’m on Instagram while being on Zoom and I’m just not really paying attention to the meetings. Eventually — and this is what happens when I don’t prioritize my recovery — if I don’t put that first, then I will lose everything that I’m putting in front of it. That’s what happens.”

He added that “luckily,” the relapse only lasted a few weeks, bu caused a lot of “pain” that he still feels two and a half years later. “I’m still working on getting back trust, but I think that it gave me a reprieve, a reminder again, a slap in the face. Not a delicate reminder, but a slap in the face reminder,” he said. “‘This is your life. You get one of these. What are you going to do with this precious time on this Earth? Do you want to be secretive? Do you want to be hiding? Do you want to be in the shadows, or do you want to live your life to it’s fullest potential, get back on it and be honest?’”

Macklemore also channeled that pain into Ben, his upcoming album out on March 3. “I think that pain is a catalyst for great art. I don’t want to inflict the pain on myself anymore to make art. It’s not like I need to self-sabotage in order to create, but I think that it created some darker, more honest and vulnerable moments on the album,” he shared. “Again, a relapse is not […] any sort of part of the process, but it does create that vulnerability.”

The clip comes just two weeks after Trainor revealed that she’s expecting her second child with husband Daryl Sabara on the TODAY show, adding that she’s also releasing a book all about pregnancy titled Dear Future Mamas on April 25.

Trainor, who’s four months pregnant, and Sabara first became parents in February 2021, when they welcomed their son, Riley. The “All About That Bass” musician’s experiences being pregnant with and giving birth to Riley will serve as the focus of Dear Future Mamas, which will also include “TMI real talk” about body image, the newborn days and more.

“After feeling so overwhelmed and alone in my first pregnancy, I was inspired to write this book to make sure no other future mama ever felt like that,” Trainor said in a statement. “I want to give future mamas permission to find the right path for them — without the judgment of others. I want this book to feel like a hug from a bestie.”

J-Hope Faces Obstacles in Last ‘J-Hope IN THE BOX’ Trailer

J-Hope dropped the final trailer for his upcoming documentary J-Hope IN THE BOX on Friday (Feb. 10).

The music film follows the BTS member over the course of more than 200 days as he records his debut solo album Jack in the Box and prepares for his solo headlining set at Lollapalooza 2022. In the clip, the rapper faces serious obstacles in the lead-up to the studio set’s release. “Rearrangements aren’t coming out. Dance isn’t coming out either,” he says in the video, admitting, “Thinking of that, I can’t sleep. This is frustrating.

“I am doing everything from start to finish,” J-Hope continues. “I included many things that are my concerns…Music of J-Hope’s world is inside the box. I don’t want to deny that. That’s also me too. Thinking that, I did think about how I should show my maturity too.”

Later in the trailer, he reflects on the support his BTS bandmates gave him through the process of going out on his own. “If members are around me, I gain synergy,” he says as he readies himself for Lollapalooza. “But it’s just me who must create that.”

J-Hope IN THE BOX is set to premiere next Friday (Feb. 17) on Weverse and around the world on Disney+.

At the end of 2022, J-Hope closed out the year by performing a mash-up of 2019’s “Chicken Noodle Soup” and a special holiday remix of BTS’ “Butter” as part of New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

“An intervention did not occur. My wife is in full control of her life and will continue to make all decisions involving her care regardless of circumstances. Speculation on her health is inappropriate and should end immediately,” Asghari told Access Hollywood on Friday (Feb. 10).

Outlets including TMZ and People reported earlier this week that Spears’ friends were so concerned about her health that they planned an intervention for the singer that was canceled at the last minute.

Spears herself also seemingly responded to the situation via Instagram, writing, “It makes me sick to my stomach that it’s even legal for people to make up stories that I almost died … I mean at some point enough is enough !!! I’m probably going to have to stop posting on Instagram because even though I enjoy doing it, there’s obviously a lot of people who don’t wish me well !!!”

Though the “Piece of Me” singer did not directly address the intervention rumors in her post on Thursday (Feb. 9) — which included a slide that read “A state of gratitude will shift you to a higher frequency” — she did say that the stories did not surprise her “at all. Again doing the best I can !!! Again, the conservatorship has been over for almost a year … No folks, it’s not 2007 … it’s 2023 and I’m making my first homemade lasagna at home !!!”

From Taylor Swift to Paramore, What’s Your Favorite New Release of the Week? Vote!

Everyone from Taylor Swift to Paramore dropped new music just in time for Valentine’s Day, and Billboard wants to know which release you plan on having on repeat going into the holiday.

Swift continues riding the wave of her newest single “Lavender Haze” with a dance-heavy remix for the Midnights opener by Felix Jaehn. (Prior to being tapped by the superstar, the German producer was likely most familiar to U.S. audiences for helming Omi’s 2015 No. 1 hit “Cheerleader.”)

Hayley Williams and her bandmates, meanwhile, deliver their long-awaited comeback album This Is Why. The pop-punk trio’s first follow-up to 2017’s After Laughter contains singles “This Is Why,” “The News” and “C’est Comme Ça.”

Elsewhere, Lizzo teams up with her bestie SZA for a new remix of “Special,” which finds Billboard‘s newly revealed Woman of the Year preaching, “Woke up this mornin’ to somebody judgin’ me/ No surprise they judgin’ me, don’t know who I’m ‘posed to be I’m just actin’ up, I’m crass as f–k, and never sayin’ sorry/ Found out in the end that I can only do it for me.”

Dove Cameron also joins forces with Khalid on the sultry new collaboration “We Go Down Together,” Luke Combs follows up his debut on the Grammys stage with”Love You Anyway” off his upcoming album Gettin’ Old, D4vd unveils the heartsick, pleading “Placebo Effect” and Mariah Carey cashes in on the viral resurgence of “It’s a Wrap” by dedicating an entire EP to the Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel fan favorite.

Rosalía co-created the flavor, which serves up a unique twist on the classic taste, at the Coca-Cola headquarters in Georgia. “I went to Atlanta, and tried a thousand flavors and chose aromas,” she told Billboard Español. “The whole process of getting to the flavor that you are looking for is a lot of fun.”

“I gave in to the flavors that awakened something in me,” she added. “The ones that made me close my eyes when I tasted them and that seemed more delicious to me. It reminds me a lot of coconut, my favorite fruit, and one that I have always eaten since I was little.”

The Coca-Cola collab includes an exclusive track, “Lie Like You Love Me,” which dropped on Jan. 27. Meanwhile, the special-edition Coke cans and bottles channel Rosalía’s lively personality, with vibrant colors and doodles hand-drawn by the singer. Additionally, fans scan a QR code on the collectible Coca-Cola Move can or bottle to access the digital Coca-Cola Creations Hub featuring exclusive, behind-the-scenes content from the making of “LLYLM” and more.

“Transformation as a means of self-expression is powerful and resonant for today’s generation, and music is the universal language for transformation” said Oana Vlad, Senior Director, Global Strategy at The Coca-Cola Company. “Partnering with the inspirational and genre-defying Rosalía to bring to life our latest drop under Coca-Cola Creations has been a blast and has broken new ground for Coca-Cola Creations. We hope our collective fans will love this drink!”

Fans will also get a chance to bid on Rosalía memorabilia, including an autographed helmet, tour outfit, poster and other collectibles. Proceeds from the auction will support the Antonio Gala Foundation, a non-profit based in Rosalía’s home country of Spain that provides residency scholarships to young creators.

The new Coca-Cola Move flavor, available in cans and bottles, will be released in the U.S and in Canada on Feb. 20. Coca-Cola previously collaborated with DJ Marshmello on a limited-edition flavor last year. Aside from the signature flavor and limited-edition drops, Coca-Cola offers Coke vanilla, Coke cherry and cherry vanilla.

Rosalía has a lot in the works. Besides the beverage collab, the 30-year-old recording artist will take the stage at Coachella, which kicks off April 14-16. This year’s festival will be headlined by Frank Ocean, Bad Bunny, and BLACKPINK. Other names on the bill include Charlie XCX, Gorillaz, Burna Boy, The Chemical Brothers, Blondie, Becky G, Metro Boomin, Latto, Björk, Kali Uichi, Porter Robinson, Glorilla, Jai Paul and Jackson Wang.

Karol G Unveils Her New Album’s Tracklist & Announces the Release Date

Karol G‘s new album Mañana Será Bonito is set to drop Feb. 24, the Colombian star announced on Friday (Feb. 10). The chart-topping artist also unveiled the set’s colorful doodle-inspired cover and the tracklist.

The 17-song album, which kicks off with “Mientras Me Curo del Cora,” features collaborations with Quevedo, Carla Morrison, Sean Paul, Sech, Bad Gyal, Justin Quiles and Angel Dior. It also includes previously released singles “Provenza,” “Cairo” with Ovy on the Drums, “Gatubela” featuring Maldy, and the Romeo Santos-assisted “X Si Volvemos.”

“This is the face of my album,” Karol wrote on social media. “I present it with all my love and pride. To be honest, I can’t believe I was able to contain myself and not share the release date sooner but I can finally share it with you. I am happy and counting down the days.”

Mañana Será Bonito will be her fourth studio album. It will follow her 2021 Grammy-nominated KG0516, which scored Karol her first No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums. The set earned the biggest week for a Latin album by a woman since Shakira‘s 2017 El Dorado.

The “Provenza” singer nabbed the No. 1 spot on Billboard‘s 2022 year-end Top Latin Artists – Female chart for a fourth consecutive year. She was also No. 2 on the overall Top Latin Artists chart – the only female act in the top 10. Furthermore, Karol G’s $trip Love Tour became the highest grossing U.S. tour by Latin female act in history. It grossed $69.9 million and sold 410,000 tickets across 33 shows in North America (through the end of October), according to numbers reported to Billboard Boxscore.

Is there more? You betcha. Let’s dig in.

Jessie Ware, “Pearls”

Albums heavily featuring house and disco sounds are winning Grammys? Jessie Ware has logged into the chat. After winning our hearts (and the title of Billboard’s top dance album of 2020) with her most-excellent album What’s Your Pleasure?, the sultry club chanteuse is back again with a new single, “Pearls” — and the announcement of her next album, That! Feels! Good!, due April 28 via PMR / EMI. (Ware previously released another of the album’s tracks, “Free Yourself,” last summer.)

Like its namesake, “Pearls” brings luxury to the disco, with gilded keys and elegant strings that soar with Ware as she belts the euphoric chorus: “Let me go! Let me dance!” Like her iconic inspirations for the song, Donna Summer, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Teena Marie and Chaka Khan, Ware delivers eyes-closed, disco-diva bliss in a song she says “doesn’t take itself too seriously, but demands you to have a dance.” — KRYSTAL RODRIGUEZ

Flume, “Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan 1.2 [2020 Export Wav]”

Seeing Flume live on stage is cool and all, but there’s no better Flume-fan feeling than pressing play on a newly released Flume production. His tunes are the type you need to absorb by putting on those headphones, turning off the lights and exploring every nook and cranny of textured sound. In that regard, this week was stellar, because the Australian envelope-pusher dropped a surprise 10-track mixtape of previously unreleased bits and bops. The vibes are varied — from gritty rumblin’-bass rap growlers to tweaked and freaked romantic ballads to side-winding sonic sound tunnels and every shade of strange, surreal and superfly in between. There’s even a song with Panda Bear of Animal Collective! For whatever reason, these tunes never made it onto any other official Flume releases. I guess that’s because they were destined for this. Hey, Things Don’t Always Go The Way You Plan, but they do always go — especially when it comes to Flume. – KAT BEIN

BLOND:ISH, Eran Hersh & Darmon, “Sorry (With Madonna)”

Madonna’s “Sorry” — the second single from her 2005 Confessions On a Dancefloor — gets an official edit today from BLOND:ISH and L.A.-based producer pals Eran Hersh and Darmon. With their rework, Madonna’s vocals get pitched way down “so the vocal was recognizable but not obvious,” says BLOND:ISH. “We really wanted the person listening to this to be like ‘Oh f–k, wait, I totally know this song!’”

Indeed we do, with the sleek as chrome original here taking on a tougher edge that pays homage to the dancefloor-centric ethos of the original and has the nod of approval from Madonna herself. “We soon started playing ‘Sorry’ at our shows, and the response was overwhelming,” BLOND:ISH continues. “So much so that I said, ‘You know, we must be only one degree of separation, let me try and get a hold of Madonna.’ As they say, ‘You’ll never know if you don’t ask’, so I knew I had to at least reach out to see if she would be interested in formally collaborating on this with us. A good friend of mine sent her a message directly and we made it happen just like that.” This fresh version for “Sorry” is out via Insomniac Records. — KATIE BAIN

Floorplan, “We Give Thee Honor”

Worship is back in session. Floorplan, the father-daughter duo of Robert and Lyric Hood, have returned to Luke Solomon’s Classic Music Company with their latest EP, We Give Thee Honor / Makes Me Wanna. It’s a high-energy showcase of their gospel roots with two tracks that summon a higher power to the dancefloor. A-side “We Give Thee Honor” is a stomper right out the gate, with driving percussion, organ stabs and piercing synth strings seemingly designed to bring you to the edge of sensory overload. Powerful yet soothing gospel-choir vocals and a looming, earth-swallowing wail—be it human or machine—takes listeners over the edge in the best way. Even when the club hits peaktime, “We Give Thee Honor” leads the way to a new level of house heaven. — K.R.

Chloé Caillet Feat. Poté, “Know Now”

If you’re looking to slink into the weekend with a vibe that’s equal parts runway model and shadowy figure in the back of the club, French DJ and producer Chloé Caillet’s “Know Now” is the dark and mysterious groove that can get you there. From her upcoming EP on CircoLoco Records, this absolute mood is hitting parts of our brain that haven’t been stimulated since The Knife dropped Silent Shout. It’s a little bit haunting, a little bit sexy, and definitely all the way stuck in our heads for the next few months. The song features a delicately cool vocal from her friend Poté. Look out for the rest of this EP coming in the spring. – K. Bein

Francis Mercier, “Kamili”

New York-based producer Francis Mercier is poised for his biggest year to date, with the Deep Root Records founder making his Coachella debut in April in the midst of a world tour powered by a string of excellent releases. That streak continues with today’s dreamy “Kamili.” Out via Diplo’s Higher Ground, the house track is a collaboration with Zimbabwean producer Nitefreak and Kenyan singer Idd Aziz, who delivers soulful lyrics in Swahili about his brother, who’s been missing for more than two decades.

“Kamili is undoubtedly my most exciting release to date. It is such an honor to be collaborating with the talented Nitefreak, Idd Aziz, and Higher Ground on this very emotional and powerful record,” says Mercier. “Bringing African musical excellence to the United States’ dance music community is truly exciting.” — K. Bain

Also capturing her first top 10 on Top Album Sales is Elle King, as her new Come Get Your Wife starts at No. 9 with nearly 7,000 sold. She previously topped out at No. 15 in 2018 with Shake the Spirit.

Also in the top 10, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, Grateful Dead, Sam Smith, Bob Dylan and Elle King all arrive with new releases, while Avril Lavigne’s Let Go re-enters the chart in the top 10 after its 20th anniversary reissue on vinyl.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated Dec. 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both Twitter and Instagram.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER snags its fourth No. 1 on Top Album Sales – and biggest sales week yet – as The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION enters with 152,000 copies sold.

The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION scores the largest sales week for any album since Taylor Swift’s Midnights debuted at No. 1 with 1.14 million copies sold on the Nov. 5, 2022-dated chart. Of The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION’s 152,000 sold, 98% were CD sales (148,500), while 2% were digital album sales (3,500). The set was not available to purchase in any other configuration (such as vinyl or cassette).

The CD configuration of The Name Chapter: TEMPTATION was issued in collectible packages (14 total, including exclusive editions for Barnes & Noble, Target and the Weverse webstore), each with a standard set of internal paper items and branded randomized mystery elements (photo cards, photo books, post cards). CD sales were also enhanced by autographed editions sold via the act’s webstore.

Grateful Dead’s latest archival live set, Dave’s Picks, Volume 45: Paramount Theatre, Portalnd, OR 10/1/77 & 10/2/77 debuts at No. 2 with 19,000 sold.

Dave’s Picks is the act’s continuing live archival release series, named for the group’s archivist, David Lemieux, that has been going strong since its first release in 2012. Releases in the series are issued exclusively on CD and in limited quantities.

On the Billboard 200 chart, Dave’s Picks, Vol. 45 debuts at No. 18, marking the band’s 55th top 40-charting album on the list. The act continues to have the most top 40 albums among groups since the chart began regularly publishing on a weekly basis in March of 1956. The band also surpasses Barbra Streisand to become the overall act with the third-most top 40-charting albums. The acts with the most top 40 albums on the Billboard 200 are: Frank Sinatra (58), Elvis Presley (58), Grateful Dead (55), Barbra Streisand (54) and Bob Dylan (51). (37 of Grateful Dead’s 55 top 40-charting albums are from the Dave’s Picks series.)

Taylor Swift’s former No. 1 on Top Album Sales, Midnights, falls 2-3 on the latest chart, with 18,000 sold (though up 4%). Sam Smith notches their fourth top 10-charting effort as Gloria bows at No. 4 with 14,000 sold.

Bob Dylan’s Fragments: Time Out of Mind Sessions (1996-1997) debuts at No. 5 on Top Album Sales with 11,000 sold. The effort is part of Dylan’s ongoing “Bootleg Series.” With this archival project, he revisits his 1997 album Time Out of Mind, presenting alternative versions and outtakes of songs from that album, in addition to other rare cuts and live performances.

Avril Lavigne’s debut album Let Go returns to the chart for the first time since 2004, and to the top 10 for the first time since 2003, as the set re-enters at No. 6 with 9,000 sold (up 3,586%). The album was originally released in 2002 and peaked at No. 2 that September. It bounds back onto the tally after it was reissued for its 20th anniversary on vinyl (nearly all of its sales for the week were from its vinyl LP configuration).

A charity effort A Philly Special Christmas vaults 24-7 (a new peak) on Top Album Sales with 9,000 sold (up 182%), largely owed to vinyl LP sales. Across all of its formats, the album has now sold 26,000 copies (15,000 on vinyl and 11,000 on digital download). The Philly album is led by Philadelphia Eagles players Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata, the seven-track set includes renditions of holiday favorites like “White Christmas” and “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.” All profits from the album benefit Philadelphia’s Children’s Crisis Treatment Center.
