Ed Sheeran, Lil Baby, Megan Moroney & More: What’s Your Favorite New Music Release? Vote!

This first new music Friday of May sees the conclusion of a major album series from Ed Sheeran, as well as promising material from hip-hop heavyweight Lil Baby and country star Megan Moroney.

Preceded by singles “Eyes Closed” and “Boat,” Sheeran’s new album (Subtract) concludes his five-album-long mathematics series. The new project serves as some of the most personal material the British pop star has released yet, with him revealing it was written in the throes of tragedy in his life, with wife Cherry Seaborn developing a brain tumor while pregnant and his close friend Jamal Edwards passing away. The LP sees Sheeran excel at a more stripped back approach, without having to rely on pop machinery.

Lil Baby has revived a fan favorite track. “New” single “Go Hard” has made the rounds on the web for the past three years as “Again” and “Again (Go Hard),” but the official version of the track hasn’t lost any of its grit. “I’m not into losin’, I go hard as I can go to win,” Baby declares on the song, making it a perfect addition for any pre-game or workout playlist.

Moroney’s star is on track to continue rising with the release of her debut album Lucky. Singles “Tennessee Orange” and “I’m Not Pretty” provide the framework for the set, but the other tracks on the LP highlight Moroney’s penchant for storytelling.

Toosii (featuring Khalid) and YoungBoy Never Broke Again (alongside Dermot Kennedy and Bailey Zimmerman) also return with new material this week. Of all the new music, which release is your favorite? Vote in our poll below.

How Cities Are Celebrating Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Stops

City officials have been pulling out all the stops to welcome the superstar.

Taylor Swift‘s The Eras tour is making its way across North America, and city officials have been pulling out all the stops to welcome the superstar to their stadiums.

The friendly competition between cities to one-up the royal treatment has led to all types of exciting photo ops for Swifties and honors for Swift herself. From making Swift the honorary mayor of the day and giving her the key to the city to renaming stadiums, streets and even cities themselves, The Eras tour is certainly making an impact on every location it visits.

We’ve compiled all the fun ways cities have been welcoming The Eras tour, and we’ll be updating it as Swift continues her string of performances. See below.

Nashville Dedicates ‘Invisible String’ Inspired Bench in Centennial Park to Taylor Swift

You always find your way back home. Taylor Swift is homeward bound this weekend for a trio of Eras Tour shows in Nashville, and Music City just welcomed her home with a custom bench in one of her favorite spots.

Mayor John Cooper unveiled the new Swiftie seating area, located in the city’s popular hub, Centennial Park, on Twitter Thursday (May 4) — one day ahead of the pop star’s first of three concerts at Nissan Stadium. “Welcome home, @taylorswift13,” Cooper captioned two photos of a dark wood bench surrounded by bushes. “As of today, you now have the perfect place to read at Centennial Park. Nashville is READY for this weekend.”

“For Taylor Swift,” reads a small green plaque on the top plank of the bench. “A bench for you to read on at Centennial Park. Welcome home, Nashville.” The plaque is, of course, a reference to Swift’s Folklore song “Invisible String,” which opens with the lyric: “Green was the color of the grass where I used to read at Centennial Park.” Toward the end of the loved-up track, the 12-time Grammy winner references the park again: “Gold was the color of the leaves when I showed you around Centennial Park.”

The bench isn’t the only way Nashville is honoring Swift, who moved to Tennessee’s capitol from Pennsylvania as a young teenager to start her music career. Cooper also named this weekend “Taylor Swift Homecoming Weekend,” issuing an official proclamation filled with cheeky references to the singer’s lyrics.

“Long story short, Taylor Swift is a legendary musician, producer, and director,” it reads. “Karma is Taylor Swift coming straight home to Nashville to play three sold-out tour performances at Nissan stadium.”

Here’s How Niall Horan Reacted to Harry Styles’ Comment About a Possible One Direction Reunion

Niall Horan once again addressed the chatter about a potential One Direction reunion in a new interview on Thursday (May 4).

Speaking to ET Canada, the pop star admitted he’s “not surprised” by the amount of interest in seeing him reunite with his bandmates, considering he gets the question “every day.”

“I don’t know anything about it; there hasn’t been a conversation. And I’m sure if there ever is one, you’ll know about it,” he told journalist Morgan Hoffman in Toronto. “And that’s kind of the answer every time.”

At that point, the host brought up Harry Styles‘ recent remarks on the final episode of The Late Late Show With James Corden to “never say never” about the possibility of the lads getting back together. Horan responded with his two cents, saying, “I agree with Harry. Same thing as he said.”

However, Hoffman wasn’t quite finished with her 1D-related inquiries, following up the question by asking The Voice coach who he would envision playing him in an eventual big-screen biopic about the history-making boy band.

“Good question — I guess that’d have to be a young actor by then, by the time that happens,” Horan opined. “Currently if someone was to play me, it would be Allan Leech from Downton Abbey … We actually do look like each other, which is crazy. We’re both Irish, too — he wouldn’t have to change his accent, anyway.”

Currently, Horan is just a month away from releasing his third solo album The Show, which has been preceded by singles “Heaven” and “Meltdown.” Watch him dish about a One Direction reunion above.

Grimes Talks Cancel Culture With Julia Fox: ‘I’ve Always Been Exceptionally Canceled’

Grimes is fully aware that her way is not necessarily the path most people would choose. In a conversation with Julia Fox on the model’s Forbidden Fruits Spotify podcast this week, the singer dove into cancel culture and why her unique choices often get her on society’s do-not-call list.

“I think it’s fairly obvious… I’m very easy to cancel and canceled very often,” Grimes said while explaining why the traditional album promotional cycle of release-press-tour-TV/radio appearances just has never worked for her. “I’ve always been exceptionally canceled. People call me a ‘techno-fascist’… I agree a lot of things have been mishandled and we’re in this giant hiccup into a different part of civilization that is extremely unprecedented.”

In this brave new world, Grimes said it’s sometimes unclear where ethical boundaries exist, while fully admitting that she’s said some “dumb stuff” in the past. “I say a lot of dumb stuff… above average I’d say,” Grimes told Fox, who countered, “you say a lot of smart stuff too!”

“I think we need a better discourse… the way I wish people would approach me in better faith — I approach everyone in good faith — if people are being hateful on the internet those people are mad because they want a better world,” Grimes offered.

The conversation, of course, also touched on Grimes’ recent deep dive into AI on what she described as a “data collecting and spy mission” in her new hometown in the Bay Area to find out what’s happening in the space these days. “I’m pretty for it, I would say I’m fairly optimistic, I think there are some potential bad outcomes but I don’t think it’s constructive to even discuss that publicly per se,” she said, noting that too much talk could scare a potentially not super-informed public.

The tech-savvy singer then tried to explain neural nets and machine learning to Fox, lamenting that there are too much scary depictions of AI in the media these days that are freaking people out. “I think right now there is sorta a moral imperative to make more positive AI depictions because it’s literally training on the data. It will see itself on how we are seeing it right now, in many ways, and it’s a concern that is brought up often,” she said.

Grimes also delved into how she sees AI applying to the music industry at a time when she has opened up her music to the general public in an experiment in which she has promised to split profits 50/50 with anyone who uses her voice on an original AI song. “I think the engineers who create the tools that we use are often very under appreciated – all music right now is pretty much a dialogue between the engineers and the artists. We have just been given a plethora of tools that are very unprecedented,” she said of what she sees as the democritization of music.

“Over the last 15 years of music, we’ve seen a lot more regular people, not just people who’ve been christened by the labels,” she said. “You go on TikTok and you see all these kids making stuff in their bedrooms, this is the result of engineering and technology, and this has been a thing that is like really beautiful for our culture.”

The singer touched on her recent split with Columbia Records, noting that they parted on “good terms” after she realized she couldn’t be on a major label because “I can’t function normally… and the normal promo things don’t work for me.”

And, if once again you’re wondering where her long-awaited next album is, Grimes said she’s sitting on a completed LP that, frankly, she’s just “really bored” with at the moment. “It’s like two years old and I’m starting to make new things,” she said.

Doja Cat Covers Her Back With a Hardcore Bat Skeleton Tattoo: See the Photos

Doja Cat has a Doja Bat — as in, she just got a tattoo of a bat. In a Thursday (May 4) Instagram post, the rapper debuted some fresh ink: a sprawling portrait of a winged creature’s skeleton covering her entire back.

The bat tat starts at the base of Doja’s neck and extends down to the top of her waist, with its skeletal wings stretching across the musician’s shoulder blades. She showed off the new body art in a series of photos — some taken in the mirror by Doja herself, and some taken by a friend from behind — captioned with a simple bat emoji.

The Grammy winner didn’t share any personal explanations for her new artwork, instead sharing a screenshot of an article highlighting the animal’s symbolism. “Bats often represent death in the sense of letting go of the old, and bringing in the new,” reads the excerpt. “They are symbols of transition, of initiation, and the start of a new beginning.”

Though it most likely takes the cake for Doja’s biggest tattoo to date, the bat ink is far from the “Woman” artist’s first ink. She’s previously had a spider and an antelope skull permanently etched onto her forearms, to name a couple.

Doja’s latest ink appears brand new, as evidenced by her 2023 Met Gala look from just three days prior. The star wore a backless gown to the Monday (May 1) event, which, at the time, revealed a completely blank, bat-less canvas. Her bare back displayed in the jewel-encrusted dress was not the most talked-about element of her look, however. She arrived wearing cat ears and a realistic prosthetic feline nose in tribute to late designer Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved kitty, Choupette.

Godsmack Frontman Sully Erna Reveals He Dated Lady Gaga ‘for a Hot Minute’

Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin mentioned during a January appearance on the 2020’d podcast that frontman Sully Erna had dated Lady Gaga once upon a time. While Erna remained silent on the allegations, he is now confirming the news and shed some insight on his relationship with the pop star in an interview with Revolver published Thursday (May 4).

“Listen, I really don’t have a lot to say on this topic,” Erna told the publication when asked about the band’s song “Under Your Scars” and Gaga being the inspiration. “What I will tell you is that I have an immense amount of respect for her. I was introduced to her through a mutual friend. We clicked and dated for a hot minute, and there was nothing but respect for each other.”

He continued, “There may be a lot of people in the world that think she’s kooky and crazy because she’s so wild with fashion and things like that, but she knows exactly what she’s doing. She’s an extremely smart businesswoman. And she’s kind and super talented.”

Erna thinks fondly of the time he spent dating Gaga, concluding his comments by saying, “I’m proud to say that I shared some great moments with her. I was able to meet Elton John through her. She’s an incredibly great person and those are some very fond memories for me. And I’ll leave it there.”

Up next for Godsmack is a co-headlining summer tour across the United States with Staind, in support of the band’s recently release LP, Lighting Up the Sky, its final studio record.

John Legend Slams ‘Desperate’ Megyn Kelly for Attacking Chrissy Teigen’s Outfit: ‘She Can Just Shut Up’

John Legend isn’t holding back. After Megyn Kelly ripped into the outfit Chrissy Teigen wore for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last weekend, the “All Of Me” singer had some choice words for the polarizing conservative commentator.

Speaking to TMZ on Thursday (May 4), Legend theorized that Kelly chose to attack his wife in an attempt to get back into the Republican party’s good graces. “Megyn, she likes attention,” said the 12-time Grammy winner. “She needs it after getting fired from Fox, so she has to do what she can do to get attention.” [Editor’s note: Kelly chose to leave the cable news network in 2017 to join NBC News.]

“She pissed all the conservatives off when she asked Trump a tough question, so now she’s trying to figure out a way to win them back,” Legend added. “She’s desperate.”

Indeed, Kelly has clashed with Trump and his followers ever since she asked the former president point-blank about his track record of calling women “fat pigs” and “slobs” during a Republican debate in 2015. Eight years later, Teigen attends President Biden’s 2023 WHCD in a leggy gown and a few assistants there to help carry her train — and Kelly takes issue.

“I see Chrissy Tiegen’s underpants,” the former Fox News host tweeted Monday (May 1). “And her smug elitism.”

In her SiriusXM show, Kelly also blasted Teigen for having “minions” carry the train of her “nonexistent” dress. But Legend told TMZ of the commentator, “She can just shut up.”

As for whether his wife actually deserves to be called “elitist,” Legend said that Teigen is actually “very kind, very loving, very down to earth.” And as to whether she feel bad for having helpers on hand to make sure her dress didn’t drag on the ground?

“No, why should she?” replied the musician, who agreed that getting help from assistants just comes with the territory of making public appearances as a celebrity.

Kiss Guitarist Paul Stanley Walks Back His Comments on Gender-Affirming Care

He may have sung that he wanted to “rock and roll all night and party every day,” but Kiss singer-guitarist Paul Stanley‘s last few days have been pretty lacking in the “party” department.

After making factually inaccurate comments via Twitter about gender-affirming care for minors earlier this week, Stanley walked back his original statement on Thursday (May 4). “While my thoughts were clear, my words clearly were not,” he wrote.

In his original statement, Stanley forwarded misinformation about gender-affirming care for youths, saying that “irreversible” procedures shouldn’t be performed on children (despite the facts saying that the vast majority of this kind of care is reversible and often medically necessary for trans kids). “There is a BIG difference between teaching acceptance and normalizing and even encouraging participation in a lifestyle that confuses young children into questioning their sexual identification,” Stanley wrote.

But in his new statement, he focused on those currently undergoing the transition process, expressing his admiration for their bravery in being themselves. “Most importantly and above all else, I support those struggling with their sexual identity while enduring constant hostility and those whose path leads them to reassignment surgery,” he said. “It’s hard to fathom the kind of conviction that one must feel to take those steps.”

Closing his new statement, Stanley opted not to clarify his original statement, insisting that social media may not be the best place for genuine discourse. “A paragraph or two will remain far too short to fully convey my thoughts or point of view, so I will leave that for another time and place,” he wrote.

‘Drag Race’ Star Shangela Denies Rape Allegations: ‘It Has No Basis in Fact or in Law’

RuPaul’s Drag Race and We’re Here star Shangela has denied allegations in a civil suit filed by a former production assistant on the latter series claiming that the drag star (born Darius Jeremy “DJ” Pierce) drugged and raped him after a 2020 wrap party.

“I can’t begin to explain how hurt and disgusted I am by these totally untrue allegations. They are personally offensive and perpetuate damaging stereotypes that are harmful not only to me, but also to my entire community,” Pierce said in a statement to Billboard on Friday (May 5).

The statement came in reaction to a civil suit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday in which Daniel McGarrigle, a We’re Here production assistant, claimed that Pierce sexually assaulted him in February 2020 after a wrap party for the fifth episode of the HBO reality series featuring several Drag Race contestants, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“An external investigation into this embittered individual’s claims previously concluded that they were completely without merit,” Pierce continued in the statement. The performer added of the new filing, “No one should be fooled: It has no basis in fact or in law, and it will not succeed.”

Pierce added, “As a hardworking and outspoken drag entertainer for more than a decade, I know that I am far from alone in battling ignorance, bigotry and prejudice, all of which played a role in the filing of this complaint. That is why I will fight this entirely meritless lawsuit and not allow it to destroy me and those I love, or harm the causes we all stand for.”

According to THR, McGarrigle alleges in the suit that during party at a Ruston, La., restaurant/bar, Pierce was “heavily flirtatious” with him and bought him several drinks before allegedly suggesting that McGarrigle accompany him to his hotel to help get ready for an early flight. The suit then claims that McGarrigle vomited in the toilet after arriving in Pierce’s room, at which point the performer reportedly offered to get him water and let him lie down until he felt better.

The production assistant claims in the lawsuit he woke up later that evening to a cold liquid that “burned his eyes and nose” being poured on him that was described as a kind of “poppers” (aka amyl nitrite) before Pierce allegedly pulled down his pants and “overpowered” him.

In a separate statement shared with Billboard from producers Buckingham Television and HBO, the representatives for the series said, “Buckingham Television, the production company for We’re Here, received a complaint late summer 2021 regarding an incident that was alleged to have occurred in early 2020. Buckingham and HBO take the safety and well-being of personnel on our shows very seriously, and Buckingham immediately launched an investigation. The investigation concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support these allegations.”

The suit claims that the alleged rape was an act of gender violence, and that McGarrigle suffered damages as a result, including “past and future medical expenses, past and future lost earnings and earning capacity, pain, suffering, emotional distress, mental anguish and embarrassment.” The legal action is seeking unspecified damages from Pierce and Buckingham.
