Ariana Grande Surprises Fans at R.E.M. Beauty Pop-Up in NYC: ‘Today Made My Heart So Happy’

Fans went into Ariana Grande‘s R.E.M. pop-up shop in New York City thinking that they were just going to get ice cream, but walked out with an even sweeter surprise.

After spending months abroad in London filming for Jon M. Chu’s Wicked adaptations, the 30-year-old pop star made an unexpected stateside public appearance Tuesday (Aug. 29) for her beauty company’s new foundation line celebration at Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream shop in Greenwich Village. The star hid behind the store’s counter until fans entered, then popped up to say hi when they were least suspecting it.

“What can we get you?” she says casually to an unsuspecting fan, who lets out a scream, in a video posted to Grande’s TikTok.

“today made my heart so happy,” the singer-actress captioned another TikTok video of her hugging a couple of tearful fans. “i can’t wait to share more soon but for now… just this. i’ve watched 100 times. thank you for coming to our @r.e.m. beauty ice cream shoppe ! it will be open til Thursday !”

Grande also shared a clip of her waving out her car window to a sea of fans on her Instagram Story, writing, “love you please be careful omg i’m sorry i opened window [sic.] i just wanted to say hello”

The surprise meet-and-greet comes in honor of R.E.M. Beauty’s new Sweetener Foundation line, named after the “God Is a Woman” singer’s Grammy-winning 2018 album. At the Sweetener Shoppe, fans were able to have their skin tone matched to a shade of Grande’s foundation, enjoy complimentary ice cream and snag limited edition merch.

The pop-up also comes as Grande continues celebrating the 10th anniversary of her debut album, Yours Truly. In the past week, she’s shared a series of live performances of songs on the 2013 record, old footage and Q&A videos, all supporting the Aug. 25 release of her Yours Truly special anniversary edition.

ATEEZ Reflects on ‘Outlaw’ Hitting No. 1 on Top Album Sales Chart, Viral ‘Bouncy’ Challenge & More

2023 has been a packed year for the boys of ATEEZ. The K-pop group — which consists of members Hong Joong, Seong Hwa, Yun Ho, Yeo Sang, San, Min Gi, Woo Young and Jong Ho — recently went No. 1 on Billboard‘s Top Album Sales chart with its Outlaw EP, hit up this year’s KCON LA for a headlining performance and are about to embark on a series of tour dates in Latin America. In between the group’s stacked schedule, the K-pop stars stopped by Billboard News to discuss their latest career highlights.

Host Tetris Kelly kicked off the interview congratulating the group for the Outlaw EP’s success (the set also peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200), and asked the members their thoughts on why it had such positive reception.

“I think this era is a whole different ATEEZ, so that why many ATINY [the group’s fan name] and many audience wanna get some new piece of our album,” Hong Joon mused. “After we got a high number on the chart, we had pressure also, but we try to enjoy these days. We try to have a good mindset to make new songs. After debut, we try to put something deeper into it, like a new genre of music.”

K-pop has become one of the most popular genres of music in the last few years, and as a result, ATEEZ’s rise comes at the right time. Min Gi reflected on this shift and noted “there’s a growing change as K-pop is becoming more widely accepted by the general public despite the language differences.”

The shift has also led to the expansion of ATINY. The group recently mobilized across the world to perform flash mobs of the group’s single “Bouncy” in public spaces, with many of the videos going viral across social media.

“I think the only people that can really capture the ATEEZ energy are our ATINY, so seeing them follow along with our dance was really fascinating,” Yun Ho said of the dance videos. “It made me want to set more cool choreographies that we can do together in the future.”

Up next for the group is the continuation of its The Fellowship: Break The Wall tour. The trek continues on Aug. 30 with a stop in Santiago, Chile, and will visit Bogota, Singapore and Manila next month.

Hozier’s ‘Unreal Unearth’ Debuts at No. 1 on Top Rock & Alternative Albums Chart

Hozier’s new album, Unreal Unearth, launches at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts dated Sept. 2.

The set earned 62,000 equivalent album units in the Aug. 18-24 tracking week, according to Luminate. That opening-week sum includes 39,000 units from album sales; with 23,000 in vinyl sales, the set also starts at No. 2 on Vinyl Albums.

Unreal Unearth is Hozier’s third No. 1 on all three charts, encompassing each of his full-lengths. He first reigned with his self-titled debut in 2014, followed by Wasteland, Baby! in 2019.

Concurrently, Unreal Unearth begins at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard 200. All of his LPs have reached the top three, with Wasteland, Baby! debuting at No. 1 and Hozier premiering at No. 2.

The entirety of Unreal Unearth has appeared on the multimetric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, including 15 of the album’s 16 songs on the latest tally. (Lead single “Eat Your Young” peaked at No. 6 in April and has since gone recurrent.) The album’s “Damage Gets Done,” co-billed with Brandi Carlile, is the highest ranking cut on the latest list, new at No. 21 with 2.5 million official U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads sold.

“Francesca,” the album’s second and current single, follows at No. 22 with 2.3 million streams (up 317%) and 1.4 million radio audience impressions (up 14%). The song spends a second week at its No. 3 high on Adult Alternative Airplay; predecessor “Eat Your Young” ruled Adult Alternative Airplay for two weeks in May.

“Eat Your Young” also peaked at No. 13 on Alternative Airplay in June and made a modest crossover to adult top 40 radio, reaching No. 32 on Adult Pop Airplay that month.

The song, along with being her newest single, serves as the title track for her new album Tension, due out on Sept. 22. With her latest single “Padam Padam,” Minogue certainly drove interest in her new project. Yhe pounding club track earned the pop singer her very first top 10 hit on Billboard‘s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart after going viral throughout the summer.

Minogue also recently announced that once her new album is officially out, she’ll be heading to Las Vegas for what she promised would be “More Than Just a Residency,” according to its title. Kicking off on Nov. 3 at Venetian Resort Las Vegas’ Voltaire, tickets to the pop star’s first-ever residency have already sold out.

The “Locomotion” singer also recently announced her upcoming TV special, An Audience With Kylie, which will see the star look back through her greatest hits during a performance at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall. The special is set to film at the iconic venue on Dec. 1, and subsequently air on ITV in the U.K.

Watch One Direction Cover Kelly Clarkson’s ‘My Life Would Suck Without You’ in New ‘X Factor’ Footage

Suddenly, it’s 2010 again. Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan‘s very first moments together as One Direction were revealed Wednesday morning (Aug. 30) in nearly 30 minutes of never-before-aired X Factor footage, showing the then-teenagers getting put through the ringer by Simon Cowell during the early Judges’ Houses stage of the competition show that made them stars.

The footage features raw shots of the five boys practicing their make-or-break performances together, including a previously unreleased group cover of Kelly Clarkson’s “My Life Would Suck Without You” for Cowell. When their passionate, albeit rough-around-the-edges audition earns the band — already unified under the name One Direction — a pass into the next round, Styles, Payne, Tomlinson, Malik and Horan tearfully jump for joy and exchange several group hugs.

At one particularly prophetic point in the video, Cowell wisely predicts that the group will have a “falling out” or two in the future. “You will, trust me,” he tells them.

One Direction would go on to win third place on the British competition series, after which the group quickly released its debut single, “What Makes You Beautiful,” under Cowell’s mentorship. After five years, multiple Billboard Hot 100 hits and four Billboard 200 No. 1 albums, Malik would make his departure from the band in 2015. The next year, the remaining four went on hiatus.

All five of the guys went on to pursue solo careers following their boy-band days, and everyone seems to be on good terms with each other in 2023. True to Cowell’s prediction, though, there were a handful of spats along the way.

The new X Factor footage comes about a year after the show released decade-old video evidence proving that it had actually been Nicole Scherzinger to put the members of One Direction together — not Cowell, as many had believed for years. The assembly of 1D actually saved the guys from elimination, taking their failed solo auditions and sending them forward as a band.

“They’re just too talented to get rid of,” Scherzinger said at the time, piecing the group together based on a pool of headshots of male hopefuls. “They’ve got just the right look and the right charisma onstage. I think they’ll be really great in a boy band together. They’re like little stars. You can’t get rid of little stars, you know? So you put ’em all together.”

Drake Vancouver Show Postponed at Last Minute Due to ‘Unforeseen Consequences’ Tied toNew Video Display

Fans were already lined up to enter Rogers Arena in Vancouver on Monday night (Aug. 28) for the first of two shows from Drake when they were informed that the gig had been postponed. “Due to unforeseen circumstances with the newly-installed videoboard at Rogers Arena, tonight’s Drake performance will now take place on Wednesday, August 30,” read a statement from the venue.

The post noted that all tickets for Monday’s show will be honored tonight and that the gig scheduled for Tuesday night (Aug. 29) would go on as planned. “Drake was ready and excited to perform. He is looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday and Wednesday. Rogers Arena apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause,” it continued.

On Sunday, the arena encouraged fans not to arrive earlier than 8 a.m. on Monday to queue up for general admission entry. Just hours before Monday’s planned gig, the venue posted video of a merch tent outside the arena, encouraging fans to show up early to snag some swag before the show. A spokesperson for Drake could not be reached for comment at press time.

Drake has been walking to the stage through the audience during his It’s All a Blur tour dates, and on Tuesday night he was joined by Lil Yachty on his stroll, as well as Travis Scott. The latter subbed in for the tour’s opener, 21 Savage, on Tuesday night, with the dynamic duo teaming up for the live debut of their collab from Scott’s Utopia album, “Meltdown,” as well as Scott’s Astroworld smash “Sicko Mode.”

Investigation Finds Late Johnny & Associates Founder Johnny Kitagawa Sexually Assaulted Hundreds of Teens

A team investigating sexual assault allegations by the late founder of a powerful talent agency for boy bands has found the charges credible, calling Tuesday (Aug. 29) for compensation for the victims and the resignation of the current chief executive.

The three-month probe, which included speaking with 23 victims, concluded that Johnny Kitagawa sexually assaulted and abused boys as far back as the 1950s and targeted at least several hundred people.

The investigative panel said Johnny & Associates must apologize, strengthen compliance measures and educate its ranks about human rights. Julie Keiko Fujishima, the chief executive, must resign for not taking action over the years, according to the special team. Kitagawa died in 2019 and was never charged.

“The company’s coverup led to the sexual abuse continuing unchecked for so long,” investigative team leader Makoto Hayashi told reporters in Tokyo. “There were many opportunities to take action.”

Critics say what happened at Johnny’s, as the Tokyo-based company is known, highlights Japan’s lagging awareness about rape, sexual harassment and human rights. Public opinion has often been unsympathetic toward people who say they were targeted by sexual predators.

In the Johnny’s case, about a dozen men have come forward in recent months to allege sexual abuse by Kitagawa, the agency’s founder, while performing as teens. More people are expected to come forward, the report said.

Fujishima has so far only apologized in a brief online video for “disappointment and worries ” over the case. It is unclear whether she will resign. The company in a statement reiterated its earlier apology and promise to hold a news conference, once it had studied the team’s report.

While rumors of abuse at Johnny’s circulated over the years and several tell-all books have been published, Japan’s mainstream media remained silent. Kitagawa began his management career with the teen boy band the Johnnys before founding Johnny & Associates in 1962, which spawned a series of “idol” groups including SMAP and Arashi.

Serious questions resurfaced this year after BBC News produced a special segment focused on several people who claimed to be Kitagawa’s victims. Another turning point came earlier this month when the U.N. Working Group on Business and Human Rights urged the Japanese government to take action. The group also accused Japan’s mainstream media of what it called “a cover-up.”

According to the allegations, Kitagawa asked fledgling singers and dancers, many of them children, to stay at his luxury home. When he told one of them to go to bed early, everyone knew it was “your turn,” those who have spoken up told the panel.

The boys were raped by Kitagawa when they were 14 or 15 and given 10,000 yen (about $100) bills afterward, the report said. It added that the victims feared they would be penalized if they refused. It recommends more people come forward, promises that their privacy will be protected and that no material evidence of a sexual attack will be required.

Those who have spoken out say they have been painfully traumatized, unable to tell anyone, even family, and still suffer flashbacks and depression, the report said.

Billie Eilish Supercharges Electric Ballroom Show in London With Surprise Guests Boygenius, Labrinth

What a difference a few days make. After rocking more than 170,000 during her headlining sets at the Reading and Leeds Festivals over the weekend, Billie Eilish took things way, way down on Tuesday night (Aug. 29) for an intimate club gig at the 1,500-capacity Electric Ballroom in London.

The lucky fans who snagged tickets to the show at the legendary venue in Camden that was formerly an Irish dance hall and roller disco — and which has hosted everyone from Prince to U2 and Paul McCartney over the years — got more than they bargained for when Billie brought out two very special guests.

Eilish invited the members of boygenius — Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus — out to provide harmonies for “When the Party’s Over” almost a year after Bridgers joined Billie in Los Angeles for a run through Bridgers’ “Motion Sickness.” Eilish also invited Labrinth up for a run through their song “Never Felt So Alone,” which the singer/rapper/producer released earlier this year.

The guest spots capped a pretty epic week across the pond for the 21-year-old singer, who also lead a historic chart lineup in the U.K. when her Barbie soundtrack ballad, “What Was I Made For?” logged its first week at No. 1 on the singles chart. In a Barbie chart showdown, Eilish’s song beat out Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” for the top spot, marking her second No. 1 on the English tally following 2020’s Grammy, Golden Globe and Oscar-winning James Bond theme song “No Time to Die.”

Steel Panther Rocks The House With ‘Death to All But Metal’ on ‘AGT’: Watch

Got spandex? Tick. Got pyrotechnics? Tick. Got your vote? Wait and see.

Steel Panther isn’t the type of group to simply perform on a stage. When they appeared live on America’s Got Talent on Tuesday night (Aug. 29), they rocked it.

Led by Ralph “Michael Starr” Saenz, the throwback heavy metal band from Hollywood, CA isn’t everyone’s favorite flavor, but here they are, crashing the live qualifiers alongside dance troupes, magicians, comedians, acrobats, singers and more.

For their latest performance, the four-piece blasted “Death to All But Metal” from 2009’s Feel the Steel — and admittedly tweaked some of its provocative lyrics.

Formed in 2000, the band has landed six titles on the Billboard 200 chart, and they’re using their run on AGT to drum-up excitement for their sixth and most recent full-length album On the Prowl, which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Comedy Albums chart in March of this year.

The big hair, the heavy makeup, the loud everything, it was a hit with the AGT audience – and the judges.

“Look at this room — everyone on their feet, everyone screaming,” Heidi Klum told the band afterwards. “I love how you rocked the stage,” she added, “you sound amazing, especially the high note. Everyone was on it. Well done.”

Sofia Vergara remarked, “I’m super excited for you guys. I think America is going to love you”.

Simon Cowell pulled out his old familiar tune: “I didn’t like it, I loved it.” He then took a more serious tone, remarking, “you take yourselves seriously because you’ve done this for a long time and it shows, and you don’t take yourselves seriously which is what I like (about you).” The Brit continued, “I know we’re early on in the season, this has been my favorite live show act so far.”

Steel Panther was the 10th performer on the night. Only two can progress. It’s a tough equation to crack. Howie Mandel is a fan. “In my books, you guys are top 10.”

Harold Childs, ‘Consummate Record Man,’ Dead at 80

Harold Childs, who broke through industry barriers in the ‘70s as a Black man overseeing pop music promotion at A&M Records, died of leukemia in Los Angeles on Sunday, Aug. 27. He was 80 years old. Childs’ death follows that of A&M co-founder Jerry Moss, who died Aug. 16.

Known for his innate business savvy, vibrant personality and dapper style, Childs spent more than 50 years in a music career that included tenures with RCA Victor, Qwest Records and Warner Bros. Records.

“He was a consummate ‘Record Man,’” Direct Management co-founder Martin Kirkup tells Billboard of Childs, a longtime friend and fellow A&M alumnus. “I was vp of artist development from 1975-85 and worked with Harold for most of that decade. He was passionate about the wide range of music that A&M embraced, with great instincts for the tactics and strategy of breaking records. But what really made him special was his personal warmth, good humor and his endless interest in other people. That’s why people were so devoted to him.”

Ray Harris, founder and chairman emeritus of the Living Legends Foundation, worked with Childs at Warner Bros. where the former served as the label’s senior vp of Black music promotion. Sharing his memories of Childs with Billboard, Harris says, “They say your name and reputation will reach a stranger’s door before you do. It was such with Harold Childs. When I entered the music business in the ‘70s, Harold was one of the people I would constantly hear about. He worked at one of the hottest independent labels [A&M] as vp of promotion in charge of the pop department as well as other genres of music.

“That was unique,” adds Harris, “because Harold was an African American male navigating through a pop world normally carved out for our white counterparts. There was very few African Americans moving in that world during that period. Childs not only moved in it, he was a dominant part of that company’s success. I got to know Harold and found him to be classy, fashion-forward, professional and a nice guy. Sleep well my friend, you’ve made your mark.”

Born May 8, 1943 in Philadelphia, Childs was a student at the city’s Dobbins High School when he began working in the stock room at Marnel Record Distributors. He later segued to RCA Victor as regional promotion manager where he worked with artists such as Peter Nero and Henry Mancini. Then in 1969 he joined A&M as national sales and promotion director for its CTI (Creed Taylor International) imprint, based in New York.

Relocating to Los Angeles in 1971, Childs retained his same role for A&M solely after CTI became independent. During his subsequent appointments as vp of promotion in 1974 and senior vp of promotion and sales in 1978, Childs played an integral role in A&M’s evolution as one of the industry’s leading independent labels in the ‘70s and ‘80s. He and his team broke projects from the Carpenters, Cat Stevens, Captain & Tennille, Peter Frampton, Supertramp, the Brothers Johnson, Styx, Joe Jackson, the Police, the Human League and George Harrison’s A&M-distributed Dark Horse label.

Leaving A&M in 1984, Childs joined PolyGram as senior vp and then served as president of Quincy Jones’ Qwest Records at the latter’s request. During a later stint at Warner Bros. Records, Childs headed the label’s jazz promotion department, working with a roster that included Al Jarreau, David Sanborn and George Benson, who began his career at CTI.

Ed Eckstein, former president of Mercury Records, described being mentored by Childs as “a godsend and a blessing to say the least. I got to see firsthand — during my years working with Quincy Jones — [Childs’] unique field general, fearless-leader style of leadership; the level of respect he received from his troops and associates, coupled with the results he accrued, was awe inspiring. Harold was smart, incisive, sharp, demanding, funny, fair and the Essence of Sartorial Splendor at all times.”

Childs’ resumé includes serving as senior consultant for Soundboard Marketing. The Los Angeles-based company has collaborated with brands such as Paul Mitchell Salons as well as Timothy B. Schmidt of the Eagles, Ray Parker Jr. and producer Patrick Leonard. Childs was also a consultant for Japanese-based Alpha Records, working as its U.S. liaison in a sales and promotion capacity. The Living Legends Foundation presented Childs with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.

Donations in memory of Harold Childs may be made to The United Negro College Fund.
