Maren Morris Says She’s Leaving Country Music: ‘It’s Burning Itself Down Without My Help’

Grammy winner Maren Morris released two new songs — “The Tree” and “Get the Hell Out of Here” — on Friday (Sept. 15). With them, she also shared the nuanced emotions behind her decision to leave country music and her feelings about the socio-political divide that has deepened over the past several years.

“These two songs are incredibly key to my next step because they express a very righteously angry and liberating phase of my life these last couple of years, but also how my navigation is finally pointing towards the future, whatever that may be or sound like,” she said in a statement. “Honoring where I’ve been and what I’ve achieved in country music, but also freely moving forward.”

On “The Tree,” she sings, “The rot at the roots is the root of the problem/ But you want to blame it on me.” She adds on “Get the Hell Out of Here”: “I hung around longer than anyone should/ You’ve broken my heart more than anyone could.”

She went into detail about her decision in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, sharing that the growing sociopolitical divide within country music — and the right-leaning views of some of the genre’s artists and fans — has been an ongoing challenge and barrier.

“After the Trump years, people’s biases were on full display,” Morris told the paper. “It just revealed who people really were and that they were proud to be misogynistic and racist and homophobic and transphobic. All these things were being celebrated, and it was weirdly dovetailing with this hyper-masculine branch of country music. I call it butt rock.”

“I thought I’d like to burn it to the ground and start over,” she added. “But it’s burning itself down without my help.”

Morris — who graced the cover of Billboard’s Pride issue alongside drag stars — has also been one of the fiercest advocates for diversity, inclusion and progress within the country music genre, championing greater inclusion of voices and music from women, members of the LGBTQ+ community and artists of color. When she won a CMA Award for female vocalist of the year in 2020, Morris used her acceptance speech to honor women of color within country music. She performed at the Love Rising concert in Nashville earlier this year, an event that celebrated the LGBTQ+ community and challenged anti-trans legislation in Tennessee. Last year, Morris also had a war of words with Jason Aldean and his wife, Brittany, over gender-affirming care.

Morris’ move away from the genre comes as four country songs, including Aldean’s controversial “Try That in a Small Town,” have topped the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

“I think it’s a last bastion,” Morris said of the consumption of “Try That in a Small Town.” “People are streaming these songs out of spite. It’s not out of true joy or love of the music. It’s to own the libs. And that’s so not what music is intended for. Music is supposed to be the voice of the oppressed — the actual oppressed. And now it’s being used as this really toxic weapon in culture wars.”

Morris noted that she did not initially consider herself a political artist — merely an artist writing songs about the happenings in the world around her. “But the further you get into the country music business, that’s when you start to see the cracks,” she pointed out. “And once you see it, you can’t unsee it. So you start doing everything you can with the little power you have to make things better. That doesn’t make you popular.”

She went on to say why she thinks it’s necessary to speak up. “If you truly love this type of music and you start to see problems arise, it needs to be criticized,” Morris told the paper. “Anything this popular should be scrutinized if we want to see progress. But I’ve kind of said everything I can say. I always thought I’d have to do middle fingers in the air jumping out of an airplane, but I’m trying to mature here and realize I can just walk away from the parts of this that no longer make me happy.”

Morris noted that she is “still unraveling” a lot of her feelings of connection with country music.

“I don’t want to have an adversarial relationship to country music,” she added. “I still find myself weirdly wanting to protect it. But it’s not a family member. That’s the f–ked-up part, is that I’m talking about it as if it’s a person, but it’s not. So it’s a lot of deep deconstructing that I’m still unraveling.

“These songs are obviously the result of that — the aftermath of walking away from something that was really important to you and the betrayal that you felt very righteously. But also knowing there’s a thread of hope as you get to the other side,” Morris continued. “I hope it comes across that way because I truly was in a space of hope when I wrote the two songs, even though ‘Get the Hell Out of Here’ is really heavy. It’s about disarming that trauma and saying, ‘I can’t bail water out of this sinking ship anymore. It’s so futile. I choose happiness.’”

Anitta Opens Up About Terrifying Cancer Scare: ‘Nobody Could Figure Out What I Had’

Anitta is shedding light on a scary experience she had at the end of 2022.

The Brazilian superstar revealed to InStyle this week that she had been visiting the hospital for “months” with a cancer scare, with fear being fueled by doctors struggling to figure out what was wrong. “I had problems in my lungs, I had a cancer [scare]. I spent months in the hospital. Nobody could figure out what I had,” she explained, noting that she took multiple tests with no result.

Eventually, she sought spiritual treatment from a shaman recommended to her, and the healing she received there worked. “I came back completely changed,” she explained, adding that when the doctors ran more tests, she was healed.

Her new song “Used to Be” was born as a result of the emotional experience, as she leans into her “bitch” persona who “destroys hearts” along the way. “I used to be a hoe, but now I ain’t no more / Been swimmin’ through the water, now I’m back to shore / I look at who I did and I’m like, ‘Oh, my lord,’” she sings in the opening lines of the track.

Anitta performed the track at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday (Sept. 12), along with “Funk Rave,” both of which are featured on her latest release, Funk Generation: A Favela Love Story. “Being an international artist is not only about being famous wherever you go, because the world is so big,” Anitta told Billboard last year. “It’s about being able to impact culturally different areas at the same time.”

Doja Cat Continues Teasing ‘Scarlet’ With New ‘Balut’ Single: Stream It Now

“Remember this, girls,” rings the intro of Doja Cat’s latest new track. “None of you can be first, but all of you can be next.”

The intro — lifted from professional wrestler Ric Flair — heralds the beginning of “Balut,” the final song on the star’s upcoming new album Scarlet and its most recent single. The track features production contributions from Yeti Beats, Roget Chahyed and Kurtis McKenzie. The latter two creatives, alongside Doja and Y2K, also have writing credits on the laidback rap track.

“Balut” marks the fourth single from Scarlet. Doja first introduced the world of her fourth studio album with “Attention,” a boom-bap-leaning hip-hop track that debuted and peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. A Dionne Warwick-sampling pop-rap track entitled “Paint the Town Red” soon followed as the album’s first radio single, reaching No. 1 on the Hot 100 this week (chart dated Sept. 16, 2023). On Sept. 1, Doja then unleashed “Demons,” a raucous punk-rap track that boasted a chilling horror-themed music video starring Emmy-nominated Yellowjackets actress Christina Ricci.

The release of “Balut” comes the same week as Doja’s star-turn 2023 MTV Video Music Awards performance, in which she delivered a show-stopping medley of “Attention,” “Paint the Town Red” and “Demons.” At Tuesday night’s ceremony (Sept. 12), “Attention” won the Moonperson for best art direction.

Scarlet is slated for a Sept. 22 release with an accompanying headlining arena tour to follow. The Scarlet Tour kicks off on Oct. 31 at Chase Center in San Francisco, CA, with special guests Ice Spice and Doechii.

Jeezy Files for Divorce From Jeannie Mai

After two and a half years of marriage, Jeezy has filed for divorce from his wife and former TV host Jeannie Mai, Billboard can confirm.

The rapper filed the petition on Thursday (Sept. 14) at Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution — who was first to break the news — reported that the pair have a prenup in place, and that he’s seeking joint custody of their 1-year-old daughter, Monaco.

According to the document viewed by Billboard, the filing states that the former pair are “currently living in a bona fide state of separation.” The rapper also states that the marriage is “irretrievably broken” with “no hope for reconciliation.”

Billboard has reached out to Jeezy’s and Mai’s reps for comment.

The two met in 2018 during Mai’s time on The Real, but remained mum regarding their dating status. Then, the couple confirmed they were dating in 2019, and revealed their engagement the following year. Because of the tight COVID-19 restrictions, they shifted their wedding from France to their Georgia home in 2021, where they held an intimate ceremony.

“We were really looking forward to having all of our friends and family there to celebrate,” Mai told Vogue in April 2021. “But we had to change all of our wedding plans due to COVID. After Jeezy’s mother unexpectedly passed, we quickly learned that life is too short. And at the end of the day, Jeezy and I really just wanted to become husband and wife. So we decided to turn our original wedding into a mini-mony, where we exchanged our vows in front of our immediate family and a few close friends.”

At the top of 2022, Jeezy and Mae welcomed their first child. “I asked God for a life of love and happiness. He sent me my family,” Mai announced Instagram at the time. “Baby Jenkins is here.”

Here’s Why *NSYNC’s ‘Trolls’ Song Promotion Doesn’t Break Hollywood Strike Rules

*NSYNC set Tuesday night’s 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on fire when they reunited during the broadcast and presented Taylor Swift with the best pop Moon Person for her Midnights hit “Anti-Hero.” The group — consisting of Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass — spent their time onstage reminiscing about their MTV salad days, basking in the glow of the adoring audience, and getting some serious love from a gobsmacked Swift.

But after Swift admitted she was “not doing well” pivoting from hugging her childhood pop crushes to accepting the award, she also said the thing that was probably on everyone else’s mind: “Are you doing something? What’s going to happen now?”

And then… nothing else happened.

The timing of the reunion was fitting, since less than 48 hours later, *NSYNC announced their first new song since 2002, “Better Place,” their boppy contribution to the upcoming Trolls Band Together threequel starring Timberlake; the song is due Sept. 29. In the lead-up to the awards show, longtime fans were freaking out over posters around New York that appeared to tease the iconic *NSYNC logo that led to this site. That led to rampant speculation that, as Swift suggested, “something” would happen during the prime VMA spot at the top of the nearly four-hour program.

The band did not, however, mention the movie, nor the song, during their appearance, which came in the midst of the the ongoing Hollywood writers and actors strike that began in May when members of the Writers Guild of America walked out, followed by SAG-AFTRA members joining them in July, effectively shutting down Hollywood.

*NSYNC did end up promoting the song in an Instagram post first shared on JT’s feed Thursday (Sept. 14), in which the quintet shared their emotional studio reunion (though there were no tags relating to the film, soundtrack or studio on the post). “So many stars aligned, that’s why I hit y’all,” Timberlake tells his bandmates in the video. “If we do this song, it’s a love letter to our fans. I would be honored to have the group on this song. Who’s ready for a reunion?” The clip then shifts to Timberlake behind the boards giving the rest of the group direction on their vocal tracks while recording his own vocals.

The post begged the question: Did *NYSNC break the rules regarding the promotion of movies and/or soundtracks during the strike?

Earlier this summer, SAG-AFTRA chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland broke down the strike rules about promotion of new or previously completed projects, noting that artists are expected to avoid promoting music created for TV, film or streaming under the old contract during the strike.

“Musicians who are members of SAG-AFTRA are equally subject to the rules around the strike — we cover vocalists in the music industry, as well as vocalists in the film/TV/streaming side and some broadcast journalists — and when any member is working on a project as an actor, then the rules mean that they are not in a position to promote that project, even if they are more generally known as a singer or recording artist,” Duncan Crabtree-Ireland previously told Billboard.

At the time, however, Crabtree-Ireland also said that members cannot enter into any new music licensing agreements or approve any new tracks for film or TV projects and must cease promoting songs already licensed for the duration of the strike.

However, when reached following the VMAs — without specifically mentioning the band or the song — a spokesperson for SAG-AFTRA told Billboard in a statement that: “While some songs are made for a movie under our Theatrical CBA, others are made under our Sound Recording Contract and acquired via a license deal. Songs that are not made under our Theatrical CBA are not subject to the strike order and promotional rules.”

At press time, spokespeople for Timberlake and Trolls studio DreamWorks Animation could not be reached for comment on the promotion of the song, though a source confirmed to Billboard that the track was covered under the Sound Recording Contract.

The 2023 VMAs were noticeably light on the usual parade of A-list and up-and-coming Hollywood actors taking the stage to introduce acts or musicians plugging their latest acting gigs as promotion has ground to a dead halt while the dual strike by actors and writers enters the fall with no end in sight.

The *NSYNC exception is different from the one governing Swift’s recent announcement and promotion of her Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour concert film. After that project was announced, a source close to the film confirmed to Billboard that the Eras doc obtained clearance under an interim agreement struck by SAG-AFTRA covering individual non-AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) productions that meet the same standards the unions are seeking in their negotiations with the studios; the source added that the clearance was nailed down before the Eras doc was shot in Inglewood, California, during the first three nights of the singer’s six-night run at SoFi Stadium.

Billboard also confirmed that the Swift film is included under an assumed name on the list of approved interim agreement projects.

For now, it’s unclear how much, if any, further promotion *NSYNC will do for the song that appears in Trolls Band Together, in which Timberlake’s Branch reunites with his brothers to get their childhood boy band, BroZone, back together. Though *NSYNC got back together to record the song — and fans are predictably freaking out — in the film, Timberlake’s bandmate brothers are voiced by Troye SivanEric AndréDaveed Diggs and Kid Cudi.

Gunna nabs his third No. 1 on Billboard’s Rhythmic Airplay chart with “Fukumean,” which vaults from No. 4 to the top of the tally dated Sept. 23.

It’s the rapper’s first unaccompanied No. 1 on the chart. He first reigned as featured on Chris Brown’s “Heat” in November 2019, followed by “Lemonade,” a co-bill with Internet Money and featuring Don Toliver and Nav, in November 2020.

In between “Lemonade” and “Fukumean,” Gunna rose as high as No. 4 on Rhythmic Airplay with “Pushin P” with Future and featuring Young Thug in April 2022.

The coronation of “Fukumean” on Rhythmic Airplay follows the song’s ascents to No. 1 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and Rap Airplay; it leads each list for a second week.

On the most recently published, multimetric Billboard Hot 100 (dated Sept. 16), “Fukumean” placed at No. 9, following its No. 4 peak in August. In addition to its radio airplay, the song earned 19.7 million official U.S. streams and sold 1,000 downloads in the Sept. 1-7 tracking week, according to Luminate. It also topped the multimetric Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rap Songs charts for five weeks each, beginning in July, having become Gunna’s first No. 1 on each ranking.

“Fukumean” is the second radio single from A Gift & a Curse, Gunna’s fourth LP. The set debuted at No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart dated July 1 and has earned 474,000 equivalent album units to date.

All Billboard charts dated Sept. 23 will refresh on Billboard.com on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

V Takes the Stage Solo for Laid Back ‘Blue’ Live Performance: Watch

V‘s Layover track “Blue” got the music video treatment earlier this week, showcasing the BTS member in black and white while he impatiently searched for someone at an apartment complex to no avail. The impatience from the video took a back seat in V’s live performance of “Blue” on Friday (Sept. 15) for Naver’s NPOP, but the black-and-white filter remained as he took the stage.

The stripped back showcase features V wearing a similar look to the one in the “Blue” video, consisting of a studded black leather jacket, matching black leather pants and a classic white T-shirt. The BTS vocalist takes the stage solo, with white smoke billowing on the floor around him and the lighting design resembling shards of glass.

“What if I show you/ And make it all new/ Green, yellow, red, blue/ Whatever seems good to you/ A day to the moon/ Like borrowed stars/ Everyone’s looking at you/ But, baby, you’re all blue, blue/ Blue, blue/ Blue, blue/ Blue, blue/ Blue, blue, blue,” the 27-year-old sings on the first verse and chorus.

The new performance of “Blue” comes amid the arrival of V’s Tiny Desk Korea set, where he performed a series of tracks from Layover on Sept. 14. His performance — a brief three songs — included album tracks “Love Me Again,” “Slow Dancing” and “For Us.”

Cardi B Takes Notes From Beyonce When It Comes to Handling Haters: ‘Every Artist Should Do What Works for Them’

Cardi B has never been one to hide how she feels or cower in fear of her haters. In a new interview with The Spout Podcast, the Grammy-winning “Up” rapper opens up about her approach to handling haters, and where she takes cues from Beyoncé’s example.

“Surprisingly, I have held myself back a lot … from a lot of things,” Cardi B shared. “You see how Beyoncé addresses her things — she does not address them at all. I feel like every artist should do what works for them and what’s good for they mental health because I feel like, if addressing things to Beyoncé affects her mental health, then don’t do it.”

From political spats with Candace Owens to beefs with fellow rappers such as Nicki Minaj, Cardi has always spoken her mind. Nonetheless, she understands that that approach does not work for everyone.

“But me, bottling things inside and let people, like, front certain narratives of me, it will bother me inside.  So, I’d rather just let it out,” she explained. “So, I feel like everybody should, like, address their issues however they feel like they’re going to be comfortable in doing. That’s how I feel, like, everybody is different.”

In the new interview, Cardi also touched on the release of “Bongos” and her friendship with Megan Thee Stallion, saying, “I know what it feels like when you feel like everybody, like, turned your back. Don’t ever think it’s because you did something wrong. You didn’t do anything wrong. People just love something to debate about.”

The pair performed “Bongos” — their first collaboration since 2020’s seismic “WAP” — at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday (Sept. 12).

Here’s What Jason Kelce Has to Say About Those Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce Dating Rumors

Over the past week, the rumor mill has been exploding with speculation that Eras Tour powerhouse Taylor Swift has spending some, allegedly romantic, time together with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. During a post-game interview on Thursday night (Sept. 14), Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, Travis’ older brother, shared his thoughts on all of the rumors.

“I’ve seen these rumors… I cannot comment,” Jason said, before noting that “everyone’s been infatuated with Travis’ love life” since his E! series Catching Kelce premiered in 2016. From 2017 to 2022, Travis dated social media influence Kayla Nicole.

“I don’t really know what’s going on there,” Jason remarked. “I know Trav is having fun, we’ll see what happens with whoever he ends up with.”

Travis and Taylor have been linked since July when the football star attended her Eras Tour stop at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium. On his New Heights podcast — which he hosts alongside his brother — Travis explained, “If you’re up on Taylor Swift concerts, there are friendship bracelets. I received a bunch of them being there, but I wanted to give Taylor Swift one with my number on it.”

Nonetheless, given that there aren’t meet and greets for the Eras Tour — and thus no opportunity to personally give Swift a friendship bracelet — Travis’ plan was foiled. “She doesn’t meet anybody, or at least she didn’t want to meet me, so I took it personal,” he joked. In response, Jason teased, “She probably just hasn’t gotten over the Super Bowl yet. She’s a big Eagles fan, so maybe she just made something up and didn’t want to talk to you.”

Stay tuned for more developments in this alleged football-music crossover romance, “Dear Reader.”
