Katy Perry, Madonna & More Musicians React to Deadly Hamas Attack on Israel

Stars such as Katy Perry, Madonna and more are speaking out following the Oct. 7 attack on Israel, leveraged by the militant group Hamas.

So far, the violence has resulted in the deaths of more than 700 Israelis (260 of which were killed at a local music festival) and has led Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order a “complete siege” of Gaza in retaliation, cutting off water, food, electricity and food to the territory from which the invasion was launched. Amid the deadly conflict, musicians including Katy Perry have made statements on social media to share their support and speak out on behalf of victims in both countries.

One day after the attack, the “Teenage Dream” singer shared a post from UNICEF to her Instagram account, featuring a statement from the organization’s executive director calling for peace in the name of children in both Israel and Palestine. “More than anything, the children of Israel and the State of Palestine need a lasting political solution to the crisis, so that they can grow up in peace and free from the shadow of violence,” it read.

Madonna, meanwhile, was one of the first major stars to speak out about the attacks, voicing support for Israel on her Instagram page. “Conflicts can never be resolved with violence,” the singer wrote. “Unfortunately Humanity does not understand this Universal truth. Has Never Understood it. We live in a World Ravaged by Hate. My heart goes out to Israel. To Families and Homes that have been destroyed. To children who are lost.”

Don McLean also shared his thoughts on the attack in a statement to Billboard. “It is hard for me to control the emotions I feel for Israel at this time,” the “American Pie” singer said. “Having lived in Israel, I remember the neighborhoods I now see being bombed. I knew the people who faced this kind of hatred every day and went to a party every night because life is something to celebrate and it is so precious. Being there changed me forever. I have lived in a different way ever since. I was proud to write the song ‘Jerusalem,’ for the Mayor of Jerusalem and I sing this song every night during shows. On this earth, Jerusalem is at the center of the atom of life and salvation no matter what might be going on anywhere else on the planet.”

Singer-actress Mandy Moore reshared comedian Alex Edelman’s post in her Stories, which read in part, “The murder of innocents is never acceptable. The desecration of corpses is never acceptable. The taking of children as hostages is never acceptable.”

Frozen star Josh Gad, who charted on the Billboard Hot 100 with “We Wish You the Merriest” alongside Idina Mendel, shared his heartbreak on Threads. “I have no words. I am praying for my many family members in Israel. What a cowardly act,” he wrote. “What we are witnessing in real time right now is unprecedented since the Yom Kippur war. My heart breaks for the families of those who have lost loved ones, and for the hostages who have been taken. What a horrific day.”

These stars are just some to react to the deadly attack, with U2, Diddy, Frozen‘s Josh Gad and more all posting statements of their own. Plus, Bruno Mars canceled his concert in Tel Aviv in light of the conflict.

Royel Otis, “Fried Rice” 

Last week, Australian pop duo Royel Otis announced its upcoming debut album Pratts & Pain, arriving in February 2024. Lead single “Fried Rice” captures an early-2000s indie pop-rock sound with lo-fi vocals layered under driving drums and a repeated riff, all of which combine for a hummable chorus in which the word “I” extends for three syllables across three notes. It’s easy to imagine this one soundtracking an episode of The O.C. – L.H.

Cosmo’s Midnight feat. Shungudzo, “Gimme Some More”

Twin brothers Cosmo and Patrick Liney comprise the Aussie electronic-pop duo Cosmo’s Midnight, and on the shimmering, feel-good “Gimme Some More,” they tapped singer Shungudzo to drive home the sentiment that “enough is not enough” when it comes to the person you love. A song as giddily fun as this demonstrates that sometimes there’s no such thing as too much of a good thing. – L.H. 

Jaden Hossler, “Chrome Hearted”

After teasing a name change and new musical direction on social media, the pop-punk artist formerly known as jxdn finally revealed what he’s been up to: released under his birth name Jaden Hossler, his new single “Chrome Hearted” is a trash-talking pop-trap song. Marian Hill, “You Were Always Sure”

Jazz undertones have always been present in Marian Hill’s sound, but new single “You Were Always Sure” sees the group amplifying those notes even further. Bad Bunny Reveals New Album Title and Release Date — and It’s Coming Really Soon

Just two weeks after releasing his latest reggaeton single “Un Preview” — and telling his more than 15 million followers on his WhatsApp Channel that “this is possibly the last song I release this year. It’s a little preview of what’s to come next year” — Bad Bunny announces his new studio album is dropping soon.  

On Monday (Oct. 9), the “Yo Perreo Sola” singer headed to his Instagram account, where he boasts nearly 50 million followers, to share the album title and release date. 

“The most anticipated day by many has arrived,” he captioned the promo video in which he’s seen swarmed by paparazzi before entering a fancy restaurant and being greeted by a gentleman who says, “Don Benito, it’s so nice to see you.” 

Bunny, looking dapper in a black suit, white sunglasses, and showing off his newly shaved head, smiles and shakes his hand, before the album title and date are revealed. 

The global Puerto Rican star — who won seven 2023 Billboard Latin Music Awards including artist of the year — first teased fans on his X account on Sunday (Oct. 8), revealing that 22 tracks are on the set. Next to each number is the word “Fuego,” hinting that each song is fire. This was the same strategy he used in May 2022 ahead of his Un Verano Sin Ti album release, when each number had the word “PALO” next to it, which loosely translated to “hit.” 

The set will be called Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va A Pasar Mañana (Nobody Knows What Will Happen Tomorrow) and will come out this Friday, Oct. 13. Fans can already pre-save the album here. 

Nadie Sabe marks Bunny’s fifth studio album. He previously released X100PRE (2018), YHLQMDLG (2020), El Último Tour Del Mundo (2020), Un Verano Sin Ti (2022).

Justin Long Lip-Syncs to The Proclaimers While Eating a Creepy-Crawly Breakfast in Eerie ‘Goosebumps’ Preview

If you’re looking for your next spooky watch ahead of Halloween, look no further than the new Goosebumps TV series, premiering Friday on Disney+ and Hulu. And in a new clip below, exclusive to Billboard, Justin Long’s character shows just how spooky things will get.

The horror-comedy series, based on R.L. Stine’s beloved ’90s Goosebumps book series, stars Long as teacher Nathan Bratt, who moves into a mansion haunted by the ghost of Harold Biddle, a teen boy who was tragically killed, and ends up possessed.

The new preview starts out ordinarily enough, with Long popping a Proclaimers album into a CD player and jamming out to “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” as he gets to work on a project in his basement. But things turn eerie when he heads to the kitchen for his breakfast, bypassing the box of cereal on the counter to instead enjoy a bowl full of live worms by the heaping, creepy-crawly spoonful.

The clip follows in the dark-humor footsteps of Stine’s book series — which even includes a 1994 book called Go Eat Worms! The original book series ran from 1992 to 1997, with subsequent spin-off series as well.

“I’m Gonna Be,” from The Proclaimers’ 1988 second album Sunshine on Leith, was the biggest hit for the Scottish rock duo, climbing all the way to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1993.

Drake Gives Away a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon to a Fan at His Toronto Concert

Drake‘s giving streak is still going strong. At his homecoming concert in Toronto over the weekend, the 36-year-old rapper raffled off a luxury car to one lucky fan in the crowd.

The “Rich Flex” musician has made a tradition of doling out expensive gifts to fans at his It’s All a Blur Tour, with past presents spanning designer handbags to stacks of cash. This time, however, Drizzy switched things up. Not only did he give away something he’s never given away before — a Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon — but he also selected his recipient completely at random, as opposed to his usual method of scanning the crowd and choosing someone — oftentimes holding a clever homemade sign — whom he sees in the crowd.

“This is what I’m gonna do,” he told the crowd mid-show at Scotiabank Arena. “I’m gonna pick a winning ticket out of this drum here. I want everybody to be super quiet.”

The Grammy winner then dipped his hand into a clear container filled with seat numbers printed on slips of paper. The winner? No. 17483, which appeared to be located in the upper level of the venue.

According to the Mercedes-Benz website, the base model G 550 SUV starts at $139,900.

The luxury car giveaway comes a couple weeks after Drake made headlines for hooking up one fan at his Miami show with $50K after reading the fan’s sign, which read, “I spent all my savings buying tickets for me and my ex, but Honestly, Nevermind, it’s really Her Loss.” “You know what? She’s gonna feel real f–ked up ’cause I’ma give you 50 bands, so you gon’ flex on her tonight,” he consoled the recently single — and newly rich — person in the crowd.

Prior to that, Drake offered to send a newlywed couple to Turks & Caicos after finding out they’d skipped their honeymoon in order to attend the show.

But while Drake’s good deeds have earned him some positive press in recent months, fans have been calling him out ever since he dropped his new album For All The Dogs Friday. That’s due to several lyrics on the record that fans saw as disses aimed at Rihanna, his onetime love interest, and her now partner, rapper A$AP Rocky.

On the track “Fear of Heights,” for instance, the hip-hop star repeatedly says the word “Anti,” aka the title of Ri’s Billboard 200 No. 1 2016 album. He also appears to make indirect references to her home country (Barbados), as well as her honorary Parsons degree. Plus, he seemingly takes a dig at Rocky by rapping, “That man, he still with you, he can’t leave you.”

Drake hasn’t responded to the criticisms over his apparent Rihanna lyrics, but he has started a war of words with Joe Budden in the days following The Dogs’ release. He’s also let fans know that the new album will probably be his last one for a while, as he plans to temporarily step away from music to focus on his health.

Bono Dedicates ‘Pride (In the Name of Love)’ to Israeli Victims of Hamas Attack on Dance Festival: ‘Our Prayers Have Always Been for Peace’

U2 have been advocates for peace and justice for nearly a half century. Which his why it was not surprising that during Sunday night’s (Oct. 8) show at the new Sphere in Las Vegas singer Bono took time out to acknowledge the devastating aftermath of a brutal surprise assault by Hamas militants early Saturday morning o Israel that has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 700 Israelis, including 260 killed at the Supernova desert dance festival.

“In the light of what’s happened in Israel and Gaza, a song about non-violence seems somewhat ridiculous, even laughable, but our prayers have always been for peace and for non-violence…” the band wrote on Instagram next to a video of Bono introducing their enduring 1984 tribute to late civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Pride (In the Name of Love),” which they added to the middle of setlist.

“But our hearts and our anger, you know where that’s pointed. So sing with us… and those beautiful kids at that music festival…,” he added with a hitch in his voice about the 3,500 people who were attending the rave just miles from the Gaza border. In the accompanying clip, Bono updated the song’s lyrics, singing, “Early morning, Oct. 7, as the sun is rising in the desert sky/ Stars of David, they took your life/ But they could not take your pride/ Could not take your pride/ Could not take your pride,” as the band rushed into the song’s uplifting chorus.

The U2 tribute came after the multi-pronged attack from Hamas militants from Gaza, who surprised Israelis during the Sukkot Jewish holiday with an early morning attack from the air, sea and land that prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called an act of war.

To date, in addition to the dead and 2,400 wounded Israelis — as well as an as-yet-undetermined number of kidnapped civilians and members of the military — the fast-moving, escalating conflict has also resulted in more than 560 dead and 2,700 wounded in Gaza.

Like U2, Madonna decried the “devastating” attack in a post, saying that watching “all of these families and especially children herded, assaulted and murdered in the streets is Heartbreaking.” The violence also resulted in Bruno Mars cancelling a planned concert in Tel Aviv on Saturday. On Sunday, President Biden said he had been in touch with Netanyahu to express “my full support for the people of Israel in the face of an unprecedented and appalling assault by Hamas terrorists. We will remain in close contact over the coming days. The U.S. will continue to stand with the people of Israel.”

Lizzo Joins Incubus Onstage & Rocks Out With Flute: ‘This Is BEYOND a Dream’

Lizzo definitely checked off an item on her bucket list over the weekend. After being a fan of Incubus since she was a teen, the 35-year-old musician got the chance to perform alongside the California rock band during its Friday (Oct. 6) concert at the Hollywood Bowl — after which she shared her excitement on Instagram.

“Those who know me… KNOW,” the star wrote, sharing videos of her passionately playing flute next to lead singer Brandon Boyd during “Aqueous Transmission.” “This is BEYOND a dream and FULL CIRCLE.”

“I saw @incubusofficial perform 20 years ago at @woodlandspavilion for morning view (I’ve been a fan since S.C.I.E.N.C.E),” she continued. “And now to be at @hollywoodbowl performing Aqueous Transmission with @sashabefluting — I WAS A PUDDLE ON THE FLOOR — thank you INCUBUS for everything but also for inviting me on stage and making my childhood dreams come true ????”

Later, Lizzo shared footage of her jamming out to the concert with friends in the audience, along with one clip of her posing for photos with Boyd and bandmates Mike Einziger, Chris Kilmore, José Pasillas and Nicole Row. (Row subbed for bassist Ben Kenney on Incubus’ tour this year.) “IM NOT OVER IT ????????,” the “Truth Hurts” artist captioned the post.

“Thank you @lizzobeeating for joining us at the Bowl,” read a post on Incubus’ Instagram account. “Was an honor to@share the stage with you. ??”

The Hollywood Bowl show marked the official end to Incubus’ 2023 tour, which featured support from Paris Jackson and BADFLOWER. The band will play at SEMA Fest in Las Vegas in November before embarking on an Australia tour in 2024.

Lizzo wrapped up her own Special Tour in July following 10 months of performances in North America and Europe. In August, she was hit with a lawsuit from a group of former backup dancers who alleged hostile work conditions and sexual harassment, accusations the Grammy winner emphatically denounced as “false” and “sensationalized.” A couple weeks ago, Lizzo filed a request that the case be dismissed by a judge.

Madonna Condemns Hamas’ Deadly Assault on Israel: ‘This Tragic Attack Will Only Cause More Suffering For Everyone’

The global community continued to reel on Monday (Oct. 9) from the unprecedented, multi-pronged attack launched by militant group Hamas on Israel early Saturday morning that has so far resulted in the deaths of more than 700 Israelis, including 260 who were slaughtered at a desert rave.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared the assault an act of war and the country’s minister of defense has ordered a “complete siege” of the Gaza Strip, cutting off water, food, electricity and food to the territory from which the invasion was launched.

Social media feeds were flooded with messages of support for the families of the Israeli dead — in addition to the more than 2,400 wounded and dozens believed to have been taken hostage — with many condemning the loss of lives and devastation of families as a result of the surprise invasion.

“What is Happening in Israel is Devastating.. Watching all of these families and especially children being herded, assaulted and murdered in the streets is Heartbreaking.
Imagine if this was happening to you??” Madonna wrote on Sunday alongside a video chronicling the early morning blitz that saw Hamas gunmen killing women, children and civilians as they invaded Israel from the land, sea and air.

“It’s Un-fathomable. Conflicts can never be resolved with violence. Unfortunately Humanity does not understand this Universal truth. Has Never Understood it. We live in a World Ravaged by Hate,” added the singer. “My heart goes out to Israel. To Families and Homes that have been destroyed. To children who are lost. To Innocent Victims who have Been Killed.”

Madonna also appeared to extend a hand to all the victims of the violence, which has so far also included more than 560 dead and 2,700 wounded Palestinians in Gaza. “To All who are Suffering or who will suffer from this conflict. Im Praying For you,” she said. “I am aware that this is the work of Hamas and there are many innocent people in Palestine who do not support this terrorist organization. This Tragic attack will only cause more suffering for everyone
Let us all Pray. For Israel. ??????For Peace. ♥️ For The World.”

The violence also resulted in Bruno Mars cancelling a planned concert in Tel Aviv on Saturday.

Drake and Lil Yachty Dance With Wolves in an Enchanted Forest in ‘Another Late Night’ Video

Drake goes on a trippy late night ghostride in the new video for his For All the Dogs song “Another Late Night.” The Cole Bennett-directed clip that dropped to coincide with the rapper’s latest studio album features Lil Yachty living it up in a forest illuminated by Christmas lights and, for some reason, frequented by a pack of wolves and a luminous owl.

Some of the action takes place in a Xmas light-covered sports car driven by an cosplay vixen Pisceus doing burnouts in a parking lot as Drizzy raps, “just another late night with my b–ch.” According to a note on the Lyrical Lemonade YouTube page, the clip was shot “in 2 hours in Maple Ridge Canada,” with most of the action consisting of the two rappers doing their thing in a parking lot — including Yachty appearing to get a new neck tat on set.

For All the Dogs has already amped up scrutiny over lyrics that some fans have speculated include disses of Rihanna and her partner, A$AP Rocky, as well as what British dance pop duo the Pet Shop Boys say is an unlicensed interpolation of their 1986 hit “West End Girls.”

Drake, 36, also appears to hit back at “weirdo” haters who criticized his close friendship with Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, who he said in 2018 that he texted with frequently when the British actress was just 14 years old; at the time Brown said Drake was a “great role model.”

On “Another Late Night,” Drizzy raps, “My bank account is magnolia, Milly rockin’, ay/ Weirdos in my comments talkin’ about some Millie Bobby, look/ Bring them jokes up to the gang, we get to really flockin’,” in what then appears to be another set of shots at Rocky.
