Smashing Pumpkins Put Out a Call For a New Guitarist, Then They Got ‘Over 10,000’ Applications

The Smashing Pumpkins announced earlier this month that they were looking for a new guitarist after longtime third strummer Jeff Schroeder announced his departure after more than 16 years with the group. But, after putting out open call on Jan. 5 for a fresh face, according to a post from the Billy Corgan-led band on Tuesday night (Jan. 16) they’e been inundated with way more applicants than anyone could have anticipated.

“The band has received over 10,000 submissions for the position of additional guitarist,” read a tweet featuring a photo of three original members Corgan, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and guitarist James Iha. The pile of audition tapes are so voluminous, in fact, that the post noted that there are currently “8 people working full-time to review each and every one.”

The Pumpkins were formed in Chicago in 1988 by Corgan and Iha, who were later joined by bassist D’arcy Wretzky and jazz drummer Jimmy Chamberlin — who replaced their original drummer, a drum machine. After rising to global fame and releasing a series of iconic indie rock albums such as Siamese Dream and the multi-platinum, two-disc Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the band fired Chamberlin in 1996 due to the drummer’s arrest on drug charges — and then re-hired him in 1999 — before splitting with Wretzky that same year. The original group broke up in 2000, at which point Corgan said he would not perform the band’s songs again.

The Pumpkins came back together in 2007 with Corgan and Chamberlin serving as the only remaining original members, joined by guitarist Schroeder, though Chamberlin would take leave again just two years later. Corgan continued to release new music with a rotating cast of players, with Chamberlin and Iha returning to the fold in 2018, though Wretzky did not sign on to the nearly complete reunion.

On Jan. 5, the band announced it needed a new guitarist to replace Schroeder, writing, “The Smashing Pumpkins are in search of an additional guitarist. The application process is open to anyone who might be interested. Applicants may submit a resume and related material to SPGuitar@redlightmanagement.com.” Schroeder’s last show with the group was a run through Siamese Dream to celebrate the album’s 30th anniversary on Sept. 17, 2023 at Corgan’s Madame’s ZuZu’s Teahouse in Highland Park, IL.

In a note to fans at the time of his departure, Schroeder said, “It’s easy to say now that when I joined The Smashing Pumpkins in 2007 I had no idea what I was getting into. The opportunity seemed to have come out of nowhere. I was at UCLA working on my doctorate in comparative literature when a close friend messaged me and said The Smashing Pumpkins were looking for a guitar player. Being a huge fan of the band, the audition was something I threw myself into. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.”

He added, “The amount of incredible memories created over the last 16 years with the band are almost too numerous to quantify. Although it was a very difficult decision to make, I’ve decided to leave the band to make some space to explore a slightly different path. I want to thank Billy, Jimmy, James, and Jack for being both wonderful bandmates and even better friends. I will absolutely miss sharing the stage with you. I wish the band all the success in the future. I will be watching and listening.”

The Pumpkins are currently slated to hit the road for their The World is a Vampire European summer tour on June 7 in Birmingham, U.K. on a run that will feature support from Weezer, Interpol and Tom Morello. They will then move on to a support role on Green Day’s summer Saviors Tour, which will criss-cross North America with Rancid and the Linda Lindas.

While the models walked down the runway, an unreleased track by Miley Cyrus played over the speakers, which fans quickly recognized as the rumored Bangerz leak, “Doctor.” “I could be your doctor / I could be your nurse / I think I see the problem / It’s only gon’ get worse,” Cyrus sings in the upbeat song in a clip circulating X (formerly known as Twitter) from the show.

Pharrell Williams, who succeeded the late Virgil Abloh as Men’s Creative Director at Louis Vuitton, contributed writing or production to four songs on Cyrus’ 2013 album Bangerz. Williams also previewed a new Mumford & Sons collaboration at the show, called “Good People.”

“Good people / been down / for so long / and now / it’s like / the sun is rising,” frontman Marcus Mumford sings in the hopeful, joyous chorus. Pharrell also provides backing vocals on the song alongside the Native Vocalists, according to NME.

If Cyrus were to release “Doctor,” it would follow her introspective single, “Used to Be Young,” released back in August. The 31-year-old star released her eighth studio album, Endless Summer Vacation, in March. The LP was led by Cyrus’ empowering lead single and Billboard Hot 100 chart topper, “Flowers.”

Lauren Jauregui Calls Out Amy Schumer After MLK Social Media Post

Lauren Jauregui is speaking out against Amy Schumer, months after a video clip posted by the comedian on social media, in which Martin Luther King Jr. is seen denouncing antisemitism and expressing Israel‘s “right to exist.”

“I want all you passive genocidal freaks to keep Dr. King’s name tf out of your mouths tomorrow, thanks. I’m talking to you especially @amyschumer,” the former Fifth Harmony member wrote on Sunday (Jan. 14) via X. Jauregui has been an outspoken supporter of Palestine amid the Israel-Hamas war, often urging for a cease-fire and release of hostages.

The civil rights legend’s daughter, Bernice King, also responded to Schumer directly in the fall, writing on X, “Certainly, my father was against antisemitism, as am I. He also believed militarism (along with racism and poverty) to be among the interconnected Triple Evils. I am certain he would call for Israel’s bombing of Palestinians to cease, for hostages to be released and for us to work for true peace, which includes justice.”

King added, “He said, ‘Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.’ We have much to correct.”

Back in November, Schumer defended herself against backlash following a string of pro-Israel posts.

“What I want is EVERY HOSTAGE BACK. I want safety and freedom from Hamas for Palestinians and Israelis. I want safety for Jewish people and Muslims as well. Everyone. Just like you. I want peace,” said Schumer. “You will never see me wishing harm on anyone. Saying I’m Islamophobic or that I like genocide is crazy. So here you go by popular demand. Comments on.”

Michael Bublé Was Almost Attacked by a Polar Bear While Drunk on the Beach

Michael Bublé had a very Canadian near-death experience.

The “Haven’t Met You Yet” singer was a guest on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Tuesday (Jan. 16), where he shared a story in which he almost came face-to-face with “aggressive” polar bears in Manitoba, Canada, after attending a film wrap party with actor Berry Pepper.

“I think, in the moment, we’re like, ‘You know what we should do? We should like race down the beach,’” Bublé recalled, noting that the duo were a bit tipsy at this point. “And so me and him and another guy came running down this beach, and a guy that lived there just started swearing.”

He continued that the man was “literally swearing at us and just screaming — I mean screaming bloody murder.”

Turns out, the man was warning them about polar bears living on the beach. “We didn’t realize, we were running to our certain death,” he said. “Because there were polar bears all down the beach. And yes, they’re the most aggressive — but God they’re so cuddly.”

He concluded with a laugh, “Sometimes I wonder about that, how close I was to being like a little polar bear lunch.”

Thankfully, Bublé survived the situation. The singer has notched eleven hits on the Hot 100, and his 2011 album Christmas recently returned to No. 1 in the UK (and finished at No. 58 on the Canadian year-end album chart).

Watch Bublé recount the full story below.

The track, released Sept. 8 via Tee Grizzley/300 Entertainment/3EE, debuts at No. 100 on the Jan. 20-dated chart with 14 million all-format radio airplay audience impressions and 2.6 million official U.S. streams (up 11%) in the Jan. 5-11 tracking week, according to Luminate. It also rises 31-30 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

Radio-wise, “IDGAF” makes moves at multiple formats: It holds at its No. 5 high on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and rises 20-19 on Rhythmic Airplay.

Mariah the Scientist charted for the first time in July 2021, when Ry Ry World debuted and peaked at No. 4 on Heatseekers Albums. She returned to the survey the following year with her EP Buckles Laboratories Presents: The Intermission (No. 16 peak). The latter’s “Spread Thin” became her first song to chart, when it debuted on Hot R&B Songs in October 2022, eventually reaching No. 15.

In October 2023, the Atlanta native signed to Epic Records. “I was reluctant to signing any new deal,” she told Billboard at the time. “But I was excited to find a partner that understands me as an artist and has the infrastructure to support me in the ways I need most.”

“Mariah is a dynamic creative force with a clear vision for her music and the experience surrounding it,” Epic president Ezekiel Lewis said after her signing.

To celebrate the signing, Mariah the Scientist released the single “From a Woman,” which reached No. 18 on Hot R&B Songs.

She released her third project, To Be Eaten Alive, on Oct. 27. The set features collaborations with 21 Savage, Young Thug and Vory, and became her best-performing album to date, reaching No. 93 on the Billboard 200 — her first entry on the chart. The set’s “Out of Luck,” produced by Kaytranada, is beginning to pick up steam: It debuts at No. 45 on the Jan. 20-dated R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and holds at its No. 36 high on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay.

Hot 100 First-Timers: Dylan Gossett Debuts With Breakthrough Hit ‘Coal’

Dylan Gossett’s breakout single “Coal” arrived on Billboard’s charts last August, and now, after steadily gaining over the past five months, the track reaches the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first entry.

The song debuts at No. 89 on the Jan. 20-dated chart with 5 million official U.S. streams (up 16%) in the Jan. 5-11 tracking week, according to Luminate. It also climbs 27-26 on Hot Country Songs, returning to its peak.

Gossett self-released “Coal” on July 27, 2023, after acoustic initial snippets of the song went viral on TikTok — one such clip has generated more than 6 million views on the platform. After releasing the full song on streaming services, it debuted on the Country Digital Song Sales chart following its first full week of activity.

The song later appeared on Gossett’s debut six-track EP, No Better Time, which he likewise self-released on Oct. 27. In addition to recording the songs himself, he also wrote, produced and mixed the entire EP from his bedroom in Austin, Texas. The set has since reached No. 6 on Heatseekers Albums, No. 17 on Americana/Folk Albums and No. 39 on Top Country Albums.

The release drew the attention of several major labels, and in November Gossett signed with Big Loud Texas/Mercury Records in collaboration with Range Media Partners — Big Loud Texas recently launched as a venture between Miranda Lambert, Jon Randall and Big Loud Records. A month later, Gossett signed with UTA for global representation.

“Tyler [Arnold] and Jake [Levensohn] from Mercury flew down to Texas to meet with me, and we instantly clicked,” Gossett told Billboard of his signing. “After meeting with Jon, Miranda and Seth [England] from Big Loud, it was a dream scenario to be able to combine forces and do this all together as a team.”

Though he released “Coal” in July, Gossett wrote the song two years ago and at the time had no plans to make music professionally. His biggest goal was playing for family gatherings at his grandfather’s lake house.

“Whenever holidays like Thanksgiving or Easter come around, my brother, parents, cousins, we all sit around a campfire and pass guitars around,” Gossett told Billboard in November. “Mainly, me, my brother and my cousin would play songs we wrote, but everyone would sing.”

Gossett has since toured with Wyatt Flores, Brent Cobb, Kolby Cooper and Luke Grimes, and beginning Jan. 17, he’ll open for Noah Kahan at six sold-out shows in Australia. Up next, his first headlining trek, the No Better Time Tour, kicks off next month in Dublin and runs through April.
