Renee Rapp Reveals She Got a ‘Little Scar’ From Her Viral Birthday Fall

This year is less than a month old, but Reneé Rapp is already knocking fans off their feet – and herself, literally – in 2024. And in between the release of Mean Girls and her upcoming appearance on this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, the rising superstar stopped by Late Night on Wednesday (Jan. 17) to chat with Seth Meyers about her accomplishments, along with the recent viral moment she wiped out on the sidewalk on her birthday. 

“It was literally painful,” Rapp said as Meyers held up a photo of her scraped knee, followed by paparazzi snaps in Page Six of the “Snow Angel” singer taking a spill with a bottle of champagne in hand.  

“I was walking out and I was like, ‘It’s my f—king birthday,’” recalled Rapp, who turned 24 on Jan. 10. “I was like, ‘Who’s coming for me right now? Nobody.’ Mind you, I ended up coming for myself.” 

“It’s a sign I’m gonna have a great year,” she added, smiling. “I have a little scar.” 

Rapp, who’s fresh off the release of “Not My Fault” with Megan Thee Stallion for the soundtrack of the Mean Girls movie musical adaptation – in which the Broadway vet also stars – will make her SNL debut as musical guest on Saturday (Jan. 20). Earlier this week, it was announced that Rapp would perform at this year’s Coachella, billed just under headliners Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator and Doja Cat. 

“Chappel Roan is playing and I’m really excited,” she told Meyers. “So is Sabrina Carpenter – my girls are playing I’m very excited to go see them.” 

In addition to her birthday tumble, Rapp has been generating a number of viral clips while promoting Mean Girls on the film’s press junket. In one video, she rants about a “disrespectful” and “misogynistic” tour bus businessman named Buddy as her costar, The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Chris Briney, looks on in disbelief. 

In another recent video from BuzzFeed UK, she gently chides Briney for not recognizing Beyoncé or Lady Gaga in photos from their 2010 music video for “Telephone.” “Oh my– oh my god. Have you ever heard ‘Telephone?’” she asks him as he shakes his head nervously. 

“I’m like, sweating,” Briney tells her. “Am I canceled? Is this it for me?” 

“No you’re not canceled!” she responds, laughing. “You’re just straight, it’s OK.”

Earth, Wind & Fire, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary Lift Their Voices for ‘Super Bowl Soulful Celebration 25th Anniversary’

Earth, Wind & Fire, Kirk Franklin and Mary Mary are the first wave of performers being announced for the Super Bowl Soulful Celebration 25th Anniversary special. CBS will broadcast the one-hour special on Feb. 10 (8 p.m. ET). 

Hosted by Cedric the Entertainer and Tichina Arnold, stars of the CBS series The Neighborhood, the special will be taped on Feb. 7 during Super Bowl LVIII week in Las Vegas. The taping will take place at the Pearl Theater in the Palms Casino Resort. Also performing will be The Players Choir. The ensemble of NFL talent has been a staple of the league’s Super Bowl weekend festivities for 16 seasons. Additional Super Bowl Soulful Celebration performers, honorees and partners will be announced in the coming weeks.

In addition, three NFL players will be saluted for their achievements on and off the field during the special. The honorees include Dallas Cowboys quarterback Rayne “Dak” Prescott (Faith In Action Award), Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin (New Beginnings Award) and Dallas Cowboys linebacker Markquese Bell (HBCU Player of the Year).

The Super Bowl Soulful Celebration 25th Anniversary is executive produced by Melanie Few, with Valarie Benning Thompson as producer. Television veteran Leon Knoles will direct, while four-time Grammy nominee Adam Blackstone will serve as music director.

Launched in 1999 during Super Bowl XXXIII, the Super Bowl Soulful Celebration was formerly known as the Super Bowl Gospel Celebration. Over the last 25 years, the annual NFL-sanctioned program has welcomed performers such as Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams, Fantasia and Gladys Knight. Norah Jones Announces ‘Visions’ Album, Spring 2024 U.S. Tour

Norah Jones revealed the title of her upcoming ninth studio album, Visions, on Thursday (Jan. 18), as well as the 12-song collection’s bubbling first single, “Running.” The Blue Note album from the 9-time Grammy winner is due out on March 8 and was recorded with producer/multi-instrumentalist Leon Michels (El Michels Affair, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings), who also co-wrote the single, on which he plays drums and baritone sax.

“From the first time I felt the click in my heart/ I keep running, oh I keep running away/ Try to sleep but the aching tears me apart/ I keep running, oh I keep running away,” Jones sings breathily on the slow-rolling, meditative pop tune spiked with her signature piano playing.

“The reason I called the album Visions is because a lot of the ideas came in the middle of the night or in that moment right before sleep, and ‘Running’ was one of them where you’re half asleep and kind of jolted awake,” Jones said in a statement that describes the album as “vibrant and joyous,” while tapping into “feeling free, wanting to dance, making it right, and acceptance of what life brings.”

In her statement, Jones added, “We did most of the songs in the same way where I was at the piano or on guitar and Leon was playing drums and we were just jamming on stuff. I like the rawness between me and Leon, the way it sounds kind of garage-y but also kind of soulful, because that’s where he’s coming from, but also not overly perfected.”

Visions is the follow-up to Pick Me Up Off the Floor, Jones’ last album of new songs, which was released early in the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.

In addition to the album, Jones also announced the dates for her 9-show 2024 spring East Coast U.S. tour, which is slated to kick off with a May 6 show at MGM Music Hall at Fenway in Boston and wind down on June 30 on the Freihofer’s Saratoga Jazz Festival in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Flo Milli Crowns TikTok Billboard Top 50 With ‘Never Lose Me’

Flo Milli’s “Never Lose Me” snags the No. 1 spot on the Jan. 20-dated TikTok Billboard Top 50 chart in its seventh week on the survey, vaulting 7-1.

The TikTok Billboard Top 50 is a weekly ranking of the most popular songs on TikTok in the United States based on creations, video views and user engagement. The latest chart reflects activity Jan. 8-14. Activity on TikTok is not included in Billboard charts except for the TikTok Billboard Top 50.

“Never Lose Me” reigns a month-and-a-half after its Nov. 30, 2023, premiere. Its rise is concurrent with continued gains on the multimetric Billboard Hot 100; it reaches a new peak of No. 42 on the Jan. 20-dated tally on the strength of 9.8 million official chart-eligible U.S. streams (up 11%) and 430,000 radio audience impressions (up 113%), according to Luminate.

As previously covered in articles about the TikTok Billboard Top 50, “Never Lose Me” has sported a variety of trends on TikTok since its release, including one involving creators displaying medals and trophies with captions describing what they got those accolades for, generally tongue-in-cheek (example: having the worst ex). Recently, the sound has also included a bevy of uploads highlighting the song’s “never had a b—h like me” lyric.

“Never Lose Me” takes over from Lesley Gore’s “Misty,” which falls to No. 2 after a weeklong reign. Then comes Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor,” which continues its bound toward the top of the chart, leaping 10-3. Its virality continues to stem from the film in which it’s featured, Saltburn, though usages of the track on TikTok continue to expand past Salburn-specific content.

Like “Never Lose Me,” “Murder on the Dancefloor” is blasting up the Hot 100, zooming 98-58 on the latest survey via 6.3 million streams, 295,000 radio impressions and 4,000 downloads.

Nicki Minaj’s “Everybody” (featuring Lil Uzi Vert) and Mitski’s “My Love Mine All Mine,” both recent stalwarts near the top of the TikTok Billboard Top 50, round out the top five.

One doesn’t need to travel outside the top 10 to find the week’s top debut. That distinction belongs to He Is We’s “I Wouldn’t Mind,” which bows at No. 8. It’s one of TikTok’s latest examples of revitalizing a long-since-released song; “I Wouldn’t Mind” originally premiered in 2010.

A sped-up version of the track, which was officially released on streaming services Jan. 11, has aided the song’s renaissance, with nearly all uploads centering on its “merrily we fall out of line” opening refrain and many following a specific dance trend.

The latest Billboard chart tracking week finds “I Wouldn’t Mind” up 98% to 2.2 million streams total.

A pair of songs that are new in the top 10 – but not chart debuts – follow “I Wouldn’t Mind,” as Cordelia’s “Little Life” and Xavi’s “La Diabla” complete the top 10. “Little Life” has sported a recent trend where creators do impressions of the song’s “I think I like this little life” vocal delivery, while “La Diabla” is the latest regional Mexican tune to find success on TikTok, with the viral sound occurring as the song leaps up the Hot 100, hitting a new peak of No. 22 on the Jan. 20 ranking.

Hot 100 First-Timers: 4Batz Lands First Entry With Viral Hit ‘Act II: Date @ 8’

Up-and-coming R&B singer 4Batz is officially a Billboard Hot 100-charting artist thanks to his viral hit “Act II: Date @ 8.”

The song, which the Dallas native self-released Dec. 15, debuts at No. 77 on the Hot 100 (dated Jan. 20) — the highest new entry — with 5.3 million official U.S. streams (up 40%) in the Jan. 5-11 tracking week, according to Luminate. It also rises 11-7 on Hot R&B Songs, becoming his first top 10 on a Billboard chart, and 36-23 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs.

4Batz is new to Billboard’s charts. “Date @ 8” became his first chart entry two weeks ago, when it debuted at No. 16 on Hot R&B Songs.

On the Jan. 13-dated Hot R&B Songs ranking, 4Batz scored his second chart entry with “Act I: Stickerz 99.” The song rises 25-24 on Hot R&B Songs in its second week with 1.8 million streams (up 6%).

4Batz’s popularity has been growing in recent weeks, partly to due his presence on TikTok. “Date @ 8” has soundtracked more than 50,000 clips on the platform to date, while “Stickerz 99” has been used in over 3,000 videos. 4Batz himself boasts more than 250,000 followers.

“Act II: Date @ 8” is already drawing early radio airplay, led by hometown Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart reporter KKDA Dallas, which gave the song 37 first-time plays Jan. 9-15, according to Mediabase, which provides Luminate airplay data for Billboard charts. The track ranked among the station’s top 20 most played titles in that span.

“Date @ 8” and “Stickerz 99” are 4Batz’s only releases on streaming services so far. The songs concurrently spark his 23-18 rise in his second week on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart.

Ice-T Reveals His 5 Favorite Musician Guest Stars on ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’

Ice-T may have risen to fame in the ’90s as a rapper and fronting the band Body Count, who courted controversy with their song “Cop Killer,” but these days he’s a cop himself — at least on TV. He’s Sgt. Odafin “Fin” Tutuola on NBC’s long-running police procedural Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which kicks off its milestone 25th season on Thursday, Jan. 18, and it’s the rapper-actor’s 24th season on the Emmy-winning crime drama.

Over the show’s many seasons, it has featured countless entertainers as guest stars before they made it big (Stephen Colbert, Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver and Hayden Panettiere, for example), as well as household names (Carol Burnett, Robin Williams, Angela Lansbury and John Stamos, to name a few). But SVU has also given everything from blink-and-you’ll-miss-it guest spots to pivotal roles to musicians besides Ice, who has become a beloved staple alongside Mariska Hargitay’s Captain Olivia Benson (who one of Taylor Swift’s cats is named after).

Among them? Miranda Lambert, Heavy D, Sabrina Carpenter, Dave Navarro, Questlove (who played a dead body!) and many more.

“The one thing about [creator] Dick Wolf [and production company Wolf Entertainment] is they understand how musicians translate into acting — they have no fear of that,” Ice tells Billboard. “I think Dick Wolf’s theory is, ‘If you could be a star at something, you could be a star at anything.’”

“My whole career doing music and being on SVU, I’ve never had Dick Wolf or any people then try to talk to me about music or anything, like, ‘Oh, Ice-T did ‘Cop Killer” or this that or the other,” adds the actor-musician. “I think from the Wolf perspective, ‘The bigger the star Ice-T is elsewhere, the bigger the star I have on my show.’ So when I go win a Grammy, it’s like SVU now has a Grammy Award-wining actor. He understands power is power.”

As for his run on the procedural, Ice — who’s up for a 2024 People’s Choice Award for drama TV star of the year — tells Billboard it’s not just his acting abilities that keep Fin on the drama. “[Wolf] sits back, he watches not only a performance but what are you bringing — kind of like what I always say is he looks at a show and goes, ‘If anybody’s tuning in to see Ice-T, yes, he stays on the show.’ If you’re on the show and they don’t think they’re tuning into see you, you can get one in the back of the head in the parking lot, you know?” the Grammy winner says. “For some reason, he likes me. I think I’ve done more television with Dick Wolf than anybody in his camp. I’m on five shows; I’ve been on seven, counting crossovers.” (The Law & Order franchise has boasted a total of seven different shows to date.)

As for how much longer Ice can see himself playing Fin, the answer is a long time. “Yeah, I’ll stay on it. I have nothing better to do,” he shares. “Like I said, right now, it’s an easy gig for me. I’m still able to do Body Count, my music, I gig on the weekends; I got a daughter in school — it’s much easier. When you’re touring, you have to do 200 days a year on the road. … I said when Law & Order ends — whenever it does end — I’ll just go out and read for all Samuel L. Jackson’s parts!”

But until then, he’s happy to keep carrying Fin’s shield, and having musicians guest star on SVU alongside him. “I just love it when they bring hip-hop artists on,” Ice tells Billboard. “It’s one of those shows where if you got a fanbase and you throw your name in the hat, they might call you.”

Lana Del Rey Teases Unreleased Song ‘Henry, Come On’: Listen Here

From her brief stint as a Waffle House waitress in Alabama to her recent cover of “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” Lana Del Rey has been embracing a rootsier aesthetic – and her latest song teaser is no exception. 

On Wednesday (Jan. 17), the 38-year-old alt-pop star shared a snippet of an unreleased recording on Instagram, which she simply captioned, “Henry, come on.” “Do you think I’d really choose it?/ All this off and on, Henry come on,” she croons over folksy acoustic guitar, her sultry voice drenched in her trademark reverb. 

“Baby come on, do you think I’d really lose it on ya?/ If you did nothing wrong, Henry come on,” she continues in the clip, whispering in some places. “Last call, hey ya, hang his hat up on a wall.” 

Del Rey provided no other details about the project, although she did pair the audio with a hazy black-and-white Polaroid of her wiping her eye with her thumb. “country era is coming,” one fan commented, while another person added, “Ah, so is this what you’ve been cooking up here down south? ? Sounds absolutely beautiful!” 

Indeed, the “Summertime Sadness” singer has been spending a lot of time below the Mason Dixon Line in recent months. In addition to mysteriously serving customers at a Waffle House in Florence, Ala., she was also spotted getting her nails done at a seemingly random salon in Birmingham over the summer. And just days before she released her take on John Denver’s “Country Roads,” she stopped by Memphis, Tenn., to perform “Unchained Melody” in Elvis’ honor on the live NBC special Christmas at Graceland. 

Del Rey’s potential song teaser comes less than a month ahead of the 2024 Grammys, at which she’s nominated for five awards, including album of the year for Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd and song of the year for “A&W.” She was also recently announced as one of three headliners at this year’s Coachella alongside Tyler, the Creator and Doja Cat, about which she wrote on Instagram: “It’s a little bit crazy but we’re going back to Coachella! I think you should come it’ll be fun.”

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Says ‘Dilemma’ Tackles Substance Use, Mental Health With Zero Filter: ‘Theres’s No Metaphor’

Green Day singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong has a herculean talent for taking the personal and making it universal. The 51-year-old pop-punk icon has spent more than three decades translating his fiery thoughts and emotions into anthems that make the band’s fans feel seen as they shout along.

On the group’s latest single, the punk bossa nova “Dilemma,” Armstrong tackles his alcohol addiction and trip to rehab in such clear-eyed lyrics as, “I was sober, now I’m drunk again/ I’m in trouble and in love again/ I don’t want to be a dead man walking… Welcome to my nightmare/ Where dreams go to disappear/ Sit around in rehab/ Feeling like a lab rat.”

“It definitely deals with mental health and addiction,” Armstrong told People magazine about the song from the band’s new album, Saviors, due out Friday (Jan. 19). “When I say, ‘I was sober, now I’m drunk again,’ that could be looked at two different ways. It could be someone going, ‘F-k, yeah. I was sober, now I’m drunk again,’ at a party, or it could be someone that’s fallen. That’s what it means to me, anyway.”

Armstrong went to rehab in 2012 in the wake of a bizarre onstage meltdown at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas during which he ranted about the group’s time being cut and smashed his guitar. On Howard Stern’s SiriusXm radio show on Wednesday morning (Jan. 17), Armstrong said he’d been sober for “five years and I thought that I could go back and be like a normal drinker again. And I think I was for a little bit and then it just escalated. It got to a point where I was physically and mentally drained and I just felt terrible. I got tired of feeling tired.”

The singer told Stern “Dilemma” was written while he was drinking and that it’s one of the most honest songs he’s ever penned. “There’s like no metaphor or anything like that,” he said. Armstrong has been detailing his struggles with anxiety and substance use since the earliest days of Green Day’s career as a snotty, snarling trio on the Berkeley, CA underground punk scene in the early 1990s. He most famously did so on their 1994 major label debut, Dookie on the hit “Basket Case,” in which the singer chronicled his crippling anxiety attacks, as well as on “Geek Stink Breath” from their 1995 follow-up, Insomniac, in which he detailed the harsh effects of methamphetamine use on his body.

Now sober, Armstrong said he no longer drinks and did not enter a program to deal with what appears to have been a relapse following his 2012 rehab stint. “I ended up being around a bunch of really good friends that don’t drink,” he told People. “There’s a lot more sober people — I’ve noticed that, and maybe because I was the only one that was hammered before, that now I notice that people are more sober now, and it was just something that I was unaware of, because I was s—tfaced or something.”

The married father of two sons — fellow musicians Joey, 28, and Jakob, 25 — said his sobriety is helping him feel more present for his family, which includes his wife of 29 years, Adrienne. “For me, alcohol gets in the way of everything, from my relationship with my family to just trying to get a good night’s sleep. It gets in the way of my happiness,” he told People. “So that’s why really I wanted to quit, and I was done. So with the friends that I have, I’m still able to go out and go listen to some music, see some band or go to a party — and it’s still a fun, sexy kind of evening, even though there’s no alcohol.”

The best part for Armstrong, he said, was that he can wake up the next day and he might be a bit tired, but “now there’s no shame and hangover and all that s–t. I feel really good.”

Green Day’s visit to Stern’s studio also included Armstrong laughing as he listened to a recording of him singing a sweet song as a five-year-old and the singer’s emotional backstage meet weird with Eddie Van Halen in 2007, during which the late Van Halen guitarist cried and shredded on his guitar as they spoke.

Ice Cube, Beastie Boys & More Reflect on Run DMC’s Impact in ‘Kings From Queens’ Documentary Trailer

Walk this way for the kings from Queens! The trailer for Peacock’s three-part docuseries Kings From Queens: The Run DMC Story about the influential hip-hop trio of Joseph Simmons (aka Rev Run), Darryl McDaniels (DMC) and Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay) has arrived, and Billboard has the first look.

In the teaser for the documentary — which reflects on Run DMC beginnings in the ’80s in New York City’s Queens, the group’s successes, struggles and more — hip-hop heavyweights discuss the impact the iconic act has had on the musical landscape.

“They’re the reason that hip-hop is as big as it is right now,” Ice Cube explains in the trailer of Run DMC, who was the first rap group on MTV.

“They changed the sound of music, the audience for rap music,” Mike D of the Beastie Boy asserts.

And as Run DMC’s Billboard Hot 100 hit “It’s Tricky” — which peaked at No. 57 in April 1987 — plays, rapper-actor Ice-T notes, “That was the moment I knew hip-hop was going to be huge — they brought more people to the genre.”

Other exclusive interviews featured in the Peacock docuseries include LL Cool J, Chuck D, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Questlove, Jermaine Dupri and more. Kings From Queens, Billboard can also exclusively report, will premiere Thursday, Feb. 1, exclusively on Peacock. The series is also executive produced by Rev. Run and DMC. (Jam Master Jay was fatally shot at his Queens, NYC, studio in October 2002.)

“I am very happy that the world is going to see our great story,” Rev. Run said in a statement. “So thankful for all that participated in helping us over the years. I started out as a young DJ Run and ended up impacting the world with my group RUN DMC. I am blessed to have been on this amazing journey.”

DMC also shared his thoughts on the purpose of the project. “This documentary series will reach, teach and educate people on the RUN DMC dynamic,” he said in a statement. “I know people will see themselves in our journey and I am hopefully that the next 50 years of hip-hop will be a movement of positive improvement and creativity, in the same way we changed music and the world.”

Over the course of the group’s career, Run DMC had three albums that reached the Billboard 200‘s top 10: Raising Hell (No. 3, 1986; the album also earned a Grammy nod for best R&B performance by a duo or group with vocal), Tougher Than Leather (No. 9, 1988) and Down With the King (No. 7, 1993). Over on the Hot 100, the trio placed five songs, including the hit cross-genre cover/collab of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” (No. 4) and “You Be Illin’” (No. 29).

The event, which will take over Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Canada, on Feb. 2 during the 2024 All-Star weekend, will also feature Dinah Jane and Chxrry22 performing the U.S. and Canadian national anthems, respectively. The Glorious Sons and TALK performances will be televised as part of the broadcasts on Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada and on ESPN and ESPN+ in the United States.

The weekend will kick off with NHL All-Star Thursday on Feb. 1, before NHL All-Star Skills presented by DraftKings Sportsbook will take place on Friday, Feb. 2, and the Honda (U.S.) / Rogers (Canada) NHL All-Star Game wraps up the weekend on Saturday, Feb. 3. 

This year’s NHL All-Star Skills will introduce a revamped format with 12 NHL All-Stars competing for points in eight events, with the all-star who accumulates the most points taking home a prize of $1 million. Additional news around NHL All-Star Weekend will be announced in the coming weeks.
