Sum 41 Ends Record Break Between No. 1s on Alternative Airplay Chart With ‘Landmines’

After more than two decades away, Sum 41 is back at No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart, as “Landmines” crowns the tally dated March 9.

It’s Sum 41’s second Alternative Airplay ruler, after “Fat Lip” reigned for a week in August 2001.

That break of 22 years, five months and three weeks between No. 1s is by far the longest in the chart’s 35-year history, surpassing the 13 years and six months that The Killers waited between “When You Were Young” in October 2006 and “Caution” in April 2020.

In between “Fat Lip” and “Landmines,” the Deryck Whibley-fronted Sum 41 charted nine Alternative Airplay titles, paced by the No. 7-peaking “Still Waiting” in 2003, with a pair of additional top 10s in “In Too Deep” (No. 10, 2001) and “We’re All to Blame” (No. 10, 2004). Upon its debut in October, “Landmines” marked Sum 41’s first appearance since “Screaming Bloody Murder,” which reached No. 37 in 2011.

“Landmines” takes over No. 1 on Alternative Airplay from Blink-182‘s “One More Time,” which sported a 20-week run atop the chart, tying it with Portugal. The Man‘s “Feel It Still” for the most weeks at No. 1 in the chart’s history.

Concurrently, “Landmines” lifts 40-37 in its second week on Mainstream Rock Airplay. On the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart, it rises 6-5 with 4.8 million audience impressions, up 11%, Feb. 23-29, according to Luminate. It’s Sum 41’s top-performing song on the ranking, which began in 2009, having surpassed the No. 46 showing for “Out for Blood” in 2019.

“Landmines” is the lead single from Heaven :x: Hell, Sum 41’s eighth studio album and first since 2019’s Order in Decline, due March 29. It’s billed as the band’s final release, as the group, which formed in Ontario in 1996, plans to disband following a final tour supporting the LP.

All Billboard charts dated March 9 will update on Billboard.com Tuesday, March 5.

Watch Cardi B Channel Missy Elliott in Sexy ‘Like What (Freestyle)’ Video Directed by Offset

Cardi B couldn’t let the rest of the female rappers have all the fun, as she decided to put an end to her hiatus and dive in head-first. The Bronx bombshell delivered her first single of 2024 with the hard-hitting “Like What (Freestyle)” on Friday (March 1), which arrived with an accompanying sexy music video featuring Cardi cycling through an array of eccentric outfits and directed by Offset.

Possibly inspired by Lil Kim’s fierce look (a light gray fur coat and matching bikini) in 2003’s “Came Back for You” video, Bardi struts around her futuristic mansion all to herself in a gray and black fur coat and racy black bikini. She later makes an outfit switch to nearly blind viewers with glitzy pants and a matching shiny bra top to go along with her blonde wig and icy bracelet.

Cardi B also pays homage to Missy Elliott in the lavish clip with her diamond-filled eyebrows. But that’s not the only salute to Missy, either, as “Like What” samples the Virginia legend’s “She’s a Bitch” from 1999’s Da Real World.

“Baby, here we go again/ P–sy real fat, probably got a double chin/ First, that b—h hate me, then this b—h hate me/ And somehow, they link up and they become friends, like, how,” she raps while calling out the side-switching drama in hip-hop.

After confirming their split last year, things might be OK between Cardi B and husband Offset as well, since the Grammy-winning rapper tapped the father of her two children to use his vision and direct the music video for “Like What (Freestyle).”

The Migos rapper urged Cardi to drop her anticipated sophomore album in a social media post earlier this month.

The “Like What (Freestyle)” marks Cardi’s first solo record since 2021’s “Up,” which earned the MC her fifth Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit. “Up” also nabbed a 2022 Grammy nomination for best rap performance.

This may only be the start of what could be another banner year for Cardi B as the end credits of the music video teased more to come: “This is just the beginning… Stay Tuned.”

Here’s Why Fans Think Beyoncé Is Headed for a Rock Era After ‘Act II’

Beyoncé‘s country era is only just beginning, but some fans are already convinced they know which musical direction the superstar will take next: rock.

Less than two weeks after Bey became the first Black woman to top the Hot Country Songs chart with her new single “Texas Hold ‘Em,” a fan theory that the singer will dive into rock music as a natural progression from her ongoing country era has caught like wildfire on social media. It seemingly started to take shape when the Grammy winner posted photos from a shoot for CR Fashion Book promoting her haircare line Cécred, in which she poses with a shaggy, choppy mullet while wearing a ripped T-shirt and skin-tight black corset.

In short, Bey looked very rock n’ roll in the pictures. And with that vision in mind, the Hive predicts that she’ll embrace a more hardcore genre soon, potentially after she releases after Act II, a follow-up to 2022’s Renaissance dropping March 29.

Trending on Billboard

“I’m telling you Beyoncé’s next album is going to be a rock album,” one fan tweeted, reposting a video of rock pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe playing guitar. “To complete the trifecta.”

“Beyoncé is REALLY doing her big one with this three act project,” wrote another person, noting that Renaissance may have kicked off the potential threefold genre experiment with its focus on house music. “Reclaiming the genres that started with Black culture… Happy Black History Month.”

Only time will tell how accurate the theory proves to be. After all, nearly two years will have passed since Renaissance dropped once Act II arrives. For now, Bey’s country music foray is paying off splendidly; “Texas Hold ‘Em,” released on Super Bowl Sunday alongside “16 Carriages,” is already one of the trendiest TikTok songs of 2024 and recently topped the Billboard Hot 100, marking the performer’s ninth No. 1.

Airline Gifts Friendship Bracelets to Taylor Swift Fans Headed to the Eras Tour in Singapore

For some Swifties flying to Singapore for Taylor Swift‘s Eras Tour shows this weekend, the concert experience is starting before they even touch down.

Philippine Airlines has been giving custom friendship bracelets to fans en route to Singapore National Stadium, where Swift will soon set up shop for six shows starting Saturday (March 2). The company shared a photo of strings of beads reading “1989,” “Lover,” “Fly Pal” and more on Instagram, as well as videos on its Story of flight attendants passing them out from a box to fliers.

“Look what you made us do! #flyPAL 03.01.2024 ✈️?,” the airline captioned one of its posts.

Trending on Billboard

The accessories have been a staple of the “Anti-Hero” singer’s Eras Tour since the very beginning, with fans trading them at shows in honor of the “You’re on Your Own, Kid” lyric “Make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it.” Even A-list concertgoers such as Halsey, Mariska Hargitay, Simu Liu, Brie Larson, Sarah Paulson, Lupita Nyong’o and more have participated in the trend.

And at Swift’s Feb. 23 show in Sydney, Australia, Travis Kelce got in on the fun. Photos from the night show him enjoying his superstar girlfriend’s performance with both of his wrists stacked with various friendship bracelets from fans, some of whom he gifted guitar picks.

The bracelets also happen to be a key part of the 14-time Grammy winner and Kelce’s love story. Before they started dating last summer, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end revealed on his New Heights podcast that he’d tried unsuccessfully to give Swift a beaded band with his phone number on it at her performance at Arrowhead Stadium — and the rest was history.

The “Karma” musician will be in Singapore through March 9, as will opener Sabrina Carpenter. After that, the Eras Tour will take a two-month pause — during which Swift will release her new album The Tortured Poets Department April 19 — before resuming in May with a stint in France.

This week, Pharrell and Miley conjure new (old) magic, Cardi B is not resting on her laurels, and Charli XCX wants to go back to the trucker-hat era. Check out all of this week’s picks below:

Pharrell Williams feat. Miley Cyrus, “Doctor (Work It Out)”

Whether viewed as a victory lap following her first Grammy wins or a tribute to Bangerz a little after that turning-point album’s 10th anniversary, “Doctor (Work It Out)” is the sound of Miley Cyrus strutting alongside one of her most trusted collaborators, Pharrell Williams, on a funked-up track that the pair first worked on years ago. “Doctor (Work It Out)” follows the same thread of unrepentant desire as the duo’s past hit “Come Get It Bae,” with a little more disco swagger and medical double entendres in the mix; the song could evaporate tomorrow or become a durable hit, but either way, Cyrus sounds like she’s having a great time with it.

Trending on Billboard

Cardi B, “Like What (Freestyle)”

“Ayo, let me put some gas in this motherf–kin’ year,” Cardi B sneers to begin “Like What (Freestyle),” the rap superstar’s first solo track in multiple years that serves as a ripcord to fire up her rumbling, singular flow. “Like What” takes aim at Cardi’s enemies and haters over a sample of Missy Elliott’s 1999 classic “She’s a Bitch,” but the takedowns are simply ingredients in a delicious return to form for Cardi, who doubles down on similes and tosses out stunners like Stone Cold Steve Austin — before actually referencing him on a hilarious, X-rated rhyme.

Charli XCX, “Von Dutch”

Although Charli XCX has explored a variety of pop aesthetics and release models over the course of her decade-plus career, the prospect of upcoming album Brat brimming with propulsive, laser-light club fare like the smashing new single “Von Dutch” should excite both casual listeners and longtime supporters. Charli locks in on the woozy production and guides the track towards the inevitable bass drops, never letting up as her voice circles in and out of focus; like the titular trucker hat, “Von Dutch” is designed to evoke bleary-eyed mid-‘00s nights out, and hits its target in thrilling fashion.

ScHoolboy Q, Blue Lips

Five years can represent an eternity in modern hip-hop, but for ScHoolboy Q, the follow-up to 2019’s CrasH Talk finds the TDE stalwart inhabiting his longtime pocket — telling hard truths over left-of-center beats — while also evolving as a lyricist, especially when focusing on parenthood and his concerns of the future. Blue Lips is not designed as a mainstream crossover (the bugged-out, menacing “Pop,” featuring Rico Nasty, makes that plain), but ScHoolboy Q has a loyal following that’s been waiting for another opus, and Blue Lips rewards them handsomely.

Galantis, David Guetta & 5 Seconds of Summer, “Lighter”

What a road 5 Seconds of Summer has traveled: after earning fame and fortune as new-school pop-punks and One Direction’s brattier (and often thrilling) opening acts, 5SOS has grown into an expansive rock outfit that’s capable of highlighting a throwback dance cut like this Galantis and David Guetta team-up. “Lighter” trades in mid-2010s euphoria, back when hits by Zedd and Clean Bandit were all over top 40 radio, but 5SOS is the wild card that prevents the track from sounding like a re-tread.

Editor’s Pick: Yard Act, Where’s My Utopia?

Where’s My Utopia? is the sound of a rock band leveling up: Leeds post-punk group Yard Act impressed on their 2022 debut The Overload, but the collective’s sophomore album sharpens their sardonic approach without abandon, as if every inch of the quartet has become more fearless over the past two years. “Dream Job” is an obvious highlight with its call-and-response dance-punk, but “The Undertow,” “An Illusion” and “We Make Hits” all showcase a band worth investing in long-term.

Ariana Grande Reveals Which ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Song Will Be Her Next Single

With just one week left to go until her highly anticipated seventh album Eternal Sunshine drops, Ariana Grande has confirmed which of its 13 tracks will serve as the next single: “We Can’t Be Friends.”

The 30-year-old pop star broke the news via a video on social media Friday (March 1). In the clip, Grande sits in an ominous waiting room while going over a consent form. Next to the phrase “You have given extensive thought behind your decision and give ‘Brighter Days Inc.’ the exclusive permission to remove this person completely from your memory,” her pen hovers over the “No” check box — until she puts a checkmark next to “Yes” at the last second.

The star then signs her name as “Peaches” on the contract line. “We Can’t Be Friends,” reads a message on the next screen. “Coming soon.”

Trending on Billboard

The track will serve as the second single off Eternal Sunshine, following the January Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping hit “Yes, And?” Grande has previously said that she won’t be releasing any more songs ahead of the album, meaning fans most likely won’t hear “We Can’t Be Friends” until March 8, when the LP arrives.

Grande’s latest announcement comes three days after the singer unveiled the full Eternal Sunshine tracklist, which shows the upcoming single’s full title as “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” at No. 10. The listing only promises one featured guest — “Nonna,” aka Grande’s grandmother, on the final track, “Ordinary Things.”

Miley Cyrus Reveals How Pharrell Helped Her Find Herself After ‘Hannah Montana’

Miley Cyrus and Pharrell have been working together for more than a decade, with their most recent collaboration “Doctor (Work It Out)” arriving Friday (March 1), 10 years after the pair first wrote it.

Over the course of that time, Cyrus has gone through some major changes — perhaps most notably, her transition from teen Disney Channel starlet to the pixie-haired, sometimes controversial 21-year-old who released Bangerz in 2013. And in a new interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music 1, the pop star revealed that Pharrell has been there for her through it all.

Trending on Billboard

“He was really the only one that I could kind of tell him what I really wanted, what I really wanted to make, who I really wanted to be, what I really wanted to do,” Cyrus recalled of meeting the producer back when she was still best known for starring in Hannah Montana. “I think Pharrell was perfect because it was almost like he could be a bumper for me, but he wasn’t going to be a bridle.”

The “Flowers” singer also said that Pharrell was one of the only people who encouraged her famous, drastic haircut in 2012, when she chopped off her long brunette waves and sported a platinum dye job. “I was like, ‘Pharrell, I really want to change. I really want to have a big change,’” Cyrus told Lowe.

“He was kind of the only one — I knew that everyone around me would tell me no — and he was really the only one that I asked, ‘What did he think?’” she added. “And he was like, ‘Go for it today, tomorrow, as soon as you can. That sounds like exactly the perfect thing to do.’”

“I’ll never forget just meeting her at a time where people had pegged her to be one thing particularly,” chimed in the “Happy” musician. “She was Hannah Montana at the time, and she was growing up and really wanting to experience life no matter how far the precipice was, that was her … I just remember her just being in a place where no one really understood what she was, and I got it.”

During the interview, the duo also confirmed that “Doctor (Work It Out)” started as an outtake from Bangerz, which featured a few other Pharrell-produced tracks such as “4×4” featuring Nelly and “#GetItRight.” Earlier this year, they decided to finally give it a proper release.

“We just believe so much in timing and in everything happening when it’s supposed to,” Cyrus told Lowe. “Around the Grammys, Pharrell and I were talking about putting the song out, and it just felt like it was so serendipitous, and there were so many alignments and so many moments that made me know that now was the perfect time.”

“And then sometimes things in our past make more sense in our present than they ever did then,” she continued. “And so this song, I think the nature, the celebration, the feeling, especially with the video, the joy, the dancing, the letting go, it’s what this song really always needed. I don’t think I could have delivered that at that time [in 2013] … It completely embodies my spirit and my essence at this exact moment.”

Pearl Jam Lands Atop Hot Hard Rock Songs Chart With ‘Dark Matter’

Pearl Jam’s “Dark Matter” becomes the band’s first leader on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, rising to No. 1 from No. 3 on the survey dated March 2.

In the Feb. 16-22 tracking week, the first full tracking frame for “Dark Matter,” which was released Feb. 13, the song accumulated 5.6 million radio audience impressions, 1.2 million official U.S. streams and 1,000 downloads sold in the U.S., according to Luminate.

“Dark Matter” is Pearl Jam’s second entry on Hot Hard Rock Songs dating to the chart’s inception, following “Superblood Wolfmoon,” which appeared at No. 19 on the inaugural June 30, 2020-dated tally.

“Dark Matter” also leaps 46-28 on Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, marking Pearl Jam’s highest rank since “Superblood Wolfmoon” peaked at No. 17 in April 2020. The band’s all-time best since the chart began in 2009 belongs to “The Fixer,” which debuted and peaked at No. 2 that August. (Pearl Jam first appeared on Billboard’s charts in November 1991.)

As previously reported, “Dark Matter” jumps 6-1 on the Rock & Alternative Airplay list. It also bounds 17-6 on Mainstream Rock Airplay, where it’s Pearl Jam’s 24th top 10: No. 10 on Alternative Airplay, becoming the band’s 20th top 10; and debuts at No. 39 on Adult Alternative Airplay. The track’s sales place it at No. 3 on Hard Rock Digital Song Sales.

“Dark Matter” is the title-cut lead single from Pearl Jam’s 12th LP, due April 19. Its predecessor, Gigaton, debuted at No. 1 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums chart in April 2020 and has earned 172,000 equivalent album units to date.

Matisyahu Opens Up About Canceled Shows in Santa Fe & Tucson: ‘We Know Why These Shows Are Being Canceled’

Matisyahu sat down with Billboard to run through the events that happened in Santa Fe, N.M., and Tucson, Ariz., earlier this month.

The reggae singer’s planned shows at Santa Fe’s Meow Wolf and Tucson’s Rialto Theatre were abruptly canceled due to security concerns, and he ended up performing a show at Tucson’s The Rock for fans to see for free. “There have been protesters at my shows, and two shows got canceled. One of them in New Mexico, where after we had driven hundreds of miles set up, had a sold out show, fans were starting to come, the staff claims that they were afraid to come into the show because of like, tenant protesters,” he says to Billboard. “We’ve discovered that that’s obviously not true and they chose to not come in and to wait untillthe last minute so that we had to cancel the show. The next night, there was a similar situation that happened and when they let us know that the show was canceled, I myself started making phone calls and found another venue, a legendary reggae venue down the street. […] They claimed there that it was a security issue at the Rialto, so we moved everything, found a completely new staff in two hours and had a beautiful concert with no security issues.”

He continued, “People can say what they want, but we know why these shows are being canceled. The bottom line is that we’re going to continue and we’re going to play every show on the tour and any venue that cancels, I have backup venues in every city in America. I’ve been doing 200 shows a year for 20 years in this country, and so we will play our shows regardless.”

Following the cancellation, Meow Wolf shared a post that read, “On February 14th, we canceled a concert at the House of Eternal Return. Two hours before the show was set to begin, we found ourselves without adequate staff to safely manage the sold out crowd. Meow Wolf will always prioritize the safety of our employees and our guests. We are in the process of refunding all ticket holders […] Meow Wolf believes in free expression, respectful discourse and the power of art to bring people together. We do not tolerate Antisemitism, Islamophobia, hate, racism, discrimination or violence of any kind.”

The Rialto similarly cited “safety concerns and staff shortage” preventing the venue’s ability to “prioritize the safety of [its] employees and [its] guests.”

Matisyahu also opened up about his experience visiting Israel amid the ongoing Israel Hamas War, sharing that he “experienced hope,” which meant a lot “for the Jewish people right now and for a lot of people is this feeling of isolation, separation, anger, fear.”

He continued, “I was feeling really hopeless about what the future is going to look like for all of us and went to Israel and renewed like my faith in humanity and renewed my faith in God. You know, I have to say, I left with this feeling of light and I’ve been trying to take that and really put that into the music and into the shows and we’re facing a lot of tough situations right now. But that’s what I keep going back to. When I think about the people that I met, the survivors of those of that festival, the soldiers that I met, the families of the hostages and what they’re going through, and that’s what’s giving me the strength to to be myself and not be quiet about what’s happening right now.”
