‘Urgency and Realness’: Inside the Human Rights Campaign’s Beyoncé-Inspired ‘Renaissance’ Syllabus

It may be Cowboy Carter week, but the silvery disco ball strobe lights of Renaissance — the first act of Beyoncé’s presently unfolding trilogy — continue to illuminate the world. On Monday (March 26), the Human Rights Campaign debuted Renaissance: A Queer Syllabus, a sprawling collection of academic articles, essays, films and other pieces of media rooted in Black queer and feminist studies and directly inspired by each track on Queen Bey’s Billboard 200-topping dance album.

Curated by Justin Calhoun, Leslie Hall and Chauna Lawson of the HRC’s HBCU program, the syllabus will serve as an educational resource designed to honor, analyze and celebrate the joy, resilience, innovation and legacy of the Black queer community. The syllabus will be shared with nearly 30 historically Black colleges and universities, including Howard University, North Carolina A&T University, Prairie View A&M University and Shaw University.

Trending on Billboard

Released in the summer of 2022, Renaissance was and continues to be a bonafide cultural phenomenon. A lovingly researched ode to the Black queer roots of dance music filtered through her intensely personal relationship with her late Uncle Johnny, the album captivated fans around the world and shined a much-needed light on the unsung movers and shakers of Black queer art and culture. The album won four Grammys — including a historic win for best dance/electronic album — housed a pair of Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits in “Break My Soul” (No. 1) and “Cuff It” (No. 6) and spawned a record-breaking stadium tour and accompanying box office-topping documentary concert film.

From the economic impact of Beyoncé’s silver fashion aesthetic to career boosts given to Black queer icons such as Kevin Aviance, Ts Madison and Honey Dijon, Renaissance proved itself to be much more than a standard LP. The HRC understood that there was a chance to make a real impact across education and activism through the lens of the record.

“There are ways that we can embed the impact of her lyrics into real life. It was serendipitous for this to happen,” said Hall, director of the HRC’s HBCU Program. “All the anti-DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] laws were being introduced in the same states that she was doing concerts in. So, what would it look like for us to put our best thinking together to put articles, books, and movies to all of the songs on her album?”

On May 15, 2023 — just three shows into the Renaissance World Tour — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill banning DEI initiatives in public colleges. A month later (June 14, 2023), the governor of Beyoncé’s home state of Texas, Greg Abbott, signed a bill prohibiting DEI offices and the hiring of DEI staff at public higher education institutions.

The juxtaposition of rising anti-queer sentiments and Beyoncé’s Renaissance era anchors the syllabus’ arrangement. The syllabus begins with a brief statement summarizing and reiterating the HRC’s June 2023 LGBTQ+ State of Emergency statement, which they declared “for the first time following an unprecedented and dangerous spike in anti-LGBTQ+ legislative assaults sweeping state houses.” The final pages of the syllabus contain both a reprint of Beyoncé’s statement in memory of O’Shea Sibley — a young Black queer man who was murdered in Brooklyn back in July 2023 for simply voguing to Renaissance -—and an additional statement from the HRC denouncing hate crimes.

“I think when you preface something [with] a state of emergency, you get the lay of the land and how important [the] syllabus is,” said Calhoun, an HBCU program manager at HRC. “It brings a sense of urgency and realness to what’s actually happening to queer youth, especially black Queer Youth.”

Calhoun — alongside Hall and Lawson — began work on the syllabus in October 2023, dividing the album’s 16-song tracklist into different themes and building hubs of additional secondary resources that expound on said themes. Despite Calhoun’s initial concerns that breaking up the tracklist would “lose the flow” of the album — Renaissance is intentionally mixed and sequenced to emulate a seamless DJ set — he ultimately agreed that the approach helped the syllabus feel more like a lesson plan.

Six themes anchor the syllabus, ranging from “intersectionality and inclusivity” to “social justice and activism.” Fan favorite tracks like “Alien Superstar” and “Thique” rope in the origins of the body positivity moment and iconic speeches from Barbara Ann Teer (including the one sampled on “Superstar”) under the umbrella of “empowerment and self-acceptance.” “Energy,” the song behind the infamous “mute challenge,” gets new readings by interloping essays from bell hooks and Patricia Hill Collins. Even less-famed tracks like “Move” (with Grace Jones & Tems) — which is paired with fascinating readings on the effects of colonialism on pre-colonial Africa and African perspectives on trans identity — get in on the scholarly fun.

Naturally, “Heated,” a song that had an intense, immediate impact on Renaissance listeners with deep ties to the ballroom scene, served as the crux of the syllabus, according to Calhoun. “It was the model child for how a section of the syllabus should look,” he explains. “There was so much to unpack in ‘Heated.’ You have Beyoncé’s Uncle Johnny, a Black gay man [living] during the AIDS epidemic — that lead to us [compiling different resources] about how we lost a generation of black gay men who were visionaries and people who paved the culture.”

The syllabus is a thorough resource, one that continues the HRC’s connection with Beyoncé’s Renaissance era. On Aug. 27, 2023, the HRC, with support from Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD Foundation, mounted the Equality Ball in Las Vegas, NV – an event that doubled as actual ball complete with a “Bring It Like Beyoncé” category and an educational resource pushing voter registration and sexual health awareness.

Although Parkwood Entertainment, Beyoncé’s production company, did not authorize or give “direct sign off” on the syllabus (Billboard reached out to representatives at Parkwood for comment), creating the resource was “a seamless process,” according to Calhoun. “We knew amongst the team which authors and which folks to go to for certain things, I don’t think any of us did many Google searches,” said Hall. “We knew where to go to connect the right [resources] to one of her songs [and] build a course out of it. It is really a testament to well-read, well-learned people. I feel obligated to say that because we don’t talk about ourselves like that. We’re smart. It would take folks with Howard degrees to put something like this together.”

From Pauli Murray and C. Riley Snorton to Audre Lorde and Sonya Renee Taylor, HRC’s new syllabus continues Renaissance’s mission of highlighting, amplifying and re-centering Black and queer voices. Of course, this syllabus is far from the first piece of Beyoncé-inspired coursework in higher education. Following the release of the Grammy winner’s culture-shifting album Lemonade in 2016, a slew of Beyoncé-themed classes debuted across higher education institutions — including the University of Copenhagen, Rutgers University, Arizona State University and the University of Texas at San Antonio.

For Hall, the rise of courses tackling social constructs through the lens of pop culture is only a good thing. “We’re in a powder keg right now, and it’s gonna pop around election time,” he says. “We have to get information to folks in younger generations. We need them to be connected to what’s really happening and a way to do that is through music and culture.”

Nonetheless, Hall and his colleagues aren’t oblivious to the fact that Renaissance exists in an intrinsically capitalistic context. “[It’s] something I grapple with so much,” notes Calhoun. “I had a teacher who once said that capitalism is the current structure and we have to live under it. This is how life operates. What is Beyoncé going to do to stop a capitalist structure? I just don’t feel like we’re at a point in the movement where we know what we want [people like her] to do.”

While there may be no current plans for a Cowboy Carter syllabus — “being from the Mississippi Delta, that would be dope, but it depends on Beyoncé,” quipped Calhoun — the HRC’s Renaissance syllabus is the ultimate proof that the Renaissance is, in fact, not over.

“We’ve made a course that adds to scholarship about Black queer futures and specifically ballroom and uplifting history that’s not as popular in academia,” says Calhoun. “It really adds to the academic cannon of Black queer scholarship in a way we haven’t seen before.”

Watch Scary Cute Kid Band Crush Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Wish’

As long as you don’t look up the original lyrics, there is something adorably wholesome about the latest video from Ohio’s O’Keefe Music Foundation starring a group of grade school and high school students crushing the 1993 Nine Inch Nails ripper “Wish.”

In a five-minute video posted by the youth music education program that offers free music lessons, music camps, recording sessions and music video production to youth musicians from around the world, a young girl is suuuuuuper bored at her lame birthday party. Then she makes a wish and blows out her candles and is magically transported to a rec room rager where some kids are shredding the Grammy-winning, hard-charging industrial single from NIN’s 1992 Broken EP.

Fronted by fierce 10-year-old vocalist Zoë Franziska and propelled by blitzing drums from 18-7ear-old Will Bright, the cover includes more playground appropriate lyrics in place of Trent Reznor‘s not-safe-for-school lines plumbing the depths of masochism and nihilism. And while the cover is fierce, the whole things also comes off kind of cute thanks to the sight of all those kics packed into a room festooned with streamers and balloons ripping it on guitars and keytars.

While there’s no update on when fans can expect new music from NIN, last week the band announced a team-up with Welcome Skateboards on a limited run of decks and merch celebrating the 30th anniversary of the band’s 1994 beloved album The Downward Spiral.

Drake Seemingly Addresses Kendrick Lamar Feud During Concert: ‘I Got My F–king Head Up High’

Drake has appeared to respond to Kendrick Lamar’s scathing disses from his assist on “Like That,” which landed on Future and Metro Boomin’s We Don’t Trust You collab album last week.

The 6 God took the stage as usual at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Fla., on Sunday night (March 24), but delivered a pugnacious message to the crowd seemingly addressing his rap peers and the feud before leaving.

“A lot of people ask me how I’m feeling. I’ma let you know I’m feeling. Listen, the same way I’m feeling is the same way I want you to walk out this building tonight,” he said before raising his voice further. “I got my f–king head up high, my back straight, I’m 10 f–king toes down in Florida and anywhere else I go. And I know that no matter what, it’s not a n—a on this earth that could ever f–k with me in my life!”

Trending on Billboard

Fans appeared to enjoy the rant from Drake, as he was met with resounding applause before the It’s All a Blur – Big As the What? show came to an end.

K. Dot previously put Drizzy and J. Cole on blast with his scintillating “Like That” verse, which in part came as a response to the notion of them being the Big Three in rap, as Cole rhymed about on his and Drake’s Billboard Hot 100-topping “First Person Shooter.”

“Yeah, get up with me, f–k sneak dissing/ ‘First Person Shooter,’ I hope they came with three switches,” Lamar raps before addressing the duo once again. “Think I won’t drop the location? I still got PTSD/ Motherf–k the Big Three, n—a, it’s just big me.”

Kendrick discards Cole and then aims his crosshairs at Drake while name-dropping his For All the Dogs album and then comparing the two to late music icons Prince and Michael Jackson on the We Don’t Trust You track: “N—a, bum, ‘fore all your dogs gettin’ buried/ That’s a K with all these nines, he gon’ see Pet Sematary.” (Drake tied MJ for Hot 100 No. 1 hits last year.)

The Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper also rhymes: “And your best work is a light pack/ N—a, Prince outlived Mike Jack.”

Drake and Kendrick Lamar have had an icy relationship since Kung Fu Kenny’s atomic verse on Big Sean’s “Control” in 2013. They collaborated a year prior for Kendrick’s “Poetic Justice” and haven’t teamed up since.

The 6 God heads to Birmingham, Ala., for a show on Wednesday (March 27), and then will head north for a few New York dates.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Shouts Out Olivia Rodrigo’s Reproductive Rights Advocacy: ‘Your Voice Resonates With So Many’

Olivia Rodrigo has been vocal about her support for reproductive rights throughout her Guts World Tour, and politicians are taking notice. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer welcomed the 21-year-old pop star to Detroit on Saturday (March 23) with a pun-filled video quoting the pop star’s song titles and commending her for speaking out about bodily autonomy.

“We’re not just good 4 u, we’re great for anyone who believes in the fundamental right to make informed decisions about their own bodies,” Whitmer began, addressing Rodrigo directly in a clip posted to TikTok. “Like you, Michiganders have guts and are using their voices to drive change.”

“Across the nation, it feels like we’re taking one step forward, three steps back, but here, we’ve been a brutal force against any attempts to roll back our reproductive freedoms,” she continued, mixing in nods to songs on Rodrigo’s two studio albums, 2021’s Sour and 2023’s Guts. “We’ve slayed outdated vampire laws that threatened our autonomy and expanded protections for those seeking or providing reproductive healthcare. Not a bad idea, right?”

Trending on Billboard

“Olivia, your voice resonates with so many, not just through your music, but through your advocacy,” Whitmer added. “And in Michigan, we’re no stranger to fighting for what’s right. We couldn’t be happier to have you.”

Whitmer’s video comes about a month after Rodrigo kicked off her first-ever arena tour. In conjunction with the trek, the “Drivers License” singer launched her Fund 4 Good supporting local abortion organizations.

In addition to donating a portion of her proceeds from tickets to abortion funds across the globe, Rodrigo has also been inviting local chapters of the National Network of Abortion Funds to set up resource tables at each Guts World Tour venue in North America. At some shows, fans could grab free morning-after pills, condoms and lube; however, funds were reportedly asked recently to stop offering those items at concerts.

Welcome to Detroit, @Olivia Rodrigo! Here in Michigan, we’re ensuring everyone has the license to make their own choices. It’s time to drive home the message that our rights are not up for debate. These policies aren’t just logical, they’re good 4 u.

‘Austin’ Hitmaker Dasha Signs to Warner Records

Dasha, the singer-songwriter behind the viral hit “Austin,” has signed a label deal with Warner Records.

“We met with every label, and all of the labels were incredible,” Dasha tells Billboard of selecting Warner Records. “It was a difficult decision, but Warner just felt like they had the most heart. Everyone on that team are genuinely fans of the music. It just came down to a gut feeling. They were so passionate about my songwriting, which is my priority. First and foremost, I’m a songwriter and they champion my storytelling.”

“Dasha is a star,” says Warner Records co-chairman/CEO Aaron Bay-Schuck via email. “She’s a force of nature when she walks in the room, she has real passion, significant talent, clear vision, and really strong music that extends far beyond ‘Austin.’”

In November 2023, as an independent artist, Dasha released “Austin,” a mesh of vengeful lyrics and immense dance grooves, in which she declares that while she hightails it to Los Angeles, her ex-lover will “still be here, drunk, washed up in Austin.”

Trending on Billboard

“Austin” spiked on TikTok earlier this year before surging up the Spotify Viral 50 chart. The song now resides at No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No. 17 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, while Dasha is at No. 11 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart. The song comes from Dasha’s eight-song project What Happens Now?, which came out Feb. 16. “Austin” is also the soundtrack to a corresponding line dance launched by Dasha via a TikTok video last month. To date, “Austin” has earned nearly 450,000 unique video creations on the platform.

The song is resonating on other outlets as well. “It’s been surreal because the song hasn’t slowed down. Yesterday, we did 2.2 million streams on Spotify alone,” says Dasha, who is managed by Alex Lunt of Type A Management.

DASHA

Dasha was raised in San Luis Obispo, California, and is now based in Nashville. She wrote her first song at age 13, inspired by her love of country, pop, rock, and Americana, with influences including Kacey Musgraves, SZA, Tyler Childers and Noah Kahan. Dasha enrolled at Nashville’s Belmont University, but after the COVID-19 pandemic hit in 2020, she returned to California. After releasing the 17-track R&B/pop-oriented album Dirty Blonde in 2023, she reconnected with her love of country music.

She wrote “Austin” in early 2023, with co-writers Adam Wendler, Cheyenne Rose Arnspiger and Kenneth Heidelman.

“Once we kind of got the idea and the chords going, the song flew out in less than an hour,” Dasha recalls. “It just felt natural and everyone I showed that song to after that session was just like, ‘This is going to be a really big song.’ I never doubted it once and no one else did and we were right.”

Warner Records plans to initially take “Austin” to country radio, working in tandem with the promotion team at Warner Music Nashville. This same strategy recently yielded a No. 1 Country Airplay hit for Warner Records artist Warren Zeiders with “Pretty Little Poison.”

“We’ll take this to country radio first, but then we will also take it to pop radio because it is a global song and it deserves that,” Dasha says. “So, I think we are going to work both angles.”

“It’s a two-pronged approach,” Bay-Schuck says. “Obviously, it is everyone’s goal to make ‘Austin’ one of the biggest songs in the world, but never at the sacrifice of telling the artist’s story and solidifying the artist’s proposition. The building of a proper foundation is critical to the mission of never letting a song become bigger than the artist. Our artist development approach will work towards Dasha being accepted and respected by both country audiences and pop audiences, alike.”

It’s not only fans who have taken notice of Dasha’s chart-busting success with “Austin.” She notes that several artists — in the country genre and beyond — have reached out and shown support, but also interest in collaborating.

Dasha says a duet version of “Austin” could potentially be on the horizon. “We’re just trying to figure out what the right collaboration is,” Dasha says. “We’re in no rush, because this song is really just starting, so I think we will wait and see what opportunities come up. I want it to be organic and not a planned business thing — I want to expand the life of the song and give it a new twist.”

Dasha made her television debut of “Austin” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on March 21. Looking ahead, Dasha will make her debut at California’s Stagecoach Music Festival, with performances at Hangout Music Festival, CMA Fest, Lollapalooza and Country Calling Festival set for later this year.

Though she is now signed with a major label, Dasha praises the independent collective that has helped propel the song thus far, including Type A Management and King Publicity.

“Everything you see now is because of the independent, small team of people we put together who believe in me and the song. As a country artist, to be on the cover of the [Spotify] Pop Rising and all this crazy stuff, has been mind-blowing and bigger than I ever could have imagined. I’m so, so grateful.”

Bon Jovi arrived onstage in jeans, a white t-shirt, sneakers and sunglasses, jumping up and down alongside Van Buuren while the producer unveiled his remix of the 1992 Bon Jovi classic “Keep The Faith.” Bon Jovi then climbed up on the decks to sing along with the edit, for which van Buuren added a kickdrum thump to the song’s classic “everybody needs somebody to love” build.

“Ultra make some noise for this legend Mr. Jon Bon Jovi!” van Buuren yelled into the mic as the song came to its climax, with van Buuren outfitting the original with shimmery trance elements and turning the dial all the way up on the chorus as pyro shot from the stage during the climax. A fan in the audience caught video of the moment, with Van Buuren also sharing footage on his Instagram stories.

“It’s an incredible honor to remix this track and to share the stage with Jon Bon Jovi, as I’ve been a massive fan for years,” van Buuren says in a statement. “This track is different from anything I’ve ever released before, and no better place to first share it with you all than on the Ultra mainstage.”

“Keep The Faith” spent 16 weeks on the Hot 100 in the fall of 1992, peaking at No. 29. It’s a busy time for the Bon Jovi frontman, with the band preparing for the release of its 16th studio album, Forever, coming June 9. A docuseries about the band, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, will debut on Hulu April 26 in conjunction with the New Jersey band’s 40th anniversary.

Ultra may be one of the only live appearances in the cards for the iconic Bon Jovi frontman, 61, in the near future, as he is still recovering from a 2022 vocal chord surgery and recently said that he’s not yet sure about touring behind Forever.

“I don’t know about a tour,” Bon Jovi told Mix 104.1 Boston earlier this month. “It is my desire to do a tour next year, but I’m just still recovering from a major surgery.”
