Watch Maren Morris Sing an Impressive, Impromptu Duet on the National Anthem With Stephen Colbert

Maren Morris visited The Late Show on Tuesday night (April 9) to promote her new children’s book and sit on the couch to chat with host Stephen Colbert for the first time after several earlier performances on the show. But the “Circles Around This Town” singer ended up singing anyway after she told Colbert about one of the weirdest gigs she had as a child star.

Considering the 34-year-old has been performing since she was 10, Morris said she has definitely had a “few weirdo ones,” including a number of chili cook-off shows and a weekly Saturday gig during high school singing the National Anthem at amateur wrestling bouts for $100 a shot. “That takes about 90 seconds, so the rest of the night my friends in high school would watch and cheer on these wrestlers,” she said.

“I had the most fun and it was a fun way to make money and be patriotic,” she added. After Morris explained that she did the Anthem a cappella, Colbert asked if they could perform an impromptu duet on the notoriously hard-to-sing “Star-Spangled Banner” sometime. Morris agreed to the request, even as Colbert admitted he only knows the bassline of the song, but cannot sing the melody.

“I think you and I could rock it,” he assured her. Morris was up to the challenge, offering Colbert the sage advice that you need to “start low” or else your voice will run out of road by the sky-high ending. Morris then began singing, with Colbert adding the low notes as they sang directly to each other, with the host leaning into the rumbly bass part as the singer’s voice jumped up during the “rockets’ red glare” portion and Colbert holding a killer from-the-bottom note that made her crack up.

With some gentle acoustic guitar accompaniment from the house band, the pair made it to the end impressively as Morris asked in wonder, “Where did that come from?” Colbert loved it so much he proposed that they do it again at an amateur wrestling match some day, suggesting they could split the $100 fee.

South Carolina-bred Colbert also couldn’t resist talking Southern cuisine with Texas-born Morris, asking the singer if she misses the tastes and smells of home after living in Nashville for 11 years. “That’s South, but they have not figured out Tex-Mex food,” Morris lamented about her adopted home town, saying Music City has great food and culture, but not a hint of her favorite Lone Star flavors.

Morris joked that opening a Tex-Mex joint in Nashville could be next move, though her dream has always been to have her own bar in town called “My Church,” which would, of course, be housed in an old church. The singer also stuck around to promote her new children’s book, Addie Ant Goes on an Adventure, which she co-wrote wit her best friend, Karina Argow.

Travis Kelce Admits He Doesn’t Know How He Wooed Taylor Swift: ‘She Wasn’t Into Sports’

Travis Kelce is aware that he’s a very lucky man. While chatting with guest Lil Dicky on the Wednesday (April 10) episode of his and older brother Jason Kelce’s New Heights podcast, the three-time Super Bowl champion admitted that he’s still perplexed by how successfully he wooed Taylor Swift last year, revealing that the pop star wasn’t even a football fan before he came into the picture.

The topic of Swift first came up when the Dave star remarked that Travis and the “Anti-Hero” singer’s romance is “the best thing ever,” adding, “I think there’s just something that makes everyone feel like the world is like high school, where your most popular pop star beloved musician somehow met your most popular beloved athlete and they actually fell in love and it’s just real.”

“I appreciate it, man,” the tight end responded. “I don’t know how I did it because she wasn’t into sports, so I don’t know how the f–k I did it.”

When Lil Dicky started to remind Travis that he first caught Swift’s eye by mentioning her on a 2023 episode of New Heights — on which the athlete revealed he’d tried and failed to slip the musician a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it at one of her Kansas City Eras Tour shows — the Ohio native hilariously cut the rapper-comedian off.

“Well you did because you called her out on…,” Lil Dicky began, to which Travis asserted, laughing, “No, 100%, I know exactly how I did it.”

Though she may not have paid much attention to the NFL before her romance with No. 87, Swift is definitely tuned in now. The 14-time Grammy winner was present at many of Travis’ Kansas City Chiefs games throughout the 2023-24 season, leading up to her attendance at this year’s Super Bowl, where, after the Chiefs took home their second victory in a row, she kissed her beau on the field.

“This all started when Travis very adorably put me on blast on his podcast, which I thought was metal as hell,” Swift recalled in her December Time cover story. “We started hanging out right after that. By the time I went to that first game, we were a couple.”

Since the football season wrapped in February, Travis has been joining Swift on various Eras stops across the world. The trek is currently on pause as the “Karma” artist gears up to release her new album The Tortured Poets Department on April 19.

BLACKPINK’s Lisa Signs With RCA for Solo Recordings

Lisa, the breakout singer, dancer and actress from the hugely successful K-pop group BLACKPINK, has signed with RCA Records for solo recordings, the parties announced Wednesday (April 10). The deal, a partnership between Lisa and her LLOUD Co. management and creative company with RCA, will allow her to retain ownership of her master recordings.

In addition to her chart-topping work with BLACKPINK, Lisa has made waves with two solo singles, “Lalisa” and “Money,” both of which reached the Billboard Hot 100. She will continue to record for Interscope as part of BLACKPINK.

“I’m super excited to be joining the RCA family and I am confident they are the best team to create a bigger movement in my solo career,” Lisa said in a statement about the news. “Looking forward to showing the world everything we have been preparing.”

Lisa’s most celebrated work so far has been with BLACKPINK, which has released two studio albums in the past few years under YG Entertainment/Interscope: The Album in 2021, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200; and Born Pink in 2022, which reached No. 1 on the chart. The group went on to make history as the first K-pop group to headline Coachella in 2023.

As a solo artist, Lisa has also set a few records of her own, including four Guinness World Records, the latest for “Money” becoming the first solo K-pop track to cross the 1 billion streams threshold on Spotify. And earlier this year, an HBO spokesperson confirmed that Lisa will be part of the cast for the forthcoming third season of the hit show The White Lotus, which will mark her acting debut.

“We are incredibly proud to partner with Lisa and LLOUD Co.,” RCA chairman/CEO Peter Edge and president/COO John Fleckenstein said in a joint statement. “Lisa is a multidimensional talent and an irrefutable global force. We are thrilled to welcome her and her team to the RCA Records family.”

Missy Elliott Gave Cardi B Killer Advice About Staying True to Herself on Second Album: ‘It’s Time to Experiment’

Cardi B has been teasing news about her as-yet-unscheduled, untitled sophomore album for months now. The “Bongos” MC hasn’t given any indication of how far in she is or when we can expect the follow-up to her 2018 smash full-length debut album, Invasion of Privacy, but over the weekend she got some killer advice from Missy Elliott about the importance of listening to your inner voice.

During a Twitter discussion on Saturday about the new LP, a fan suggested, “your second album is not the time to be experimenting… maybe the third album but definitely not the second.. just give people what they need. She still needs to win people back.”

That bit of unsolicited advice elicited a response for legendary rule-breaker Elliott, who responded, “Absolutely yes it’s the time to experiment take it from someone who experimented and many others which allowed them to NOT be BOXED in to one sound and style… I can name tons who each of there albums sounded nothing like the one before [smiley face emoji].”

The sage counsel from Elliott appeared to help Cardi calm her fears, as she replied, “Yeup!!! I’m a little nervous… but I don’t care! I’m liking doing things that my ears want to listen to and reflecting the moods I been in. It feels good.”

Last week, Cardi celebrated the sixth anniversary of Invasion‘s release, while dropping another teaser for her next era. “6 years ago I released my first album and it broke so many records GAH LEE!!” she wrote of the LP that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart and earned a Grammy for best rap album in 2019 while launching the Hot 100 No. 1 singles “Bodak Yellow” and “I Like It.” “6 years later I’m preparing to drop the next one this year.. it’s so different from what everyone is expecting and I’m sooo excited. Love you guys and thank you for the support! I’ll talk to ya soon I been so busy these last few days.”

Cardi dropped the single “Enough (Miami)” on March 15 alongside the Patience Harding-directed video for the track that served as the follow-up to her “Like What (Freestyle).” She’s also featured on the opening track from Shakira’s new Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran album, “Puntería.”

“I have made it my mission to pave the way for future generations of women to be equipped with the tools they need to sit at any table,” said Lowery in a statement. “MUSE has lived in my heart for the last three years, and I am honored to release it into reality as a high-powered program to combat the inequities, disparities and disturbing statistics around the historic underrepresentation of women in the music industry, especially women of color.”

Keys added in comments provided to Billboard: “Finding ways to bring women in this business together to hold each other up and let each other shine is one of my most important missions! I am joining the MUSE program as an advisor because there is never enough we can do to encourage women to feel as comfortable and connected as possible to share their ideas and get their credit. We want to know each other, find each other and hire each other. I am honored to continue to give access and opportunities that will turn into careers because She Is the Music.”

“It is a blessing to join Heather’s MUSE program as an advisor and share the truths about my climb and struggles,” added Taylor. “It looked like I was an overnight success, but that is not the case. God is allowing me to share the lessons I have learned about being a hustler, staying hungry and keeping myself humble. Whoever loves instruction loves knowledge, and I am looking forward to real conversations with my peers and the next generation of female artists so that we can all find success together.”

In their roles as MUSE advisors, the three stars will participate in a moderated conversation and unique Q&A programming, led by Lowery. MUSE has also selected a team of award-winning artists and creatives as hands-on mentors. Those include songwriter/production duo Nova Wav, artists Nija, Jozzy, Rapsody, Trina and Amber Riley plus four-time Grammy-winning engineer Ann Mincieli. Music from FIF’s MUSE Labs will be featured as well in FIF’s second Big Femme Energy music compilation album, slated for late 2024.

Kelly Clarkson Rocks Out Kellyoke Cover of Miley Cyrus and Stevie Nicks’ ‘Edge of Midnight’

Kelly Clarkson got into her rock bag on Monday’s (April 8) episode of the Kelly Clarkson Show, taking the stage for her daily Kellyoke segment in a black leather skirt and vintage Billy Joel concert tee for a rousing run through Miley Cyrus‘ 2020 hit “Midnight Sun.”

The smoldering lead single from Miley’s seventh studio album, Plastic Hearts, is an homage to Stevie Nicks’ 1981 solo hit “Edge of Seventeen,” and in Clarkson’s hands it lost none of the original’s slow-burn energy. “Yeah, it’s been a long night and the mirror’s tellin’ me to go home/ But it’s been a long time since I felt this good on my own/ Lotta years went by with my hands tied up in your ropes/ Forever and ever, no more,” Clarkson sang before busting into the self-assured chorus.

“I was born to run, I don’t belong to anyone, oh no/ I don’t need to be loved by you,” she belted as her backup singers provided soulful support. “Fire in my lungs, can’t bite the devil on my tongue, oh no/ I don’t need to be loved by you.”

Trending on Billboard

Miley’s song topped the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart back in Dec. 2000 and Monday’s cover was the third time Clarkson has dipped into the Cyrus oeuvre during the current season of her daytime talker, following on the heels of her takes on “Jaded” and “Used to Be Young“; back in 2000 she also took on Miley’s OG hit “The Climb.” On Tuesday’s (April 9) show, Clarkson got meta and did a Kellyoke cover of her own song, “Me,” from her 2023 Chemistry album.

Seph Schlueter’s Debut Hit ‘Counting My Blessings’ Tops Christian Airplay Charts

Singer-songwriter Seph Schlueter’s rookie single “Counting My Blessings” rises to No. 1 on Billboard’s Christian Airplay chart (dated April 13), becoming the first leader for the 24-year-old from Sunbury, Ohio. The song increased by 15% to 6.4 million audience impressions March 29-April 5, according to Luminate.

Concurrently, the track dominates Christian AC Airplay for a second week, up 3% in plays.

Schlueter — who signed with Sony Music’s Provident Entertainment in early 2023 — co-authored the song with Jonathan Gamble and Jordan Sapp, the latter of whom also produced it. It’s the lead track from Schlueter’s debut eight-song album of the same name, released in March.

“To see how much of an impact this song has had with people all over the world is so moving and inspiring,” Schlueter tells Billboard. “The whole reason I do this is so that people would come to know Jesus more, and hearing the stories of how God has used ‘Counting My Blessings’ to encourage, remind and touch listener’s hearts, particularly through radio, has been an incredible blessing beyond what I could have imagined.”

Schlueter places the first freshman single atop Christian AC Airplay since Ben Fuller’s “Who I Am” led for a week last November. Meanwhile, “Counting My Blessings” ranks at No. 4 on the streaming-, airplay- and sales-based Hot Christian Songs list. It drew 1.6 million official U.S. streams and sold 1,000 during the tracking week.

Schlueter is currently touring with Matt Maher and Lizzie Morgan. They make their next stop in Naperville, Ill. on Thursday (April 11).

Brown Clark’s ‘Good’ Week

On Billboard’s Gospel Airplay tally, Maurette Brown Clark’s “I See Good” becomes her third No. 1. The song, which she solely wrote, increased by 8% in plays. It’s from her eight-song set He Loves Me, released last November.

Brown Clark last led as featured on James Grear & Company’s “I Wanna Say Thank You,” for a week last November. Before that, “It Ain’t Over (Until God Says It’s Over)” ruled for five frames in 2009. Her first of eight entries, and five top 10s, “One God,” hit No. 2 in 2007.

Olivia Rodrigo Duets With Jewel on ‘You Were Meant For Me’ During Final MSG Show

Olivia Rodrigo closed out her epic four-night stand at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night (April 10) by bringing out yet another surprise guest. The final show on the first North American run of Rodrigo’s GUTS tour found the singer sharing the stage with Jewel, who joined her for a run through the latter’s signature 1995 hit “You Were Meant For Me.”

Always happy to share how the work of her fellow artist’s has inspired her, Rodrigo told the crowd, “She is such an incredible songwriter. When I first started writing my songs, I would listen to her album Pieces of You before I went to bed. She’s incredible and it’s such an honor that she’s here with me tonight.”

Then Jewel, 49, joined Rodrigo, 21, on stage and they both strummed acoustic guitars as the pair took turns singing verses from the gentle ballad featured on Jewel’s breakthrough 1995 Pieces of You album, with the women joining forces on the choruses of the track that hit No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Conan Gray Reveals What Made Him Realize ‘I Have to Live My Life’

Last week, pop star Conan Gray released his vibrant third album Found Heaven — and soon before, he stopped by Billboard News to discuss everything from falling in love for the first time to working with Max Martin to bring that feeling to life.

“It very much affected how I made the music,” says Gray, who also shares that “this whole album is highs and lows.”

He says he started the ideation process during his Superache Tour nearly two years ago. As he recalls, after each performance he would retreat to the basement “because there’s always a piano in the basement of these theaters I was playing… that’s when I would notice these different themes I was writing about.”

He later tapped the MXM songwriting and production crew of Max Martin, ILYA and Oscar Holter to help flesh those various themes out, saying they “really opened up my eyes and wings to all of the different sides of myself that I could try out. … They wanted to push me to do something that was the whole array of me.”

And while Found Heaven does boast power-pop hits like “Never Ending Song” and “Lonely Dancers,” the album also features more intimate songs like “Forever With Me,” album closer “Winner” and standout track “Alley Rose.” As Gray says, “When I first recorded [‘Alley Rose’], I recorded it in the same voice as the rest of the album, a bit more energetically. And then I was like, ‘Wait, I need to not do that. I need to sing it as calm and tender as possible — each song requires a different part of me. … I feel lucky that people give me the space to do both.”

Gray also opened up about the love that inspired much of this album — and the heartbreak he had to process soon after. As he tells it, after flying to London for their scheduled meet-up, he landed to a text ultimately ending the relationship. And yet, he wouldn’t change a thing about his experiences surrounding Found Heaven — and his necklace of a star cutout inside a teardrop is a reminder of exactly that.

“In all the things that make you cry, the happiest moments of your life and the saddest moments of your life, there is a magic in the fact that you even got to experience it at all,” says Gray. “I’ve spent so many years of my life hiding in my room and not doing anything and being so afraid of ever getting hurt or rejected or feeling bad, that I ended up living no life. I kept this on my neck the whole time I was making this album [as a reminder] that I have to live my life.”

To hear what else Gray said of his latest album, watch the full interview above.
