Carin León Mends Broken Hearts With Vibrant & Soulful Coachella Debut

Over the past years, Coachella has been committed to integrating regional Mexican music into its lineup, with previous performers including Banda MS, Grupo Firme, Natanael Cano and Los Tucanes de Tijuana. This year, among the música mexicana stars were Peso Pluma and Carin León, both making their Coachella debut this year — a nod to the genre’s continued global and mainstream rise.

On Sunday (April 14), before León took the main stage around 5:30 p.m. to chants of “Carin, Carin,” a video played showing images of the singer face-to-face with a potent lion who runs wild across a desert. The ferocious animal is then immortalized onstage with a massive wooden-shaped lion wearing a tejana (cowboy hat) erected in the background.

The sun was beginning to set in Indio, Calif., when León took the stage, and it was the perfect vibe for his soulful tunes and tremendous vocals that roared across the desert and pulled spectators that perhaps had never heard of the Sonora-born artist. With his live band — consisting of more than 20 musicians that played the tuba, accordion, guitars and drums, among other instruments — León didn’t hold back in his performance, understanding the significance of this moment on the main stage.

Viva México chingada madre,” he said, extra prideful of being Mexican, and representing a genre that has long been a backbone of Latin music. “Dónde están dolidos (Where are those who are hurting)?” he asked, setting the tone for a set that could mend broken hearts. He began singing the hits early on, not wanting to waste a minute, from “Me La Aventé” to “Te Lo Agradezco,” “Corazón de Oro” and his bilingual country song with Kane Brown, “The One (Pero No Como Yo).”

It didn’t take long for León to get ahold of a Mexican flag, which he held onto tightly. He then burst into the hip-swiveling “Que Vuelvas,” his collab with Grupo Frontera. Of course, it was a perfect opportunity for him to showcase his mesmerizing dance moves that have now become a staple at his shows. The irresistible huapango “La Boda del Huitlacoche” followed, which inspired a massive sing-along, and fans couldn’t help but show off their zapateado moves, literally dancing up a storm in the desert.

He transitioned to rock en español with a spot-on cover of Hombres G’s “Te Quiero.” And after that, he brought out Mau y Ricky for “Llorar y Llorar,” marking the duo’s first time at Coachella. Nearing the end of his almost 50-minute set, he winded down with a fan-favorite, “Si Una Vez,” honoring one of the greats, Selena Quintanilla, and then went on to perform “Primera Cita.”

“Thank you for this first time,” he said before stepping off the stage. “Arriba la raza, arriba Coachella, but more than anything, arriba la música.” He closed with the hit song “Según Quién,” his 2023 collab with Maluma.

Other Latin artists who performed at Coachella this year included Young Miko, Bizarrap, Santa Fe Klan, Ludmilla and J Balvin, who was night three’s pre-headliner (just before headliner Doja Cat).

León is also set to also make his Stagecoach debut on Friday, April 26.

Olivier Awards 2024: ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and Star Nicole Scherzinger Win Big

A radical restaging of Hollywood film noir musical Sunset Boulevard was the big winner on Sunday (April 14) at the London stage Olivier Awards, taking seven trophies including best musical revival and best actress for American star Nicole Scherzinger.

Soccer-themed state-of-the-nation drama Dear England was named best new play, while Sarah Snook and Mark Gatiss were among the acting winners.

Scherzinger was rewarded for her performance as fading silver screen star Norma Desmond in a flashy revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, three decades after the musical’s 1990s debut. Her co-star Tom Francis won the corresponding best actor prize as a struggling screenwriter fatefully drawn into Desmond’s orbit.

Trending on Billboard

Jamie Lloyd took the directing trophy for the technically innovative production, which melds live video with the onstage action and also won Oliviers for sound and lighting design. It’s due to open in New York later this year, and Lloyd predicted it would “take Broadway by storm.”

Scherzinger said that when she was growing up in Kentucky, “I always wanted to be a singer and do musicals.”

“I dreamed of so many roles I wanted to do — and honestly this role, Norma Desmond, was not one of those roles,” she said. “But God works in mysterious ways.”

The prize for best new musical went to Operation Mincemeat, a word-of-mouth hit based on an audacious real-life espionage operation that deceived the Nazis during World War II. The show began life in a tiny theater in 2019 and has moved to progressively larger venues, gathering accolades along the way.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow, a dazzlingly staged prequel to the Netflix supernatural series, was named best new entertainment or comedy.

The Oliviers — the U.K. equivalent of Broadway’s Tony Awards — are celebrating a bumper year for new shows in the West End, finally bouncing back from the COVID-19 pandemic. Several winners lamented the soaring cost of theater tickets, and cuts to arts education that are squeezing working-class talent out of theatrical careers and theater audiences.

“If you don’t tell a kid to go and see a show … they’re not going to develop that habit, they’re not going to get that experience,” said Dear England playwright James Graham, who grew up in a small mining town. “So I am really worried.”

But the mood was largely celebratory as Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham presided over an exuberant ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall, opening the show by belting out “Anything Goes” alongside the London Community Gospel Choir. The show was peppered with performances from several of the nominated musicals, including Guys and Dolls, Hadestown and homegrown hit The Little Big Things.

The prizes, which recognize achievements in theater, opera and dance, were founded in 1976 and named for the late actor-director Laurence Olivier. Winners are chosen by voting groups of stage professionals and theatergoers.

Snook – the scheming Shiv Roy in Succession – beat a talented field including Sarah Jessica Parker and Sophie Okonedo to be named best actress in a play for The Picture of Dorian Gray, an adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s cautionary fable in which Snook plays more than two dozen characters.

Backstage, the Emmy Award-winning Australian performer said the solo stage show was “so much harder” than doing TV.

“I’ve never done anything harder than this,” said Snook, who said she’d asked herself “why am I doing a 60,000-word monologue with an 8-month-old baby?” She revealed she’d learned her lines for the play during filming of the final series of Succession, at night while breastfeeding her daughter.

Gatiss — co-creator of the BBC TV series Sherlock — won the best actor trophy for playing theater great John Gielgud in The Motive and the Cue, Jack Thorne’s play about the struggle to mount a 1964 production of Hamlet with Richard Burton.

Gatiss recalled that Gielgud had considered awards ceremonies “vulgar.”

“I’m very, very thrilled to be in such wonderfully vulgar company,” he said.

Gatiss beat Dear England star Joseph Fiennes and Andrew Scott, who had been the favorite to win for the solo show Vanya. The Anton Chekhov adaptation by Simon Stephens took the prize for best revival.

Will Close was named best supporting actor in a play for his performance as footballer Harry Kane in Dear England.

Haydn Gwynne, who died in October, was posthumously awarded the best supporting actress prize for her final stage role in When Winston Went to War with the Wireless, about the early days of radio in Britain.

Awards for supporting performances in musicals were Amy Trigg for The Little Big Things and Jak Malone for Operation Mincemeat.

The show ended with a tribute to the National Theatre, which turned 60 in 2023 — culminating in a star-studded cast singing the anthem “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Dua Lipa Set as ‘SNL’ Host and Musical Guest on May 4

Dua Lipa will be pulling double duty on SNL in May.

Fans in the comments section on Instagram couldn’t help but pull out the puns upon seeing Dua Lipa’s name tacked up twice on the SNL board — among their quips were “Dual Lipa,” “Duo Lipa” and “Double Lipa.”

Dua Lipa just released her new single “Illusion,” the third from upcoming album Radical Optimism, which arrives May 3.

“‘Illusion’ was the first song Caroline [Ailin], Danny [Harle], Tobias [Jesso Jr.], Kevin [Parker] and I worked on together, and it really broke the ice for the record,” the singer shared in a press statement. “It’s about knowing what you’re getting yourself into, but staying for the hell of it. The joke’s on them, it’s the fun of playing someone at their own game because ultimately you won’t fall for an illusion.”

On the latest episode of SNL to air, host Ryan Gosling parodied a Ken-inspired version of Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well” during his monologue, while Chris Stapleton performed his songs “White Horse” and “Mountains of My Mind” and played the ex in the musical sketch “Get That Boy Back” starring Chloe Troast, Ego Nwodim and Chloe Fineman.

DJ Akademiks Premieres Alleged Diss Tracks From Drake and Rick Ross

Drake appeared to respond to Kendrick Lamar and a myriad of other rap peers with a diss track of his own that’s tentatively titled “Push Ups.”

Perhaps the rollout wasn’t what the 6 God envisioned, with a leaked unmastered version hitting the internet on Saturday (April 13). Some fans questioned the track’s legitimacy as a contingent on social media speculated it was AI-generated.

Hours later, DJ Akademiks squashed the fan theories and got his hands on the CDQ mixed edition of “Push Ups” to premiere the scathing diss for the world to hear.

It wasn’t only Kendrick Lamar that Drake appeared to take aim at with his response to K. Dot’s scorching “Like That” verse that set the rap game on fire. Future, Metro Boomin, The Weeknd, Rick Ross and more were supposedly in the 6 God’s crosshairs on the track.

Drake jabbed Lamar about his small stature and the financial splits on his contract when it came to his deal with Top Dawg Entertainment.

“How the f— you big steppin’ with a size seven men’s on/ Your last one bricked, you really not on s— / They make excuses for you ’cause they hate to see me lit / Pull your contract ’cause we gotta see the split / Ain’t no way you doin’ splits b—- your pants might rip,” he raps.

Drake then turns his attention to Rick Ross and puts his correction officer past on blast and takes credit for lending him plenty of Hot 100 hits with their collaborations like “Gold Roses,” “Money in the Grave,” “Stay Schemin’” and more.

“I might take your latest girl and cuff her like I’m Ricky/ Can’t believe he jumpin’ in, this n—- turnin’ 50/ Every song that made it on the chart, he got from Drizzy/ Spend that lil’ check you got and stay up out my business,” he spews.

Rick Ross didn’t waste any time in returning fire with his “Champagne Moments” diss coming at the OVO boss. Akademiks premiered the record which finds the MMG mogul saying Drake stole Lil Wayne’s flow and alleged that he got a nose job in the past.

“That’s why you had an operation to make your nose smaller than your father nose,” he raps.

Ross didn’t stop there as he continued to clown Drake by posting side-by-side photos of his face to his Instagram Story while referring to him as “BBL Drizzy.”

Drake responded by sharing a text message conversation with his mom on Sunday (April 14) regarding the alleged nose job while calling Ross a “nosey goof.”

“I can’t believe you would get one without me, cuz you know I always wanted one,” she joked while Drake replied, “I would have got us a 2 for 1 deal if I went ma. It’s coming from Rick Ross the guy I did songs with he’s gone loopy off the Mounjaro he hasn’t eaten in days and it’s turned him angry and racist he’s performing at proms for money it’s bad.”

Kendrick Lamar is yet to react to Drake’s “Push Up,” which hasn’t hit streaming services as of press time. Find more of the social media banter between Drizzy and Rozay below.

Drake Reacts to Rick Ross’ Nose Job Claim on Diss Track: ‘Don’t Worry We’ll Handle It’

Drake is responding to Rick Ross‘ claim on a diss track that he had a nose job.

On Sunday (April 14), the Toronto rapper took to his Instagram Story to share a screenshot of a text message conversation with his mother, Sandi Graham. In the text, Sandi playfully addressed online rumors about her son allegedly getting his nose fixed.

“Aubs- the internet is saying you got a nose job?? You looked the same to me in the kitchen today,” Drizzy’s mom begins her message. “I can’t believe you would get one without me … cuz you know I always wanted one. Don’t tell me that you got tattoos without me and now this too?”

Drake’s response began with numerous tears of joy emojis before writing, “I would have got us a 2 for 1 deal if I went ma.”

The superstar rapper then explained that it was Rozay who made the claim.

“It’s coming from Rick Ross the guy I did songs with he’s gone loopy off the Mounjaro he hasn’t eaten in days and it’s turned him angry and racist he’s performing at proms for money it’s bad don’t worry we’ll handle it,” Drake wrote, referencing the weight loss drug.

The 6 God’s post also tagged Ross’ @richforever account and included the words, “You’re one nosey goof.”

Drake’s IG Story post was in response to Ross’ diss track “Champagne Moments,” which arrived on Saturday (April 13) following Drizzy’s purportedly real “Push Ups (Drop and Give Me Fifty)” leaked earlier in the day.

On “Push Ups,” which had not seen an official release at press time, Drake mostly fires back at Kendrick Lamar and Metro Boomin, but he also takes aim at Ross.

“I might take your latest girl and cuff her like I’m Ricky/ Can’t believe he jumpin’ in, this n—a turnin’ 50/ Every song that made it on the chart, he got from Drizzy/ Spend that lil’ check you got and stay up out my business,” Drake raps.

On “Champagne Moments,” Ross calls Drake a “white boy” and claims he lifted his style from Lil Wayne. Rozay also alleges that the “God’s Plan” rapper employs ghost writers and had cosmetic surgery.

“That’s why you had an operation to make your nose smaller than your father nose,” Ross raps.

On Sunday, following Drake’s IG Story post, Ross shared a video of himself responding to the text message screenshot.

“I just realized BBL Drizzy called his mommy on me,” Ross said in the Instagram Story clip, which included a nose emoji. “He shared their text messages between each other. Ah, cupcake Drake. Tell your momma you stayed out past your curfew, white boy. You wanted to hang at the park with the n—as, smoke weed with the n—as while we washed our old school Chevys.”

He added, “White boy, you got a Chevy, white boy? I doubt it. But, anyway, big nose. Boy you had 25% body fat with a carved-out six piece. Stop, we know what time it is. That s— cost 40 bands. Stop, but tell your momma… tell your old girl she a beautiful lady. I told you that before and I meant that, but you tell your momma, white boy, you stayed out at the park too late and you can’t call her when you get in this s—. Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’ Scores Second Week Atop Billboard 200

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter holds atop the Billboard 200 albums chart (dated April 20), after debuting at No. 1 a week ago, as the set earned 125,500 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending April 11 (down 69%), according to Luminate.

With a second week in the lead, Cowboy Carter has the most weeks at No. 1 for any Beyoncé album since her self-titled set spent three weeks at No. 1 (its first three weeks on the chart), in December 2013 and January 2014.

Of Beyoncé’s eight No. 1 albums on the Billboard 200, three have spent two or more weeks at No. 1: Cowboy Carter (two, 2024), her self-titled effort (three, in 2013-14) and 4 (two, 2011). (Since her self-titled effort, she’s topped the list three more times, with Lemonade [one week at No. 1, 2016], Renaissance [one week, 2022] and now Cowboy Carter.)

Trending on Billboard

Elsewhere on the Billboard 200, and for the first time in 2024, three albums debut in the top 10 at the same time, as the latest releases from J. Cole, TOMORROW X TOGETHER and Benson Boone start at Nos. 2, 3 and 6, respectively. The last time the top 10 housed three debuts was on the Nov. 25, 2023-dated list, when Stray Kids, Chris Stapleton and Chris Brown saw their newest albums bow in the region.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new April 20, 2024-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on April 16. For all chart news, follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on both X, formerly known as Twitter, and Instagram.

Of Cowboy Carter’s second-week unit sum of 125,500, SEA units comprise 103,000 (down 54%, equaling 132.69 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), traditional album sales comprise 20,500 (down 88%) and TEA units comprise 2,000 (down 70%).

While Cowboy Carter’s CD and vinyl editions were available to purchase only via Beyoncé’s official webstore in the set’s first two weeks of release, those physical configurations became widely available to all retailers beginning on April 12. (The album has also been purchasable as a digital download, widely, since its release on March 29.)

At No. 2 on the Billboard 200, J. Cole’s surprise-release album Might Delete Later arrives with 115,000 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, SEA units comprise 105,000 (equaling 137.95 million on-demand official streams of the set’s 12 songs), album sales comprise 9,000 and TEA units comprise 1,000. The album was only available to stream or to purchase as a digital download.

Might Delete Later was issued on April 5 without warning, and boasts collaborations with Gucci Mane, Cam’ron, Bas, Central Cee, Ari Lennox and Young Dro, among others.

Might Delete Later drew attention for its Kendrick Lamar diss track “7 Minute Drill,” which appears to find Cole responding to Lamar’s apparent disses directed at Cole and Drake on Future and Metro Boomin’s “Like That.” A few days after the release of “7 Minute Drill,” Cole publicly apologized for releasing the track, saying it “don’t sit right with my spirit.” Ultimately, “7 Minute Drill” was removed from the tracklist of the streaming edition of Might Delete Later on April 12, one day after the end of the latest chart’s tracking week. (As of April 14, the song was still available on the digital download edition of the set.) “7 Minute Drill” was the most-streamed song on Might Delete Later during the album’s opening week.

Might Delete Later is J. Cole’s seventh album to reach the top two rungs on the Billboard 200, after he notched six earlier No. 1s in 2011-21. He has logged one other entry on the list, with the Forest Hills Drive: Live, which hit No. 71 in 2016.

TOMORROW X TOGETHER notches its fifth top 10-charting album on the Billboard 200, as Minisode 3: TOMORROW debuts at No. 3 with 107,500 equivalent album units earned. Of that sum, album sales comprise 103,500 (making it the top-selling album of the week), SEA units comprise 4,000 (equaling 5.54 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum. The album’s sales were supported by its availability across 17 collectible CD editions (including exclusive editions sold by Barnes & Noble, Target and the act’s webstore), all containing randomized paper merchandise (but with the same audio tracklist).

With the Nos. 1-3 titles on the Billboard 200 each earning at least 100,000 equivalent album units, it’s the first time we’ve had as many albums clear 100,000 in a week since the Dec. 2, 2023-dated list. That week, Drake’s For All the Dogs jumped 4-1 with 145,000, Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) held at No. 2 with 137,000 and Dolly Parton’s Rockstar debuted at No. 3 with 128,000.

Future and Metro Boomin’s chart-topping We Don’t Trust You falls 2-4 in its third week on the list, earning 99,000 equivalent album units (down 24%). The set’s sequel album, We Still Don’t Trust You, was released on April 12 and will impact next week’s chart dated April 27.

Morgan Wallen’s former leader One Thing at a Time is pushed down 3-5, despite a 4% gain, with 72,000 equivalent album units earned.

Benson Boone’s debut full-length studio album, Fireworks & Rollerblades, skates in at No. 6 with 58,000 equivalent album units earned. It’s the first chart entry for the singer-songwriter. Of the set’s starting sum, SEA units comprise 52,000 (equaling 70.21 million on-demand official streams of the set’s songs), album sales comprise 4,000 (largely from its digital download, as the set’s only physical availability was through a limited release on CD) and TEA units comprise 2,000. The album was led by the hit single “Beautiful Things” (the most-streamed song on the set), which has spent the last nine weeks inside the top five on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart (through the list dated April 13), peaking at No. 2.

Ariana Grande’s chart-topping Eternal Sunshine falls 4-7 on the Billboard 200 with 48,000 equivalent album units earned (down 17%), Noah Kahan’s Stick Season slips 7-8 (though up 2%) with 45,000 units, Olivia Rodrigo’s former No. 1 Guts dips 6-9 with 43,000 (down 13%) and SZA’s chart-topping SOS drops 9-10, though with a 1% gain, to 40,000 units.

Grimes Apologizes for ‘Major Technical Difficulties’ During Coachella 2024 Set

Grimes is apologizing for her set at Coachella 2024.

On Sunday morning (April 14), the 36-year-old musician took to social media to share a lengthy statement about the “technical issues” during her Sahara tent performance at the Indio, Calif., music festival on Saturday night.

“I want to apologize for the technical issues with the show tonight. I wanted to come back rly strong and usually I always handle every aspect of my show myself – to save time this was one of the first times I’ve outsourced essential things like rekordbox bpm’s and letting someone else organize the tracks on the sd card etc.,” Grimes began her message on X (formerly Twitter).

“i had a bad feeling beforehand not having run everything thru the cdjs myself and tho I flagged it I wasn’t insistent. the big lesson for me was a mix of 1 if u want it done right, do it yrself 2 be a c–t even if ppl feel bad 3 probably pretend it’s fine and engage w the crowd rather than spend a whole show slumped over the desk trying to fix software when ur meant to be entertaining.”

At about the halfway point of her 50-minute set, Grimes was forced to restart “Music 4 Machines” multiple times because the track was playing at double the speed.

“This s— always f—ing happens, all my tracks are twice as fast so I’m not mixing very well, so I’m going to keep trying, and I appreciate you being here,” she told the crowd. “There has never been a Grimes show without a major technical difficulty. But yes, it will continue.”

Fan-captured video of Grimes’ Coachella set shows her yelling out in frustration over the “major technical difficulties” during the performance.

In her statement on X, she continued, “I will personally organize all the files next week. I will not let such a thing happen again. I’ve spent months on this show, making music and visuals, and admittedly am not in the best mood atm … But, yeh – next week will be flawless, everything will run thru my hands.”

Grimes closed her note, writing, “Some good lessons learned. Bless y’all. The cdjs were showing me bpms like 370 so I couldn’t even mix manually by ear and the front monitors were off so it was literally sonic chaos on my end trying to guess how stuff was sounding for u guys … Plz forgive me! Love, always.”

Day three of Coachella continues on Sunday (April 14) with performances by Doja Cat, J Balvin, Jhené Aiko, Lil Yachty, and many more.
