Metro Boomin Donates $100,000 in Honor of His Late Mother

Metro Boomin is giving back to his hometown of St. Louis in honor of his late mother.

The producer—who’s fresh off two back-to-back number one albums—recently announced $100,000 in donations for five St. Louis nonprofits centered around women. According to Variety, he partnered with Rung for Women and Amazon Access to give Almost Home, Diamond Diva Empowerment Foundation, the Haven of Grace, the Little Bit Foundation, and Parents as Teachers $20,000 each. The money will help women in need with things like debt, utilities, childcare, and rent.

“I’ve seen firsthand the work that goes into being a single mother. Mine was my inspiration and my hero,” the producer said in a statement. “It’s very important to me to pay it forward, because I see the same resilience and dedication in the women these organizations work with.”

The funds were raised during the Leslie Joanne Soirée holiday event held at Rung in partnership with Amazon Access in December. “We are excited to partner with Metro Boomin in his work to lift up single mothers in St. Louis,” said Rung’s president Leslie Gill. “Inspired by the remarkable love he has for his late mother, he is demonstrating a commitment to women and to our community.” Rung for Women is also Metro’s fiduciary agent as he gets ready to launch his own independent nonprofit foundation.

Metro’s late mother, Leslie Joanne Wayne, was the victim of domestic violence. In 2022, she was murdered by her husband who then killed himself. Ms. Wayne famously used to drive Metro from St. Louis to Atlanta during the start of his career so he could connect with rappers he met online.

Jeff Chang Is Ending One Chapter & Beginning Another With Final ‘Continuum’ Tour

On June 12, 1998, Jeff Chang captivated audiences with his inaugural major concert on the Chinese mainland at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium, appropriately titled “Dream Comes True.” Little could he have foreseen that 26 years later, in 2024, he would triumphantly bring the “Continuum” ultimate edition to a crowd of 80,000 at the Shanghai Stadium.

The recent April showcase in Shanghai marked the debut of the “Continuum” ultimate edition. Despite the acclaim garnered by the six-year “Continuum” tour, transitioning from versions 1.0 to 2.0 and now the ultimate edition, Jeff Chang confesses to occasionally experiencing a vague, inexplicable “sense of powerlessness.” “Last year’s tour was a resounding success, yet some critics implied that our performance might not suit our generation of singers.”

Some view classic concepts as relics of the past, valuable only for evoking nostalgia. This perspective was one of the driving forces behind Jeff Chang’s decision to embark on the “Continuum” concerts: “I aim to guide audiences towards a more mature appreciation of music, challenging established perceptions along the way.”

Trending on Billboard

Physically, the Shanghai Stadium is a mere 100 meters from the Shanghai Indoor Stadium. Yet, for Jeff Chang, this distance represents a 26-year odyssey. Reflecting on this journey at the “Continuum,” Jeff Chang remarked, “I’ve traversed this 100-meter distance over 26 years!” This metaphor succinctly encapsulates his unwavering dedication to music, with music serving as the cornerstone of his endeavors over his 35-year career.

Embarking on the Future Together with the Audience

Kicking off the “Continuum” ultimate edition concert is Jeff Chang’s 2000 smash hit “Faith.” His unwavering passion for music embodies a spirit of “warm and courageous” faith. Perhaps it is this steadfast belief in music that brings Jeff Chang and his fans together at the “Continuum” concerts, where they experience the soul-stirring power in Jeff Chang’s voice that resonates with the vitality of life itself.

“As a singer with a certain degree of seniority, my audience is already deeply familiar with my songs; we have grown and supported each other mutually,” Jeff Chang reflects. “I aspire for my musical journey and growth to keep pace with the progress of my fans, rather than remaining stagnant. The ‘Continuum’ concerts were conceived with the intention of demonstrating to fans that my music will not dwell solely in memories and nostalgia, but will embark a new future alongside everyone.”

“Each segment of the ‘Continuum’ concert has a message we wish to convey to the audience. We have carefully selected songs that hold significant meaning in my music career, even if they are not the most popular hits. In each of my albums, I aim to impart insights, concepts, and musical knowledge. Through the concert’s overall arrangement, I hope to convey the concept of ’embarking on the future together with the audience.’”

Ending One Chapter, Beginning Another

The term “ultimate” in Jeff Chang’s “Continuum” concert signifies that this six-year “Continuum” tour is finally approaching a perfect conclusion. “The ‘Continuum’ has been a prolonged journey, and it’s time for a stage-wise ending. There are other musical endeavors that are equally essential for me.”

The conclusion of one stage signifies the commencement of a new chapter. The “Continuum” ultimate edition serves as a gentle reminder from Jeff Chang, urging us to seize every opportunity to gather offline and experience the music before the final show arrives.

As the first Chinese singer to perform in Dubai, the Dubai stop of the “Continuum” ultimate edition in June holds significant importance for Jeff Chang. “We’re committed to making it happen in Dubai. Sometimes, overseas organizers prefer a simplified concert where the singer merely performs, and everything else is automated. But that’s not enough for me; I want to fully recreate the ‘Continuum’ experience in overseas shows.”

If he could dream big, where would Jeff Chang choose to host the final “Continuum” concert? Surprisingly, his answer is Easter Island, situated in the South Pacific: “It’s like the ‘navel of the world,’ equidistant from all continents. Holding a concert on Easter Island would truly be the ‘ultimate’ experience, like singing at the edge of the world for everyone to hear.”

Embrace the Future

After completing all the performances of the “Continuum” ultimate edition, Jeff Chang will focus on the creation of a new album. It has been three years since the release of his last album See the Light, and Jeff Chang, along with his devoted fans, eagerly anticipates the arrival of this new work. “Currently, the songs for the new album are nearly finalized, with around 80% of the track list already set.”

For him, the greatest challenge of this new album lies in the significantly increased proportion of “non-love songs.” “In the new album, I may relatively reduce the love songs and express more of my perspectives and sentiments regarding the world. I feel that my past classic love songs have already encompassed most of the emotional states. Therefore, I believe it is time to start singing about matters beyond love, using the album to convey broader ideas.”

Jeff Chang describes the new album as an adventurous state of “taking a step forward” out of his comfort zone. Compared to his previous love songs, the new album will be more critical, and a more quintessential expression of his Aries personality. “In the past, my love songs stood at the observational standpoint, simply singing the feelings of the protagonist. But this time, I will stand on a clearer ‘Jeff Chang’ perspective, to openly express my own attitude, and be more subjective.”

The backstage machinery of the “Continuum” concert is intricate, with over 20 lifts waiting for the performer to step onstage. Rising and falling on the lifts, it’s like facing the peaks and valleys of life – this is the norm for a singer. From the beginning to the present and into the future, Jeff Chang and the audience have always been there; the performance never stops.

Nile Rodgers & Esa-Pekka Salonen Celebrated as 2024 Laureates at Sweden’s Polar Music Prize

Nile Rodgers, the award-winning songwriter, composer, producer and guitarist and co-founder of Chic, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, world-renowned composer and conductor and the current music director for the San Francisco Symphony, received their 2024 Polar Music Prizes from the hands of King Carl XVI Gustaf at a royal ceremony held at Stockholm’s Grand Hotel on Tuesday night (May 21).

The Polar Music Prize was first presented to Paul McCartney and the Baltic States in 1992 after it was founded and funded by Stig “Stikkan” Anderson, manager of ABBA and a songwriter in his own right, as well as a music publisher and label owner.

Rodgers spoke from the heart when accepting his award from the king. “I know that music changes lives,” Rodgers told the audience of over 300 guests. “I’ve been told, ‘Artists are the gatekeepers of truth.’ I am honored to be here tonight in such distinguished company. Congratulations to the outstanding Esa-Pekka Salonen and all the past recipients of the Polar Music Prize. To have been acknowledged in the same way as Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin, Chuck Berry, Joni Mitchell, Ennio Morricone and so many more of my heroes is a dream come true.

“I would like to give a very special thanks to the Polar Music Prize for recognizing so many artists of color, and to the people of Sweden for welcoming us with open arms, from Eric Dolphy and Miles Davis to Jimi Hendrix, way before most people did. I say this from the bottom of my heart: We are family.”

Speeches aside, it was a full night of music as Swedish artists performed the music of the two Laureates. Among the many Rodgers hits heard during the ceremony and banquet were “We Are Family,” “Le Freak,” “Get Lucky,” “Good Times,” “I’m Coming Out,” “Material Girl,” “Let’s Dance,” “Spacer” and “Everybody Dance.” Salonen’s music was represented by many classical pieces and a stunning rendition of “Innan Kärleken Kom” (“Before Love Came”) sung by Eva Dahlgren, who wrote the lyrics for a 1995 album. Salonen was the conductor on the track. Dahlgren, a nine-time Swedish Grammys winner, received a standing ovation after her performance.

Near the end of the royal banquet, Polar Music Prize managing director Marie Ledin, the daughter of the late Stig Anderson, told the assembled guests of her personal connections to the two Laureates.

“When I was younger, I loved dancing,” she said. “Every weekend I would dress up, and my friends and I would hit the dance floors and in all the clubs, night after night, the DJs played the irresistible music of Chic and Sister Sledge – songs that made us move and are to this day a memorable part of my younger days.”

Then Ledin reached back for another memory. “In 1995 I had the privilege of sitting in Berwaldhallen [a concert hall in Stockholm] to hear a young but brilliant conductor rehearse the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. I clearly remember how he suddenly stopped the orchestra as he apparently noticed one wrong note in the score. I was astonished. How was that possible? Not only to hear that tiny mistake but then to bring the whole 70-piece orchestra to a halt in an instant. I was impressed. Of course, that conductor was our Laureate, Esa-Pekka Salonen.”

Rodgers and Salonen join a long list of Laureates who have been awarded the Prize over the last 32 years, including Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, B. B. King, Burt Bacharach, Sting, Renée Fleming, Elton John, Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Quincy Jones, Yo-Yo Ma, Max Martin, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Angélique Kidjo, Patti Smith, Wayne Shorter, Björk, Metallica, Diane Warren, Ray Charles, Ravi Shankar, Chris Blackwell, Dizzy Gillespie, Miriam Makeba, Iggy Pop, Grandmaster Flash, Yousou N’Dour, Gilberto Gil, Sonny Rollins and Isaac Stern.

TWICE Opens Up About Finding Balance Between K-Pop Stardom & Mental Health

A lot rests on the nine pairs of shoulders that make up TWICE.

As one of K-pop‘s leading girl groups, the members have worked for years to juggle their personal lives, full-band activities and, in the case of a few of them, solo careers — all of which Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung and Tzuyu opened up about in their new Teen Vogue cover.

Named one of the publication’s top girl bands of all time, TWICE got candid in the cover story published Tuesday (May 21) about finding balance between stardom and mental health in the years since their 2015 debut. “We’re completely different [from our idol selves],” said Nayeon. “Idols do have to use a lot of energy, and there is kind of a limit to how much a person can use their energy. We push all of that [away] while being an idol.”

“During our debut era, it was really busy,” Sana shared. “When people ask, ‘Are you tired?’ we’ll say, ‘Oh no, we’re not tired.’ ‘Are you busy?’ ‘Oh, we’re not busy.’ Now I express myself better when I’m tired. When I look back on it, I think, Did I really have to say the opposite of what I was feeling all these years?”

Trending on Billboard

“During concerts, I give my all,” added Momo. “But when I come back down the stage, I [take it easy] and relax right after.”

“I’m trying to be more generous to myself,” Jeongyeon chimed in. “Although that’s not always working, I’m trying really hard.”

A spectrum of public scrutiny bookended by overzealous fans and harsh critics also comes with the territory of international stardom, something the girls of TWICE know all too well. But that’s where having nine members comes in handy, according to Jihyo, as it allows the bandmates to share the burden amongst themselves.

“We’re really thankful [that we have] nine members,” she explained. “For one person, one member can be their favorite and they might not like the rest, but because we push our team of nine together, the team vibes are really good. We’re really thankful because of that. And because of that, we actually get a lot closer.”

TWICE recently scored its first-ever No. 1 entry on the Billboard 200 with With YOU-th, which debuted in the top spot earlier this month. The six-track EP features the songs “I Got You,” “One Spark,” “Rush,” “New New,” “Bloom” and “You Get Me.”

Earlier this year, the group also returned for one last show in the U.S. for the Ready to Be Tour at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium, performing songs from their own discography as well as covers of Dua Lipa’s “New Rules” and Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings.”

JoJo Siwa Shares ‘Drunk As F—‘ 21st Birthday TikTok, Reveals She Got ‘Punched in the Eye’

JoJo Siwa is ringing in 21 with a bang.

The “Karma” singer took to TikTok on her birthday on Sunday (May 21) to share a tipsy video amid her celebratory festivities. “It’s my 21st birthday. I’m drunk as f— right now,” she tells the camera in the clip, appearing to be in her kitchen with bottles of alcohol on the counter behind her. An off-camera friend then throws a piece of bread her way, and Siwa picks it up off the ground after missing it, and eats it.

“I got punched in the eye,” she revealed, showing a bump on her left eye. “It was really bad, but I’m OK.”

Siwa came out strong to announce her more adult era in April with a new look, a new single titled “Karma” and a new attitude, but after comments she made to Billboard in an interview about how she is forging a trail for a new brand of LGBTQ-friendly pop raised some questions, the singer clarified her original statement in a TMZ video.

“I think I just want to make it more clear that gay pop is a genre,” Siwa said. “I am not the inventor of gay pop, for sure not. But I do want to be a piece of making it bigger than it already is. I want to bring more attention to it… I’m not the president [of gay pop], but I might be the CEO, or the CMO. I can be the CMO, the chief marketing officer, and use my marketing tactics whether people like it or not.”

Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, Oscar-Winning ‘Finding Neverland’ Composer, Dies at 71

Polish composer Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, who won a 2005 Oscar for the musical score of Finding Neverland, died on Tuesday (May 21). He was 71.

Kaczmarek’s death was announced by Poland’s Music Foundation, which had been informed of his passing by the composer’s wife. Kaczmarek had suffered from MSA, a rare degenerative neurological disorder.

He composed music for movies made in Europe and Hollywood, like 1995’s Total Eclipse with Leonardo DiCaprio and 2002’s Unfaithful starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane.

Global fame came when he won the Oscar for best original score with the biographical fantasy Finding Neverland, inspired by the life of author J.M. Barrie, starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet.

Born in Poland in 1953, Kaczmarek wanted to be a diplomat and studied law, but a brief association with the avant-garde theater of Jerzy Grotowski set him on the musical career.

In 1989, he settled in Los Angeles, but toward the end of his life lived in Krakow in southern Poland.

He is survived by his second wife, Aleksandra Twardowska-Kaczmarek, and five children.

Liverpool to Transform Into ‘Taylor Town’ Ahead of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Shows

So long, Liverpool. Ahead of Taylor Swift‘s upcoming Eras Tour shows, the English city is now known as “Taylor Town.”

The city is currently in the process of unveiling a temporary makeover to prepare for the pop star’s three performances slated for June 13-15 at Anfield Stadium, starting with the tailored — or should we say, Tay-lored — name change. Plus, local creatives are designing 11 individual art installations inspired by each of Swift’s studio albums to form a “Taylor Town Trail,” including a playable moss-covered grand piano representing Evermore, a “red room” encapsulating Red and a Fearless mural based on the singer’s lucky number, 13.

Banners spelling out “Taylor” have also already gone up across the front of St. George’s Hall in the center of town, as captured in photos from local Swifties.

“One of the biggest stars on the planet is coming to the birthplace of pop,” reads a notice on the Liverpool City Council website. “And to mark this musical moment for the ages, there are plans in place to give Swifties a proper scouse welcome.”

Trending on Billboard

The city is also planning a series of ticketed craft workshops — aka Liverpool Loves Taylor (Craft Version) — where fans can make origami pieces that will be added to one of the 11 main art installations. Participants will also be able to work on homemade Swif-tee shirts, collages and cupcakes inspired by the “Anti-Hero” singer.

The University of Liverpool is getting involved, too, by hosting a free “Tay Day” symposium for academics, students and fans to “unpack the cultural phenomenon that is Taylor Swift,” according to the city council’s notice. “The event will include critical karaoke sessions, where researchers perform their findings to some of Taylor’s biggest hits and a series of interactive talks on subjects including her song lyrics, her award-winning albums and her place in feminism and the LGBTQ+ community.”

Liverpool is just the latest Eras Tour locale to go all out ahead of Swift’s arrival. For instance, Glendale, Ariz., temporarily changed its name to “Swift City” in lieu of the 14-time Grammy winner’s kickoff show there in spring 2023, while Rio de Janeiro projected the image of a Taylor-themed T-shirt onto its iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in November.

Diddy’s Ex Misa Hylton Says 2016 Cassie Ventura Video ‘Has Triggered My Own Trauma’

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ex Misa Hylton has taken to Instagram to speak out following a devastating 2016 video resurfaced, in which the hip-hop star appears to be physically assaulting then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a hotel.

“I am heartbroken that Cassie must relive the horror of her abuse, and my heart goes out to her. I know exactly how she feels, and through my empathy, it has triggered my own trauma,” Hylton wrote on Instagram, alongside photos of Combs’ seven children. She shares 30-year-old Justin Combs with Diddy, and dated the “I’ll Be Missing You” rapper in the early 1990s.

“These young people were raised by women that want the best for them – we put God and education first and have always been united in our mutual effort to support their dreams. Two of the youngest do not have their mother here and it has been our duty to support them,” Hylton continued. “Their father needs help and I am praying that he truly does the personal work and receives it.”

See her post here.

In the video, obtained by CNN earlier this month and dated March 5, 2016, Combs appears to shove Ventura to the ground near an elevator bank, kick her several times while she lies on the ground and drag her down a hallway. The contents of the video mirror an assault allegation Ventura made in a now-settled lawsuit she filed against Diddy in November.

Shortly after, on May 19, Diddy took to social media to share a video of himself taking responsibility and apologizing for his actions in the disturbing clip. “It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that,” Diddy says in his Instagram video. “I was f—ed up. I mean, I hit rock bottom. But I make no excuses. My behavior on that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I’m disgusted. I was disgusted then when I did it, I’m disgusted now.”

He continued, “I went out and sought professional help. Had to go into therapy, into rehab. Had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to being a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry.”

“The gut-wrenching video has only further confirmed the disturbing and predatory behavior of Mr. Combs,” said Ventura’s attorney, Douglas Wigdor, in a statement sent to Billboard. “Words cannot express the courage and fortitude that Ms. Ventura has shown in coming forward to bring this to light.”

Following the video’s release, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office issued a statement that Combs won’t be prosecuted over his actions in the 2016 video. “We find the images extremely disturbing and difficult to watch,” the office of L.A. District Attorney George Gascón wrote in a statement on Instagram Friday (May 17). “If the conduct depicted occurred in 2016, unfortunately we would be unable to charge as the conduct would have occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted.”

The “Bling-Bang-Bang-Born” duo kicked off the tour in March and the nationwide trek is expected to draw approximately 70,000 fans total, including additional shows in June. The concert set for June 16 at Yoyogi 1st Gymnasium in Tokyo will be streamed around the world in its entirety on Beyond LIVE, a global concert streaming platform. The livestream will only be available to audiences outside of Japan.

Creepy Nuts, consisting of rapper R-shitei and DJ Matsunaga, have never streamed their shows globally before. The MASHLE season 2 opener topped the Billboard Japan Hot 100 for 13 consecutive weeks from the chart dated Jan. 31 to April 24 and recently logged its 15th week atop the tally on the chart dated March 15. Total streams for the rap banger sailed past 300 million at the second fastest pace in Japan chart history.

Two Songs Top 70 Million Weekly U.S. Streams for the First Time

For the first time, two songs have at least 70 million official U.S. streams in a single chart week.

Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen, earned 76.4 million in the May 10-16 tracking week, according to Luminate. The same frame, Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” tallies its second week of 70 million-plus streams, with 72 million, a 2% jump from 70.9 million in the May 3-9 frame.

As a result, “I Had Some Help” debuts at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Streaming Songs chart dated May 25, pushing “Not Like Us” down to No. 2.

That’s the first time two songs have had at least 70 million weekly official U.S. streams since Billboard incorporated streaming data into its charts, with the Streaming Songs tally beginning in 2013. The closest any week had previously come was on the Aug. 22, 2020, survey, when Cardi B’s “WAP,” featuring Megan Thee Stallion, reigned via 93 million streams, followed by Drake’s “Laugh Now Cry Later,” featuring Lil Durk, with 69.8 million.

Trending on Billboard

And that’s before one brings Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby,” the May 25 Streaming Songs chart’s No. 3 song, into the equation. It ranks with 66.3 million streams, up 14%. You can probably see where this is going: the May 25 rundown is the first time three songs have accrued 60 million streams or more in a single week.

“I Had Some Help” reigns in its first week, having been released May 10. It’s Post Malone’s fourth No. 1 on Streaming Songs and second in a row, following his rule as a featured artist on Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” earlier in May. His other No. 1s were “Rockstar,” featuring 21 Savage, in 2017 and “Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse),” billed as a co-lead with Swae Lee, in 2019.

Wallen, meanwhile, boasts his second No. 1, following a long rule for “Last Night” last year. As “Last Night” rose to No. 1 rather than debuting there, “I Had Some Help” becomes his first entry to premiere atop Streaming Songs.

Lamar’s “Not Like Us” achieves an additional distinction of being the first song in the chart’s history to actually rise in streams after first accruing 70 million since chart calculations began including only official streaming content in September 2020. That said, Lamar’s first week (May 3-9) was with a partial week of data, as “Not Like Us” was released May 4.

Going back to that week in September 2020, the new May 25, 2024, chart contains three of the seven biggest streaming weeks since. “I Had Some Help” is the biggest, while “Not Like Us” achieves the fourth largest in its latest frame, while “Million Dollar Baby” boasts the seventh largest.

Biggest Streaming Weeks Since Sept. 19, 2020:

  • “I Had Some Help,’ Post Malone feat. Morgan Wallen, 76.4 million (May 25, 2024)
  • “Fortnight,” Taylor Swift feat. Post Malone, 76.2 million (May 4, 2024)
  • “Drivers License,” Olivia Rodrigo, 76.1 million (Jan. 23, 2021)
  • “Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar, 72 million (May 25, 2024)
  • “Not Like Us,” Kendrick Lamar, 70.9 million (May 18, 2024)
  • “Way 2 Sexy,” Drake feat. Future & Young Thug, 67.3 million (Sept. 18, 2021)
  • “Million Dollar Baby,” Tommy Richman, 66.3 million (May 25, 2024)
  • “Good 4 U,” Olivia Rodrigo, 62.7 million (June 5, 2021)
  • “Flowers,” Miley Cyrus, 59.8 million (Feb. 4, 2023)
  • “Anti-Hero,” Taylor Swift, 59.7 million (Nov. 5, 2022)

Of the above, all were the No. 1 songs of the week on the Streaming Songs chart, aside from “Not Like Us” and “Million Dollar Baby” via the May 25 chart.

Concurrently, as previously reported, “I Had Some Help” reigns on the multimetric Billboard Hot 100, followed by “Not Like Us” and “Million Dollar Baby” at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively.
