Dave Grohl surprised fans at a Foo Fighters concert in Denver by performing an unexpected cover of Tenacious D’s “Tribute.”
During the acoustic section of the set at Empower Field on Aug. 3, Grohl took the mic and paid homage to his longtime friends and collaborators Jack Black and Kyle Gass.
“I only played the drums on that song,” Grohl quipped, recalling his contribution to the original track. You can check out the moment at the 1:31 mark below.

But as fans know, the beloved rocker’s involvement with Tenacious D goes far beyond percussion.

Grohl has played drums on all of Tenacious D’s albums and famously portrayed Satan in both the “Tribute” music video and the 2006 film Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, his devilish antics having become a beloved part of the band’s mythology.
The Foo Fighters‘ “Tribute” performance comes not long after Tenacious D found themselves in hot water over a controversial comment made during a show in Sydney on July 14.
When Jack Black asked Kyle Gass for his birthday wish, Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” referencing the failed assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The remark drew major backlash, with an Australian senator calling for the band’s deportation and the Australian Prime Minister telling the band they needed to “grow up”.
In response, Tenacious D cancelled the rest of their tour and announced, “All future creative plans are on hold.”
Jack Black released a statement distancing himself from the controversial comments, saying in a statement that he was “blindsided” by his bandmate.
“I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” Black wrote on Instagram before announcing the cancellation of the tour.
Kyle Gass also faced professional repercussions, reportedly being dropped by his agent.
In the midst of this controversy, Grohl’s Denver performance seemed to offer a light-hearted show of support for his friends.
“Tribute,” released in 2002, became Tenacious D’s breakthrough hit, reaching No. 4 on the U.K. Singles Chart and peaking at No. 84 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart.
The “Tribute” music video, featuring Grohl as the devil, has amassed over 124 million views on YouTube since its release.

The Detroit rap icon has once again proven his staying power with this 12th studio album, which marks his 11th No. 1 in the U.K.
Slim is still king of the hill, holding off a strong push from Taylor Swift, whose album The Tortured Poets Department leaps two spots to No. 2 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.

Meanwhile, Charli XCX is riding the wave of her BRAT summer. Her album BRAT, a 2024 Mercury Prize nominee, climbs three spots to land at No. 3. With a newly-released remix of “Guess” featuring Billie Eilish, Charli is making sure her summer anthem is on everyone’s playlist.
Chappell Roan is also having a moment with her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. Rising three spots to No. 4, Chappell’s poised to make even bigger moves.
Billie Eilish, not one to be left in the dust, sees her album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT bounce back into the Top 5 at No. 5.
Meanwhile, Blur have delivered a nostalgic punch with Live at Wembley Stadium. Recorded over two nights in July 2023, this live album debuts at No. 6, becoming the week’s highest new entry and topping the Official Vinyl Albums Chart. It also marks Blur’s 14th Top 10 album. Live at Wembley Stadium was the leader at the midweek stage.
Sam Tompkins is making waves with his album hi, my name is insecure.—a fresh entry at No. 8 that also conquers the Official Record Store Chart and is the best-selling album of the week in independent U.K. record shops.
Over in the world of heavy metal, Swedish band Ghost hits a high note with their latest release, Rite Here Rite Now. Entering at No. 10, the album is the soundtrack to their concert film and adds another Top 10 achievement to their growing list of successes.
And there’s a blast from the past as The Police storm back into the Top 40 with their classic, final studio album Synchronicity. Thanks to a super deluxe reissue, it reclaims its spot at No. 30, a 40 years after its original release.
Benson Boone is also enjoying a resurgence, with his debut Fireworks & Rollerblades jumping 13 places to No. 31 after hitting the shelves on vinyl.
Rounding out this week’s chart action is Céline Dion, whose My Love – The Essential Collection vaults an impressive 32 spots to No. 36. Her performance of Édith Piaf’s “Hymne A L’Amour” at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris marked her first in four years due to her battle with Stiff-Person Syndrome.
Adele didn’t let her live show get in the way of watching the 2024 Summer Olympics.
During her concert in Munich on Saturday (Aug. 3), the 36-year-old British songstress paused her performance to watch the women’s 100-meter final in Paris, as seen in a fan-captured clip posted on the X (formerly Twitter) account for NBC Olympics.
The “Easy on Me” singer then broadcast the 11-second race on the big screen for all 75,000-something fans at the custom-built Adele Arena, where her 10-night residency launched on Friday.
The Munich crowd fell to a hush as Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia took home the gold medal, finishing the race in 10.72 seconds. U.S. stars Sha’carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson won silver and bronze, respectively.
After Alfred’s victory, which marked Saint Lucia’s first Olympic gold medal in history, Adele asked the audience to give the runner a hand for the accomplishment.

“Let’s give her a round of applause!” the 16-time Grammy winner said. “Let’s get on with the show. Fantastic, St. Lucia!”
Adele also had the Olympics on her mind during the opening night of the mini-residency on Friday.
“… While I was watching world-class athletes, I’d be like, ‘Oh that landing was a bit dodgy, wasn’t it? Oh her legs weren’t really straight,’ Meanwhile, if I tried anything that they do, I’d be dead,” she said in a fan-captured video from the show. “I’d absolutely die if I tried to even do a little, any kind of movement at all.”
During the concert, Adele also gave props to U.S. gymnast Simone Biles for winning multiple gold medals, calling her “absolutely brilliant.”

Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department returns to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (dated Aug. 10), collecting a 13th nonconsecutive week atop the list. The album spent its first 12 weeks on the chart at No. 1, fell to No. 4 for two weeks, and now rebounds to No. 1 for a 13th frame. (Thirteen is also famously Swift’s lucky number.)

Tortured Poets earned 71,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Aug. 1 (down 3%), according to Luminate. That marks the smallest weekly sum for a No. 1 album since March 16-dated chart, when Morgan Wallen’s One Thing at a Time was tops with 68,000 units.
The last album to spend at least 13 weeks at No. 1 was One Thing at a Time, which logged 19 total nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 between March 2023 and this March. The last album by a woman to spend at least 13 total weeks at No. 1 was Adele’s 21, which earned 24 nonconsecutive weeks on top in 2011-12.

With Poets — Swift’s longest-leading album — she adds her 82nd career week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, extending her record among soloists. (Elvis Presley has the second-most among soloists, with 67.) The total encompasses her 14 No. 1 albums. (She’s tied with Jay-Z for the most No. 1s among soloists.)
Also on the latest Billboard 200, the sleepy top 10, where no albums debut in the region, sees Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess hit a new peak, as it climbs 8-4, surpassing its previous high of No. 5.
The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units, compiled by Luminate. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. The new Aug. 10, 2024-dated chart will be posted in full on Billboard‘s website on Aug. 6. Of The Tortured Poets Department’s 71,000 units earned in the week ending Aug. 1, SEA units comprise 59,000 (down 8%, equaling 77.73 million on-demand official streams of the deluxe album’s 31 songs), album sales comprise 12,000 (up 34%, aided by a stock replenishment of a deluxe CD edition of the album in Swift’s webstore) and TEA units comprise a negligible sum (down 23%).
Wallen’s One Thing at a Time rises 6-2 with 64,000 equivalent album units earned (down 1%, also returning to No. 1 on Top Streaming Albums for the first time since March) and Zach Bryan’s The Great American Bar Scene climbs 5-3 with 61,000 (down 14%).
Chappell Roan’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess reaches a new peak, jumping 8-4 with 53,000 equivalent album units (though down 1%). The set previously topped out at No. 5 on the July 13-dated list. Billie Eilish’s Hit Me Hard and Soft ascends 9-5 with nearly 53,000 units (down 2%) and Stray Kids’ ATE falls 1-6 in its second week with 52,000 units (down 78%; it’s also No. 1 on Top Album Sales for a second week).
Eminem’s chart-topping The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) dips 3-7 with 49,000 equivalent album units earned (down 37%), Twisters: The Album falls 7-8 with 44,000 units (down 23%), Charli XCX’s Brat returns to the top 10, rising 14-9 with 40,000 units (up 10%), and Noah Kahan’s Stick Season is steady at No. 10 with 39,000 units (down 10%).

Jelly Roll checked off an item on his bucket list after participating in this year’s WWE SummerSlam.
On Saturday (Aug. 3), the 39-year-old country star stepped into the wrestling ring at Cleveland Browns Stadium to deliver some major punishment during a heated match that found Miz and R-Truth battling Austin Theory and Grayson Waller.
Dressed in all black, Jelly teamed up with Miz and R-Truth and came armed with a folding chair that he furiously slammed onto his foes. The “Need a Favor” singer-rapper capped off the appearance by chokeslamming Theory, sending the stadium crowd into thunderous applause.

Elsewhere during SummerSlam, Jelly Roll stepped into the ring with his band to perform the song “Liar,” which served as the official theme of the event.
WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque teased in mid-July that Jelly might perform at the prestigious annual wrestling spectacle.
“Excited to have my friend Jelly Roll back with two official #SummerSlam theme songs: ‘Dead End Road’ off Twisters: The Album, and ‘Liar’ off his album coming this fall,” Levesque wrote on social media.
This isn’t the chart-topping country musician’s first interaction with WWE. The Nashville native has made several surprise appearances at WWE events in his hometown, most memorably in November 2023, during which he got involved in a match between wrestlers Randy Orton and Dominik Mysterio by pushing Mysterio and JD McDonagh after they confronted him outside the ring.
“I just felt like I was backing my boy,” Jelly said at the time.
It’s the latest addition to Jelly Roll’s ever-growing list of achievements, with the country superstar recently collaborating with Eminem on “Somebody Save Me,” which served as the closer on the rapper’s latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce).

Taylor Swift is celebrating Team USA’s top athletes at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
During NBC’s primetime coverage of the Olympics on Saturday (Aug. 3), the 34-year-old pop superstar narrated a promotional video praising three medal-winning stars at this year’s games: gymnast Simone Biles, swimmer Katie Ledecky and sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson.
“Never be afraid to show them who you are, especially when the whole world is watching,” Swift says as her 2015 hit “Style” plays in the background. “Because there is no one way to be the best. No one way to inspire everyone else who will someday follow.”
The inspiring clip opens with written quote from fashion icon Coco Chanel, followed by a shot of Biles at the vault, then moving to Richardson confidently walking on a field, and Ledecky fiercely swimming in a pool.

“You do what you love. You love what you do,” Swift says as more competition footage is shown. “You believe in your style, whatever it is.”
The video concludes with Swift name-checking the three women as shots of the athletes gleefully winning their medals flash across the screen.
“Katie, Sha’Carri and Simone,” the pop star says. “Three American stars. Three different visions of greatness. Tonight, in Paris.”
Last weekend, Swift’s live version of “…Ready for It?” from The Eras Tour was the soundtrack to a NBC commercial promoting the network’s coverage of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
“So ready to scream at my tv cheering for these athletes,” Swift reacted in an Instagram Story, adding a gold medal emoji to her comment while sharing a reel of the “…Ready for It?” promo.
The spot featured U.S. Olympic stars including Noah Lyles, LeBron James, Carissa Moore, Jagger Eaton and more, with Biles appearing at the end of the ad.
