Lil Wayne kicked off the MTV VMAs at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on Tuesday (Sept. 12) with an explosive medley to set the energy right.
The rapper welcomed fans to the awards show with a hood on his head before launching into “Uproar,” off Tha Carter V, followed by the title track off his 2023 album Kat Food, complete with pyrotechnics and high energy.

The performance comes just months after his Billboard cover story to celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, where he defended his musical abilities against the rising trend of artificial intelligence. “They were trying to tell me that A.I. could make a voice that sounds just like me,” he said. “But it’s not me, because I’m amazing. Among this year’s other performers are Anitta, Cardi B, Demi Lovato, Diddy, Doja Cat, Fall Out Boy, Karol G, Kelsea Ballerini, Maneskin, Megan Thee Stallion, Metro Boomin (featuring Future, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie, Swae Lee and NAV), Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo, Peso Pluma, Shakira, Stray Kids and TOMORROW X TOGETHER.
