MTV Movie & TV Awards

Put those “Golden Popcorn” statues back in storage. The MTV Movie & TV Awards have been put “on pause” this year, and “will return with a reimagined format in 2025,” according to a spokesperson.
The show, originally dubbed the MTV Movie Awards, was a yearly fixture from 1992 to 2019, but has lost some momentum in recent years. The show wasn’t held in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, MTV aired MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time, a clip show hosted by Vanessa Hudgens, which featured highlights from past ceremonies.

The show took place in 2021 and 2022, but the 2023 show was stymied by the Writers Guild of America strike. Drew Barrymore was set to host that year’s show. Barrymore has achieved success in both movies and TV and would have been an ideal host, but when the WGA went on strike on May 2, 2023 – just five days before the show was set to take place at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. – Barrymore and most of the planned guests dropped out. As a result, the traditional ceremony didn’t take place. It was replaced by a pre-recorded virtual ceremony with no host.

Trending on Billboard

The MTV Movie & TV Awards were once a hot pop-culture show. Hosts in the show’s prime included such A-list stars as Eddie Murphy, Will Smith, Ben Stiller, Mike Myers, Jimmy Fallon and Sarah Jessica Parker, the latter at the height of her Sex and the City fame. But the show has lost some allure in recent years.

The two post-pandemic shows that made it to air were co-hosted by Leslie Jones and Nikki Glaser, followed by Hudgens and Tayshia Adams. No shade to these performers, but they’re not Eddie Murphy or Will Smith.

This isn’t the first time MTV has pulled the plug on a show. The 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards were scheduled to take place on Nov. 5, 2023 at the Paris Nord Villepinte in Paris. The ceremony was cancelled on Oct. 19 due to the Israel–Hamas war, becoming the first EMAs to be cancelled in its 30-year history. Despite that setback, voting remained open until Oct. 31. The winning artists were revealed on Nov. 5.

Let’s be honest: Few in the music industry tuned into the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards to see who won this year’s Golden Popcorn Awards. The big question was: Would the producers be able to put on fun and entertaining show with so much working against them – losing their popular host and their red-carpet pre-show and ultimately not even going live – all in reaction to a strike by members of the Writers Guild of America.

The answer: Depending on your level of interest in old clips from past shows, the show was surprisingly watchable. As it turns out, the people who most deserve a Golden Popcorn this year may be MTV’s Bruce Gillmer, Wendy Plaut and Vanessa Whitewolf, who executive produced the show along with Den of Thieves’ Jesse Ignjatovic and Barb Bialkowskijustfor getting a show on the air in difficult circumstances.

The show, now in its 31st year, had seemed to headed for a big night when it booked Drew Barrymore as host and corralled the red-hot Jennifer Coolidge to receive its Comedic Genius Award. They even came up with a clever tag line for the show: “Party more! Fan more! BARRYMORE!” But when members of the WGA went on strike on May 2, the show was thrown into chaos.

The first setback came on Thursday when Barrymore pulled out as host in solidarity with the striking writers. Also on Thursday, MTV called off the red carpet for the event. WGA said on Friday that it was planning to picket the show, which made holding a live show increasingly problematic.

So, the production team behind the2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards had just a few days to scramble and get a show on the air that would be worth watching. The two-hour show aired Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on MTV with simulcasts on BET, BET Her, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, VH1.

Producers of live television live for moments that test their mettle, though it’s probably safe to say that they would have preferred a drama-free roll-out of the show they originally envisioned, with their popular host and their red-hot Comedic Genius recipient both live at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif.

Here are six memorable moments from the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Drew Barrymore and Jennifer Coolidge were both in the show – on video.

Barrymore had pre-taped a few comedy bits, which were front-loaded into the show. And she was the winner of best host for The Drew Barrymore Show (beating Emmy rival Kelly Clarkson for The Kelly Clarkson Show, among others). Coolidge accepted her Comedic Genius Award by video and also a second, competitive award – most frightened performance for The White Lotus. So at least they were in the show.

Music clips worth seeing again.

The show did not have a live musical performance, which was the plan as recently as a few days ago, but it was a treat to see the music clips from past shows, especially Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella” (featuring Jay-Z), both from the 2007 show. Other clips that were well worth seeing again included Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, Mya and Pink’s “Lady Marmalade” (2001), TLC’s “Waterfalls” (2005), Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” (featuring Snoop Dogg, 2010), Selena Gomez’s “Come and Get It” (2013) and Lizzo’s “Juice” (2019). Even a minor, mostly-forgotten song, such as Pink’s “Feel Good Time” (2003), from Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, was good to see again. This was blatant filler, but how lucky MTV is to have such prime material to tap when needed.

Tom Cruise, professional as ever.

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest movie stars of the past four decades, but he genuinely seems to care, even after all this time, even about awards that, let’s face it, are not the Oscars or even the Golden Globes. Cruise not only submitted a video for his win for best performance in a movie for Top Gun: Maverick, but it was an elaborate clip of him giving his acceptance speech while flying a plane. And his words were heartfelt: “I make these films for you…Thank you again for letting me entertain you. It’s an absolute privilege.”

Three acceptance speeches by Pedro Pascal.

The show was lucky that the buzzy Pedro Pascal gave three videotaped acceptance speeches, all for The Last of Us – best hero, best duo (with Bella Ramsey) and best show. They were sprinkled throughout the program.

Well-produced clip packages.

The program had a seemingly endless supply of clip packages to fill time (and at that, the show was about six minutes short of filling its two-hour time-slot). There was a package devoted to “jaw-dropping moments,” including at least two that lived up to that breathless billing – a bare-bottomed Sacha Baron Cohen landing on Eminem; and Jim Carrey, deep in character, saying “There’s some fine-looking pu**y in this room.” MTV didn’t bleep it, but we have to.

There were also packages devoted to fashion from 20 years ago (including Beyoncé, just beginning her solo career, saying she wanted to wear something sexy and flirty), previous breakthrough performance presentations, and previous Comedic Genius presentations.

(Hey MTV, a suggestion: The name “Comedic Genius” couldn’t be stiffer or more pretentious, especially for your target audience. How about “Comedy Icon”?)

Support for the striking writers, but it wasn’t a main focus of the show.

The show elected not to have someone say “Here’s why the show is going to look a little different tonight.” The producers probably figured “why call attention to it? Let’s hope we hook them as viewers before they catch on.” But some winners did salute their writers. Accepting her Comedic Genius award, Coolidge said “As a proud member of SAG [Screen Actors Guild], I stand here before you tonight side-by-side with my sisters and brothers from the WGA that are fighting right now, fighting for the rights of artists everywhere. And I think of the words of Shakespeare where he once said ‘The play is the thing.’ Well, I don’t want to put words in his mouth or anything, but I think what he really meant was ‘it’s everything.’” (I’m sure The Bard would appreciate that note.)

Accepting best show for The Last of Us, Pascal said they were “standing in solidarity with the WGA that is fighting for fair wages. Accepting best breakthrough performance, Joseph Quinn of Stranger Things said ‘writers deserve respect.” And accepting for best host, Barrymore gave a name-check to three writers from her daytime talk show. “I want to thank our amazing team of writers. This is definitely for them and every single person who makes this show.”

Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were both winners in music-related categories at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, where the HBO series The Last of Us, starring Pedro Pascal, took home the most awards of the night.

Swift’s “Carolina,” from the Where the Crawdads Sing soundtrack, was awarded best song. In the category, “Carolina” was up against movie soundtrack songs from Demi Lovato, Doja Cat, Lady Gaga, OneRepublic and Rihanna.

Gomez’s My Mind & Me was honored as best music documentary, where she’d competed with the films Halftime; Love, Lizzo; Sheryl and The Day the Music Died: The Story of Don McLean’s American Pie.

The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards honored stars in movies and television, across scripted and unscripted, with a pre-taped ceremony that aired on Sunday (May 7). Drew Barrymore was set to host, but opted not to out of solidarity with the Writer’s Guild of America strike.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards will still air on Sunday, but the show will not air live as planned from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. Instead, it will be a pre-taped show filled with pre-taped acceptance speeches and comedy bits.
Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount Global, and an executive producer of the show, released a statement Friday (May 5), saying: “As we carefully navigate how best to deliver the fan-first awards show we envisioned that our team has worked so hard to create, we’re pivoting away from a live event that still enables us to produce a memorable night full of exclusive sneak peaks, irreverent categories our audience has come to expect, and countless moments that will both surprise and delight as we honor the best of film and TV over the past year.”

The show, now in its 31st year, had seemed to be headed for a big night when it booked Drew Barrymore as host and corralled Jennifer Coolidge to receive its Comedic Genius Award. But when members of the Writers Guild of America went on strike on Tuesday, after negotiations with studios and streamers had collapsed the previous night, the show was thrown into chaos.

The first setback came on Thursday, when Barrymore pulled out as host in solidarity with the striking writers, which include the writing staff of her hit daytime talk show. “I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” Barrymore said in a statement.

While losing a big-name host just three days before a live show is a tough break, there were no hard feelings on MTV’s part. “Drew, without question, she’s been incredible,” Gillmer told Variety. “…She is not surprisingly, standing in solidarity with the writers, which we have full respect for. She has our full support.”

Also on Thursday, MTV called off the red carpet for the event, so celebrities would not have to face questions about the strike. But the plan at that time was still to have a live show. The WGA said on Friday that it was planning to picket the show, which made holding a live show increasingly problematic.

The MTV Movie Awards, the forerunner of the MTV Movie & TV Awards, were once pre-taped, so this is not unprecedented.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards will still air Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on MTV, with simulcasts on BET, BET Her, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land, VH1.

Executive producers for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, who are becoming battle-tested in the challenges of live television, are MTV’s Gillmer, Wendy Plaut and Vanessa Whitewolf, along with Den of Thieves’ Jesse Ignjatovic and Barb Bialkowski. Jackie Barba and Alicia Portugal are executives in charge of production and Lisa Lauricella serves as the music talent executive.

Is it possible for producers to put on a fun, entertaining show with so much working against them? You’ll just have to tune in Sunday night and find out.

Drew Barrymore has bowed out as host of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, set for Sunday May 6, in a show of solidarity with striking members of the Writers Guild of America. Barrymore has already agreed to host the 2024 edition of the show.
Variety was first to report the news.

“I have listened to the writers, and in order to truly respect them, I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” Barrymore said in a statement. “Everything we celebrate and honor about movies and television is born out of their creation. And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait but I’ll be watching from home and hope you will join me. I thank MTV, who has truly been some of the best partners I have ever worked with. And I can’t wait to be a part of this next year, when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive.”

Barrymore is one of the best and buzziest hosts the MTV Movie & TV Awards has booked in recent years. Her daytime talk show, which debuted on Sept. 14, 2020, received seven Daytime Emmy nominations last week, second only to The Kelly Clarkson Show among daytime talk shows. The nods included outstanding daytime talk series and outstanding daytime talk series host.

MTV has heavily promoted Barrymore as host, with frequent on-air promotional spots. The show, set to unfold in front of a live audience at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., will go on, but without a host for the first time in its 31-year history.

While losing a big-name host just two days before a live show is a tough break, there are no hard feelings on MTV’s part. “Drew, without question, she’s been incredible. It’s hard to imagine that we’ve ever had a better experience with a host,” Bruce Gillmer, president of music, music talent, programming and events at Paramount Global, and an executive producer of the MTV Movie & TV Awards, told Variety. “…She is not surprisingly, standing in solidarity with the writers, which we have full respect for. She has our full support.”

Though Barrymore won’t be at the live event, she may still play a role in the show. She had already participated in several pre-taped short films — and those pieces are still expected to air. One may open the show.

While the strike has thrown the show into chaos, some elements of the show will not be affected, including the show’s exclusive “sneak peaks” of films targeted at the young demo that watches this show. Some stars had already pre-taped acceptance speeches for awards. The ranks of presenters includes athletes and celebrity chefs and other talent not as directly affected by the strike as actors. The show is also expected to include a live performance.

But other presenters may or may not appear. And the presentation of the Comedic Genius Award to Jennifer Coolidge is up in the air. Also, there will no longer be a red carpet or talent interviews before the show.

Executive producers for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards are MTV’s Gillmer, Wendy Plaut and Vanessa Whitewolf, along with Den of Thieves’ Jesse Ignjatovic and Barb Bialkowski. Jackie Barba and Alicia Portugal are executives in charge of production and Lisa Lauricella serves as the music talent executive.

This is the 31st edition of this show and the sixth to jointly honor movies and TV.

This isn’t the first time a strike has upended plans for an awards show. The 32nd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 7, 1980, was held in the midst of a strike by members of the Screen Actors Guild. Steve Allen and Dick Clark hosted the show, which was held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium and broadcast on NBC.

In a show of support for their union, 51 of the 52 nominated performers boycotted the event. Actor Powers Boothe was the only nominated actor to attend. He won outstanding lead actor in a limited series or a special for his portrayal of Jim Jones on CBS’ Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones. Acknowledging his decision to show up at the star-less show, he remarked in his acceptance speech, “This is either the most courageous moment of my career or the stupidest.”

Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” from Stranger Things, the Oscar-winning “Naatu Naatu” from RRR and “Trouble” from Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis are among the 16 nominees competing for best musical moment at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. There are also nominees from such buzzy shows as M3GAN, Wednesday and Daisy Jones & the Six.
Voting in the social category opens via MTV’s Instagram Stories on Monday (May 1) and closes on May 5. The winner will be revealed live in the Drew Barrymore-hosted show on May 7.

The nominees for best musical moment are:

Daisy Jones & The Six: “Look at Us Now (Honeycomb)”

Don’t Worry Darling: Jack’s Tap Dance

        Elvis: “Trouble”

Ginny & Georgia: “I Will Survive” (Bachelorette Party)

        M3GAN: “Titanium”

        Matilda the Musical: “Revolting Children”

        Purple Hearts: “Come Back Home”

        RRR: “Naatu Naatu”

        She-Hulk: Attorney at Law: “Body”

        SNL: “Big Boys”

Stranger Things: “Running Up That Hill”

The Last of Us: “Long Long Time” (Bill & Frank Play Piano)

The School for Good and Evil: “You Should See Me in a Crown”

The Summer I Turned Pretty: “This Love (Taylor’s Version)”

        Wednesday: “Goo Goo Muck”

        Young Royals: “Simon’s Song”

MTV also announced the first round of presenters, which includes Busta Rhymes, Halle Bailey (The Little Mermaid), Gal Gadot (Heart of Stone), Sarah Michelle Gellar (Wolf Pack), recent Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis and Tiffany Hadish (both from Haunted Mansion) and no fewer than four stars from the buzzy Amazon Prime musical drama Daisy Jones & The Six.

The show will air live from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif. on May 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, simulcasting across BET, BETHer, Comedy Central, CMT, Logo, MTV2, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, Pop, TV Land and VH1.

As previously announced, Jennifer Coolidge will receive the Comedic Genius Award.

Executive producers for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards are MTV’s Bruce Gillmer, Wendy Plaut and Vanessa Whitewolf, along with Den of Thieves’ Jesse Ignjatovic and Barb Bialkowski. Jackie Barba and Alicia Portugal are executives in charge of production. Lisa Lauricella and Mike Ostolaza serve as the music talent executives.

Check out the announcement video below.

Actress Jennifer Coolidge is slated to receive the Comedic Genius Award at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. Drew Barrymore is set to host the show, which airs live on Sunday, May 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
Coolidge will become the sixth recipient of the award, following Will Ferrell (2013), Kevin Hart (2015), Melissa McCarthy (2016), Sacha Baron Cohen (2021) and Jack Black (2022). The award “honors actors who have made incomparable contributions to the world of comedy, providing a major influence through their work and transforming the genre at large,” according to MTV.

Coolidge is nominated in two competitive categories at this year’s show. She is up for best comedic performance for the rom-com Shotgun Wedding, in which she starred opposite Jennifer Lopez, and most frightened performance her portrayal of the wealthy, unstable, and oblivious Tanya McQuoid in HBO’s The White Lotus. The latter performance has brought her several awards, including her first Primetime Emmy last year for outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie.

Coolidge, 61, has been a Hollywood mainstay ever since playing Stifler’s mom in the 1999 comedy classic American Pie. She is well-known for her role as the love-starved beautician Paulette in the Legally Blonde franchise opposite Reese Witherspoon, and for her frequent collaborations with director Christopher Guest in Best In Show (2000), A Mighty Wind (2003) and For Your Consideration (2006).

The actress and comedienne recently starred in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series The Watcher opposite Naomi Watts, and in Netflix’s family adventure We Have a Ghost opposite David Harbour. She has also made scene-stealing appearances in A Cinderella Story opposite Hilary Duff, and Promising Young Woman opposite Carey Mulligan.

Bet you didn’t know: She is a sixth cousin twice removed of Calvin (“Silent Cal”) Coolidge, who served as U.S. President from 1923-29.

Executive producers of the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards include MTV’s Bruce Gillmer, Wendy Plaut and Vanessa Whitewolf along with Den of Thieves’ Jesse Ignjatovic and Barb Bialkowski. Jackie Barba and Alicia Portugal are executives in charge of production; Lisa Lauricella and Mike Ostolaza serve as music talent executives.

Selena Gomez, Harry Styles, Bad Bunny, Austin Butler and Doja Cat are among the nominees for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards. The show, hosted by Drew Barrymore, will air live May 7 from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., starting at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
Gomez is up for best performance in a show for her role in Only Murders in the Building and best kiss for her smooch with Cara Delevingne in that show. In addition, Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me is nominated for best music documentary.

The other nominees in the latter category are Love, Lizzo, The Day the Music Died: The Story of Don McLean’s American Pie, Halftime (about Jennifer Lopez) and Sheryl (about Sheryl Crow).

Styles is nominated for best villain for his role in Don’t Worry Darling and best kiss for his smooch with David Dawson in My Policeman.

Bad Bunny is nominated for two awards for Bullet Train: breakthrough performance and best fight, for a confrontation with Brad Pitt.

A few of the nominees also received Oscar or Emmy nominations. Austin Butler, an Oscar nominee for his breakthrough role in Elvis, is nominated here for best performance in a movie, but his four rivals were not Oscar-nominated. They are Florence Pugh in Don’t Worry Darling, Keke Palmer in Nope, Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick and Michael B. Jordan in Creed III. (The latter film was released in 2023, so Jordan may land an Oscar nod next year.)

It’s a similar story in the nominations for best song. Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick and Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, both of which were Oscar-nominated, are nominated here too, but the other four nominees here were not Oscar-nominated, for a variety of reasons. OneRepublic’s “I Ain’t Worried” (Top Gun: Maverick) and Taylor Swift’s “Carolina” (Where the Crawdads Sing) simply didn’t receive enough support. Doja Cat’s “Vegas” (Elvis) was ruled ineligible because it borrowed so heavily from the 1950s classic “Hound Dog.” Demi Lovato’s “Still Alive” is featured in a 2023 film, Scream VI.

The event, honoring work in both movies and television, across scripted and unscripted, will air on MTV internationally in more than 170 countries.

Top nominees for scripted programming are Top Gun: Maverick, Stranger Things and The Last of Us, with six nods each, followed by The White Lotus and Wednesday, with four nods each.

Top nominees for unscripted programming are Jersey Shore Family Vacation, RuPaul’s Drag Race, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules, with two nods each.

There are two new categories – best reality on-screen team and best kick-ass cast.

Beginning Wednesday (April 5), fans can vote for their favorites across 26 gender-neutral categories by visiting vote.mtv.com through April 17 at 6 p.m. ET.

Executive producers for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards are MTV’s Bruce Gillmer, Wendy Plaut and Vanessa Whitewolf, along with Den of Thieves’ Jesse Ignjatovic and Barb Bialkowski. Jackie Barba and Alicia Portugal are executives in charge of production and Lisa Lauricella and Mike Ostolaza serve as the music talent executives.

Drew Barrymore is set to host the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards live from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., on Sunday, May 7, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The evening will honor achievements in both movies and television, across scripted and unscripted.
Barrymore’s eponymous daytime talk show debuted Sept. 14, 2020. In January, the show was renewed for a fourth season.

Barrymore has won three Golden Popcorns, as the award at this show is known. She and Adam Sandler won best kiss for The Wedding Singer (1998) and best on-screen team for 50 First Dates (2004). She, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu won that same award, best on-screen team, for Charlie’s Angels (2001).

Barrymore was nominated for best talk/topical show at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards: UNSCRIPTED. The Drew Barrymore Show was one of two daytime talk shows to be nominated in the category (along with The Kelly Clarkson Show). Both afternoon talk shows lost to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

In 2020, Barrymore and Sandler were also honored as dynamic duo at the MTV Awards: Greatest of All Time.

This is the 31st edition of this show and the sixth to jointly honor movies and TV. Two years ago, MTV broke the show in two and presented awards for film and scripted television on one night and awards for reality television the following night. Last year, the two shows, though still distinct, aired on the same night. This year, the two shows will be rejoined.

Vanessa Hudgens and Tayshia Adams were hosts of last year’s show, with Hudgens hosting the first half for film and scripted television series, and Adams hosting the second half for awards in reality television.

Executive producers for the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards are MTV’s Bruce Gillmer, Wendy Plaut and Vanessa Whitewolf, along with Den of Thieves’ Jesse Ignjatovic and Barb Bialkowski. Jackie Barba and Alicia Portugal are executives in charge of production and Lisa Lauricella serves as the music talent executive.

Further news, including nominations and presenters, will be announced in the coming weeks.

Last year, special awards went to Jennifer Lopez (Generation Award), Jack Black (Comedic Genius Award) and Bethenny Frankel (MTV Reality Royalty Award).
