mother's day

This Mother’s Day is a special one for Halle Bailey: It’s her first as a mom following the arrival of her baby Halo a few months ago. And to celebrate, the vocalist shared a raw video from her son’s birth via Instagram on Sunday (May 12), along with clips from her first few weeks of motherhood.
In the reel, Bailey holds her newborn while still laying in her hospital bed, presumably just moments after welcoming her son. Another shot shows her boyfriend and Halo’s father, rapper DDG, cradling the tiny baby boy.

As the video goes on, Halo gets bigger and bigger through various shots of the Little Mermaid star cuddling her son. In one clip, the baby grabs at her face with his little hands, and in another, she holds him next to a drum set in a recording studio.

Trending on Billboard

“my first mother’s day,” she captioned the post. “the greatest love i’ve ever known.”

Bailey first announced she’d become a parent on Jan. 6. “Even though we’re a few days into the new year, the greatest thing that 2023 could have done for me, was bring me my son,” she wrote on social media at the time. “Welcome to the world my halo. The world is desperate to know you.”

Last month, the “Angel” singer opened up about her experience with postpartum depression, revealing in a Snapchat video, “I have severe, severe postpartum [depression], and I don’t know if any new moms can relate, but it’s to the point where it’s really bad, and it’s hard for me to be separated from my baby for more than 30 minutes at a time before I start to kind of freak out.”

“When I look at him, I cry because of how special he is,” she added. “The only thing that’s been hard for me is feeling normal in my own body. I feel like a completely different person. When I look in the mirror, I just feel like I’m in a whole new body. Like, I don’t know who I am.”

Though he’s only a few months old, Halo is already a music video star. In the April-released visual for “In Your Hands,” Bailey holds her son while belting the new track.

Travis Barker is celebrating Kourtney Kardashian on their first Mother’s Day since welcoming their baby son, Rocky Thirteen, together in November. “Happy Mother’s Day to my best friend and partner. Our children are so lucky to have you. Thank you for filling our home with love, laughter, and joy. I love you forever and ever […]

Leave it to Rihanna to be the most stylist mom on Mother’s Day. The “Needed Me” superstar stepped out for a date with partner A$AP Rocky on Sunday night (May 12), as they were photographed getting out of a taxi in New York City. Rihanna paired her freshly blonde locks with a sleek, red Comme […]

Madonna is sharing a reminder that Mother’s Day can be hard for some people. While honoring her late mom and namesake on Sunday (May 12), the pop star opened up in an emotional Instagram post about how she wasn’t aware of the extent of her mom’s fatal illness as a child.
“I stood on stage for 81 shows staring up at the beautiful face of my mother and wondering what she must’ve been thinking as she waved goodbye to me from her hospital window,” she wrote, sharing photos of her mother’s image on stage at one of her recent Celebration Tour shows.

“I stepped into the station wagon and shut the door not knowing it was the last time I’d see her,” she continued in her post. “Nobody told me my mother was dying – I just watched her disintegrate mysteriously and then she disappeared and there was no explanation except that she had gone to sleep which explains My Tumultuous relationship with sleep.”

Trending on Billboard

The “Material Girl” singer’s mother, Madonna Louise Ciccone, died at age 30 after a battle with breast cancer in 1963. The future superstar was just five years old when it happened.

“When I stepped out on the stage and looked up at my mothers face every night,” added the seven-time Grammy winner, “I said hello I said goodbye. I said Thank you. I hope you’re proud of me. I said Please protect me and keep me sane.”

Now 65, Madonna is a mother to six kids, including Lourdes Leon, whom she shares with ex-boyfriend Carlos Leon, and son Rocco Ritchie, whom she welcomed with ex-husband Guy Ritchie. She and the director went on to adopt David shortly after the musician founded her charity organization Raising Malawi in 2006. Later, she adopted Mercy, then Stella and Estere — all three of whom are also from Malawi — as a single mother.

“Tonight all of my children sleep Under one roof which is Rare and comforting,” Madonna noted in her post, which also featured photos of all of her kids. “They grow up too fast and spin out in different directions And yes I have a hard time letting go … I became very close to my children on this tour. We clung to each other. In the long hours we worked and struggled. They helped me manifest my dreams.”

The post comes about a week after the Queen of Pop wrapped the Celebration Tour with a record-breaking show at Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana Beach Saturday (May 4), an event that saw more than 1.6 million fans show up for the free performance. The concert put a bow on several months of performances following the tour’s kickoff in London in October.

All four of Madge’s youngest kids joined her as fellow performers on the trek, for which she had Mercy accompany her on piano during “Bad Girl,” duetted with David on “Mother and Father” and danced with twins Stella and Estere to “Don’t Tell Me.”

“They never stopped practicing… they never stopped cheering me on and supporting me,” the star gushed about her children in a recent post. “They were also going to school and rehearsing every night. !! . am so very proud of all of them.”

Maya Rudolph has officially achieved “Mother” status on Saturday Night Live.
During her opening monologue on the Mother’s Day episode on May 11, the former SNL cast member gave a show-stopping musical performance that channeled Madonna‘s hit song “Vogue” and Beyonce‘s Renaissance aesthetics.

The glitzy monologue opened with the actress-comedian mentioning to the audience that she’s a four-time mother. SNL cast member Bowen Yang quickly chimed in to remind her, “But Maya, look — you’re not just a mom. You’re Mother,” adding, “You were the first to slay the house down boots, queen!”

Rudolph takes a liking to the new title and celebrates with a throbbing dance number while sporting a reflective black bodysuit and strutting through Studio 8H — aka the “House of Rockefeller” — surrounded by elaborately dressed backup dancers.

Trending on Billboard

“I’m your mother/ I’m your mother,” she repeats in a Madonna-esque fashion. “I’m your… Oops, I’ve made you dance/ Remember that movie when I pooped my pants?/ When you were a baby, you pooped your pants and I changed your diaper/ I’m your mother.”

SNL‘s Chloe Fineman and her adorable dog interrupt the party by asking Rudolph if “dog moms” should also be honored on Mother’s Day. “What about them?” she replies. “And honey, that’s not a dog, that’s a b—-.”

Saturday’s SNL marked Rudolph’s third time hosting the long-running sketch comedy show since leaving the program as a cast member 17 years ago.

Elsewhere during the episode, Rudolph reprised her role as Beyonce for a hilarious parody of the chicken wing-themed YouTube series Hot Ones. In the sketch, a follow-up to her parody from 2021, the comedian dons a cowboy hat and red, white and blue getup similar to the outfit Queen Bey sports on the cover of her latest album, Cowboy Carter, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in early April.

Watch Rudolph’s SNL monologue below. For those without cable, the broadcast streams on Peacock, which you can sign up for at the link here. Having a Peacock account also gives fans access to previous SNL episodes.

Instead of annually, Mother’s Day is a year-round celebration for Brittney Brock and Moms In Music.
Founded by Brock in 2023, the community-fostering organization is dedicated to empowering, supporting and advocating “for women in music who are mothers, in mothering roles or on the journey to motherhood.” Its mission statement further notes, “We are a community of female music creators and music professionals who have come together to connect and empower one another to fulfill our true potential in an industry where motherhood has traditionally been viewed as taboo and where women are often marginalized.”

It was while working as president of operations for record label 10K Projects that Brock began envisioning the need for an organization like Moms In Music. “The reasons came from my personal experience as a woman and a woman of color in the business,” Brock recalls. Her industry background includes serving as Usher’s day-to-day manager and as an A&R executive at Def Jam.

“When I became pregnant in 2019,” Brock continues, “I was looking for other women who had been down the path that I was about to go down. I wanted to be able to ask questions and find resources. But I couldn’t really find anything or anyone that felt like a safe space to talk about it. I began talking with other women in the industry who shared the same sentiment: we needed a community; we needed to be able to build our own table.”

Trending on Billboard

Welcoming new members on a quarterly basis, Moms In Music stands at just under 200 members having just announced its Q2 class. Encompassing all genres and facets of the industry  as well as including artists and executives, the organization counts notable members such as former Capitol Music Group chairwoman/CEO Michelle Jubelirer, Grammy-winning artist Melanie Fiona, Grammy-nominated songwriter Makeba Riddick, background vocalist Rachel Beauregard (Maren Morris, Hozier) and trumpeter Crystal Torres, who played on Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour accompanied by a very visible baby bump.

In tandem with its launch last year, the organization hosted its inaugural Moms In Music brunch. Sponsored by the Recording Academy and Songwriters of North America (SONA), the event honored Grammy-winning artist Faith Evans, creative director/choreographer Jamaica Craft (Ciara, Usher) and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Dionne Farris. Plans are underway for a second annual brunch again in September.

During the day, Brock doubles as CEO of King Creative Group, which she established after leaving 10K Projects. The Atlanta-based firm provides talent management and operations consulting. Among the clients in its admin division: Quality Control Music.

By no means, however, is Brock’s day job sacrificing the passion and determination that sparked her vision for Moms In Music. “Another of our goals is to be a source of inspiration for the generations that will come after us,” she declares. “It’s something I wish that I would have had.”

In the wake of the call for more diversity, equity and inclusion over the last several years, what positive changes have you witnessed for women in music?

Transparency is starting to happen a bit more just in terms of how the business operates. That’s because artists are becoming smarter about the business; wanting to maintain a level of independence. But with it also has to come a level of education in terms of how you do it and how you do it successfully. I’m inspired when I hear about artists going the independent route or choosing to be creative in how they structure their deals because they understand the mutual value that’s coming to the table. When it comes to moms specifically, we’ve seen a change in the last five to 10 years with artists being more vocal about being proud to be a mom; that family is a priority. Artists like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Ciara and others who are succeeding in their careers while shattering the misconception that a woman has to sacrifice or give something up. The more that we’re able to have spaces like Moms In Music and other organizations such as FAM [Family Alliance in Music] with which we’re partnered. The big picture goal is to be part of the disruption that we already see happening. You can’t be what you can’t see.

Speaking of which, what about women executives and the challenges they’re still facing?

The more faith we have in women and moms in the C-suite, the more they can advocate. The industry overall has a lot of work to do in terms of building better leaders who are delegating; who are managing in a way that is supportive for their team. Look at organizations that have great leaders. For instance, Jacqueline Saturn [Virgin Music Group president, North America/exec. vp of global artist relations]. I worked with Jacqueline when I was 10K. Literally everyone who’s on Jacqueline’s staff doesn’t want to go anywhere because she leads from a place of support. She’s created a safe space for her team where they feel comfortable coming to her or her executives as a team and say, “This is what I need.” And they support that. The more that we’re able to build better leaders at the top, there’s no choice but for that to trickle down to the rest of the organization.

What kind of support does Moms In Music provide?

We focus on the personal and the professional. All of our support and programming are built around our four core pillars: physical wellness, financial wellness, professional development and spiritual/mental health. For example, a few days ago we brought in a financial wellness specialist from an organization called Moms with Benefits. And the specialist did a full presentation on topics like how long you can ask for extended maternity leaves and what you can do in terms of taxes and other matters that most of us didn’t have a clue about. We also recently presented a panel built around a series we’re launching called “More Than a Mom” that talks about how to reclaim your identity in motherhood.

Once you become a member, you have access to our members-only portal, our own mini-Facebook featuring whatever information you’d like to have available to other members so you’re able to network with each other. We also have a forum that lists our events plus recaps, videos, various resources and member feedback. Our virtual events, at least one per month, are generally open to anyone who wants to join. But our recaps and video replays are for members only. Next Monday [May 13], we’re doing a mixer in Nashville during Music Biz 2024 that’s open to anyone who wants to learn more about Moms In Music because we’re looking to further build our brand awareness. Leading into Mother’s Day, we presented three programs earlier this week. We’re also doing free giveaways to members each week this month.

How has establishing Moms In Music shaped your own journey as a business executive and mother?

To be very honest, I didn’t want kids. I was so career-focused, trying to climb the corporate ladder. That was literally all I could think about. Then everything changed. Now I’m so glad that God knew what I needed more than I knew. Because it’s changed my whole perspective on life. It’s given me purpose in a way I didn’t know that I needed. It’s also helped me tap into my strengths, my superpowers. I’m a way better executive since becoming a mom because I understand how to delegate. I understand how to prioritize like during the little window of time that you get after [school] drop off. I get so much done because I’m laser-focused. And being a mom has also helped me realize how much time I was wasting before. Just kind of chasing my tail, right? It’s helped me to understand purpose in a way that I’ve never understood before. Motherhood is definitely the hardest job I’ve ever had, from the minute I open my eyes at 5:15 a.m. and don’t stop moving untii 9:30 p.m. But it’s also the most amazing and fulfilling.

Motherhood can inspire a number of profound changes, not only personally but also artistically. For many singers, becoming mothers affects their creative approaches, priorities and overall messages.

With Mother’s Day just around the corner — the second Sunday of May in the United States and other countries, May 10 in Mexico — new mothers in Latin music enlighten us on how motherhood has inspired their creativity.

(See also our list of “25 Latin Songs to Celebrate Mother’s Day”.)

This year, for example, Kali Uchis released Orquídeas, her fourth studio album. The production pays homage to Colombia’s national flower, which symbolizes beauty and resilience, but is also a celebration of femininity in which the artist shares her reflections as a new mother. Uchis revealed her first pregnancy with longtime partner, rapper Don Toliver, in the music video for her double track “Tu Corazón Es Mío” / “Diosa.”

Another touching story comes from Colombian couple Greeicy and Mike Bahía, who chose the music video for their 2022 single “Att: Amor” as a tender announcement of their impending parenthood. The song’s refrain, “Whenever there’s love, we’ll be witnesses of the most beautiful creation,” resonates with their fans.

Cazzu, another key figure in the contemporary Latin music scene, caused buzz when she announced that she was expecting her partner Christian Nodal’s child. During a concert at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, she dramatically dropped her white coat to show her baby bump, turning her performance into a personal moment.

Below, Kali Uchis, Yuridia, Greeicy and more women in Latin music share how motherhood has expanded and deepened their creative process, in their own words.

Additional reporting by Ingrid Fajardo and Jessica Roiz.
