Kendrick Lamar put the Hip-Hop world on notice after dropping a verse on “Like That” from Future and Metro Boomin‘s new WE DON’T TRUST YOU project. K-Dot revisited his “Control” verse days and restored the feeling after aiming shots at Drake and J. Cole while declaring himself the best among the so-called “Big Three.”
Kendrick Lamar has been spending more time focused on his pgLang brand and assisting the career of his cousin, Baby Keem to great effect. The former TDE standout has often been mentioned in the same tier as Drake and J. Cole, with many thinking the trio would clique up one day and shift the entire ecosystem.
K-Dot put those hopes and dreams to rest on “Like That” and didn’t mince words at all. Some are of the mind that Lamar has taken subliminal shots from Drizzy over the years, in particular, related to their status within the Hip-Hop hierarchy.
From “Like That”:
“Okay, let’s get it up, it’s time for him to prove that he’s a problem/N*ggas clickin’ up, but cannot be legit, no 40 Water, tell ’em/Ah, yeah, huh, yeah, get up with me/F*ck sneak dissin’, first person shooter, I hope they came with three switches/I crash out, like, “F*ck rap,” diss Melle Mel if I had to”
In a bid to distance himself from the pack, Lamar added, “Motherf*ck the big three, n*gga, it’s just big me” which left nothing to the imagination.
This isn’t the first time Kendrick Lamar caused a stir. Back in 2013 on Big Sean’s “Control,” Kung Fu Kenny named names and essentially dared everyone to try his pen and had people not even involved in the jabs responding to the verse. Time will tell if Drake or J. Cole will respond, considering the latter has always represented his connection to Lamar as friendly.
Again, this could also be traced to a perceived beef between Future and Drake, although that hasn’t been confirmed. Further, Metro Boomin has had recent issues with the Canadian superstar that went public, adding to the lore of discord between them all.
On X, formerly Twitter, folks are chiming in about Kendrick Lamar’s jabs toward Drake and J. Cole. Check out the reactions below.

Future and Metro Boomin have collaborated several times over the years and now the pair will embark on dropping a pair of releases in the next couple of months. The first of the projects’ album titles has been announced, the aptly named We Don’t Trust You.
Future, who is responsible for delivering the iconic producer tag for Metro Boomin, hasn’t released a full-length project since 2022’s I Never Liked You. The two hitmakers will deliver We Don’t Trust You on March 22, with the second of their announced projects coming on April 12.

The announcement was made with a stylish trailer showing the two driving all-white luxury vehicles before hopping out of the rides and taking a stroll in a desert with dramatic effect.
Future and Metro Boomin’s professional connection dates back to 2013, with Metro Boomin lending his production touch to the Freebandz honcho’s tracks since that initial meeting. Amazingly, this is the first time the two have locked in for full projects.

Metro Boomin is no stranger to fame and that comes with the requisite smartphone cameras in his presence, capturing moments perhaps not meant for the public. One such video surfaced of Metro Boomin doing a “sniff test” which the woman in the video used to make a joke that the producer didn’t find amusing.
X user @pxssywater, which explains quite a lot if we’re keeping it funky, posted a video of Metro Boomin at a cookout during an unspecified time. While Young Metro is cheffing it up, the woman holds up her fingers for the sniff test and she apparently passed with flying colors considering the jubilation shown in the video.

“If Young Metro don’t trust you, it ain’t good coochie,” read the caption with @pxssywater’s X reply.

In response, Metro wrote in a X reply, “u so lame enjoy the clout” to which @pxssywater’s replied with, “n*gga you know it was just joke/skit that you agreed to do… this video went viral yrs ago ….. your ppl the one who sent it to me” completed with corresponding emojis to convey the seriousness of things.
Currently, the video of Metro Boomin sniffing @pxssywater’s fingers has exploded online once more with over two million views and counting of the clip in question.

You can add Drake and Metro Boomin to the list of rap stars who don’t get along. Drizzy’s recent jab at the producer has prompted a response.

TMZ is reporting that Champagne Papi recently hosted a livestream that is now going viral. On Saturday (Dec. 2), the beatsmith took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to vent his disappointment on his album Heroes & Villains not receiving its just due in terms of honors. “Yet Her Loss still keeps winning Rap Album of the Year over H&V. Proof that award shows are just politics and not for me,” the tweet read. “Idc about awards honestly, the true award and REWARD is knowing that the music I spend so much time on brings joy to people’s everyday lives.”

Naturally, the post landed on Drake’s radar. He soon unfollowed Metro Boomin on social media, and Metro deleted the aforementioned post. During a livestream the “Wick Man” MC addressed both his fans and haters. “To the rest of you — the non-believers, the underachievers, the tweet and deleters — you guys make me sick to my stomach, fam,” he said. “Look at my eyes — you guys wanna do something? That’s what I thought.”
On Monday (Dec. 13), Metro Boomin posted a skit that fans believe is the unofficial response to Drake. The video shows four Black males wearing straight hair wigs talking in what is perceived as “frat boys” at a basketball court. “Whoa calm down Jamal, don’t pull out the 9,” one of the actors says.

The two have previously worked on Drake and Future’s 2015 collaboration album, What A Time To Be Alive. You can see Drake address things below.

According to TMZ, the popular producer received the keys to his hometown city of St. Louis, Thursday (Dec. 14). But Metro Boomin didn’t receive the honor for the illustrious work he’s put into the music game, but for the efforts he’s put into bettering the lives of single mothers in his city via his “Single Moms Are The Real Superheroes” campaign.
If only more rappers and entertainers would take such an initiative to celebrate homegrown heroes like this.
TMZ reports:

This year marks Metro’s 7th “Single Moms Are The Real Superheroes” campaign and we’re told the annual event is now being reimagined as “Leslie Joanne Single Mothers And Caregivers Appreciate Day” to honor his late mother, who died in 2022.
Little did he know, the city also had a gift for him — December 14 will officially be “Leland ‘Metro Boomin’ Wayne Day” going forward.
The Diamond-selling producer teamed up with Amazon Access and Rung for Women for this year’s function … set up to assist single mothers with career coaching, skills training, and additional needed resources.

It was an emotional day, capping off Metro’s amazing year … he helmed the “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” soundtrack, partnered with the St. Louis Cardinals and earned a Producer of the Year Grammy nomination.

After years of teasing a collaborative album, Metro Boomin and Future are finally going to be going into the lab to cook up an LP to keep heads nodding, booties shaking and necks snapping.

On Tuesday (April 18), the super producer from St. Louis shared an image of his Coachella set. He shared it with the Toxic King and in the caption dropped the bomb that their fans have been waiting to hear for years when he wrote, “After a 10+ year journey it was surreal to perform @coachella in front of 20k+ with my brother @future 🦅🦅🦅 Metro Pluto album otw🔥🔥🔥🔥”

That Metro Pluto album is bound to do big numbers, b.

The announcement comes a month after Metro Boomin told Flaunt magazine that he “would definitely bet” on a duet album with Future dropping sometime this year. Though that wasn’t exactly a confirmation so much as it was a confident prediction, it now seems like the project will indeed be happening and their fans can’t wait to see what they serve up once they get out the kitchen.
Real talk it seemed like it was only a matter of time before these two churned out an entire project together after Future let the world know that “If young Metro don’t trust you, I’m gon’ shoot you.” You don’t ride for someone like that and not break bread together. Just sayin.’
How many cuts into the album is in the can or whether or not the project is even officially underway is anyone’s guess, but best believe heads will be streaming the sh*t out that joint once it hits platforms later this year.

Metro Boomin has been creeping back into the studio just months after dropping his third Billboard 200-topping album Heroes & Villains in December. And it looks like he’s already cooking up another project with none other than J.I.D, which a rep from the rapper’s team confirmed to Billboard on Wednesday (March 29).

The superproducer took to Twitter on Tuesday to share some pics of the new dynamic duo from the studio with the caption, “Got a lot of new music coming but when me and @JIDsv drop,” followed by a string of fire emojis. The “151 Rum” rapper commented, “I love working with u brudda, it’s an honor,” to which Metro replied, “Honor is mine family,” with a handshake emoji.

Honor is mine family 🤝🏾— Metro Boomin (@MetroBoomin) March 28, 2023

Metro later wrote “Yessir!!” in response to the Debating Hip-Hop Twitter account, announcing, “we’re really getting a @JIDsv x @MetroBoomin album.”

He might’ve hinted at the album earlier in the year when he sat down with Streetz Is Watchin Radio and told DJ Drama about a collab project that he was releasing this year. “I’mma just say when this drop, honestly, it’ll be like one of the biggest things of this generation,” the producer said. “And you know I be chilling, I don’t like to just jump out and say that, but I can confidently say that.”

In his Flaunt cover story, Metro confirmed a collab album with Future is also on the way, affirming, “I would bet on it. I would definitely bet on it.” Metro is clearly no stranger to collab albums, having worked on Without Warning alongside 21 Savage and Offset in 2017, Double or Nothing with Big Sean the same year, and Savage Mode II with 21 Savage (with special narrative assistance from Morgan Freeman) in 2020.

Metro Boomin has joined the ranks of musical artists selling their publishing catalogs, recently making a deal that earns him $70 million.
According to reports, the producer behind hits from Migos, Kanye West, and Future has sold off part of his existing publishing catalog to the Shamrock Capital firm. Sources with knowledge of the deal estimate that the “Jumpman” producer received close to $70 million. Representatives for Metro Boomin’ declined to comment on the transaction, and Shamrock Capital didn’t respond to press inquiries.

News of the deal comes as Metro Boomin’ has recently released a new album, HEROES & VILLAINS. The album contains features from Takeoff, Future, Chris Brown, 21 Savage, and The Weeknd. The deal is only for “part” of the catalog, but there is no information as to what that includes.
Music catalog purchases have held the attention of those in the music industry as well as observers. Last month, reports stated that the estate of the late superstar Michael Jackson is planning to sell half of its interests in his music catalog for an estimated price of $800 to $900 million. Hip-Hop artists are now finding themselves in the eyesight of interested firms – Dr. Dre sold a collection of music streams and other assets to Shamrock Holdings and Universal Music Group for a sum close to $250 million.Justin Bieber has also taken the plunge and sold the rights to his music catalog in January for an estimated $200 million.
The discussion over artists’ catalogs and Hip-Hop have also been in the spotlight due to the recent arrival of the entire catalog of the iconic group De La Soul last Friday (March 3rd). The catalog had been withheld from digital streaming platforms for years in a fight with their label, Tommy Boy Records and its parent company, Warner Music Group. In addition, the Quality Control independent label which is home to Migos, Lil Yachty and Lil Baby was acquired in a major deal by the South Korean entertainment firm Hybe America for $320 million.

Producer, songwriter and artist Metro Boomin – a.k.a. Leland Tyler Wayne – has sold a portion of his entire existing publishing catalog to Shamrock Capital for close to $70 million, sources close to the deal tell Billboard.

News of the sale arrives on the heels of his second album HEROES & VILLAINS, which was released on Dec. 2, 2022. The record was peppered with some of the biggest names in music, including features from Young Thug, Travis Scott, Future, Don Toliver, Chris Brown, A$AP Rocky, Gunna, and late Migos member Takeoff. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, making it his second album in a row to hit No. 1 as an artist.

As one of rap and R&B’s most defining creatives, Metro Boomin has helped craft hits like “Bad and Boujee” by Migos, “Mask Off” by Future, “Congratulations” by Post Malone, “Bank Account” by 21 Savage, “Father Stretch My Hands, Pt. 1” by Kanye West, “Jumpman” by Drake and Future, “Heartless” by The Weeknd, “Waves” by Kanye West, “Child’s Play” by Drake, “Tuesday” by iLoveMakonnen, and many more.

The multi-hyphenate musician has had 99 total entries on the Hot 100 chart as a producer, including two No. 1s and 10 top 10s. As an artist, Metro Boomin has 46 total entries on the Hot 100. He has spent 18 weeks at No. 1 on the Rap Producers chart and three weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 Producers and Hot 100 Songwriters charts.

Representatives for Shamrock did not return Billboard’s requests for comment. A representative for Metro Boomin declined to comment.

Shamrock was founded in 1978 as Roy E. Disney’s family office and has since become an active, powerful buyer in the music catalog investment space. It’s most notable investment being that of Taylor Swift’s Big Machine catalog which the firm bought from Scooter Braun’s Ithaca Holdings in 2020. In 2021, Shamrock expanded into the lending space with a $196 million debt fund to loan money to IP owners in entertainment.

Last month, on Feb. 2, 2023, Shamrock Capital announced that it raised $600 million in a new fund (Shamrock Capital Content Fund III) aimed at acquiring film, TV, music video games, and sports rights.

Metro Boomin’s deal, along with other recent hip-hop acquisitions — like Juice WRLD’s sale to Opus Music Group for a nine figure sum, Dr. Dre’s Shamrock and UMG deal for an estimated over $200 million, and Future’s publishing catalog sale to Influence Media Partners between $65-75 million — have proved that the genre is fueling new investor interest.

Those who have been skeptical of rap catalog sales often point to the genre’s short history, which may indicate sharper — or still unknown — decay curves from other genres like rock and pop. Decay curves, which are based on past performance of other songs in the genre, refer to when the song levels out into a predictable state of income generation.

But the 50th anniversary of hip-hop special at the 2023 Grammy awards and its continued dominance on streaming platforms may reveal that rap is ready to become another sought-after genre for buyers.

“There are certain names that have been around for a long enough period that they are now of an evergreen standard,” City National entertainment banking leader Denise Colletta recently told Billboard. “Those household names in hip-hop will continue to resonate with audiences.”
