Nate Smith Reveals His Favorite Northern California Slang | Billboard Country Live

Nate Smith reveals his favorite Northern California slang at the Billboard Country Live event.

Nate Smith:
Hi, I’m Nate Smith, and here are some of my favorite Northern California slang words.

In Northern California, we say “hella.” Southern California doesn’t like that — they think it’s kind of silly, but we say “hella cool,” “hella this,” all that, so we say that all the time.

Another word we say is “sick” all the time. I don’t know if people say it over here in Tennessee, but we say “everything’s sick.” “Sick” is a good thing. If I say you are a “sick person,” man, just know that that’s a compliment from the bottom of my heart.

I say “rad,” “everything’s rad.” It’s an old-school term, like a skateboarder term from the ’80s, probably. I think “rad” is making a comeback.

And those are some of my favorite Northern California slang.

Lil Wayne On Inspiring the Next Generation of Rappers, Young Money, ‘Carter VI’ & More | Billboard Cover

Lil Wayne talks about inspiring the next generation of rappers, how he discovers new talent with Young Money records, how he feels about AI, how he maintains the longevity of his legendary career, teases what his fans can expect from the ‘Carter VI” and more.

Lil Wayne
I am naturally, organically, amazing. I’m one of a kind. So actually, I would love to see that thing try to duplicate this motherf–ker.

Gail Mitchell
You had a great vantage point starting at 7, signed at 11, 12 you’re professional or you’ve seen a lot of changes so I was gonna ask you what’s been the biggest changes you’ve seen in the genre since you’ve been in it?

Lil Wayne
There was no such thing as social media when I was doing this, everything’s changed because of social media. So with that said, our genre of music is no different than everything.

Gail Mitchell.
One lesson learned that you still carry with you since you started?

Lil Wayne
That answer is always the same it’s never stop. Never stopping learning. Humble yourself. Humility goes a long way. And it will keep you learning and I try to get better and better and better and better and better and better and better. That’s always my hope. That’s my whatever rule something I’ve learned or lesson whatever as far as unforgettable moments, probably my first time grabbing the mic at a block party and breaking my fear in rapping the stuff that I had wrapped in the mirror for like thousands of hours that night before.

Gail Mitchell
Did you ever subscribe to the notion but hip hop is was only a young man’s game. That’s what they used to say back in the day.

Lil Wayne
No, because when I was growing up all the rappers Whoa, let me I guess I’m just not from that narrative was around because when I started people was way older than me. Everybody was older than me. So it was never a young man’s game I’ve always felt when I was a young man, I had to fight my way in.

Juanes Talks SummerStage Cancellation, His New Album, Mental Health & More | Billboard News

Colombian superstar Juanes stopped by Billboard News to talk about the abrupt cancellation of his July 12 SummerStage show in New York City, his new album Vida Cotidiana, his struggles with mental health and more.

Juanes:
If I hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t be sitting here telling you I feel great!

Hi, how’s it going? I’m Juanes, and you’re watching Billboard News.

Leila Cobo:
Juanes, welcome to Billboard!

Juanes:
How are you doing?

Leila Cobo:
We’re here in New York, and Juanes was performing at  SummerStage, which is located in Central Park. For those of you who don’t know … it has a capacity for 5,000 people, but 15,000 people arrived and they had to stop the concert. I know it was terrible for you because you were in the middle of playing your second song when the police arrived. Tell us what happened from your point of view.

Juanes:
Well, we were invited to perform at the SummerStage through [Latin Alternative Music Conference] and too many people showed up. There were way more people than they were expecting. Around 5,000 people entered the venue, but there were around 12,000 people outside. During the second song, I looked back, and the police were on stage. I was like, “What is going on?” And they told me, “You need to stop and you need to leave now.” They explained that there were too many people there, and they were very concerned about people’s safety, and that was the most important thing. It was really sad because we were excited to play. We had rehearsed songs from the new album, you know. Just imagine it, Leila.

Tetris Kelly
And he even got honest on why he cheated and how the Internet bringing it up is exhausting.

Tetris Kelly
Aso in Cardi news. We’ve all seen the video of her throwing a mic at a fan after they threw a drink on her But did she encourage it?

Tetris Kelly
Earlier in the show, the “Bodak” artist may have wanted to be splashed but later she thought a fan went too far. And that fans seemed to be sorry. Well, the mic bounced off that fan and hit someone beside her and that person went to the Las Vegas Metro PD the next day to report the incident. Yikes. Now she could face a battery charge. But as we continue to say everybody just stopped throwing stuff.

Taylor Swift Owns ‘August,’ But What Other Month-Themed Songs Have Hit the Hot 100?

It’s the first day of August, which has us thinking about Taylor Swift’s timely song “August” from her 2020 album Folklore.

Folklore was surprise-released on July 24, 2020 — so just ahead of August that year — and in the Augusts since, we’ve seen the song re-emerge on various Billboard charts timed to the month. Last year, “August” returned to the Alternative Streaming Songs chart, re-entering at No. 21 in the July 29-Aug. 4 tracking week. It also made its first appearance on the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts in August 2022. Also last year, it hit No. 1 on the LyricFind U.S. and LyricFind Global charts, for its first week atop both lists, as everyone searched for August-appropriate lyrics.

All of this got the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast wondering: What other big month-themed songs are there out there? And does every month have its own Hot 100 hit? Plus, Swift’s “August” has so far peaked at No. 23 on the Hot 100 — the week of Folklore’s release — but what is the highest-charting month hit ever?

Listen to Katie & Keith’s full discussion on this week’s Billboard Pop Shop Podcast below to find out all the answers to those questions and more:

Cardi B Throws Mic at Fan, Kelly Clarkson in Vegas, Jason Aldean Hits No. 1 & More | Billboard News

Cardi B got even with a concertgoer who tossed a drink at her during the rapper’s performance in Las Vegas on Saturday. Kelly Clarkson kicked off her 10-day residency last week and hilariously reacted to being called a fan’s hall pass. Jason Aldean’s controversial track, “Try That in A Small Town” has reached No. 1 on the Hot 100. And more!

Tetris Kelly
Cardi B fights back after a fan throws a drink on her. Kelly Clarkson launches her Vegas residency and the videos are going viral country and “K-Pop” are taking over the charts. We break down our final four and our Fan Army Face-Off and Lauren Spencer Smith teaches us some Canadian slang.

Tetris Kelly
Welcome back to Billboard News. I’m Tetris Kelly, and it’s Monday July 31st. And for some reason, we’re still talking about fans throwing things at artists on stage, but at least Cardi B is fighting back. Cardi B ain’t the one in a video circulating social media the rapper is seen throwing up mic at her fan. Over the weekend Cardi B hurled her microphone at an unruly audience member after they threw a drink on her during a performance at Drai’s beach club in Las Vegas. She was in the middle of her hit song “Bodak Yellow” when the incident occurred. In the clip you can still hear her background vocals going as she throws the mic as her security enters the crowd. The crowd cutting herself retweeted the clip captioning it, “Jealous as b*tch”/ I’m not even mad at Cardi this trend needs to stop before artists are putting up plexiglass walls in front of stages or stop performing altogether. Thinking of throwing things at people on stage Kelly Clarkson addressed it at the launch of her Vegas residency in the most Kelly way. Kelly Clarkson launched Chemistry her new Las Vegas residency, and they had all the songs and the sass and the fan videos have taken over social media.

Lauren Spencer Smith Reveals Her Favorite Canadian Slang | Billboard

Lauren Spencer Smith reveals her favorite Canadian slang.

Lauren Spencer Smith
Hey, I’m Lauren Spencer Smith and these are my favorite Canadian slang.

My first Canadian slang is a Toque, which apparently are called like beanies, or toboggans in America. And that’s not what a toboggan is, but we call them toques The hats you wear in the winter.

The second thing is a Loonie. That’s what we call our dollar coin, which is not a dollar bill. Do you guys have $2 bills now? Just $1 bills, but we have a coin for $2 called a Toonie.

And the third one is a Canuck, which people think Canadians are called Canucks, but it’s actually a hockey team in Vancouver. And those are my favorite Canadian slangs.
