Gloria Estefan Talks New Album ‘Raíces,’ The Pope, Immigration & More | Billboard News In Conversation

Gloria Estefan is about to release her first Spanish album in 18 years, ‘Raíces’. She sits down to talk about how the album was created with her husband, Emilio, dedicating a song to her grandson, her opinions on the new Pope, her thoughts on immigration issues in the U.S., and more.

Are you excited for Gloria Estefan’s new album? Let us know in the comments!

Gloria Estefan:

Hi I’m Gloria Estefan, and welcome to Billboard Latin!

Sigal Ratner-Arias:

Congratulations on ‘Raíces,’ your 30th album in 50 years, and the first in Spanish in 18 years. It’s a beautiful way to celebrate your anniversary. Was it important for you to make an album in your native language?

Absolutely, I wanted to return full circle. Emilio didn’t even notice that it was my 50 years and I told him when he came to me with the idea of  “Raíces,” and when I wrote the song, he said “I want you to sing it.” In that moment, I was super focused on ‘Basura,’ the musical. So I told him, “Babe, I can’t. I can’t change my mind for this, but I would like to create a new album that’s tropical in Spanish.” And he tells me, “Do you trust me?” And I go, “Who else am I going to trust more than you?”

The title obviously explains what it is. “Mi Tierra” was an homage to Cuba. What is “Raíces” for you?

Well we picked “Raíces” as the title because roots are also in the land. It’s like a modern “Mi Tierra” because when we had the concept to do the album for ‘Mi Tierra,’ we wanted to highlight an era of Cuban music that was really rich that was celebrated all throughout the world before BC. Before Castro.

Narrator:

How do Alejandro Sanz and Shakira write a song? Alejandro Sanz, the Spanish idol, reunited with his friend Shakira to write “Bésame,” the lead single from his new album ‘¿Y Ahora Qué?’ Shakira and Sanz were unable to meet in the studio to record the song because both have incredibly busy schedules. As a result, the composition and recording process took place long-distance. Given that both artists are perfectionists, the WhatsApp conversations were “intense,” says Sanz.

Sanz spoke exclusively with Billboard for the cover story of Billboard Español and shared how it was to work with Shakira, Grupo Frontera and Manuel Turizo. He also talked about his new tour and the process of creating an album that has reignited his enthusiasm and passion, making him feel great again. Chris Brown Arrested & Released From UK Jail, Set to Continue ‘Breezy Bowl’ Tour | Billboard News

Chris Brown was arrested in the U.K. for “inflicting grievous bodily harm” at a nightclub in London in February 2023, and he has since been released on bail for $6.7 million. Keep watching for the full story.

What do you think of Chris Brown’s release? Let us know in the comments.

Narrator:

Chris Brown is throwing deuces to a U.K. jail as he’s been released on bail. Breezy was arrested on May 15 while at the Lowry Hotel in Salford. He was charged with “inflicting grievous bodily harm,” which is tied to an alleged February 2023 London nightclub attack. The “Residuals” singer was initially denied bail on May 16 and remanded to remain in custody until June for his next hearing, before he was granted a seven-figure bond on Wednesday, May 21. Upon release, Breezy took to social media to celebrate his release, posting on his Instagram Story: “From the cage to the stage!!!” Brown wrote in the post, before adding, “Breezy Bowl.” The “Breezy Bowl” is a reference to Brown’s upcoming stadium tour, which was put in jeopardy with him in jail. The tour is slated to kick off on June 8 in Amsterdam, but there were worries that the singer wouldn’t be able to perform if he wasn’t granted bail, since he was slated to be back in a London court later in June. According to Reuters, Brown was ordered to pay $5.4 million now, with an additional $1.3 million due in a week. With his now updated court schedule, Brown will find himself back in a London courthouse on June 20, which is bookended by a pair of performances on June 19 and June 21. Breezy’s tour is back on track, kicking off on June 8 in Amsterdam. But don’t worry—the Breezy Bowl will be making its way to the States on July 30 for a performance in Miami. Hey, Carín, your roots are in Hermosillo, your hometown. What about Hermosillo defines you today? Is it the way of being? Is it the way you behave in the world, or what you like? What do you have in you from Hermosillo?

I think it’s everything. I am always really proud, extremely proud of Hermosillo and try to take it anywhere. It has given me many things, right? As it’s near the border, and it’s not a big city it still keeps many of its traditions that are really rooted. So this mixture of modern and rooter things and everything that came to us for being so near to the border.

Donald Trump Accuses Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen & More of Partaking In ‘Illegal Election Scam’ | Billboard News

Donald Trump has taken to social media to accuse Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen and more for participating in an “illegal election scam” during Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign. Keep watching the video to see what the president had to say about the celebrities who participated in Kamala’s campaign.

What do you think of Donald Trump’s accusations? Let us know in the comments.

Narrator:

President Trump has accused Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen and others of participating in what he calls an “illegal election scam” run by Kamala Harris’ campaign during the 2024 election. The president is calling for a “major investigation” into their “corrupt” endorsements of former vice president Kamala Harris. Trump took his frustrations to Truth Social, where he questioned how much Bruce, Beyoncé, Bono, and Oprah were paid.

“How much did Kamala Harris pay Bruce Springsteen for his poor performance during her campaign for president? What about Beyoncé? …And how much went to Oprah, and Bono??? I am going to call for a major investigation into this matter. It’s not legal! For these unpatriotic ‘entertainers,’ this was just a corrupt & unlawful way to capitalize on a broken system. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!”

The president didn’t just make one post about the former vice president’s celebrity endorsements—nope, he doubled down on claims that this was an illegal election scam.

“According to news reports, Beyoncé was paid $11,000,000 to walk onto a stage, quickly endorse Kamala, and walk off to loud booing for never having performed, not even one song! This is an illegal election scam at the highest level! It is an illegal campaign contribution! Bruce Springsteen, Oprah, Bono, and, perhaps, many others, have a lot of explaining to do!!!”
