New York City Mayor Eric Adams was met with displays of disapproval at a law school graduation, with some publicly turning their backs on him.
Last Friday (May 12th), Sudha Setty, the City University of New York School of Law dean, introduced Mayor Adams to the crowd of graduates and families. As she made note of his record as a police officer, boos steadily rose from the crowd. As he took to the stage to speak, many of the graduates visibly turned their backs on him. Others present at the closed-door event stated that there were more boos and derisive words shouted, with one source claiming to see a couple of raised middle fingers directed towards him.
Adams seemed undeterred by the protests. “We have a lot of challenges, a lot of things that it needs discipline. And just as you see these graduates here, I know what it is to protest,” he said, which was met by yells from the crowd. As he concluded his remarks which at some points were met by applause, he did note the backlash. “We’re watching a clear lack of desire to even participate in healthy dialogue,” he said. “My message today to the graduates,” Adams continued, “my message to those who believe that their beliefs are the only beliefs in a diversified city like New York, my message to you, instead of being a detached spectator in the full contact sport called life, get on the field and participate about improving the lives of the people of this city.”
The protests against Adams, reminiscent of how New York Police Department officers visibly shunned then-Mayor Bill de Blasio at a police funeral, come as he faces high criticism for refusing to condemn the murder of Jordan Neely by a white ex-Marine, Daniel Penny on a subway train. Adams also has been blasted for presenting a city budget that would cut 235 faculty and staff positions from CUNY’s network, which has been rallied against by students and professors.
“He’s committed to carceral discrimination against the poor, even if he was an internal reformer when he was in the police,” said Genevieve Ward, a second-year student who saw a video of the speech. “It’s disingenuous for himself to align his interest in police with the interests of what we’re taught at CUNY,” she continued. “And also just the timing of it, with the killing of Jordan Neely and his absence of talking about it until two days ago.”

A new report discloses that the majority of stops made by the New York Police Department last year consisted of Black & Latino drivers, furthering concern from social justice advocates.
According to reports, findings from a comprehensive compilation of data from the New York Civil Liberties Union showed that NYPD officers stopped, searched, and arrested Black & Latino drivers at a far higher rate than white drivers last year. The report showed that more than over 670,000 drivers were stopped last year. 15,000 of those stops led to arrests, with 49% of those drivers being Black and 39% being Latino.
“Race plays a big role in what happens to motorists after they get stopped and that number just jumps off the page,” NYCLU Legal Director Chris Dunn said. “Something is wrong when you see 9 out of ten people getting arrested are Black or Latino.” The report also detailed how the amount of those stopped was equal to the amount recorded at the height of the city’s stop-and-frisk era under former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2011.
The data revealed more disturbing facts about these stops by law enforcement. The Policing Project, a research group founded at New York University, found that the NYPD only recorded data concerning the race of the driver for just over 620,000 of the stops. Another fact was that in those stops where force was used and race was recorded, 92% of the cases reported involved Black and Latino drivers. It was also found that arrests occurred only 2.2% of the time after these stops.
The news comes as the NYPD is being criticized for its actions during these traffic stops, with reports of excessive force being inflicted and civilians being shot as they’re taking place. The Civilian Complaint Review Board has investigated numerous complaints by civilians over their treatment during these stops and substantiated hundreds of them by charging officers with violating policy.
“We know that doesn’t work. We know that does not fix crime problems and we see year after year, very few people are getting arrested as a result of stop and frisk,” Dunn concluded. “Most people are getting stopped and frisked are innocent people and they’re Black and brown New Yorkers.”
More scrutiny of this report comes weeks after the death of Tyre Nichols in Memphis after he was detained at a traffic stop on January 7th. To date, five officers involved in the beating that led to his death are currently awaiting trial after being fired, then indicted. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has defended the stops in the past on several occasions.

Once again, the deadly trend of subway surfing amongst teenagers in New York City has left another family mourning as a 15-year-old high school student has become the latest victim of the dangerous practice.
According to the New York Daily News, Zackery Nazario became the latest victim of the subway surfing craze this past Monday night when he attempted to ride the top of the J train as it traveled over the Williamsburg Bridge between the Manhattan and Brooklyn boroughs. Unfortunately, Nazario was run over by the train after a beam hit him on the head and caused him to fall under the train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The MTA is reporting that a staggering 928 people were found to be train surfing in the past year alone, which is four times as many that were spotted doing the same in the previous two years. How and why subway surfing has become a popular “sport” amongst the youth is anyone’s guess. But it’s proving to be a very deadly trend amongst today’s teens and tweens. New York Mayor Eric Adams plans on addressing the issue, though he didn’t specify on how the city will go about doing so.
“We’re going to do a series of things to raise awareness,” Mayor Adams vowed Tuesday, describing the teen’s death Monday as “really traumatic.”
“This was really a terrible tragic incident of this young man. Our team is going to do a host of things, to bring awareness, to speak with young people and really show how dangerous it is.”
Naturally, subway surfing is illegal and can lead to offenders getting as much as $75 in fines and even getting hit with reckless endangerment charges. But that doesn’t seem to be deterring wannabe daredevils from risking it all for the sake of “likes” on social media in 2023. That’s something that Adams is currently taking into account as well.
“I don’t think that we have properly analyzed what social media is doing to us in general, but specifically to our young people, and I am hoping that the president calls a national blue-ribbon commission to really analyze this,” Adams said. “Some of these sites , they’re more addictive than drugs. People can’t get off them.”
“They’re robbing our children of their innocence,” he added. “The national government must come in and say, ‘What is the corporate responsibility of social media?’”
Nazario’s tragic death comes just months after 15-year-old Ka’Von Wooden died performing the same stunt on the J train where he fell on the third rail and died from severe head trauma.
Whether or not this latest tragedy is a wakeup call for train surfers remains to be seen. But as long as it’s all the rage on social media, we feel like this won’t be the last time we report on such horrible events.
Be safe out there, y’all.

NYC’s Mixxy Mayor, Eric Adams, is again picking a fight with “Woke” Democrats.
Adams double-downed on his initial remarks while directing criticism toward the New York City Council members. Following President Biden’s State of The Union address to the nation, Adams appeared on Morning Joe on Wednesday morning.
The Mayor, who doesn’t miss an event in NYC, was at SOTU as a guest of Representative Adriano Espaillat and was asked about the so-called disconnect between working-class voters and the Democratic Party.
Adams, a former registered Republican for several years, claims “a hemorrhaging of our Latino community, our AAPI communities that’s leaving the traditional Democratic base,” is happening because of “woke” policies.
The New York Mayor claims the “woke” Dems are “the loudest and those who consider themselves to be ‘woke,” and blames them for the trend.
Adams says the Democrats “have to speak at those issues that are important: jobs, public safety, educating our children, good health care. Just these common kitchen-table issues that we moved away from.”
“We’re Not For Defunding The Police”
He followed that up with an interview with CNN This Morning on Thursday, telling Don Lemon that a “small number” of the “loudest” Democrats have “hijacked the true meaning of the Democratic Party.”
“We’re not for defunding the police.” He points out. “We’re not for attacking businesses.”
He continues, “We’re for jobs. We’re for growth.”
The NYC Mayor also spoke on an ongoing matter with the City Council. Per the New York Post, the council’s Progressive Caucus asked members to sign onto a two-page “Statement of Principles.”
It read: “We will do everything we can to reduce the size and scope of the NYPD and the Department of Correction, and prioritize and fund alternative safety infrastructure that truly invests in our communities.”
According to the Gothamist’s reporting, nine caucus members left following the statement’s release.
“They’re calling for removing members of their own caucus if they don’t sign a pledge to defund the police,” Adams claims. “That is not who we are as Democrats.
The Progressive Caucus defended its policy, stating:
“Unlike the mayor, we want guidance counselors supporting our students with mental health crises instead of cops; we want social workers to get homeless New Yorkers the support they need instead of the NYPD. The mayor is cutting essential services that working New Yorkers rely on the most, and we think that approach threatens the safety of our communities,” said Progressive Caucus co-chairs Shahana Hanif and Lincoln Restler and vice-chairs Carmen De La Rosa and Jennifer Gutieěrrez.”

Jim Jones’ voice will be heard no matter the setting. He recently met NYC Mayor Eric Adams and made sure to speak up on behalf of his community.
As spotted on HipHopDX, Capo was slotted to perform with his Diplomats group at Drake’s show at the world famous Apollo theater Sunday, Jan. 22. While he was hanging out in the dressing room, he got the chance to meet Eric Adams, current Mayor of New York City. The Lobby Boy took the opportunity to express his concerns with the current state of the city; specifically the Harlem area.
“I’m not th [sic] most politically correct by [sic] I know politics as usual I chose to think of my community Harlem there r so many things we need here in our city of Harlem Nyc and who else is better to express those concerns to And I know these concerns won’t b fix over night but every step forward is a step closer” he wrote on an Instagram post.
The two seemed to make a genuine connection as the politician looked to be engaged in the conversation. Later on they exchanged their contact information. Jim made it clear that the impromptu chat left an impression on him.
“This my first time meetin any mayor from ny and he’s a black mayor which I’m a very proud to see someone who looks like me in a position of power and is takin th [sic] steps to help turn th [sic] city round from experience and political position.”

It seems like every month New York City Mayor Eric Adams finds a new way to frustrate and alienate his Big Apple constituents, and now he’s showing that he simply does not give a f*ck.
Over the weekend NYPD was criticized for taking videos of everyone attending Drake’s show at The Apollo Theater with fears that they’d be used for facial recognition. When asked about the practice, Mayor Eric Adams applauded the NYPD for the controversial tactic. Gothamist is reporting that Adams praised Police Captain Tarik Sheppard of the 28th Precinct saying “Thumbs up to that great captain,” before adding “And I encourage all of my commanding officers to be creative on how we engage with our residents,” he said, adding, “That was a safe event.”
That’s considered “engaging” with residents?! Feels more like a violation of our personal space. More and more it’s looking like Eric Adams is going to be a one-term Mayor.
A spokesperson for the 28th Precinct meanwhile said that the officer taking the videos of the people exiting the Drake concert is a part of their social media team and that “The officer was taking video for an upcoming twitter post that will highlight local community events. The video will not be utilized for any other reason.”
Yeah, ok.
Will Owen, of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project, an anti-surveillance and privacy rights group, isn’t buying that explanation (neither are we) and feels that “This is yet another example of NYPD’s racist use of surveillance technology, following the department’s long legacy of targeting rap concerts. We’re deeply concerned facial recognition may have been involved, and demand the department destroy any footage it took. This is the latest proof that the city and state must ban its use at venues once and for all.”
We doubt that Eric Adams will hear the outcry from his constituents as he’s blatantly brushing off any criticism that’s come with this past weekend’s suspect practice.
“Those who are naysayers find reasons to complain about everything,” he said. “That’s not reality. Let them keep complaining.”
What’s the chances that Eric Adams is actually a MAGA Republican on the low? Just sayin.’

The long wait is over as New York City has opened its first legal marijuana dispensary, with more slated to open within the next few months.
On Thursday (Dec. 29), the first legally licensed recreational marijuana dispensary in New York State will open in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan. The Housing Works Cannabis Company is preparing to open its doors after being given the go-ahead by Governor Kathy Hochul December 21.

“We set a course just nine months ago to start New York’s adult-use cannabis market off on the right foot by prioritizing equity, and now, we’re fulfilling that goal,” she said at a press conference announcing the decision at the time.
New York Housing Works, a minority-controlled non-profit organization serving those afflicted with HIV and AIDS, is the first of 36 dispensaries that have been licensed to sell cannabis to the general public. The state’s Cannabis Control Board is on track to issue another 139 licenses within the next few months as another 900 applicants are awaiting a decision. The operating hours will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and the dispensary will be open to the general public at 4:20 p.m. after the VIPs have their chance to patronize the place in the morning.
The opening of Housing Works Cannabis Company comes as New York City Mayor Eric Adams has issued a directive to crack down on the numerous smoke shops and bodegas selling unlicensed cannabis products that have sprung up around the city within the past year. Quality and pricing are the main reasons why these places will present stiff competition to legal dispensaries, with the unlicensed stores also drawing customers in with more colorful displays and decorations.
“Either way you can get marijuana on each block you go on, so it’s going to be the same,” said Ron, a store employee at a smoke shop in the East Village. Housing Works CEO Charles King notes that the financial disparity in operations is a concern. “Because we have to pay taxes in three different jurisdictions, we also have to charge more for our product than the illegal market does,” he said in an interview.
The listed prices for some of their products are on par with what customers would find in unlicensed shops, with an ounce of weed priced at $20 to $35 and pre-rolled joints retailing for $16 to $25 – before the 13% sales tax. But others feel this opening won’t deter the underground market that much.

Mayor Eric Adams hasn’t met a scandal that he couldn’t avoid. This time, the cop-turned-politician is answering to questions about his decision to go on vacay just before a winter storm was set to hit the city he’s in charge of over the Christmas holiday weekend.
Apparently, while the mayor’s office didn’t let the public know his whereabouts, it turns out he was in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Reports Gothamist:
The mayor revealed his weekend whereabouts at an unrelated press conference Tuesday evening after his office hid them from the public for days. Adams stood by his decision to leave town and said he was mourning his mother during his second Christmas without her.
“After 365 days of commitment to this city, I decided to take two days to reflect on mommy. And to watch how you responded to my two days out of this city was really alarming,” the mayor told reporters after someone asked where he had been over the holiday weekend. “I deserve a good work-life balance like you do.”
Hey, everyone needs time off, right?
However, a public official essentially telling his office to cover for him doesn’t exactly lend to transparency. Nevertheless, Adams insisted he followed protocol and just wanted some time to reflect on the loss of his mother.
Adams asked for sympathy from the city press corps as he noted that, in the past year, he has dealt with killings, fires and police officers dying — all without his parents. His mother died in 2021 while he was campaigning for mayor.
“If I take time off to get my mental capacity together, so I can take the city through the crisis, I deserve those two days,” the mayor said.
Adams added that he had followed City Charter rules, which place the first deputy mayor in charge in the mayor’s absence.
Considering New York City press, it was a lose, lose situation for Mayor Adams no matter what he did.
Just saying.
