In a new interview with British Vogue, Priyanka Chopra Jonas shared she has a fear that her daughter, who’s just started eating solid foods, will choke on something when she’s eating. And if you know even a little bit about what the 40-year-old actress and husband Nick Jonas have gone through together as new parents, you’d 100% understand where she’s coming from.
Chopra got intimately real about the terrors of being a parent to a very premature new baby in the interview, recalling how she and the singer spent three months in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) after their daughter, Malti, who arrived via surrogate, was born a whole trimester early.

“I was in the [operating room] when she came out,” the actress, whose songs “Exotic” and “I Can’t Make You Love Me” charted on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs tally, recalled to the magazine. “She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive-care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed [in her tiny body] to intubate her.”

“We spent every single day with her on my chest, on my husband’s chest,” she added. “I didn’t know if she would make it or not.” 

Chopra also shared a little insight into their decision to welcome a baby via surrogate, something she and her husband have largely kept private. “I had medical complications,” she explained, calling surrogacy “a necessary step.”

“I’m so grateful I was in a position where I could do this,” she said. “Our surrogate was so generous, kind, lovely and funny, and she took care of this precious gift for us for six months.”

The couple’s decision to choose surrogacy did not escape public scrutiny, much of which involved cruel assumptions about Chopra. For instance, as reported by British Vogue, some people speculated that the Bollywood-turned-Hollywood star had deliberately passed over traditional pregnancy out of vanity.

“You don’t know me,” Chopra said when asked about how she responds to those types of remarks. “You don’t know what I’ve been through. And just because I don’t want to make my medical history — or my daughter’s — public doesn’t give you the right to make up whatever the reasons were.” 

Popping in and out throughout the interview was Jonas, who told the publication that there’s “nothing better” than fatherhood. According to Chopra, he’s the mature one in the relationship and always keeps her grounded.

“He’s a wise man beyond his years,” she said of the 30-year-old musician. “I get affirmations from him all the time, to remind me of my value when I forget or when I get insecure. He just sees through the fog for me. He sees the best in people.” 

Four days after Billboard confirmed that John Legend and Chrissy Teigen had welcomed their third child together on Friday (Jan. 13), the couple has now publicly shared details about their new baby girl — including her adorable name — for the first time.

In a sweet post on Teigen’s Instagram account, the model shared a photo of 6-year-old daughter Luna and 4-year-old son Miles holding their newborn sister, who is wrapped in a fuzzy white blanket. “She’s here!” the cookbook author captioned the photo. “Esti Maxine Stephens.”

“The house is bustling and our family could not be happier 💕,” the Cravings founder continued. “Daddy sheds nightly tears of joy seeing Luna and Miles so full of love, and I am learning you still need diapers with a c section!?”

“We are in bliss,” she added. “Thank you for all the love and well wishes – we feel it all! X”

Word that Esti had arrived first spread after Legend, performing at a private concert, told attendees that he was now a dad of three. “What a blessed day,” he reportedly said at the time, remarking that he’d spent a lot of time at the hospital and hadn’t gotten much sleep ahead of the event. Still, he said he felt “energized” after the baby’s birth.

The baby’s arrival comes just a little over two years since Teigen suffered a pregnancy loss at 20 weeks in September 2020 — a son they’d already named Jack. Last February, she shared that she had started IVF treatment in the hopes of conceiving again, and in August, she announced that she was pregnant again.

Happy new year indeed! Chrissy Teigen gave birth to her third child with husband John Legend on Friday (Jan. 13), a rep confirms to Billboard.
The singer-songwriter announced the happy news during a private concert that evening, People was first to report. “What a blessed day,” Legend told attendees, according to the publication. The 12-time Grammy winner also said that though he had spent a lot of time at the hospital and hadn’t gotten much sleep ahead of the event, he felt “energized” after the baby’s birth.

Some who attended the private performance also shared the news of the baby’s birth on Twitter. “@johnlegend just told us he had a baby this morning #congratulations,” wrote one.

The couple have not yet shared any additional details about their newborn.

The joyous arrival of Legend and Teigen’s new baby comes after the cookbook author suffered a pregnancy loss in September 2020. The model revealed at the time that they lost son Jack at 20 weeks after a pregnancy complication. She later shared more details, saying that the couple had learned Jack “would not survive,” and neither would she without medical intervention. “Let’s just call it what it was: It was an abortion,” the star said during Propper Daley’s “A Day of Unreasonable Conversation” summit in September. “An abortion to save my life for a baby that had absolutely no chance.” Teigen noted to attendees that at the time that the fact it was an abortion shocked her.

In February 2022, she shared that she was undergoing IVF treatment in order to conceive again, but asked her followers to not make comments about if she was pregnant or not.

“I honestly don’t mind the shots … they make me feel like a doctor/chemist … but the bloating is a bi—, so I humbly beg you to stop asking if I’m pregnant because while I know it’s said with excited, good intentions, it just kind of sucks to hear because I am the opposite of pregnant!” she wrote at the time.

Teigen announced her pregnancy news on Instagram in early August 2022 by sharing a series of baby bump mirror selfies. “The last few years have been a blur of emotions to say the least, but joy has filled our home and hearts again,” she captioned the post. “1 billion shots later (in the leg lately, as u can see!) we have another on the way. Every appointment I’ve said to myself, ‘ok if it’s healthy today I’ll announce’ but then I breathe a sigh of relief to hear a heartbeat and decide I’m just too nervous still. I don’t think I’ll ever walk out of an appointment with more excitement than nerves but so far, everything is perfect and beautiful and I’m feeling hopeful and amazing. Ok phew it’s been very hard keeping this in for so long!”

Legend and Teigen, who tied the knot in 2013, are parents to 5-year-old Luna and 4-year-old Miles.
