Prince Royce was honored with the Pioneer Award at 2023 Latin AMAs for helping internationalize bachata well beyond its borders.Â
The Bronx native, who appeared donning a white blazer with black baggy but classy slacks, began his performance crooning the slinky song âMe EnRD.â He was soon joined by two generational talents: Dominican bachata trailblazer ZacarĂas FerreĂra and rising Colombian artist Manuel Turizo.
The song then transitioned to the âStand By Meâ cover that made Prince Royce a star. The oldies but goodies song became an example of how music from different genres can get the bachata treatment and sound beautiful, which Royce helped do. âThis song is very special to me, the song that started it all,â said the honorary artist. Turizo helped provide a great doo-wop vocal beat, while FerreĂra lent his dolce vocals to the song. Â

âPrince, brother, in my house, in Colombia, not only in Colombia, but for all of us Latinos â and for my career â you were a great influence for me to start listening to bachata, for me to love bachata. So itâs an honor to be here with you singing this song,â Turizo told Royce as he handed him the Pioneer award.Â
Turizoâs own first-ever bachata song âLa Bachataâ (2022) peaked at No. 1 on the Tropical Airplay chart. âIâve been a big fan of the genre since I was little, and thatâs what motivated me to release a bachata,â he previously told Billboard of the hit. âItâs definitely the first song I do in this genre, but it wonât be the last one. More bachata songs will come, with the favor of God and in due time.â
âFirst of all I want to thank ZacarĂas FerreĂra and Manuel Turizo for being with me at this moment. ZacarĂas is a person who has inspired me a lot, Manuel for representing bachata in your own way,â said Royce upon receiving his award.
FerreĂra, who rose to fame in the late â90s, early â00s, was one of the first international exporters of the century-old Dominican style from the island.Â
âI started with few resources and it was difficult but I never gave up. Back then, it was just a dream. Many people said criticisms, that it was bachata lite, bachata pop â [but] it was a bachata that really reached the whole world. It became international, and to be part of that growth for me is an honor to represent my culture. It is impressive how this genre has grown a lot. I never imagined this growth,â said Royce.  Â

None other than his daughter, recording artist Ăngela Aguilar, took the stage to present the award to her father. âWhen I was a little girl, I didnât know what I wanted to be, but I knew I wanted to be like him,â she offered. âMy father has sold millions of albums, heâs a songwriter, singer, producer, entrepreneur but most of all, a great man. I have the great privilege and great pride to recognize the greatest exponent of Mexican music. The man I most admire and love the most, heâs the artist that has represented Mexico in the best way. My father, my hero, Pepe Aguilar.â
An emotional Pepe Aguilar took the stage, humbled by his daughterâs words. âThank you so much,â he began the speech. âI accept this but I donât feel like I personally deserve this because all Iâve done in life is to follow my heart and my passion, and that is Mexican music. Honestly, if itâs legacy or not, one thing I will say is that, God willing, I will continue to do what my heart tells me to do, and my heart tells me to respect my traditions, to move forward with Mexican music â which is mariachi, banda, norteña. And thatâs the legacy, more than a person, itâs the energy that represents regional Mexican music. Y viva MĂ©xico!â
His tribute continued with a special medley by Banda El Recodo, Carin Leon and RubĂ©n Blades, who sang some of Aguilarâs most well-known songs including. Leon gave âPerdĂłnameâ the norteño treatment, El Recodo got everyone dancing with the Sinaloa banda version of âSon Las Dos de la Mañanaâ and Blades gave âPor Mujeres Como TĂșâ a salsa twist. One of the best performances of the night that, deservingly, got a standing ovation.

The two hitmakers arrived onstage to perform their corridos âChanel,â with Becky rocking a rugged yet sexy denim and tank combo, while Peso had on a white leather sports jacket with hockey team logos. They trade verses like two star-crossed lovers, yet even a Chanel bag couldnât salvage their romance: âI took you to Chanel/ Also chose from Cartier/ And one day she left me/ To one day never to return,â Peso barked back against a snarling acoustic backdrop.
With a laid-back voice, or bien tumbada, and an octave deeper than usual, the Mexican-American performer sang of leaving the past behind her for brighter days ahead. âI will remember you forever in my life, baby/ And even though I know Iâll never be able to see you again/ And for that I love you, baby,â she remarks.Â
Earlier in the evening Becky G won song of the year for âMAMIIIâ alongside Karol G, and best collaboration â regional Mexican. âMy Mexican blood is everything to me, it is the blood that runs through my veins,â Becky to accept the award. âIt doesnât change the history of my last name, GĂłmez, which for me is a pride to be able to carry on every stage, on every platform, in every opportunity. So thank you to all my people in Mexico, viva MĂ©xico! And also, to all my 200 percenters out there. You are enough. And we will continue moving forward together.â
The Inglewood, Calif., star brought Pluma to the stage in Indio for weekend 1 of Coachella, where they performed âChanel.â
Peso Pluma is the first regional Mexican act to enter the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, alongside Eslabon Armado, with their song âElla Baila Sola.â This week he appears on the chart six times, an unprecedented feat for any artist of the regional genre. âChanelâ is Becky Gâs first single from an upcoming all-regional Mexican album sheâs set to release later this year, with more collaborations to be announced soon. The Chicana hitmaker is also slated to perform at weekend 2 of Coachella on Saturday.

Celebrating 20 years in music, Bisbal was praised by his good friend, and fellow superstar Olga Tañón, who presented him with the special award. âDavid, itâs incredible all youâve achieved in 20 years,â she told him. âYou brought flamenco to my home and you continue to making our lives more joyful.â
A visibly emotional Bisbal, took the stage to thank his fans, his family and the Latin AMAs for the recognition. âMadre mĂa de mi vida. I fell in love with Latin music 20 years ago thanks to great colleagues like Ricky Martin, Chayanne and Juan Luis Guerra. That allowed me to really fall in love with Latin music. When I had the chance to record my first album, I decided to fuse it with my roots, my flag. To date, I havenât stopped. And you know what? Iâm ready for the next 20 years. Vamos!â
Then came his performance, which kicked off with his new track âAjedrez,â and later transitioned into musical tribute with Tañón and Ăngela Aguilar leading the set. The former performing Bisbalâs âBulerĂaâ flamenco-fused pop anthem. Aguilar then took the stage to sing âAve MarĂa,â his hit song from 2003.

Wisin walked the 2023 Latin American Music Awards red carpet on Thursday (April 20) and he didnât hold back from telling Billboard all about his new single âMi Exxxâ in collaboration with Anuel AA.
âThanks to Anuel, Los Legendarios and DJ Luian. Thereâs a lot of people behind this project, and itâs part of the new work Iâm bringing,â he says. âThe song was born organically. I sent it to Anuel, he loved it and recorded his part. The concept is that exes shouldnât fight and they should work on things.âÂ
âMi Exxx,â a saucy reggaetĂłn track that meshes both Wisin and Anuelâs signature sounds, also marks Anuelâs return to a more commercial sound.
âWeâre seeing a great comeback and Iâm happy for him,â Wisin says of the Latin trap star. âI believe Anuel has a lot to offer to the music scene and itâs an honor to have him on this song.â

A trifecta of new powerhouse women reggaetĂłn and Latin trap artists had a huge moment at the 2023 Latin American Music Awards on Thursday night (April 20).
Bad Gyal appeared nonchalant onscreen, rocking a shimmery yellow dress and sleek blond hair as she belted out the reggaeton banger âChulo.â Amid an energetic pack of backup dancers, the Spanish provocateur dominated the stage with her cooly effortless swag.Â

The scene then transitioned to Chesca and Dalex, who donned sexy black leather to perform âEasy,â first appearing with their backs against each other. Their sensual and explosive love song chronicles how âeasyâ it is for the couple to be an item because of chemistry.
Then, Young Miko entered the scene with her exhilarating song âLisa,â which instantly amped up the vibe. Donning black leather pants and a racing-inspired shirt with hints of fuchsia, the young lyricist brought her languorous and powerful flow. The song is an unapologetic confession of weakness for the irresistible women around her, revealing her refusal to limit herself to a particular style or personality type. Meanwhile a display of rosy anime characters adorned the backdrop.Â
Young Miko is one of the most dynamic new voices of Puerto Ricoâs ever-growing reggaeton and Latin trap wave. Sheâs also one of the first openly queer musicians in her music space. The rapidly rising star traded her tattoo needle for a mic, and ever since, sheâs been bringing her potent vocal flow to the forefront of Puerto Ricoâs booming mĂșsica urbana scene. She recently signed with Capitol Records.Â

Puerto Rican stars Wisin and Anuel AA literally brought the heat to the 2023 Latin American Music Awards on Thursday night (April 20).
Surrounded by cage-like structures that were lit on fire, the reggaetoneros joined forces for their new collaboration âMi Exxxâ â a breakup song, produced by Los Legendarios, which finds both men singing about a possible reunion with an ex, even if it is for one last time.
âCollaborating with Anuel is always an honor for me, he is one of the most respected artists in the genre and being able to create good music with him is always nice because I know that people will receive it and support it as they always do with our songs,â Wisin said about the collaboration in a statement. âThis song is designed for people to listen to it, dedicate it, sing it and even dance to it. By creating it we kept our essence and I know that is one that people will enjoy.â
During the awards show, Wisin also performed âTu Recuerdoâ alongside Emilia Mernes and Lyanno.

Before kicking off the live broadcast of the eighth edition of the Latin American Music Awards on Thursday night (April 20), stars such as Becky G, Anuel AA, David Bisbal, Chiquis and Pepe Aguilar walked the red carpet. Â
Outside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Becky G â who will perform âChanelâ alongside Peso Pluma at Thursdayâs Latin AMAs â strutted the carpet in a bedazzled little black dress that she styled with a long and dramatic black cape. Meanwhile, Chiquis was pretty in pink and looking very glamorous with a short pink dress with puffy sleeves. Â
Up-and-comers Peso Pluma and Yahritza y Su Esencia opted for a more casual and youthful look, wearing cargo pants or slacks paired with blazers or a simple button-down shirt. Mexican music titan Pepe Aguilar, who is being honored with one of the Legacy Awards, walked down the red carpet with his beloved Gordo, El Pug. Â
