Kelly Clarkson took the Eagles‘ classic “Desperado” to new heights on Friday’s (Dec. 1) episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show. For her daily Kellyoke cover, Clarkson chose the title track from the band’s 1973 album, taking some creative liberties with the well-known melody and hitting some power notes much loftier than Don Henley’s original vocal. Kelly Clarkson‘s Kellyoke covers are always incredible, and — despite the title of her latest song of choice — her Thursday (April 27) performance is no exception. The three-time Grammy winner sounded absolutely stunning while passionately belting out Paramore‘s hit bittersweet love song “The Only Exception,” singing on stage with no accompaniment other than a solo acoustic guitarist.

Just like Hayley Williams does on the original track, Clarkson starts off soft and effortlessly before ramping up the intensity for the choruses and angst-filled bridge. “I’ve got a tight grip on realitybut I can’t let go of what’s in front of me right here,” she belts, hitting each high note with crystal clear resonance. “I know you’re leaving in the morning when you wake up/ Leave me with some kind of proof it’s not a dream.”
Released in 2009, “The Only Exception” holds up as one of Paramore’s biggest hitss. The soft-rock ballad peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2010 and remained on the chart for 20 weeks; it also earned the band a Grammy nod for best pop performance by a duo/group with vocals in 2011.
Williams and bandmates Taylor York and Zac Farro are currently touring in support of their first group album in nearly six years, the February-released Billboard 200 No. 2 This Is Why. The global stint included an opening slot for the first couple shows of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Glendale, Ariz.
Clarkson is also about to make a comeback of her own. She also hasn’t released a proper (non-Christmas) album since 2017, but that’s set to change when Chemistry drops June 23. Earlier this month, she released the album’s double lead singles, “Me” and “Mine,” the latter of which she performed live for the first time on Kellyoke.

Kelly Clarkson made quite the statement on Tuesday’s (April 25) episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show with her Kellyoke cover of Rag’n’Bone Man’s “Human.”
“Maybe I’m foolish/ Maybe I’m blind/ Thinking I can see through this/ And see what’s behind/ Got no way to prove it/ So maybe I’m lyin’/ But I’m only human after all/ I’m only human after all/ Don’t put your blame on me/ Don’t put your blame on me,” she growled while wearing a printed dress in shades of navy, burnt orange and maroon.
“Human” was Rag’n’Bone Man’s first hit single from his 2017 debut album of the same name. While the song gave the British singer his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 74, it was a much more substantial chart heavyweight in his native U.K., landing at No. 2 on the Official Singles Chart. (The single also became a top five hit on both Billboard‘s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs and Hot Rock Airplay charts.)
During the episode, the coach of The Voice welcomed Meghan Trainor and her husband Daryl Sabara to reveal the “Mother” singer is expecting another boy, just a couple of years after they shared the sex of their older son Riley on the show as well.
Recently, Clarkson has used her ever-popular Kellyoke segment to debut a live performance of her new single “mine” from her forthcoming 10th studio album Chemistry. Other song selections have included Coldplay’s “Magic,” Journey’s “Faithfully,” Dionne Farris’ “I Know,” Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” and more.

Kelly Clarkson dug into Taylor Swift‘s storied songbook by covering “Clean” on her eponymous talk show Wednesday (April 12).
Glammed out in a black dress and chunky studded belt with her hair up in a rare ponytail, the original American Idol winner did the beloved 1989 closer justice as she sang, “Hung my head as I lost the war/ And the sky turned black like a perfect storm/ Rain came pourin’ down/ When I was drownin’/ That’s when I could finally breathe/ And by morning/ Gone was any trace of you/ I think I am finally clean/ I think I am finally clean.”
The song choice felt particularly profound considering Clarkson’s on the verge of rolling out Chemistry, her long-awaited album following her divorce from music manager Brandon Blackstock, starting with lead single “Mine / Me” this Friday (April 14). In fact, she’s already teased a few snippets of the breakup ballad on social media with defiant lyrics such as “‘Cause I don’t need somebody to scold me/ Don’t need somebody that hurts me/ Don’t need somebody who feels weak/ Standing next to me.”
Meanwhile, Swift surprised the sold-out crowd in Arlington, Texas, by performing a piano version of “Clean” on the second night of her Eras Tour stop at AT&T Stadium on April 1. During the show, she paired the fan-favorite ballad with the equally loved “Death By a Thousand Cuts” off 2019’s Lover, leading some Swifties to wonder in hindsight if she was quietly dropping clues about her recent reported breakup with Joe Alwyn before the news became public.

With Esten on the guitar, the duo harmonized in the chorus of the ode to nostalgia, which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart dated August 3, 1985. The song, featured on Springsteen’s Born in the U.S.A., spent a total of 18 weeks on the tally.
Other songs Clarkson has recently taken on for her Kellyoke segment include Lenny Kravitz’s cover of “American Woman,” GAYLE’s Grammy-nominated breakout “abcdefu” — complete with tweaked lyrics to allude to her divorce from Brandon Blackstock — and Janet Jackson’s “When I Think of You.”
Clarkson is also gearing up to release her highly anticipated album Chemistry, her first project of original, non-holiday music since 2017’s Meaning of Life. The studio set’s lead single “Mine” is set to arrive April 14 via Atlantic Records.
