It’s been almost three years since JoJo Siwa came out as a member of the LGBTQ community — and now, she’s ready to speak candidly about the blowback she received as a result.
In the debut episode of the reality star’s new iHeartMedia-produced podcast JoJo Siwa Now, Siwa talks at length about her coming out story, reflecting on how she decided to tell her fans that she identified as queer. “I was on the phone with my girlfriend at the time, and I said ‘I think I wanna come out to the world,’” she recalled. “I posted this picture and threw it on my Instagram Story, and that’s how I confirmed it … I didn’t think twice about it.”
The reaction, she said, were largely positive — but there were still plenty of people who were not happy that Siwa was sharing her truth publicly. “There was also a lot of negativity, and I did lose a lot,” she said. “I didn’t care, and I still don’t care about the things I lost and the people that I lost and if I lost a chunk of fans, because it’s who I am.”
Further explaining her point, Siwa, 20, explained that she had built her career off of “being genuine,” and if members of her audience couldn’t deal with her sexuality, then they were welcome to leave. “If you didn’t like me because [one day] I was straight, and [the next day] I was gay, then you’re not meant to like me anyways,” she said. “I just try to really be genuine, really be who I am.”
This is not the first time Siwa has talked about backlash to her coming out — during an interview on The Viall Files back in July, the Dance Moms star said that a number of corporations decided to “blackball” her from working with them because of her sexuality. “I had a lot of people of corporations [who] told me that I made the wrong choice and that I shouldn’t have come out,” she said at the time. “[They said] that I shouldn’t tell my young demographic that I’m gay.”
Siwa is currently starring as a contestant on the second season of Fox reality series Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, in which a group of celebrities are subjected to military bootcamp-style challenges, until they decide to leave the competition.

JoJo Siwa is the proud owner of a tattoo. The Dance Moms alum revealed on Tuesday (Aug. 1) that she took the plunge and got a special number inked behind her left ear with two people in tow for support — Raven-Symoné and wife Miranda Pearman-Maday. Siwa showed off photos of her getting the tattoo […]
Time flies when you’re having fun — and for the last two years, JoJo Siwa has been having the time of her life.
On Sunday, Siwa posted on Instagram to celebrate the two-year anniversary of her public coming out announcement back in 2021. Sharing the same photo she shared two years ago, Siwa wrote a short-but-sweet caption to commemorate the moment.
“2 years ago today,” she said next to a series of rainbow-colored heart emojis. “now looking back on everything…. I’m SO proud of 17 year old JoJo.”
Siwa officially came out on Jan. 22, 2021, when she posted a photo of herself with the caption, “My cousin got me a new shirt.” The picture shows Siwa smiling and looking down at the tee, which said in blue block letters, “Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever.”
In the time since then, Siwa has used her platform to try and elevate LGBTQ voices and stand up for her community. Most recently, the former Nickelodeon star called out Fuller House star Candace Cameron Bure for saying that she would not feature same-sex couples in movies she produces at the Great American Family Network.
Speaking to People, Siwa explained why she called Bure out for her “rude and hurtful” comments. “You not liking gay marriage, do your thing girl. You being religious, do your thing girl. Of course, I would want everybody to do what they want to do,” she said. “But to purposely exclude someone because of who they love, that’s sh–ty.”

More shots fired! JoJo Siwa made quite the accusation about her recent breakup with Avery Cyrus in a new TikTok on Tuesday.
Using a viral sound taken from the “My Brother My Brother and Me” YouTube channel, the former Dance Moms star revealed what she was really trying to say onscreen. “But I love you Why are you breaking up with me??!!!” she wrote before offering up two different options: “There’s someone else” and, uh, “You told one of my best friends that you were excited to be dating me bc you’re ‘growing your career and wanna get to the top’…”
By the end of the lip-synced clip, Siwa makes it clear that the reason for her split was, well, not a third party. She also added some dramatic context in the video’s caption, writing, “And when I said I just wanted to be friends so I didn’t lead you on after an unplanned hookup you wanted nothing to do with me because there was nothing to gain anymore.”
The TikTok comes just one day after the Nickelodeon star vented about the breakup in an Instagram Story posted by her mother, Jessalynn Siwa, in which she claimed she “got used…For views and for clout” by the TikToker during their three-month relationship. “I got tricked into being told I was loved and I got f—ing played,” she added.
Though she has yet to offer an opinion on the latest TikTok, Cyrus responded to Siwa’s Instagram accusations, saying she was “saddened and confused by the situation” in a statement to E! News.

On Saturday, Cyrus took to TikTok to share scenes from her recent cruise with Royal Caribbean, which contained a major update about her relationship with the Dance Moms alum. A short clip in the video sees Siwa holding up a hot-pink egg from a game room, telling Cyrus (who is behind the camera), “This is my ‘I’m sorry for breaking up with you’ present.” No reason for the split was explained in the video, though Cyrus inserted clips of her swimming in the ocean with Siwa.
Fans in the comments were pleased to see how well the pair was handling the split, with one user writing, “Ok but I love how you guys still hung out like friends and all that while you were there! Super cool!” Another user wrote, “Me, the 1% population who is happy for you guys, together or apart! Put yourselves first, and just be happy. We’re all still young.”
The 19-year-old Siwa initially confirmed her romance with Cyrus in September by sharing a sweet video of them together. In the clip, Siwa and Cyrus were seen posing together in a photo booth, smiling before leaning in for a kiss. “Happiest girl,” the dancer captioned the post.

It’s not even officially Halloween weekend yet, and JoJo Siwa is already winning in the costume category.
The 19-year-old star took to TikTok on Tuesday (Oct. 24) to show off her transformation into Draco Malfoy from the Harry Potter series, portrayed in the films by Tom Felton. With her platinum blonde hair and her Slytherin robe, Siwa bears a striking resemblance to the beloved character.
In her video, the Nickelodeon alum recreated a scene from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, in which Felton’s Draco introduces himself and his friends to Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe). “This is Crabbe, and Goyle,” Siwa lip syncs in her costume. “And I’m Malfoy. Draco Malfoy.”

Siwa’s girlfriend, fellow TikTok star Avery Cyrus, even shared her thoughts in the comments section, sweetly chiming in, “All the sudden I have a crush on Draco Malfoy.”
Siwa and Cyrus confirmed their relationship after weeks of speculation, when the Dance Moms star posted a video of the two posing together in a photo booth, smiling before they lean in for a kiss. “Happiest girl,” the dancer captioned the post.
In 2021, Siwa officially came out on social media. “I never wanted [my coming out] to be a big deal,” she said in an interview with People a few months later. “I’ve never gotten this much support from the world. I think this is the first time that I’ve felt so personally happy.”
“I still don’t know what I am. It’s, like, I want to figure it out … I don’t know — bisexual, pansexual, queer, lesbian, gay, straight. I always just say ‘gay’ because it just kind of covers it, or ‘queer’ because I think the keyword is cool,” she said before adding that she’s considered labeling herself pansexual.
JoJo Siwa has officially moved on from her back-and-forth with Fuller House actress Candace Cameron Bure — not because of a reconciliation, but because enough time has passed to let bygones be bygones.

Speaking with E! News this week, the Dance Moms alum gave some clarity on her status with Bure.
“I’ll be honest,” Siwa told the outlet. “I haven’t spoken to her at all since the whole thing. I think she’s alive and thriving. I think I’m alive and thriving.”
In fact, the 19-year-old says she’s been embroiled in a few other issues that have allowed her to move past the drama. “We’re…civil? I don’t know … I’ve got like three problems since that one, so we’re moved on.”
Siwa and Bure’s feud started in July when Siwa revealed that Bure was the rudest celebrity she ever met in a TikTok challenge video. After Siwa’s comments went viral, Bure explained her actions in a video posted to Instagram, blaming the chaos of the red carpet for not taking a photo with a then-11-year-old Siwa.
In the video, Bure also told her followers that she and Siwa talked through their issues on the phone, but on July 28, Siwa spoke to Page Six and claimed Bure “didn’t share all of the details of the meeting.” She added, “It was at the afterparty that she didn’t wanna take a picture with me, and I was OK with that. But then I turned around, and when I looked back, she was taking pictures with other kids.”
Despite Siwa calling the actress out for not including certain details on social media, she did note that Bure apologized to her. “It was sweet,” she told Page Six of their phone call. “She apologized and we talked and it was cool.”
