Joey Bada$$
Red Bull Spiral, the innovative Hip-Hop series from Red Bull 1520, is back for a third season and is kicking things off with three lyrical heavyweights. Big Sean, Joey BadA$$, and Ab-Soul all hopped into the Red Bull Spiral cypher with their unique, face-melting bars.
Opening up the Red Bull Spiral is Big Sean, with the Detroit wordsmith sounding comfortable over the head-nodding production behind him with some assistance from Joey BadA$$ and Ab-Soul. After Sean Don playfully says that Ab-Soul’s lady told him that he was going to “wash” him in the cypher, the Black Lip Pastor returns the jab but delivers another one of his amazing displays of lyricism as only the Martin Luther King of Carson can. In his verse, Soul-O also shouts out BadA$$’s Pro Era set but still flies the TDE flag high.
On the anchor, the Brooklyn Bad Mon Joey BadA$$ ripped a hole in the multiverse with his bars and backed up all the tough talk he delivered over his blistering “The Ruler’s Back” track, expertly saluting Ab-Soul’s hometown and shouting out Sean. The synergy between the trio makes it appear as if they were an actual group, but this is the first time the three stars have appeared on a track of this sort. And if there was any doubt about Joey’s love for the West Coast, it was squashed amicably at the end of his set.

Joey BadA$$ and Capital STEEZ, along with Powers Pleasant, were considered the vanguard of the sprawling Pro Era collective, comprised of several teenage wunderkinds that placed their stamp in underground Hip-Hop circles. Nyck Caution, a member of Pro Era, shared a snippet of a track recorded by Joey BadA$$ and Capital STEEZ on his Instagram page, showing just how far ahead they were as lyricists even at their relatively young ages.
Nyck Caution shared a track with a presumed working title of “gwood.mp3” that featured himself, Joey BadA$$, and Capital STEEZ going back and forth over a mid-tempo beat while rapping in a style that was certainly inspired by an earlier time in Hip-Hop.
“[W]as going through old music remembering disguise the limit and Found this old gem circa 2010 with Joey and Steez lmao wanted y’all to peep,” Caution wrote in the caption of the post.
Capital STEEZ passed away on December 23, 2012, after jumping off the roof of a Manhattan building. He was just 19. Joey BadA$$ has honored his colleague and friend several times in his music and has carried the torch along with other members of Pro Era and the larger Beast Coast collective that includes The Underachievers duo and the Flatbush Zombies trio.

While everyone was spreading joy and well wishes on Christmas, Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ was dealing out knuckle sandwiches, as he got into a scuffle at a clothing store in New York City.
According to XXL, the “Fallin’” rapper got into some fisticuffs this past Monday (Dec. 23), with an unknown man. It was all captured on a surveillance camera and ultimately leaked for public consumption. While no one knows exactly what led to the incident, the footage captures Joey Bada$$ in a very animated face-to-face confrontation with a man at the retail store before the two began to throw hands near the store’s exit door.
While others attempted to break up the fight, Joey was having none of that and continued to dish out some haymakers before ultimately walking away.
Per XXL:
The skirmish comes two days after Joey received a proclamation from New York Mayor Eric Adams naming Dec. 20 Joey Bada$$ Day. This honor coincides with the second-anniversary celebration of his ImpactMENtorship Program. The same day, Joey joined the New York City Department of Youth & Community Development for their second annual Hip Hop Holiday Giveaway.
Joey recently completed his first artist residency at the Clive Davis Institute at NYU Tisch and was announced as the inaugural artist scholar in residence at Columbia University’s Teachers College Gordon Institute.
XXL has reached out for comment to Joey’s camp but have yet to hear back from them.
