This makes RAYE the most nominated artist in a single year since the Brits began in 1977. She eclipses the record of six nods jointly held by Gorillaz (2002), Craig David (2001) and Robbie Williams (1999).
“I am completely floored to be recognized seven times this year,” RAYE said in a statement. “I was a BRIT school student and I remember how deeply I dreamed of one day being recognized at the BRITs. I am currently a mess of overwhelming emotions and confusion as to how this even happened, to be honest.”
“From the moment RAYE joined the Human Re Sources roster, we believed that she had the music and vision of a generational talent,” Julius Erving III, the label’s founder and CEO said in a statement. “It’s exciting to see the voters and fans respond with such acclaim to the music and art RAYE has been creating and sharing.”
RAYE, 26, achieved global success with “Escapism.” The collab reached No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her album My 21st Century Blues reached No. 58 on the Billboard 200.
Central Cee and J Hus each received four nods. Dua Lipa received three – artist of the year, pop act and song of the year with Mastercard. In addition, Lipa, who has won six Brits, is the first artist confirmed to perform on the Brits on March 2. The superstar last performed on the show in 2021. Lipa was also one of the first three artists confirmed to perform on the Grammys on Feb. 4.
2024 also sees the first Brit nomination for The Rolling Stones in more than a decade. The legendary band is nominated for alternative/rock act. The Stones were nominated four times previously in 1977, 1995, 1996 and 2013.
For 2024, The Brits increased the number of nominees for both artist of the year and international artist of the year from five to 10, a change aimed at improving representation and inclusion. More than half (55%) of the 2024 Brits nominations feature women – either as a solo artist or as part of an all-woman group. This figure rises to 57% when including women in mixed-gender groups.
The British pop/R&B act category was split in two this year — British pop act and British R&B act. Winners in both categories, as well as the three other genre categories – alternative/rock, dance and hip-hop/grime/rap – will be decided by a public vote via Instagram. (Nominees were decided by the Brits’ “voting academy.”) Voting will open on Thursday, Feb. 1, at noon, and close on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 6 p.m.
The Brits have a whopping 15 nominations in two categories – song of the year and international song of the years, which surpasses even the Oscars (10 nominees for best picture) and the Grammys (eight nominees in each of their Big Four categories – album, record and song of the year plus best new artist).
In December, The Brits announced The Last Dinner Party as the winner of the 2024 Rising Star award.
The winners of songwriter of the year and producer of the year will be revealed over the coming weeks.
The awards are scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 2, at The 02 Arena in London. This will mark the second year in a row that the show has been held on a weekend. The show will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX.

Last week, Luminate put out its 2023 year-end report. While the data company, which tabulates Billboard‘s charts and provides data for the film and TV industries, usually puts out a separate Canadian report, this year’s was instead a report on the global music industry as a whole.
Billboard Canada asked Luminate if it could supply any more data on who and what was hot in Canada in 2023, and they dug in for four more exclusive lists.
When it comes to vinyl sales, Taylor Swift, unsurprisingly, takes up the top three spots and four of the top 10.

CIMA Calls On Government To Keep Its Canada Music Fund Promise
CIMA, the Canadian Independent Music Association, has launched a campaign calling on the public to contact Liberal representatives about the Canada Music Fund. Following a direct appeal to the government last fall, CIMA has turned towards the public in hopes of putting pressure on the government to make good on their campaign promise to increase the fund by $50 million.
The organization has set up a letter campaign that allows supporters to contact the government with a plea to increase the Canada Music Fund, which supports the operations of granting bodies FACTOR and Musicaction. According to CIMA, FACTOR invested $21 million in the Canadian music industry in 2022 alone and has supported 6,500 artists in the last five years.
FACTOR receives part of its funding from private radio broadcasters, but those contributions have been decreasing, with CIMA estimating they could be as low as $2 million in 2024. The Canada Music Fund is currently $25 million annually, and CIMA says that a $50 million increase is needed just to maintain current programming, while many music associations are calling for a $60 million increase. The Liberal government promised a $50 million increase in 2021 to help the Canada Music Fund keep up with demand and the rising costs of releasing and touring music.
CIMA president Andrew Cash spoke to the House Finance Committee on Nov. 14 about the increase and said that if the government fails to follow through, “companies will close, those that don’t will shed staff and release fewer artists, and this will result in fewer shows across the country, harming an already precarious live music sector, affecting local economies, and reducing revenues to government.”
FACTOR provides major financial support for artists looking to export their music internationally, with showcasing and touring grants that help artists travel to key industry events abroad, as well as support for marketing and sound recording.
“If the government does not make good even on their $50 million promise to our sector, FACTOR’s budget could be cut in half over the next couple of years,” states CIMA’s new public campaign. – Rosie Long Decter
Amazon Music Canada Announces Breakthrough Artists to Watch 2024
Amazon Music Canada has announced the six Canadian rising stars included in its Breakthrough Artists to Watch 2024. Throughout the year, these six musicians will include support from Amazon Music Canada, including year-long promotion, exclusive music, playlist placement, editorial and tailored developmental support for each artist’s career ambitions.
This year’s selections include inaugural Billboard Canada Punjabi Wave cover star Jonita Gandhi, francophone rapper Fredz, small-town Ontario country singer Owen Riegling, former breakout star of Canadian singing competition The Launch Jamie Fine, Ottawa singer-songwriter Anaïs Cardot and Victoria, British Columbia-based funk/R&B artist Diamond Cafe (who also just signed a major label deal with Warner Music Canada).
“The focus of Artist to Watch is to help artists who are bubbling up in Canada find ways to grow their audiences and connect with new fans across the country and globally,” John Murphy, head of music, Canada, at Amazon Music, tells Billboard Canada. “We’re looking forward to working closely with this year’s group of diverse, promising artists and helping even more fans discover them and their music.”
One of the goals of the program is to spread regional artists internationally, adds Murphy. Amazon Music launched its first Canadian edition of the initiative last year, and Murphy says it more than doubled the total fans of each artist throughout 2023. Madeline Merlo launched an original track on the streaming service called “You’ll Think of Me,” and more than 50% of its streams have come from outside of Canada.
All six of the artists selected have big plans for 2024, including new music, concerts and some other dreams. To let them speak for themselves, Billboard Canada asked each musician about their year ahead.

LONDON — European regulators are calling for sweeping new laws to help fix the “imbalance in revenue allocation” from music streaming and deliver higher rates of pay for artists and songwriters.
On Wednesday (Jan. 17), Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) voted overwhelmingly in favor of new legislation being drawn up to ensure creators are fairly compensated from music streaming with 532 votes for, 61 against and 33 abstentions.
The resolution is non-binding, meaning there’s no legal requirement for its recommendations to come into force, but the report’s endorsement by MEPs puts pressure on policy makers to address long-held complaints from musicians about low returns from streaming. The adopted text now passes to the European Commission for consideration.
“The Parliament is giving voice to the concerns of European creators, who are at the heart of the music streaming market,” MEP and rapporteur Ibán García Del Blanco said following Wednesday’s vote. Ensuring that authors are “credited and fairly paid has always been our priority,” he said.
The EU proposals state that current “pre-digital royalty rates” must be brought in line with “modern rates” and call on the industry to explore “fairer models of streaming revenue allocation” for artists and creators, including pro-rata and user-centric models “or totally new ones.”
The current global streaming model pioneered and dominated by Spotify, Apple, YouTube and Amazon Music leaves a majority of authors and performers with very low rates of pay and often means they are unable to sustain careers in music, say MEPs.
Over the past year, the standard pro-rata streaming model has been a major topic of consideration throughout the industry, leading to several of the leading streaming platforms to trial alternative models.
In September, Deezer announced that it was piloting a new “artist-centric” system in France in partnership with Universal Music Group that rewards artists and songs that actively driving listener engagement.
A few months later, Spotify announced that it too was looking to introduce changes to its streaming royalty model, including a new listening threshold that tracks must reach in order to qualify for royalties and a targeted clamp down on streaming fraud.
The EU report — titled “Cultural diversity and the conditions for authors in the European music streaming market” — does not reference those industry-led reforms. Instead, it calls on all stakeholders in the music business to take “all necessary steps” to overcome the current imbalances in the allocation of streaming royalties.
The report also strongly condemns the use of so-called payola schemes that force artists to accept lower royalty rates — or forgo them entirely — in exchange for greater visibility on streaming platforms.
One of its other key recommendations is that the EU takes action to protect the long-term prominence of European musical works on global streaming platforms by taking “concrete measures,” including the possibility of introducing quotas for European songs or artists.
Details on what form these quotas would take or how they would be implemented are not specified in the text, although quotas already exist in many European countries for domestic content broadcast on national radio and television stations.
“EU legislation should include diversity indicators to assess the array of genres and languages available and the presence of independent authors,” say MEPs, noting that the majority of streaming revenues go to major labels and big global stars, while less popular styles and less common languages are streamed less frequently.
On the subject of transparency and artificial intelligence (AI), the report says platforms should be obliged to make their algorithms and recommendation tools transparent to prevent unfair practice, such as the manipulation of streaming numbers.
In line with the terms outlined in the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act — which was provisionally passed in December and forms the world’s first comprehensive set of laws regulating the use of AI — MEPs said music works generated by AI must be clearly labelled as such and unauthorized use of an artist’s voice or likeness banned.
Responding to the EU report, Helen Smith, executive chair of European independent labels trade body IMPALA, representing almost 6,000 music companies, said its adoption by MEPs “comes at a decisive time for the music sector.”
“The idea that artists should receive a fair contemporary digital rate reflects the independent sector commitment made almost ten years ago,” she said in a statement.
John Phelan, director general of international music publishing trade association ICMP, thanked rapporteur Ibán García Del Blanco for his “diligence and determination” in defending artists’ rights, while Jess Partridge, executive director of European Music Managers Alliance (EMMA) said the report “underlines the barriers faced by artists and their teams.”
“The music streaming market needs to properly reward those who are at the core of its success,” echoed Véronique Desbrosses, general manager of European Authors Society GESAC. “We count on the European Commission to take the next step and table the needed legislative proposals.”
Megan Thee Stallion, drag entertainer Aquaria and Japanese singer/songwriter LiSA are among the presenters set for the 2024 Anime Awards, which honors the craft and artistry of Japanese animation. The awards, to be hosted by voice actress Sally Amaki and entertainer Jon Kabira, will be presented on March 2 at the Grand Prince Hotel Shin Takanawa in Tokyo.
“Watching anime is one of my favorite things to do!,” Megan Thee Stallion said in a statement. “I love cosplaying all of my favorite characters, I love the storytelling, and I love getting inspiration from the different anime art styles! I’m really excited for the opportunity to attend and present an award at this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards. I’m looking forward to traveling to Tokyo and joining my fellow anime lovers as we celebrate and honor the best anime creators and shows in the world.”
LiSA, who has performed a number of hit anime theme songs, added: “Beyond time and borders, anime allows us to connect and be touched, be excited, and share the same emotions with others, regardless of age or values. Anime has the same potential and appeals that I feel towards music. I hope the wonderful Japanese anime continues to bring joy to many fans around the world. I consider anime to be one of the cultures that represents Japan, so I am very honored to be chosen as the presenter.”
Aquaria, American fashion model, drag entertainer and DJ who was crowned the winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race season 10, is also set to present. Aquaria is likewise a long-time anime enthusiast.
Other presenters set for the Anime Awards live ceremony or the Anime Awards pre-show include actress Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel and The Marvels), Japanese night club host and TV personality Roland, British rapper Che Lingo, content creator Lena Lemon, artist and producer Yaeji and singer Ylona Garcia.

This year, Billboard Canada will introduce the first Canadian edition of Power Players. The list will celebrate individuals pivotal in advancing Canadian music and boosting artists who are making a global impact.
Billboard Canada’s Power Players celebration will take place on Sunday, June 2, 2024, with an event held on the opening night of the long-running music festival and industry conference, Canadian Music Week (CMW).
CMW founder Neill Dixon says he noticed a void within the music industry and was looking for a method to spotlight key industry professionals. In its 42-year history, CMW has established itself as the central hub for industry professionals from Canada and across the globe. The introduction of Billboard Canada‘s Power Players list is set to provide a significant boost, propelling these industry voices to new heights.
“[It’s] a recognition long overdue for Canada,” says Dixon.
Canada’s music industry is in a pivotal moment of transformation. Following the breakout success of artists like Drake, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes over the last decade and a half, a new generation of emerging artists is making its mark on the world stage.

Luminate 2023 Year-End Report Reveals Canadians Love Old Music, Afrobeats and Country
In 2023, Canadian total album consumption was up, while album sales — including physical and digital — declined slightly, according to the Luminate Year-End Music Report released this week.
While Luminate usually releases a separate Canadian report, this year the country’s data is included with the full global report.
In Canada, catalog sales are strong. Luminate compared growth in catalog consumption versus current release consumption, and found that in Canada, catalog represented 73.1% of music consumption while current releases represented only 26.9%. Catalog consumption also grew more than current release consumption last year, at 17.4% versus 9.1%.
Canada came in ninth place on Luminate’s list of the top 10 countries by streaming volume, with 145.3 billion streams. Canada doesn’t appear on the top 10 countries by streaming growth list, however, where India took the number one spot. Canada is also one of five countries outside the United States where hip-hop and R&B perform the best on streaming.
In Canada, Afrobeats had a big year thanks to Rema and Selena Gomez‘s “Calm Down,” (which finished second on Luminate’s list of top 10 songs of 2023 in Canada by audio- and video-on-demand streams) but Latin music has struggled to break through in the same way as it has in the United States, with 2023 heavy-hitters Peso Pluma and Karol G failing to land on Canada’s year-end charts. Country is very popular, though: Morgan Wallen is on Canada’s top 10 albums of 2023 by total equivalent album units, finishing at No. 1 with One Thing at a Time and at No. 4 with Dangerous: The Double Album. Further down the list is Luke Combs’ Gettin’ Old at No. 9.

Rêve Finds Some “Contemporary Love” on the Billboard Canadian Hot 100
This week marks the first Billboard Canadian Hot 100 since the holidays, and with the drop-off of seasonal songs, there’s lots of room for shakeups on the charts. The opening has certainly benefitted Montreal dance-pop artist Rêve, who has a new entry on the charts this week: Her new song, “Contemporary Love,” lands at No. 77.
This isn’t Rêve’s first Canadian Hot 100 appearance; her single “Whitney” finished at No. 68 on 2023’s year-end Canadian Hot 100 and cracked the top 10 on Billboard‘s Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart in the United States. A previous single, “CTRL + ALT + DEL,” peaked at No. 38 on the Canadian Hot 100 and was certified platinum. In 2023, Rêve released her full-length debut, Saturn Return, and was featured in Billboard‘s Dance Artist of the Month series. She also picked up a Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist.
“Contemporary Love,” a cut off Saturn Return, was released along with a music video in July. The track is now picking up steam following Rêve’s guest judge appearance on Canada’s Drag Race at the end of 2023, where she gave pointers to the competitors on a girl group challenge. The energetic dance-pop track, featuring very ’80s synth bass and drum fills as well as a rapid-fire chorus, has an intensity that could propel it even further up the chart.
Also making moves on the Canadian Hot 100 this week is Tate McRae, who returns to No. 1 with “greedy” following a holiday hiatus. The Calgary pop star is also blowing up in the United States, having just claimed the No. 3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, behind Jack Harlow‘s “Lovin On Me” and Taylor Swift‘s “Cruel Summer.” Might she have enough momentum to take the No. 1 spot in the coming weeks?
Notably, McRae currently has two other songs on the Canadian Hot 100: “exes” at No. 19 and “run for the hills,” which hit a new peak at No. 34. Both are also charting on the U.S. Hot 100. – Rosie Long Decter
LONDON — Less than three months after installing a new CEO, Utopia Music has once again reshuffled its executive ranks, appointing Michael Stebler to lead the Swiss-based company. Stebler, who represents the majority shareholder group behind Utopia Music, succeeds Alain Couttolenc, who has been in the top post since October.
Couttolenc switches to deputy CEO and chief commercial officer, while Drew Hill, who runs Utopia’s U.K.-based physical distribution businesses Utopia Distribution Services and Proper Music Group, has also been named deputy CEO in addition to his ongoing role as chief of distribution.
Pedro Lima, a former Swiss-based executive at global data and analytics company NielsenIQ, joins the firm as chief operating officer.
All appointments are effective immediately and were communicated to Utopia staff in an internal memo sent by the board of directors on Thursday (Jan. 11).

Speaking exclusively to Billboard, Stebler says his extensive experience in the banking and financial industry will bring stability to the troubled firm and help steer it towards growth.
“We believe that the combination of Utopia’s strategy, our network and our financial support will bring the company to the next level,” he says.
Stebler’s appointment as CEO is his first executive post with Utopia, although he has held close ties with the company for several years through his role as managing director of Investment Advisors Zug AG, which operates on behalf of the majority shareholder group. Like Utopia Music, Investment Advisors Zug AG is headquartered in the scenic Swiss town of Zug, located close to Zurich.
Financial details around the size of investment or identities of investors are confidential says Stebler, but he does confirm that the investor group he heads recently increased its shareholding through a successful Series C funding round. Billboard understands that the investor group led by Strebler covered between 40-60% of the first tranche. A second tranche of C-round funding is underway.
The funds will be used to drive commercial growth, enhance product development and strengthen the company’s balance sheet, says the newly appointed CEO, who steps down from his role with Investment Advisors with immediate effect to focus on Utopia..
“We decided to invest further money into the company and we want to have control in the execution,” says Stebler, adding that “intense due diligence” was carried out by the group before increasing their investment.
“What we saw is a really strong backbone, a strong product and service offering, and great USP with the distribution business in the U.K.,” he says. “Otherwise we would have never made a further commitment and gone into a management position.”
FROM RAPID GROWTH TO SNAP DOWNSIZING
Utopia’s latest structural reorganization comes on the back of a highly turbulent few years for the tech company, which delivers financial services for labels, publishers and distributors and first made waves in the music industry by embarking on a frenetic buying spree of 15 companies between 2020 and 2022, including Lyric Financial, a Nashville-based provider of royalty-backed cash advances; and Proper Music Group, the United Kingdom’s leading independent physical music distributor.
Utopia’s period of rapid hyper-growth was followed by a just-as-quick downsizing, beginning with the axing of around 230 jobs in late 2022. More layoffs followed soon after, along with multiple executive departures, office closures, legal action over a stalled acquisition deal, late payments to staff, and the offloading of three of its businesses — Absolute Label Services, U.S.-based music database platform ROSTR and U.K.-based publisher Sentric.
As a result of those divestments and cost-cutting measures, the firm’s global workforce has been trimmed from approximately 1,200 staff to around 440.
“Today, we are in a much better position,” says Utopia co-founder and executive chairman Mattias Hjelmstedt. He says yearly cash burn has been reduced by 84 million Euros as a result of the changes and calls the new injection of C-round funding into the business “paramount” to getting Utopia on a stable footing.
Going forward, Hjelmstedt and Stebler say there are currently no plans to sell any of Utopia’s remaining businesses or to make further staff layoffs, but say that the firm will continue to evolve and finetune its offering to clients across the music industry.
“We believe that we are able to grow with our [current] head count and achieve profitability by mid or end of 2025,” says Stebler. “From an investor perspective, we prefer to invest more in substantial growth instead of cutting costs.”
One way that Utopia will look to do that is by rolling out its advance finance service, which provides music labels and clients with cash advances, to international markets, including the U.S., Continental Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
The company’s executive team is also looking to grow its core tech offering to clients across the music business. Those product services include cross-platform analytics, an AI-powered recommendation engine targeted at DSPs and streaming services, and Utopia’s royalty processing and payments system, TrackNClaim, which tracks music consumption on digital platforms and helps identify conflicts and unclaimed mechanical royalties.
THE PATH TO PROFITABILITY
Utopia’s other core businesses include its two U.K.-based physical music distribution entities: Proper Music Group, which provides distribution services for over 5,800 indie labels and service companies, and Utopia Distribution Services (formerly Cinram Novum), whose clients include Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment and [PIAS].
According to its most recent accounts, Proper Music Group recorded revenue of £30.1 million ($38 million) for the nine-month period ending Dec. 31, down from £42 million ($53 million) in the prior 12-month accounting period, and a £1.9 million ($2.4 million) net loss in 2022. The company said lower sales and increased operating costs were behind the disappointing figures, while accounts for Utopia Distribution Services are yet to be filed in the U.K.
Deputy CEO Drew Hill, a long serving veteran of the U.K. physical distribution industry, says Proper is on track to return to profitability in 2024 as a result of significant investments Utopia has made in the sector.
They include last year’s opening of the U.K.’s biggest distribution warehouse for physical music and home entertainment — a 25,000-square meter facility in the town of Bicester with handling capacity of up to 250,000 units per day — as part of a £100 million ($125 million) long-term deal with international logistics company DP World.
“With the new facility we’ve been able to show all of our labels and clients just what Utopia can do,” says Hill. “From here, we can concentrate on selling Utopia’s services and products to our existing client base, which was always the plan, and use Proper and Utopia Distribution Services as funnel to those people. We’ve shown what we can do, built some amazing relationships. Now people are going to see what the true Utopia product is.”
At present, Proper and UDS generate the bulk of Utopia’s revenue but Strebler is confident that the structure is in place to help grow the firm’s other income streams so that it moves closer towards a 50/50 split between physical distribution and tech/financial services.
He declines to discuss revenues, but confirms Utopia’s two biggest markets are the U.K. and U.S. (Last year, Hjelmstedt told Billboard the firm generates over €100 million [$110 million] in global revenue a year, but this was prior to it offloading Sentric and Absolute.) The company says it nis focused on strengthening its balance sheet and is currently working through its outstanding debt and tax obligations.
“We have never been about disrupting or taking over the industry,” says Hjelmstedt. “It’s always been about helping the industry be better and grow. And the more that we have been able to talk to the different parts of the industry, and the more that they are now trusting us to solve those problems, the more likely we are to succeed with that mission.”
It’s been an action-packed year for Amir Eid, the lead singer of the groundbreaking Arabic rock-pop band Cairokee, who just released several tracks off his debut solo album, which came in parallel with season two of the hit show, RIVO. Created by Mohamed Nayer and directed by Yahya Ismail, the show premiered on Watch It, starring Amir Eid as Shady, the lead member of a fictional indie band shrouded in mystery.

Much like Cairokee’s journey to success, and particularly that of lead singer Amir Eid, RIVO depicts the arduous road of a band determined to change the musical landscape in which it exists. We hear this all packed into RIVO’s brilliant soundtrack. Meanwhile, the deep nostalgia for the glory days of the ‘90s was perhaps another factor behind RIVO’s mass appeal.
Amir says the idea for RIVO began with his friend, script writer Mohamed Nayer, who kept trying to sell him the character of Shady for years. For the Cairokee lead singer, the decision to embark on this new experience was not an easy choice to make.
“[Mohamed] would always tell me: ‘You will play the role of Shady,’ and I would respond by saying: ‘My son, I do not want to act,’” Amir explains. But it seems that seven years of preparation were enough for Amir to change his mind. “I met Nayer by chance, and he told me you have to read this script,” he recalls. “I read the script and loved it, because it had a band and music and ‘90s and playing, so honestly, I fell in love with the role, and wanted to go through with it.”
In terms of the music, Amir manages to yet again deliver a set of songs that exhibit his resonant ability to blend alternative rock and pop, with his self-contained style of songwriting — in this case, songs that are at the heart of both Shady’s life and Amir’s career. Four tracks were enough to leave the audience with a sonic token from the show, as heard in “Tayer” (“Flying”), where the mood is immediately set by means of a bemoaning guitar line and delicate drum pattern that gives space for Eid’s vocals.
Later in “Wahshteny” (“I miss you”), Amir’s pop sensibilities and musical storytelling come in with an upbeat production juxtaposed against lyrics of an untimely love. “Lw Kan” (“If Only”), in collaboration with producer Sary Hany, offers the fullest sound, while in “Metkatef” (“Tied Up”), the keys and trumpet-driven track delivers a melancholia cushioned by rich instrumentation. In the track, we hear Amir in his most controlled vocal delivery situated within the tragic closing scene of RIVO‘s series finale.
The show weaves the music into its narrative to convey meaningful messages and ignite conversations about mental health. Within its script, the series spotlights issues like depression, a dialogue that Amir aspires will resonate profoundly with the audience.
Amir says that his approach to crafting music content for RIVO is a complete departure from his usual songwriting process for Cairokee — in this case, a largely solo driven process, but also conceived for an entirely different time period. The songs he writes for RIVO are based on a script set in the 1990s, whereas his songs for his band Cairokee are born out of pure imagination.
“First thing I do is I read the scenario really well,” he says. “Then I put it aside and go about my life normally, as we do tours and a lot of concerts, so I think, ‘What would Shady do in this situation? If he was to sing, how would he sing? If he was to write, how would he write?’ So the idea gets refined in my head, so I go back to the scenario and start working on Shady’s songs and character in the second season of RIVO.”
Looking back, a blending of Western rock and Egyptian folk music is carved in Amir’s memories of his childhood and teenage years — a fusion that would eventually shape his own music to a great extent. When revisiting this period of his life, Amir, a huge fan of the Rolling Stones, often remembers his Beatles-loving older brother. To justify his own preference, Amir says he liked the Stones’ rebellious nature and signature look.
“I would love for Cairokee to keep performing when its members are 60 or 70, touring and writing songs and living this life regardless of their age. It goes beyond just looks and fashion style – it’s that forever-young attitude that I admire most in the Stones.”
Since their debut self-titled album in 2009, the band has released eight albums, with songs that continue to find a home on the Billboard Arabia newly launched Hot 100 chart. Amir also landed a spot in Billboard Arabia’s Top 100 Artists with his solo work, while closing out the year with two epic performances with Cairokee: MDLBEAST’s Soundstorm in Riyadh, followed by their show in Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival.
Through Amir’s musical journey, the timeless essence of rock and the resonance of his songwriting continue to permeate his melodies. Be it in his solo work or the rich portfolio he’s created with Cairokee, Amir maintains his ability to create music that speaks to the human experience, with songs that are helping to shape the new sound of Arabic pop.

Since childhood, Mishaal has been driven by making the impossible possible. When he was nine years old, Mishaal broke his arm, suffering nerve damage that would have left him handicapped had he not found the guitar. Powered by his dreams, he used the instrument as part of this physical therapy, which eventually built the foundation for his songwriting and artistry.
In 2016, Saudi Arabia saw a major turning point with the announcement of the 2030 vision, with music, art and entertainment at the forefront. During this transformative period, Mishaal emerged onto the scene, establishing his presence through his first Instagram post with a self-reflective, somber guitar clip of “Can’t Love Myself.” Producer Monty Datta later found the track, sampled and released it, propelling the track to amass almost upwards of a billion views across platforms.
2019 witnessed Mishaal’s evolution as an artist with the release of his debut music video for “Arabian Knights.” Filmed in his hometown of Jeddah, Mishaal kicked off the trilingual trend by singing in Spanish, Arabic and English, cushioned within a Spanish strummed guitar and a lo-fi beat.
Afterwards, Mishaal went on to release an outpouring of singles, culminating with his debut EP, Life’s a Ride, in 2020 through RCA Records. Driven by indie-pop and genre-bending aesthetics, heard chiefly in tracks like “Friends,” Mishaal found his voice and self-contained style of songwriting.
In this behind-the-scenes video, Mishaal explains to Billboard Arabia what it means to be a songwriter from Saudi Arabia on the brink of global stardom and the importance of dreaming big. On the tour, Mishaal also teased several singles from his forthcoming album, Home is Changing, a double entendre for undeniable progress happening in the Kingdom, but also deep within the artist. The album consists of five EPs that collectively tell a story of transformation and personal growth. Thus far, the lead singles include the self-reflective “Superman,” followed by “Disco Cowboy,” a blending of post-punk guitar lines, momentous drums and anthemic lyrics.
This notion of change is ever present in Mishaal’s work, particularly when looking at his early work and the evolution of his songwriting leading up to getting signed by Empire, and Home is Changing. It is perhaps out of his ability to embrace change that the young artist continues to rise. For example, in the process of receiving his visa in the United States, Mishaal spent many nights sleeping under a table in a recording studio in New York, unable to return home to Saudi during COVID, and instead writing through his homesickness. The outcome was a body of work that continues to flourish.
In the summer of 2023, Mishaal joined OneRepublic as the opening act on their multi-city tour across Europe, and in this video, he takes Billboard Arabia behind the scenes and through the many milestones reached along the way. The tour came after singing with Empire and co-headlining the 2022 iteration of MDLBEAST’s SoundStorm in Riyadh alongside stars like Bruno Mars, DJ Snake, Post Malone, David Guetta and more.
Building off the momentum of the tour, OneRepublic teamed up again with Mishaal in a partnership between Interscope and Ubisoft to release the track “Mirage” for the video game Assassin’s Creed Mirage. “To be featured on a song with my musical heroes, OneRepublic, that soundtracks my favorite video game, is a dream come true,” says Mishaal Tamer.
The song dropped in the lead up to the game’s release, with the lyrics co-written by Ryan Tedder, and a feature by Mishaal singing in Arabic, where both verses take inspiration from the video game. A week later, Mishaal dropped another single, “Painful Paradise,” paired with a music video made of footage from the tour with OneRepublic.
Last December, OneRepublic announced a Dubai stop on its Artificial Paradise world tour on Jan. 25, with Mishaal Tamer set to open up the stage with tracks from his new EP, The Deep. In his rapid rise to the global stage, Mishaal’s trilingual prowess and genre-blending continue to push the boundaries of indie-pop, where his lyrics echo personal and cultural growth, while his collaboration with OneRepublic heralds a new era for the artist and musicians from Saudi Arabia.

LONDON — Paid-for streaming revenues grew to a record high of £1.86 billion ($2.4 billion) in the United Kingdom last year, helping drive a 9.6% rise in overall music spending, according to year-end figures from the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association (ERA).
In 2023, British music fans spent a total of £2.2 billion ($2.8 billion) on music purchases via subscriptions to music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, and vinyl and CD purchases. That’s more-or-less equal to 2001’s total, the historic peak of the CD era, when U.K. music sales stood at just over £2.2 billion, reports ERA. When compared to 2019, the last full year pre-pandemic, music sales have climbed by almost 39% in the space of four years.
Driving the growth was a 9.8% year-on-year rise in subscription streaming revenues, while spending on physical formats was up 10.9% to £311 million ($395 million) the London-based organization says in its preliminary annual figures published on Tuesday (Jan. 9).
Breaking down physical music revenues, vinyl album sales grew 18% to £177 million with Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version), The Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamonds and Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd among the year’s best-selling titles.
Despite CD sales falling 7% year-on-year in volume terms to 10.8 million units, revenue from the long-written-off format actually rose 2% in 2023 to £126 million ($160 million), marking the first increase in CD revenue in two decades.
ERA says the growth can be attributed to the format’s continued popularity among dedicated music fans, keen to buy their favorite artists in multiple and deluxe formats, as well as a rise in the number of Gen Z and Millennials buying CDs.
This Life by British pop group Take That was 2023’s top CD album in the U.K. with just over 127,000 units sold. Swift’s 1989 (Taylor’s Version) was the year’s second most popular CD release.
Streaming now makes up more than 88% of all music sales in the U.K., compared to 64% five years ago, with physical formats accounting for 9.4% of today’s market, according to labels trade body BPI, which released its year-end listening figures last week.
BPI reports that more than 179 billion music tracks were streamed in the U.K. in 2023, up 12.8% on the previous year’s total, with the equivalent of 182.8 million albums streamed or purchased in 2023 across digital and physical formats, up 10% on the previous 12 months.
In a statement, ERA CEO Kim Bayley said the year-end figures represented a “red letter day” for the U.K. music industry with the rise in revenues “a testament not just to the creativity of artists, but to the entrepreneurial drive of digital services and retailers.”
Although both ERA and BPI use Official Charts Company sales data as the basis for their reporting, the two organizations take different approaches to measuring the health of the recorded music business. ERA’s figures are based on retail spending in the U.K., whereas BPI’s measure music consumption levels. (ERA’s subscription streaming numbers are estimates based on information provided by digital services and label trade income reported to BPI). BPI and ERA are both due to publish their full annual reports later in the year.
Overall, revenues across the U.K. entertainment market – comprising of music, video and games retail sales – were up 7% on 2022’s total to a record high of £11.9 billion ($15.1 billion), marking the eleventh successive year of growth. Streaming and digital services accounted for almost 92% of entertainment revenue, reports ERA.
Of the three sectors, recorded music sales are in third place, trailing both games and video (comprising of video-on-demand subscription services such as Netflix and DVD sales), which totaled £4.7 billion ($6 billion) and £4.9 billion ($6.2 billion) respectively.
The U.K. is the world’s third biggest recorded music market behind the U.S. and Japan with sales of just under $1.7 billion in trade value, according to IFPI’s 2023 Global Music Report.
