Aaliyah redefined the R&B music scene by combining old-school tunes with modern sounds. Her influence in music, culture and fashion (think flip phones and bucket hats) have carried on after her untimely death in 2001 from a plane crash.

This hour-long special will take viewers through her emergence as a chart-topping musician (including the Billboard Hot 100), rising actress and fashion icon as a teenager. It’ll also address the circumstances leading to her marriage to singer and producer R. Kelly while she was still underage (he has since been convicted as a sex offender) as well as how Aaliyah’s relevance is seen today.

There will also be exclusive interviews with people considered close to the star, such as music executive Damon Dash, her former boyfriend Barry Hankerson, her uncle and CEO/founder of Blackground Records, and recording engineer and producer Jimmy Douglass, who worked with Aaliyah in the studio.

More exclusive interviews will include recording artists such as Justine Skye, Sevyn Streeter and will.i.am, who have cited her as an influence in their work. Fashion designers and stylists Karl Kani and Aleali will also speak on what it was like to style Aaliyah and how she continues to be a fashion muse.

“The one that was supposed to protect me, and still does interviews saying they will be my ‘forever protector,’ is the one that is hurting me the most,” she continues. “He was the one that started a rumor that said I was hooking up with Drake, having an affair our whole marriage. If you were outside in the 90’s, you no doubt attended or heard about Freaknik, the proudly Black spring break event that would go down in Atlanta. On Thursday, April 6, Hulu announced it’s releasing Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told, a documentary about the famed, or infamous, annual gathering of Black college students and partiers.

Variety reports that Hulu describes the doc as recounting “the rise and fall of a small Atlanta HBCU picnic that exploded into an influential street party and spotlighted ATL as a major cultural stage.

The legend goes that Freaknik, originally Freaknic, started as a gathering in an Atlanta park in the ’80’s. The Georgia city is the home to the HBCU’s of the Atlanta University Center (AUC) that include Morehouse, Spelman, Clark-Atlanta and Morris Brown. Soon enough, word got out of the annual event which quickly grew bigger and bigger, eventually becoming a whole weekend of festivities in April.
Add the burgeoning Atlanta Hip-Hop scene that included the Dungeon Family (OutKast, Goodie Mob) and So So Def Records and the legend only grew and perhaps got too big. The city of Atlanta essentially put the kibosh on Freaknic in 1999, citing safety concerns with politicians going so far as saying they would sue anyone organizing Freaknic events.
Speaking of So So Def, the label’s founder Jermaine Dupri is serving as one of the doc’s executive producers. The documentary seems to be in good hands with director P. Frank Williams and Luther Campbell also serving as executive producers, amongst others.

Sean “Diddy” Combs is returning to reality television, this time with all of his children in a new show for Hulu.
According to reports, the entertainment mogul is in the midst of filming a new reality show for the streaming platform that will focus on him and his children. The show’s tentative title is Diddy + 7, which lines up with a trademark filed by his legal team earlier this year on his behalf. Representatives for Diddy and Hulu offered no comment when contacted.

“It’s going to profile the entire family. They all have businesses — even the kids — and it will feature everyone,” a source close to the show’s creation expressed to reporters. “[The show] is all about the dynamic of the family and how Diddy does it all with all the kids. They’re a real family, even all the baby mamas.”
These sources also report that the family’s individual accounts on Instagram are providing some previews of what potential viewers can expect. The REVOLT TV founder’s son Christian is currently promoting his latest single “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop.” He and twins D’Lila and Jessie are the children of the late model Kim Porter. His eldest son Justin shared a photo of him with his youngest sister Love Sean Combs with the caption, “My twin”. Love was born on October 28th to her mom, cybersecurity specialist Dana Tran. Sources have also reported spotting Diddy and his family shooting scenes in Los Angeles and Miami among other locations around the country.
The 53-year-old’s return to the reality show world will certainly remind many viewers of the Making The Band 2 reality series from 2002 which aired on MTV. The show would last three seasons and contained a few pop culture moments that are still talked about to this day in addition to being responsible for the careers of groups Da Band, Danity Kane, and Day 26. Diddy was recently a judge on The Four: Battle for Stardom which aired on Fox.

Looks like we’re going to be hearing wedding bells on the next season of Only Murders in the Building.

Steve Martin teased some on-set photos via Twitter on Tuesday (March 21), in which he’s seen in a tuxedo linking arms with his co-star Selena Gomez, who is wearing a lacy wedding gown and veil. “Guess what just happened!” he captioned the post, without revealing who Gomez will be walking down the aisle to.

The comedian followed up with another photo of the “Lose You to Love Me” singer smiling with co-star Martin Short, who is also dressed in black-tie attire. “Turns out this happened, too,” Martin wrote.

Gomez also shared some snaps of her bridal moment to Instagram, in which she’s seen sitting on the floor with the tulle of her wedding dress surrounding her, smiling while holding a can of Coke. “I have no caption. Just a regular day at work,” she captioned the post, tagging the Only Murders official Instagram account.

Only Murders in the Building season two, starring the hilarious trio as true-crime loving neighbors who get wrapped up in a murder mystery, dropped on Hulu back in June. Since then, Gomez, Martin and Short have been teasing season three of the popular show throughout the past few weeks of filming — including much-anticipated cameos from Jesse Williams and Emily in Paris star Ashley Park.

Only Murders in the Building season three does not yet have a release date. In the meantime, watch the first two seasons on Hulu here.

Demi Lovato has officially begun directing her very first feature film, Hulu shared on Thursday (March 16).

Along with Nicola Marsh, the pop star will co-direct Child Star, a Hulu Original documentary film that promises to “deconstruct the highs and lows of growing up in the spotlight through the lens of some of the world’s most famous former child stars,” according to a release.

“There is no better film or topic for my directorial debut than this story, which is close to home,” the Disney Channel alum said in a statement. “Our project sheds light on important messages about growing up in the public eye, learning to protect our boundaries, and becoming active advocates of our own destinies. I’m humbled to be able to learn from the individuals who have lived the unique experience of child stardom and share their stories in our film.”

The doc is currently scheduled to stream on Hulu sometime in 2024 and will also follow the paths of several other child stars in addition to Lovato reflecting on her childhood stardom in shows like Barney & Friends, As the Bell Rings, Sonny With a Chance and more.

Most recently, Lovato contributed “Still Alive” to the soundtrack for Scream VI. The track serves as the first follow-up to the nonbinary artist’s rock-heavy 2022 album Holy Fvck, which charted at No. 1 on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums, Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums tallies upon its release last August and spawned the singles “Skin of My Teeth,” “Substance” and “29.”

Hulu shared a first glimpse of its original docuseries based on Spotify’s popular RapCaviar playlist on Tuesday (Feb. 7).
RapCaviar Presents will tackle some of the most provocative issues surrounding hip-hop today through conversations with the genre’s emerging and chart-topping artists, including City Girls, Jack Harlow, Polo G, Roddy Ricch, Coi Leray and more. All seven episodes will premiere via Hulu on March 30.

In the nearly two-minute clip, Tyler, the Creator and Pharrell Williams separately sit down to discuss the impact they’ve had on one another. Tyler recalls meeting with his idol in the studio during his Cherry Bomb European tour in 2015 and the words he shared with him that instigated a significant “switch” in the rapper’s music. “Make something undeniable, and make it equally as infectious,” Pharrell advises in his own interview. “Why are you doing music? Is it just because you just want to look cool? ‘Cause that will burn out. When it becomes purpose-oriented, it can be as cool as the flashy sh–, but it will be much more meaningful.”

“Oh f—!” Tyler exclaims in the next frame. “OK. No more being silly. … Music first. And at that moment, I went home. I just wanted to change everything. I just wanted to switch, and the switch f—ing happened.”

“Spotify continues to find ways to innovate and grow the influence of our playlist brands. We’re excited to expand the RapCaviar universe through this docuseries with our partners at Hulu,” said Carl Chery, Spotify’s head of urban music and creative director of the series, in a statement. “Using hip-hop as a vehicle to examine society, we’re revealing stories through the lens of visionaries like Tyler, The Creator, and the City Girls. Through RapCaviar Presents, we’re hoping to entertain and educate hip-hop fans and spark meaningful conversations about music and culture.”

Karam Gill serves as the executive producer of the series, with Steve Rico as the showrunner. Chery and Liz Gateley are both overseeing creative for the show on behalf of Spotify, with Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman handling on behalf of The Intellectual Property Corporation (IPC), a part of Sony Pictures Television. Av Accius, Jeremiah Murphy and Marcus A. Clarke serve as co-executive producers. Gill, Quan Lateef-Hill, Peter J. Scalettar, Wendy J.N. Lee, Farah X and Mandon Lovett will direct the episodes.
