If you’re one of those people who enjoys Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ content at the expense of a friend or family member without having to pay, start counting your days.

You have until June to get your bank accounts in order and decide whether you want to continue sharing your Disney+ and its family streaming platform account with your homie or other family members.

Those allowing other people to use their Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ accounts will see a message telling them to add that person to their plan for an additional fee, of course.
Speaking with CNBC, Disney CEO Bob Iger talked about Disney’s plans to start cracking down on the popular practice of password sharing. 
Per Variety:
According to Disney chief Bob Iger, the Mouse House this June will “be launching our first real foray into password sharing” enforcement. Iger, during an interview Thursday on CNBC, said the initial launch will be “just a few countries in a few markets” (he didn’t identify them) then “will grow significantly with a full rollout in September.”
The initial communications to Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ customers will prompt password-borrowers to start their own subscriptions, the company has said previously. Later in 2024, account holders who want allow access to individuals outside their household will be able to add them for an additional fee.
When Disney+ begins its crackdown on password sharing, which it hopes will help achieve “double-digit margins, it will join Netflix, which has already begun doing so.
Netflix claims that its effort to crack down on password sharing has been successful in helping boost subscriber numbers.

The length a family would go to be reunited is examined in the new series We Were the Lucky Ones, which premiered its first episode via Hulu on Thursday (March 28). Joey King and Logan Lerman star in the limited TV series, which is adapted from the novel of the same title by Georgia Hunter, and you can stream We Were the Lucky Ones at home now.

Taking place in 1939, the series follows the Kurcs, a Polish-Jewish family separated at the start of World War II. Three generations of the family are put at different parts of the world, and viewers will watch as each character fights their way to safety during one of the darkest times in history. Driven by their need to survive, each family member must cope with the idea of never seeing each other again while leaning on hope and perseverance to keep them alive.

The miniseries was adapted from the novel We Were the Lucky Ones, which Hunter wrote based on true events that happened to her ancestors. The author was born into a family of Holocaust survivors, which she learned more about at a family reunion she went to in 2000, according to her author website. In 2008, she set out to research more about her grandfather, his siblings and the journey they underwent to survive and eventually find their way back to one another.

HipHopWired got the exclusive opportunity to talk with the filmmakers behind the highly anticipated Hulu documentary, Freaknik: The Wildest Story Never Told.

For those in the know, Freaknik was not just a party that gathered nearly every Black person down in Atlanta, Georgia, every spring, but it was a veritable cultural moment. When word broke late last year that there would be a documentary about Freaknik, many immediately wondered if it would focus only on the wildness that came to be associated with the event.

But in Freaknik: The Wildest Story Never Told, we get a clear-eyed and compelling account of Freaknik in all of its aspects thanks to testimony from numerous people including Jermaine Dupri and Luther “Uncle Luke Campbell” (who are executive producers), Lil Jon, 21 Savage and more.
HipHopWired got the chance to talk with producers Jay Allen, Nikki Byles and executive producer Terry “TR” Ross about their experiences in making this documentary and their perspective on Freaknik as it makes its premiere on Hulu March 21.
HipHopWired: How did this documentary project get onto your radar, and how were you all involved?
Jay Allen: So Nikki and I were a few years younger, and we didn’t get to attend Freaknik. But we’ve always heard the stories of Freaknik from family, cousins and friends. Because we live in Atlanta, we always talk about what it would have been like to be there. And then we realized that we wanted to really tell the story. So she and I put together a pitch deck. We put together a sizzle [reel], we got all that stuff together. And then we were trying to figure out what the next steps were. The first thing that Nikki did was, she got on the phone and got Uncle Luke involved.
Nikki Byles: I just happened to reach out to someone and said, “Hey, I need Luke and please let me talk to him.” And so based on that, we ended up telling him what we wanted, and he ended up flying to Atlanta to meet with us. And after we went over everything, he was like, “Yep, I’m on board. Let’s get it.” Then, we spoke with Terry, he added JD [Jermaine Dupri]. Because you definitely need both. And he looked for the ambassador of Freaknik. And you need JD for the music.
Terry “TR” Ross: Well, not only that, but you need JD because he’s one of the most pivotal people in Atlanta right now. So we needed him for that too, not just for the music. I mean, they call him the “mayor of Atlanta.”

Jay: Terry helped us fill in some of the gaps. So we went to LA, sat down in the studio with Terry, and just talked to him about what our vision was. And we told him we had Luke and this is what we’re trying to do. And from then, Terry jumped in and really helped us grow this thing, and also that we could start to take it to market.
Terry: So, basically they brought it to me. And I was extremely interested in it. I thought it was compelling. Because first and foremost, that was the reason why I moved to Atlanta, it was because of Freaknik. I had (Mayor) Kasim Reed – whom I went to Howard with in D.C., and I was from D.C. – Kasim Reed, he’s an Atlanta native. And he said, “You guys need to come to Atlanta for this thing called Freaknik.”
And we’d never heard of it, so we decided to go to Atlanta, and we put on this huge concert for Freaknik. And after that, it was just like, “Yo, I want to live here. I want to move here.” And so we decided to move there. This has come full circle because this is my first film project. Freaknik being the reason I moved to Atlanta, and Freaknik being the first film project I did was really amazing.
When Nikki and Jay brought it to me, I went, “This is something that needs to be told, because the story had never been told the right way.” I said that we need to get the people that have been in Atlanta that’s going to make the documentary where people are going to be authentic and really want to get into it. So me, Nikki and Jay, we met with JD, we met him at a Starbucks.

Jay: I want to highlight how we met him at the Starbucks. We met him outside of a Starbucks where Nikki sat on the ground and typed everything. Me and Terry pummeled him with questions, and it was in the middle of COVID and JD had like four masks on. (Laughs) All this happened in the middle of Atlanta in the middle of COVID.
Terry: Then we decided it would be best to, you know, get some of the tastemakers in Atlanta and start interviewing them. Who did we interview first, Chaka (Zulu)?
Jay: The first was Chaka after JD?
Nikki: Yeah, because we had to get them all in while TR was there.
Jay: Yeah, I think we had Kasim, Too Short, Kenny Burns –
Nikki: For some reason, I remember speaking to Mannie Fresh. (Laughs)
Jay: There were many people in there, yeah. (Laughs)
Terry: KP and Shanti Das, who was very instrumental in breaking OutKast because they broke in Atlanta during Freaknik. She was at LaFace [Records]. Rico Wade of Dungeon Family & Organized Noise.
Jay: You’re the only one getting this story. No one else has asked this, so just know this is an exclusive right here. (Laughs)
HipHopWired: So in terms of interviews and the experience of getting testimonials from folks that attended and those who were in opposition – what was that experience like talking to everyone and getting their recollections?
Jay: Before or after we started filming? Because that’s two different sets.
HipHopWired: After, because as you said with the teaser, there were those that were kind of wondering “Well, what’s going on? What is this going to be?”
Jay: I think when Terry talks about this – we weren’t passing out checks for people to be a part of this. Terry was really picking up the phone. Nikki was really picking up the phone. And these people were coming to sit and talk and tell us their Freaknik stories and help us piece it together. For the love. For the love of the people that have a relationship to it. And that’s how we were able to make the story come together.
Terry: Everybody’s story was different, especially Too Short’s, Lil Jon’s, and of course, JD. Because JD wasn’t even old enough to attend Freaknik, so he would just hang outside in the parking lot and just pass out his tapes. And that’s pretty much how Shanti said they broke OutKast, because they had these tapes that they were passing out, and then people were playing them in their cars. Because there was nowhere to go, you couldn’t move. (Laughs) So they would pop the tape in and they were just riding up and down the street and people were bumping OutKast.

Jay: And these are people that are legends now, like Shanti. Yeah, she’s one of the biggest women in music entertainment. Kasim Reed was just an early law student then, and Kasim is literally explaining to us how the government was working back then. One thing that didn’t make it to the documentary that was super interesting is how important Southwest Atlanta was to all of this coming together. And it was a really incredible story. Because Shanti, Kasim – there’s a group of mayors that all come from Southwest Atlanta. And they really just broke down the story. So you’re literally seeing the people that are the biggest leaders in their industries—from music to executives to politics—really be at the forefront of what Freaknik was and what it became.
HipHopWired: Building off of that, how happy are you guys with the reception that you’ve gotten so far with this documentary, showing such a cultural moment for Atlanta and the South overall?
Terry: I always say this: Atlanta wouldn’t be Atlanta without Freaknik. It would not be the same. Freaknik made Atlanta what it is today. Hands down, no doubt. Because people came from all over the country to Atlanta and then stayed. So you started getting a bunch of Black people from different parts of the country that came down and started having their own record labels. We built our record label out of Atlanta, we had a record label called Noontime.
We had Jazze Pha, Brian Michael Cox, Ciara and Latoya Luckett. All of these people came from us. And then you had the LaFace standard, and you had So So Def, and then you had Dallas Austin. And then you had the Dungeon Family. Freaknik started flourishing because of all of the different people that were coming into Atlanta and getting that culture because that was a whole different culture down there than any other city.

HipHopWired: If there is one – you can narrow it down to one – what was your all-time favorite moment making this film?
Nikki: My favorite moment, all-time favorite was Clay Evans. Getting his interview and talking to him about his time at Freaknik. I wish we could have just shown his whole interview. How he acted; y’all he acted so crazy that day of filming. He wouldn’t let anybody talk to him. I was the only one allowed to talk to him. Nobody else can look him in the face. Everybody refers to him in the third person. (Laughs) Yeah, he sent me a two-page rider and let me know that he wanted oysters, but he’s the only one that does the shucking. I provided nothing. I gave him juice. And you have a good day.
Terry: We can’t leave out a very important partner. And that’s Alex Avant who was Clarence Avant’s son. I’m good friends with him. Alex was instrumental in bringing Hulu to the table. So, Alex saw the vision as well.
Jay: And to piggyback on what TR said, my favorite moment of the film is not even a film. What people don’t know is with me, Nikki and TR, other people are in the mix. For me, Nikki and TR are on the frontlines of this. And people know what we went through just putting together materials to pitch, to talk to people to get them convinced, to tap into his entire network, TR tapping into his entire network. And to see the big billboards in LA and New York and everywhere else off the idea that we were literally sitting with, like looking at each other like, “Are we crazy? Is this is a good idea?”
We’re at South by Southwest and we all look at the crowd like, “Oh, we did it.” That’s the moment for me that I was just like…you can’t let people tell you that you’re crazy. We did get rejection letters from people, people who told us that this wasn’t relevant and nobody cared about it. So to have a billboard in Times Square in the middle of a promotion that broke the internet? It just makes me appreciate these people on this call. I know we believe in ourselves and we kept pushing from day one. Never, never hesitated. And we should give some love to Tamara Knetchel. Tam connected us, she’s an unsung hero.

In a two-and-a-half minute trailer that dropped on Thursday (March 7), singer Jon Bon Jovi excitedly says “I’ve got a story to tell” over the strains of the band’s iconic hit “You Give Love a Bad Name,” as estranged guitarist Richie Sambora jokes, “I’m excited… are we telling the truth, are we gonna lie? What are we gonna do?”

Bon Jovi reveals that making it as a rock band was the only path forward for him. “There was no plan B in my life, ever,” he says over images from his early days grinding it out in bars. “Bon Jovi was all or nothing.”

There is, of course, plenty of footage of the band’s early shaggy-haired period, with elder Garden State statesman Bruce Springsteen remembering the first time he saw that “young kid” from his backyard “makin’ some noise.” The group’s members recall the rocket ride to fame they embarked on, which got super-charged with their third studio album, 1986’s Slippery When Wet. That album marked the beginning of Jon Bon Jovi and Co. dominating sales charts around the globe, unleashing a stream of hits, including the Billboard Hot 100 leaders “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer.”

The singer recalls the day they wrote “Prayer,” saying the group didn’t “think much of the song,” which Sambora boasts is still their best effort to date. “Jon’s choruses demand to be sung by 20,000 people in an arena,” Springsteen says.

Slippery When Wet was the first of the band’s six leaders on the Billboard 200, an album that ignited a global fanbase and ensured the New Jersey favorites would, indeed, play arenas and stadiums for as long as they remained active.

It hasn’t all been a bed of roses. The ride has been stacked with triumphs and setbacks, good times and bad, and “public moments of friction,” all of which are captured in the series. The trailer hints at the wages of success, with Bon Jovi saying the global fame and wild antics “almost killed us,” and Sambora adding that he didn’t regret leaving in 2013, but lamenting “how I did it.”

All episodes will arrive for streaming April 26, retelling the Bon Jovi story with personal videos, unreleased early demos, original lyrics, and never-before-seen photos, according to Hulu.

The series joins the band in February 2022, an uncertain moment in their odyssey, four years after their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a decade after guitarist/co-songwriter Sambora’s departure at a time when Bon Jovi was battling a vocal injury which required major reconstructive surgery.

In addition to Springsteen and the other members of the band, longtime manager Doc McGee appears in the series.

Ever since word got out that there would be an official documentary about the famed, or infamous, Freaknik of the 1990’s, people of a certain age were shooketh that they would be spotted in archival footage. The arrival of first look images from Hulu’s forthcoming documentary, Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told, has surely raised their anxiety.
Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told is set to premiere on March 21. The doc boasts that it will reveal the “untold” story of the HBCU picnic in Atlanta that managed to go viral before the advent of social media.
While the official trailer won’t be dropping unit tomorrow (Thursday, February 29) at 8am, on the last day of Black History Month, Hulu is encouraging viewers to drop reactions on Twitter and TikTok with the hashtag #FreaknikDoc.
Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told is executive produced by Jermaine Dupri, Uncle Luke, and 21 Savage while the showrunner is Geraldine Porras and it is directed P. Frank Williams. Just like the first season — which focused on Bette Davis and Joan Crawford — the drama will delve into another very real, rocky relationship. Except this time it won’t be centered on two actresses; season 2 will be an adaptation of the nonfiction book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer.

From the first episode, you’ll be transported to 1970s high-society Manhattan when author Truman Capote (Tom Hollander) was at the height of his career after publishing In Cold Blood. At the time, he considered his closest friends to be some of New York City’s wealthiest women, whom he called “the swans.” With high society at his fingertips, he quickly becomes the swans’ confidante, but he ultimately betrays them in 1975 when he publishes a scandalous short story titled La Côte Basque, 1965, exposing some of his friends’ innermost secrets to the world. Not only will you be given a look into the lead-up to his publishing, but the aftermath and ultimately the events leading to Capote’s death in 1984.

Starring alongside Hollander is Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny, Calista Flockhart, Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Treat Williams, Joe Mantello and Russell Tovey.

How to Watch Feud: Capote vs. The Swans

Feud: Capote vs. The Swans is an FX Original, which means just like Murphy’s popular series American Horror Story, you’ll need the FX channel or Hulu in order to watch it. Diddy continues to lose out on multiple bags due to the sexual assault lawsuits levied against him.
Spotted on Variety, a reality show in early production following the embattled music mogul and his family, has been scrapped by Hulu.
The website reports that the show was being developed with the working title Diddy+7 and James Corden’s production company, Fulwell 73, producing.

The scrapped reality show is the latest blow to the Diddy, born Sean Combs’ crumbling empire following the multiple sexual assault lawsuits that came after his ex-girlfriend, singer/actor/model Cassie Ventura alleged that 54-year-old raped and beat her for over a decade.

Combs denied any wrongdoing and would eventually settle with Cassie one day later, but that was not the end of his problems.

A week later, the hits kept coming when Joi Dickerson-Neal said that she was “drugged, sexually assaulted and abused” by Diddy and the victim of “revenge porn” that was created and distributed by the rapper.
A third lawsuit from a woman calling herself Jane Doe came alleging that Diddy and R&B singer and former member of Guy Aaron Hall “took turns raping her and her friends” and Hall’s apartment sometime between 1990 and 1991.
In another lawsuit, another Jane Doe said Combs, Bad Boy Entertainment president Harve Pierre, and a third man raped her when she was 17.
Diddy finally decided to break his silence on December 6 with a statement shared on Instagram and it read:
“ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy. Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday. Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.”

Hulu has scrapped a reality show that was to follow Sean “Diddy” Combs and his family, according to a new report in Rolling Stone. Though it’s not clear when Hulu stopped making the show, the report comes after multiple allegations of sexual assault and abuse were lodged against the rapper and entrepreneur over the past month.
The project, which reportedly had a working title of Diddy+7, was being produced for Hulu by James Corden‘s production company, Fulwell 73, which also works on The Kardashians. A source with knowledge of the situation tells Billboard the show was in its nascent stages and is not currently in production.

Combs has been sued for sexual assault by a total of four women, including his longtime romantic partner, R&B singer Cassie, who accused him of rape and physical abuse, among other allegations. Though that case settled the day after it was filed, Combs was subsequently sued by three more women, all Jane Does, who say the hip-hop mogul sexually assaulted them. In the most recent case filed, the woman says she was “sex trafficked” and “gang raped” by Combs, former Bad Boy Records president Harve Pierre and another man in 2003 when she was 17. A separate case over that alleged incident was filed against Pierre and Bad Boy alleging sexual assault.

Combs has strongly denied all of the allegations; on Dec. 6, he released a public statement that said in part: “Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday. Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.”

In the aftermath of the allegations, Combs stepped down from his role as chairman at Black music TV company REVOLT on Nov. 28. The company simultaneously released a statement saying that while Combs “had previously no operational or day-to-day role in the business, this decision helps ensure that REVOLT remains steadfastly focused on our mission to create meaningful content for the culture and amplify the voices of all Black people throughout this country and the African diaspora.”

According to Rolling Stone, a total of 23 brands have severed ties with Combs’ e-commerce marketplace Empower Global, which officially launched in July, since the allegations came out. The outlet also reports that in the wake of the lawsuits, liquor company Diageo — with which Combs has been embroiled in a bitter legal battle over his DeLeon Tequila brand for months — filed a request asking a judge to deny Combs’ request to control a $15 million marketing budget for DeLeon, which would entail his image appearing in new ads for the spirit.

Combs released a new album, The Love Album: Off the Grid, in September via his Love Records imprint.
