Welp, E3 2023 has been put on ice…again.
IGN broke the news that two sources confirmed with the website that the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) is canceling this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.
The sad news comes after multiple video game companies like Ubisoft, Sega, and Tencent pulled out of the event, giving the gaming industry and gamers the vibe that E3 2023 was not happening.
Per IGN:
Two sources have confirmed to IGN that the organization announced the cancellation via an email sent out to its members today. The email said that while E3 “remains a beloved event and brand,” that the 2023 version “simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry.”
The ESA concludes the email by reiterating its commitment to advocacy work. It does not mention undertaking the show again in future years.
The ESA did confirm IGN’s reporting with a statement from Kyle Marsden-Kish, Global VP of Gaming, ReedPop:
This was a difficult decision because of all the effort we and our partners put toward making this event happen, but we had to do what’s right for the industry and what’s right for E3. We appreciate and understand that interested companies wouldn’t have playable demos ready and that resourcing challenges made being at E3 this summer an obstacle they couldn’t overcome. For those who did commit to E3 2023, we’re sorry we can’t put on the showcase you deserve and that you’ve come to expect from ReedPop’s event experiences.
The statement also claims that ReedPop and the ESA will continue to work on “future E3 events.” We shall see about that.
Twitter Says RIP To E3
Reactions to the news immediately began to hit Twitter timelines, with some users congratulating Summer Game Fest’s creator Geoff Keighley for officially owning the summer.

Keighley didn’t waste any time plugging his event after the news broke about E3 2023.

RIP E3 became a trending topic immediately, with gamers and members of video game media sharing fond memories of past E3 conventions.

We are one step closer to that long-awaited television adaption of Gears of War.
Variety exclusively reports that Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts has boarded Netflix’s forthcoming adaptation of the popular Xbox video game, Gears of War.
Spaihts has co-written 2021’s Dune, the upcoming Dune sequel, and Doctor Strange and hopes to deliver another great television adaptation of a video game franchise.

“Gears of War’ is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates. It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen,” Spaihts told Variety in a statement.
The Netflix film is just one part of the GOW universe it hopes to build after landing a deal with Gears of War developer, The Coalition in November 2022. If all goes as planned, the feature film will come first, with an adult animated series behind it and then potentially spinoff series.
The game centers around human civilization as they fight to survive against a subterranean threat called The Locust Horde. The human race’s last hope lies with a disgraced sergeant, Marcus Fenix, who leads Delta Squad, a ragtag group of soldiers.
[embedded content]
“We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring ‘Gears of War’ to life,” The Coalition said. “Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves ‘Gears of War.’ We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
Does This Mean Dave Bautista Is Joining The Project?
This is the most significant development in adapting Gears of War into a film. Before Netflix got on board, New Line Cinema acquired the rights to turn GOW into a film in 2007, before Scott Stuber, now head of original films at Netflix, joined Epic Games as a producer in 2013.
Universal hired  F. Scott Frazier to pen an adaption in 2018, but nothing ever came of that.
As far as casting, one name has come up for years, and it’s none other than Dave Bautista, who fans have chosen from the jump to play Marcus Fenix because of the uncanny resemblance.

The former WWE superstar turned actor has even lobbied for the role, and it also helps The Coalition’s release of DLC using Bautista’s likeness in the game.
With Spaihts onboard, it makes all the sense for Bautista to land the role since they worked together on both Dune and Dune: Part Two.
So, with that said, make it happen. Give Bautista the role. Looking at you, Netflix.

Microsoft is working hard to get Xbox on as many platforms as possible, including smartphones. That could be a reality soon, but it all hinges on one big thing.

Speaking with the Financial Times, Xbox Chief Phil Spencer, spoke on the company’s ambition to bring an Xbox Games Store to the iPhone sometime this year, but that all depends on current regulatory measures.

The biggest roadblock is Microsoft’s $75 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, currently in limbo, according to the chief executive of Microsoft Gaming, that would give the tech giant a wide portfolio of mobile games. The app store’s launch also hinges on the EU’s Digital Markets Act plus other regulations that will allow for the enforcement of other app stores to appear on iOS.
“We want to be in a position to offer Xbox and content from both us and our third-party partners across any screen where somebody would want to play,” Spencer said to the Financial Times. “Today, we can’t do that on mobile devices, but we want to build towards a world that we think will be coming where those devices are opened up.”
Apple Is Preparing For The Launch of Alternative Store Apps on The iPhone
Apple, who is notoriously protective of its sh*t, is prepping iOS for the upcoming change by preparing to allow alternative app stores on the iPhone to comply with the Digital Markets Act that reportedly coming into play in March 2024, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Gurman further reports Apple will roll out the changes with iOS 17 updates for iPhone next year in Europe only so that still leaves American iPhone users out of the loop.
Currently, you can access Xbox games on your mobile devices through the Xbox Cloud Gaming’s web client, and while it works smoothly depending on certain factors like internet connection, it’s not as stable as a dedicated app would be.

RoboCop issues out his brand of justice in a new gameplay trailer.
Teyon Games aims to deliver the superior experience as the law enforcement cyborg in its RoboCop: Rogue City video game.
The gameplay overview trailer was dropped during publisher, Nacon’s, Nacon Connect showcase showing not only show RoboCop taking out thugs with his trusty auto-9, and knocking them clear across the room, but also handing out parking tickets. We are very serious about that last part.

We also learned the game will be coming out later than expected with its new release date.
Take Out Criminals & Hand Out Parking Tickets In RoboCop: Rogue City

The trailer shows the popular late 80s early 90s action film character patroling the crime infested streets of Old Detroit. Using his computer programmed detective skills we see Alex Murphy root out a drug den in the basement of an arcade.
Once he finds the perps, he whips out his auto-9, and even switches to a machine gun to vicisouly take out the criminals stupid enough to think they can stop RoboCop. The trailer also showcase exactly how bloody this game will be, which should be a welcome sign to fans of the RoboCop film franchise.
Blowing away crooks is not the only thing RoboCop will do in Rogue City. As mentioned above we see him the cyborg cop handing out a ticket to a car parked too close to a fire hydrant.
Another big deal is the fact Peter Weller, the actoer who played Alex Murphy/RoboCop in the first two films lends his voice for the game. He doesn’t sound exactly like he does in the films, but we’re gonna chop that it up to the fact he is 75-years-old now.
Still, this one of the games we are very curious about and are looking forward to playing RoboCop: Rogue City when it drops in September on on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
No word if this game will be on the Nintendo Switch.

The ongoing battle between Sony and Microsoft over this Activision Blizzard acquisition continues to get weird.
Sony has numerous concerns about Microsoft’s still stalled acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and now thanks to a PDF, we know every one of them.
In the documents sent to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Sony says it fears that Microsoft could raise the price of Call of Duty, make it exclusive to its Xbox Game Pass service, and sabotage the game so that it runs poorly on PlayStation consoles.

To be more specific, Sony hints at Microsoft releasing a Call of Duty game on PlayStation full of bugs and errors.
Sony’s claims in its documents:
Microsoft might release a PlayStation version of Call of Duty where bugs and errors emerge only on the game’s final level or after later updates. Even if such degradations could be swiftly detected, any remedy would likely come too late, by which time the gaming community would have lost confidence in PlayStation as a go-to venue to play Call of Duty. Indeed, as Modern Warfare II attests, Call of Duty is most often purchased in just the first few weeks of release. If it became known that the game’s performance on PlayStation was worse than on Xbox, Call of Duty gamers could decide to switch to Xbox, for fear of playing their favourite game at a second-class or less competitive venue.
It remains unclear if Sony means that Microsoft would intentionally wreck the game or do the whole “plays best on Xbox” thing because it will own the franchise if the acquisition goes through.
Still, Sony has fears Microsoft could sabotage COD on PlayStation in multiple ways by “degrading the quality and performance of Call of Duty on PlayStation compared to Xbox”; “degrading Call of Duty to ignore PlayStation-specific features (eg. better controller haptics)”; or “restricting, degrading, or not investing in the multiplayer experience on PlayStation.”
None of This Makes Any Sense For Microsoft Financially
While these are legit concerns, financially and optically, it makes no sense for Microsoft to do such a thing even if they wanted to.
Sony is also very concerned about the Xbox Game Pass exclusivity for Call of Duty, fearing Microsoft would prevent the company from putting the game on its subscription service.
Ironically in documents submitted by Microsoft, they claim the exact opposite, with Microsoft claiming “any CoD Game in a Microsoft multi-game subscription is eligible for inclusion in Sony’s multi-game subscription service, at the same time and for the same duration.”
Sony is scoffing at that deal because it does not care about the licensing terms or pricing, adding the terms “would commercially destroy Sony Interactive Entertainment’s (SIE) multigame subscription business model.”
MS Has Made Two Big Offers To Ease Regulator’s Concerns
Microsoft did extend a 10-year offer to Sony to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation, but the Japanese company has yet to sign the deal. Microsoft secured a 10-year agreement with Nintendo hours before meeting with the EU regulators and reached a similar deal with Nvidia in what many saw as a way to put more pressure on Sony.

Sony remains firm in its stance, writing in its documents, “Microsoft has not shown any real commitment to reaching a negotiated outcome. they had dragged their feet, engaged only when they sensed the regulatory outlook was darkening and favored negotiating in the media over engaging with SIE.”
Still, Microsoft’s decision to strike deals with Nintendo and Nvidia seems to have worked, as the EU will reportedly approve the $68.7 billion acquisition deal.
That leaves the United States as the last remaining hurdle.

One of the greatest villains in pop culture history is coming to Call of Duty.
Wednesday, Call of Duty announced on its official Twitter account in a teaser that players will be able to play as The Shredder, the notorious villain from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as an operator.

The brief teaser didn’t showcase any gameplay but did give us a glimpse of how Oroku Saki will look in the video game.

The Shredder will be donning his signature villainous drip with a Call of Duty twist while dishing out pain with not one but two katana swords.
Another cool feature is a mutagen canister with TCRI written on it that fans will recognize from the cartoons and films.

This will mark the first time The Shredder leaps out of the TMNT franchise into another IP. His eternal enemies, the Ninja Turtles, have frequently appeared in other video games.
The Heroes in a Half Shell have appeared in Injustice 2 thanks to a character DLC pack, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, Splatoon 2 Splatfest, and Knockout City.
Call of Duty Has A Rich History of Featuring Movie Characters
The Shredder will join the likes of The Terminator, John Rambo, Die Hard’s John McClane, Godzilla, Texas Chainsaw Massacre’s Leatherface, and Saw’s Billy The Puppet as other popular movie characters to join the game.
The news of The Shredder coming to COD is a huge surprise and follows the release of the first trailer for Seth Rogen’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem animated film.
You can bet there will be more TMNT-related crossovers coming down the pipeline, and we will be looking forward to all of them.
The Shredder will arrive in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 on March 21.

Horror video games are all the rage again, and Blumhouse Productions, one of the biggest studios that push out horror films at a ridiculous clip, is getting in on the action.

The studio behind M3GAN, Insidious, The Black Phone, and GET OUT is looking to make the next big horror game with the announcement of Blumhouse Gaming.

According to Deadline, Jason Blum’s production company, Blumhouse Productions, will enter the gaming space as Blumhouse Gaming, Zach Wood as President, and Don Sechler as CFO.
While the goal is to produce and publish games, Blumhouse Games aims to help independent game developers create “original, horror-themed games for console, PC, and mobile audiences.”
Indie Developers Blumhouse Games Is Looking To Work With You
Per Deadline, Blumhouse Games solely “will target indie-budget games (below $10M) in pushing creative boundaries.”
“For some time, we have been looking to build out a team to start accessing the growth opportunity in interactive media. When we sat with Zach and Don, they articulated an approach that resonated with Blumhouse’s model, and we knew it was a perfect place for us to start our push into the interactive space,” Abhijay Prakash, Blumhouse President, said in a statement.
“With their experience, sensibility, and knowledge of the gaming marketplace, Zach and Don are the ideal leaders to leverage Blumhouse’s unique genre strengths into gaming,” he continued.
Wood adds, “Through my time in the industry, I’ve had the good fortune of working closely with developers to bring their ideas to life. There’s a unique opportunity for horror and genre in the indie game space, and I’m thrilled about teaming up with Blumhouse to meaningfully leverage the company’s brand, reputation, and creative talent.”
Does this mean we might get a video game based on M3GAN or GET OUT? We sure hope so.

Earlier this week, it was announced Miami Marlins’ electric All-Star Jazz Chisholm is the new cover athlete for the 2023 edition of The Show. New York Yankees fans rejoice. Derek Jeter is gracing the cover of the MLB The Show 23: The Captain Edition.

The announcement of the Captain Edition of MLB The Show 23 came last night during the World Series-winning/ Hall-of-Fame shortstop’s visit to The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon Show.
