While it’s not the same “As It Was,” Olivia Wilde is still supporting Harry Styles (albeit subtly) in the months after the duo’s breakup. The Booksmart director recently liked one of the singer’s sister Gemma’s Instagram posts, in which Harry is singing “Treat People With Kindness” and One Direction’s breakout hit “What Makes You Beautiful” […]

(Not) part of your world. The director of the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid explained in a new interview on Tuesday (April 4) why Harry Styles didn’t end up playing Prince Eric.

“We met with him. He was lovely. What a wonderful guy,” director Rob Marshall confirmed to Entertainment Weekly. “But at the end of the day, he really felt like he wanted to go off and do the movies that he ended up doing, which were sort of darker.”

The movies Marshall referenced included the pop star’s leading roles in the 2022 sci-fi thriller Don’t Worry Darling opposite Florence Pugh and Chris Pine, directed by Styles’ former girlfriend Olivia Wilde, and the LGBTQ drama My Policeman.

Marshall also posited that the former One Directioner’s choice to turn down the Disney musical may have been an intentional strategy on his part. “For a lot of young musical people like Harry, you’re trying to carve your way and you don’t wanna be seen as a singer, necessarily,” he stated. “That’s why he was really looking to do something not in the musical genre, to really stretch himself. It was really a fun idea to play with, but in the end, I always think things happen for a reason. I’m so happy to have two young, new people in the film.”

Instead, British actor Jonah Hauer-King will portray Prince Eric in the film, which opens in theaters May 26 and stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder and more.

More than a decade after being introduced to the world, Harry Styles‘ career continues to blossom. Since releasing his self-titled debut album in 2017, the singer has played sold-out shows around the world, won his first Grammy and even ventured into acting in feature films.

He’s admired not just for his angelic voice and infectious smile, but also for his heartfelt songwriting and passion for the message TPWK (Treat People With Kindness). Among his fans are major artists from various genres — Lizzo and BTS’ Jung Kook, for example — some of whom have even covered his songs.

Check out our roundup of some of the most notable covers of his tunes below:

Lizzo, “Adore You”

Lizzo surprised a Miami crowd in January 2020 when she brought Styles on stage to sing her feel-good banger “Juice.” A month later, she belted a sultry and soulful twist on his song “Adore You” for her BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance. What else did she bring to her cover that the original was missing? A flute solo, of course.

Jung Kook, “Falling”

Jung Kook surprised ARMY when a passionate and piano-driven rendition of “Falling” dropped on BTS’ official YouTube channel in October 2019. This isn’t the first surprise cover drop from the boy band member, but his perfect harmonies on Styles’ emotional ballad had fans swooning.

Sabrina Carpenter, “Late Night Talking”

Sabrina Carpenter took on Styles’ Harry’s House single with her honeyed, soft vocals, backed by drums and keys. She was so natural on the track, it’s like she wrote it herself.

Kelly Clarkson, “Watermelon Sugar”

“Watermelon Sugar” is just one of dozens of songs Kelly Clarkson has covered on her talk show’s Kellyoke segment. With her classic runs and iconic gritty voice, she effortlessly sang the Billboard Hot 100 chart topper in October 2020, just a couple weeks after performing a different track from Fine Line, “Adore You.”

Kygo and Ellie Goulding, “Sign of the Times”

The duo behind “First Time” traded synth beats for acoustics with their rendition of “Sign of the Times.”  Their BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge performance in May 2017 begins with just Goulding’s recognizable breathy tone, with Kygo on piano. It slowly builds from there, bringing in an acoustic guitar and backup vocals to the bridge before a somber out.

Little Mix, “Falling”

A year before announcing their break, Little Mix gifted fans with an acoustic cover of “Falling” for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge in September 2020. Each member showed off their vocal abilities in solos throughout the verses, and came together in harmony for the chorus.

Watch it here.

Måneskin, “Kiwi”

Eurovision winners Måneskin go all out during their live rock shows, and since 2018, Styles’ “Kiwi” from his debut album would occasionally find its way into the group’s setlist. Their take on one of Styles’ most classically rock-sounding tracks is high energy, complete with the original song’s electric guitar solo.

There are no official videos or audio recordings of the cover online, but you can check out the band’s July 2019 take on “Kiwi” during their Milan show here.

There’s a lot of pressure when covering a hit song, especially when that song had topped the Hot 100 for 15 weeks. However, taking on Harry Styles‘ “As It Was” was no issue for 32-year-old Cait Martin, who put a soulful rendition on the track for her The Voice blind audition.

Her clean vocals and angelic high notes had all four coaches — Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, Chance the Rapper and Niall Horan — turning their red chairs around for a chance to get the budding star on their team this season.

However, Martin’s mom, who was watching the whole thing from side stage, knew immediately who she wanted her daughter’s coach to be. “Kelly! Kelly! Kelly!” she was heard chanting, to which Clarkson hilariously replied, “You know what they say. You should always listen to your parents. That’s the better path. That’s the one God tells us.”

The original American Idol went on to say, “I turned around instantaneously. I could tell in your voice and how much control you had in the beginning — that beautiful vibrato is so crystal clear — and I knew you were going to go big and powerful, but I didn’t know how big your range was. That was high and you did it so effortlessly. I feel like I would be such a great coach for you. I believed in you light years before these guys turned around.”

Shelton then made his case to be Martin’s coach, using the excuse that season 23 is his last on the show. “I would love to go out with a win on this thing. I think that I can dig down deep and somehow find the energy and passion one more time to win The Voice. It would be awesome if you would be on the last Team Blake,” the country star shared.

Chance the Rapper went on to compare Martin to Whitney Houston, and Horan complimented the singer on her storytelling abilities. “You guys are not making it easy for me whatsoever,” Martin said in response.

Check out the impressive audition below, and be sure to tune in to The Voice on NBC on Monday at 8 p.m. ET to see who Martin’s coach is.

In 2021, Harry Styles unveiled the “Banana Song” onstage in Nashville, Tenn., warping the lyrics to “Watermelon Sugar” to shout out a fan in the audience dressed as, you guess it, a banana.

The sweet moment turned into a hilarious inside joke among Styles’ fans, affectionately known as Harries, who since then, often go to his shows dressed as various produce to catch the Grammy winner’s attention.

On Tuesday (Mar. 7), it worked. While performing at Mt Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, Styles broke out into the “Banana Song” once again after spotting a few fans dressed as the yellow fruit. “She’s dressed as a banana / She’s dressed as a banana / Aye, aye aye,” he’s seen singing joyfully in a viral video posted by a fan to TikTok. Styles then sees a few more banana-dressed attendees and sings, “There’s two more bananas / Aye, aye, aye / One, two, three, four bananas / I can see a fifth banana.”

The “Banana Song” soon got an extended remix, thanks to some veggies in the audience. “There’s two people dressed up as peas / There’s two people dressed up as peas,” he sings, pointing to fans. “Is there anyone dressed as an aubergine? / Is there anyone dressed as an aubergine? / No, no, no, there’s not, there’s not an aubergine.”

Styles has just recently wrapped his Love on Tour dates in Australia and New Zealand, and will be heading to Asia in the next few weeks, stopping in Thailand, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and more.

Watch the 2023 edition of the “Banana Song” below.

It may be a well-known fact that Harry Styles hails from the United Kingdom, but he’ll be taking the New Zealand census come March 7.

As it turns out, the superstar has a concert scheduled at Auckland’s MT Smart Stadium on the very same day the New Zealand government will be conducting its 2023 census. And unlike in the U.S., foreign visitors are required to take part in the bureaucratic process if they just so happen to be in the country on Census Day.

The news was hysterically confirmed by the official Aotearoa New Zealand Census account after a curious fan posed the question via Twitter.

“Thank you for this important query,” the government account tweeted in response. “Everyone who is in Aotearoa New Zealand on census night (Tuesday 7 March), needs to be counted in the census. This includes tourists, visitors, and former members of One Direction.”

The census bureau then attached a hilariously simple artist’s rendering of Styles filling out his census form by using an old photo from his boy-band days. (Ostensibly, the same goes for openers Wet Leg and Styles’ entire touring staff and crew.)

According to a report by CNN, the census requires citizens and visitors to report personal information like number of household members, smoking habits, both gender and sexual identity and personal income, though all answers are kept strictly confidential.

Styles’ Love On Tour is currently in the midst of its latest Oceanic leg with stops planned in the coming days in Melbourne, Gold Coast and Sydney, Australia. After leaving Auckland, the singer will head to Thailand for a run of dates across Asia through the end of March.

Read the New Zealand Census organization’s amusing confirmation that Styles will be filling out a questionnaire next month below.

It was a history-making night for Beyoncé at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night.
Beyoncé’s husband, JAY-Z, once rapped, “tell the Grammy’s fuck that 0 for eight shit,” but that feeling was swept under the rug as the couple returned to the awards show to see if Queen Bey could walk away a big winner.
The Houston native arrived fashionably late and took home four awards for her critically acclaimed album Renaissance. Earlier in the broadcast, her viral hit “Cuff It” won Best R&B Song while she was stuck in traffic. Her collaborators on the song, The-Dream, and Niles Rogers were on hand to accept the award on her behalf.

Beyoncé Was Thankful
Beyonce’s latest project also won Best Dance/Electronic Music Album award. The lead single, “Break My Soul,” won Best Dance/Electronic Recording, and “Plastic Off the Sofa” won Best Traditional R&B performance, cementing her as the greatest winner of all time at the Grammys.
“I am trying not to be too emotional, and I am trying to just receive this night,” she said while fighting tears.
“I want to thank God for protecting me. Thank you God. I’d like to thank my uncle Johnny, who is not here but he’s here in spirit,” of course her parents got love too, “I’d like to thank my parents — my father, my mother — for loving me and pushing me,” she said during her speech.
“I’d like to thank my beautiful husband and my beautiful three children,” was the punctuation on her acceptance speech.

But she didn’t take home two of the night’s biggest honors. Song of The Year went to Lizzo’s retail store anthem, “About Damn Time,” and dedicated her win to the late legend Prince. She also gave Beyoncé her flowers during her speech.

Album of The Year, which always seems to elude Queen Bey, landed on Harry Style’s lap for his album “Harry’s House.” Of course, the BeyHive, who was happy for their queen making history, felt she was more deserving of Album of The Year.

Other Notable Grammy Moments
Other moments we care to talk about include Kendrick Lamar winning three Grammy Awards for his album Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers. He received the Rap Album award from Cardi B and, in his acceptance speech, thanked his family for giving him “courage and vulnerability” to share his truth on the album. He said his latest project was tough to make, and he “found imperfection.”

Lamar also won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for his song “The Heart Part 5.”
23-year-old Bronx Native Jazz singer Samara Joy took home Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album.

Wet Leg will join Styles for the rescheduled shows on January 26, 27, 28 and 29 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, according to the official Harry Styles HQ’s Instagram Stories. The indie rock band retweeted the exciting news, adding a hand heart emoji to the announcement.

Styles has been a longtime fan of Wet Leg, and even covered their song, “Wet Dream” back in May at BBC Radio’s Live Lounge. The whimsical alt-rock anthem, appears on the group’s 2022 debut self-titled album.

“I was in your wet dream, driving in my car,” he sang, moving his hands to the rhythm. “Saw you at the side of the road, there’s no one else around/ You’re touching yourself, touching yourself, touching your — touching yourself.”

Made up of bandmates Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, the duo shared their excitement over one of the world’s biggest pop stars putting his spin on their song by retweeting a clip of Styles’ performance and adding a melting smiley emoji.
