There were snubs and surprises aplenty in the Oscar shortlists that were announced on Tuesday (Dec. 17). Every year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences releases shortlists in 10 categories, including best original song, best original score and best documentary feature. These shortlists constitute an early holiday present for those who made it, […]
No performers have been announced yet, but if the Oscars come calling, Ariana Grande says she’ll be there. The singer, who recently received her first-ever Golden Globe nomination as best supporting actress in Wicked, is a frontrunner for the same category at the Oscars in March. Though the songs from Wicked are not eligible for […]
Miley Cyrus is getting her flowers with her song “Beautiful That Way” receiving a 2025 Golden Globe nomination this week — something the pop star humbly reacted to on X Thursday (Dec. 12).
Three days after the star’s contribution to Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl soundtrack received a best original song nod Dec. 9, Cyrus shared a recent photo of herself and wrote that it’s “an honor” to be nominated alongside her “friends and collaborators” Andrew Wyatt and Lykee Li, who helped write and produce the track.
She also shouted out the film’s leading lady, Pamela Anderson, who the “Wrecking Ball” singer said is “graciously sharing her moment with us.”
“I am continuing to root for her, it’s so fun to watch her shine,” Cyrus added. “Thank you Gia Coppola for inviting me to be a part of your gem ‘The Last Showgirl.’”
“Beautiful That Way” is up for best original song alongside “Compress / Repress” from Challengers, “El Mal” and “Mi Camino” from Emilia Pérez, “Forbidden Road” from Better Man and “Kiss The Sky” form The Wild Robot. On the same day Golden Globe nominations went live, the Hannah Montana alum released the ballad in full for the first time on YouTube.
“Spin baby spin/ The night always falls/ At least you had your day,” she sings over delicate strings. “Now the light shines on some other girl/ Who’s beautiful that way.”
Released in September, The Last Showgirl finds the Baywatch icon’s character — a showgirl named Shelly — navigating life after her show is abruptly shut down. According to Variety, Cyrus recently gushed about her lifelong connection to the actress, revealing that Anderson is “deeply embedded into my earliest memories with my mother.”
“We both worshipped Pam and still do,” the Grammy winner continued. “I took the emotion I have towards those times with my mom and the few times we’ve gotten to spend with Pam. I thought a lot about what this film means to her not just as an actress but as the special person that she is.”
Following a blockbuster run with 2023’s Endless Summer Vacation — which reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and spawned eight-week Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Flowers” — Cyrus is now working on her next album. In November, she revealed that the LP will be heavily inspired by Pink Floyd’s The Wall, “but with a better wardrobe and more glamorous and filled with pop culture,” she told Harper’s Bazaar.
“It was important for me that every song has these healing sound properties,” she added. “The songs, whether they’re about destruction or heartbreak or death, they’re presented in a way that is beautiful, because the nastiest times of our life do have a point of beauty.”
In honor of earning her first Golden Globes nomination since 2009, Miley Cyrus made “Beautiful That Way,” recorded for Gia Coppola’s The Last Showgirl starring Pamela Anderson, available for listening Monday (Dec. 9) via YouTube. Appearing at the end of The Last Showgirl — which follows the Baywatch actress as a performer facing a reckoning […]
After earning her fourth Golden Globes nomination on Monday (Dec. 9), Cynthia Erivo is practically “Defying Gravity.”
In a series of posts to her Instagram Stories, Erivo celebrated her nomination for the 2024 Golden Globes, along with the many nominations for her smash-hit film Wicked. “Now that my feet are hovering off the ground, I cannot even come close to properly expressing what this moment means to me,” she wrote under a photo of herself as Elphaba. “Not just because of this individual nomination, but because I get to watch as this project and my @wickedmovie family are celebrated, too.”
The actress/singer was nominated on Monday for best performance by a female actor in a motion picture – musical or comedy for her role as Elphaba in Wicked. Erivo’s co-star Ariana Grande also received a nomination in the supporting role category for her work as Glinda on the film, while the film itself was nominated for best motion picture — musical or comedy.
“Being a part of this project has been a dream come true, and playing Elphaba, a woman who speaks to everyone who has ever felt like they don’t belong and lets them know they have the power to defy gravity, has been the honor of a lifetime,” Erivo continued.

The actress shared special praise for the film’s director Jon M. Chu — who Erivo thanked for his “wonderful dedication to this work,” and his “care for each one of us on your set” — and for Grande, who she called her “little sister” in a post. “I’m so proud of you. You’re so deserving of this moment, and I’m glad I get to share the seconds and the moments and the days and the years with you,” she wrote. “This journey has been so unbelievably special, and I believe it is the company we have kept together that has made it as special as it has been and will continue to be.”
In one final post on her Stories, Erivo shared a special shoutout to the other women nominated in her category — Amy Adams, Karla Sofía Gascón, Mikey Madison, Demi Moore and Zendaya. “Being named alongside you powerhouses is one of the truest honors of them all,” she wrote. “I can’t wait to be in a room celebrating you all!!”
The new posts come just after Grande herself shared her own thoughts on being nominated, saying that she was “floored and honored to be recognized by members of the @goldenglobes” for the annual ceremony.
Selena Gomez has a lot to celebrate. In addition to receiving a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress on Monday (Dec. 9), the 32-year-old singer-actress also has two friends up for the same category — Emilia Pérez costar Zoe Saldaña and fellow pop star Ariana Grande — whom she cheered on in a post […]

The Golden Globes also announced a new partnership with entertainment data and analytics partner Luminate. The company will provide the Golden Globes team with streaming viewership data for all submitted film titles in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, helping to inform consumption trends and amplify viewership insights beyond box office performance. Analysis will be done via Luminate’s Streaming Viewership product, which measures viewership of originally produced and library content across all major streaming platforms, including Netflix, Max, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Disney+, AMC+ and Peacock. The product fuels Variety’s recently launched Streaming Original Charts.
This will be the second year the Globes have presented the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category. In its first year, it went to Barbie over such rivals as Oppenheimer and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Votes will be tabulated by KPMG, the U.S. audit, tax and advisory firm.
The Golden Globe Awards, which likes to call itself Hollywood’s Party of the Year, is the first major awards show of the season. It’s also the world’s largest awards show to celebrate the best of both film and television.
Nikki Glaser is set to host the show for the first time. Glaser was nominated for her first Primetime Emmy this year for outstanding variety special (pre-recorded) as executive producer and performer on the HBO special Someday You’ll Die. She is currently nominated for her first Grammy Award for best comedy album for that same title.
Viola Davis and Ted Danson have been named as recipients of the Cecil B. DeMille Award and the Carol Burnett Award, respectively. They will be recognized on the Golden Globes telecast. In addition, they will be feted at a separate gala dinner on Friday, Jan. 3, also at the Beverly Hilton. This marks the first time that the Golden Globes will host a special evening dedicated to the recipients of these two honorary awards. Davis became an EGOT in 2023 when she won a Grammy for best audiobook, narration and storytelling recording for her audiobook Finding Me. She has also won an Oscar for Fences, a Primetime Emmy for How to Get Away With Murder and two Tonys for King Hedley II and Fences.

Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Zendaya are used to running up against each other on the Billboard Hot 100 and running into each other at music awards shows.
But now they may also be bumping into each other at non-music awards shows. Pop Stan accounts are buzzing about the possibility that these multi-threats could be nominated for acting awards early next year. Oscar nominations are extremely hard to come by, but Golden Globes (having separate comedy and drama categories) and SAG Awards (having both individual and ensemble categories) are a bit easier to crack.

Let’s take a closer look at these pop stars who are hoping for acting nods.
Lady Gaga
Film: Joker: Folie à Deux
Acting Nods: Gaga received an Oscar nod for actress in a leading role six years ago for playing Ally in A Star Is Born. She also received BAFTA and Golden Globe nods for both that role and for House of Gucci (2022). She won a Globe for TV’s American Horror Story: Hotel (2016). And she has received four SAG Award nominations – as lead actress and also as part of the cast of both A Star Is Born and House of Gucci.
Notes: Gaga more than held her own with Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born. If she’s good in this sequel to 2019’s Joker, she could easily be nominated. Joker: Folie à Deux is a musical psychological thriller directed by Todd Phillips, who received three Oscar nominations for his work on Joker – directing, writing and best picture. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, reprising his Oscar-winning role as the Joker, with Gaga joining the cast as his love interest Harley Quinn. Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled for an international theatrical release on Oct. 2, followed by a U.S. release on Oct. 4.
Selena Gomez
Film: Emilia Pérez
Acting Nods: Gomez was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for the third season of Only Murders in the Building. She has been nominated for a Golden Globe in that category in each of the last two years. And she has been nominated for a SAG Award for ensemble in a comedy series all three years the show has been on the air.
Notes: It took a while for the Emmy acting nod to come, but that’s always been a very competitive category, back to the days of Lucy and Mary Tyler Moore. And Gomez had to prove that she was a full partner with comedy greats Steve Martin and Martin Short. Over the course of three seasons, she has done that.
Emilia Pérez is a Spanish-language French musical crime comedy written and directed by Jacques Audiard. It also stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir and Édgar Ramírez. The film premiered on May 18 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize and its female ensemble won the best actress award. The film has grossed $4.7 million worldwide since its theatrical release in August.
Ariana Grande
Film: Wicked
Acting Nods: Grande was nominated for a SAG Award for cast in a motion picture for Don’t Look Up.
Notes: Wicked is an upcoming musical fantasy directed by Jon M. Chu. It’s the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which received 10 Tony nominations in 2004 (winning three). The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Grande. Wicked will premiere in London on Nov. 18, with a U.S. theatrical release scheduled for Nov. 22. The sequel, Wicked Part Two, is scheduled to be released on Nov. 21, 2025.
Zendaya
Film: Challengers
Acting Nods: Zendaya won two Primetime Emmys for outstanding lead actress in a drama series (2020 and 2022) for her role as Rue on HBO’s Euphoria. The first win made her, at age 24, the youngest winner in the history of the category. The second made her the first Black actress to win twice. Zendaya also won a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a television series – drama (2023) for that role. And she was nominated for a SAG Award for female actor in a drama series in 2023.
Notes: This is a lead role, which would make a nomination harder to land. But she was very good in the sexy and critically acclaimed film.
Challengers is a romantic sports drama directed by Luca Guadagnino, who received an Oscar nod for best picture as a producer of Call Me by Your Name. It stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. The film has grossed $50.1 million in domestically and $94.2 million worldwide since opening in April.
Cailee Spaeny lived a dream scenario at the 2024 Golden Globes: meeting Taylor Swift and discovering that her love for the pop star was mutual.
Both the 25-year-old actress and Swift were nominated for awards at the January ceremony, with Spaeny in the running for best actress thanks to her titular performance in Priscilla and the 34-year-old “Anti-Hero” singer’s Eras Tour concert film earning recognition for cinematic and box office achievement. And though the prizes went to Killers of the Flower Moon‘s Lily Gladstone and Barbie, respectively, Spaeny could argue that meeting Swift was a win in itself.
“It was like I was looking at a real-life Disney princess,” she gushed of the 14-time Grammy winner in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Wednesday (April 10). “I was so inarticulate. I was like, ‘Your hair is so pretty,’ and I said to myself, ‘Oh my God, really!? Is that the only thing you’re going to say?’”
“I also said, ‘I’m a [Kansas City] Chiefs fan and I love you,’ but I didn’t know what to say,” she continued. “And she was like, ‘Yeah, it’s all in one place now.’ And I was like, ‘Exactly!’ So I don’t have many fangirl moments, but that one was a big deal. Anyone my age would agree that you can’t keep your chill in that moment.”

Spaeny, a Missouri native, made sure to specify that she’s been a fan of the Chiefs her whole life — and not just since Swift started dating tight end Travis Kelce in summer 2023. The Craft: Legacy actress also brought Bottoms‘ Ruby Cruz, her good friend and onetime co-star, as her plus-one to the Globes, and Swift had kind things to say to both of them about their performances in HBO’s Mare of Easttown.
“Taylor Swift brought up that she loved Mare of Easttown, which is so crazy, and Ruby went, ‘I’m in Mare of Easttown, too!’” Spaeny told the publication before marveling at Swift’s impeccable memory. “And then Taylor said, ‘But you were blonde in Mare of Easttown, weren’t you?’ So I don’t know what that says about Taylor. Maybe it’s just that she’s a massive Mare of Easttown fan, which is very cool.”
Both Spaeny and Swift are currently gearing up for the release of their latest projects, with the former’s Civil War, in which she stars alongside Kirsten Dunst, hitting theaters Friday (April 12). The latter’s new album The Tortured Poets Department arrives one week later, on April 19.
