Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Zendaya are used to running up against each other on the Billboard Hot 100 and running into each other at music awards shows.
But now they may also be bumping into each other at non-music awards shows. Pop Stan accounts are buzzing about the possibility that these multi-threats could be nominated for acting awards early next year. Oscar nominations are extremely hard to come by, but Golden Globes (having separate comedy and drama categories) and SAG Awards (having both individual and ensemble categories) are a bit easier to crack.

Let’s take a closer look at these pop stars who are hoping for acting nods.

Lady Gaga

Film: Joker: Folie à Deux

Acting Nods: Gaga received an Oscar nod for actress in a leading role six years ago for playing Ally in A Star Is Born. She also received BAFTA and Golden Globe nods for both that role and for House of Gucci (2022). She won a Globe for TV’s American Horror Story: Hotel (2016). And she has received four SAG Award nominations – as lead actress and also as part of the cast of both A Star Is Born and House of Gucci.

Notes: Gaga more than held her own with Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born. If she’s good in this sequel to 2019’s Joker, she could easily be nominated. Joker: Folie à Deux is a musical psychological thriller directed by Todd Phillips, who received three Oscar nominations for his work on Joker – directing, writing and best picture. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, reprising his Oscar-winning role as the Joker, with Gaga joining the cast as his love interest Harley Quinn. Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled for an international theatrical release on Oct. 2, followed by a U.S. release on Oct. 4.

Selena Gomez

Film: Emilia Pérez

Acting Nods: Gomez was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for the third season of Only Murders in the Building. She has been nominated for a Golden Globe in that category in each of the last two years. And she has been nominated for a SAG Award for ensemble in a comedy series all three years the show has been on the air.

Notes: It took a while for the Emmy acting nod to come, but that’s always been a very competitive category, back to the days of Lucy and Mary Tyler Moore. And Gomez had to prove that she was a full partner with comedy greats Steve Martin and Martin Short. Over the course of three seasons, she has done that.

Emilia Pérez is a Spanish-language French musical crime comedy written and directed by Jacques Audiard. It also stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir and Édgar Ramírez. The film premiered on May 18 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize and its female ensemble won the best actress award. The film has grossed $4.7 million worldwide since its theatrical release in August.

Ariana Grande

Film: Wicked

Acting Nods: Grande was nominated for a SAG Award for cast in a motion picture for Don’t Look Up.

Notes: Wicked is an upcoming musical fantasy directed by Jon M. Chu. It’s the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which received 10 Tony nominations in 2004 (winning three). The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Grande. Wicked will premiere in London on Nov. 18, with a U.S. theatrical release scheduled for Nov. 22. The sequel, Wicked Part Two, is scheduled to be released on Nov. 21, 2025.

Zendaya

Film: Challengers

Acting Nods: Zendaya won two Primetime Emmys for outstanding lead actress in a drama series (2020 and 2022) for her role as Rue on HBO’s Euphoria. The first win made her, at age 24, the youngest winner in the history of the category. The second made her the first Black actress to win twice. Zendaya also won a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a television series – drama (2023) for that role. And she was nominated for a SAG Award for female actor in a drama series in 2023.

Notes: This is a lead role, which would make a nomination harder to land. But she was very good in the sexy and critically acclaimed film.

Challengers is a romantic sports drama directed by Luca Guadagnino, who received an Oscar nod for best picture as a producer of Call Me by Your Name. It stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. The film has grossed $50.1 million in domestically and $94.2 million worldwide since opening in April.

Cailee Spaeny lived a dream scenario at the 2024 Golden Globes: meeting Taylor Swift and discovering that her love for the pop star was mutual.
Both the 25-year-old actress and Swift were nominated for awards at the January ceremony, with Spaeny in the running for best actress thanks to her titular performance in Priscilla and the 34-year-old “Anti-Hero” singer’s Eras Tour concert film earning recognition for cinematic and box office achievement. And though the prizes went to Killers of the Flower Moon‘s Lily Gladstone and Barbie, respectively, Spaeny could argue that meeting Swift was a win in itself.

“It was like I was looking at a real-life Disney princess,” she gushed of the 14-time Grammy winner in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Wednesday (April 10). “I was so inarticulate. I was like, ‘Your hair is so pretty,’ and I said to myself, ‘Oh my God, really!? Is that the only thing you’re going to say?’”

“I also said, ‘I’m a [Kansas City] Chiefs fan and I love you,’ but I didn’t know what to say,” she continued. “And she was like, ‘Yeah, it’s all in one place now.’ And I was like, ‘Exactly!’ So I don’t have many fangirl moments, but that one was a big deal. Anyone my age would agree that you can’t keep your chill in that moment.”

Spaeny, a Missouri native, made sure to specify that she’s been a fan of the Chiefs her whole life — and not just since Swift started dating tight end Travis Kelce in summer 2023. The Craft: Legacy actress also brought Bottoms‘ Ruby Cruz, her good friend and onetime co-star, as her plus-one to the Globes, and Swift had kind things to say to both of them about their performances in HBO’s Mare of Easttown.

“Taylor Swift brought up that she loved Mare of Easttown, which is so crazy, and Ruby went, ‘I’m in Mare of Easttown, too!’” Spaeny told the publication before marveling at Swift’s impeccable memory. “And then Taylor said, ‘But you were blonde in Mare of Easttown, weren’t you?’ So I don’t know what that says about Taylor. Maybe it’s just that she’s a massive Mare of Easttown fan, which is very cool.”

Both Spaeny and Swift are currently gearing up for the release of their latest projects, with the former’s Civil War, in which she stars alongside Kirsten Dunst, hitting theaters Friday (April 12). The latter’s new album The Tortured Poets Department arrives one week later, on April 19.

The Golden Globes are set to air on CBS for the next five years, it was announced Monday (March 25).
The deal, which begins with the 2025 edition of the ceremony, will see the film and TV awards show air on CBS and stream live on Paramount+.

“CBS’ collaboration with the Globes for this year’s broadcast was a big win for both of us and established strong momentum for awards shows in 2024,” CBS CEO George Cheeks said in a statement. “The Globes is a one-of a-kind live event that adds another marquee special and valuable promotional platform to CBS’ annual calendar. I’m excited to expand the partnership with [chairman and CEO of Penske Media and Dick Clark Productions] Jay [Penske] and the entire team to continue to drive the Globes forward.”

Globes president Helen Hoehne added, “Today marks a significant milestone for the Globes as we solidify our partnership with CBS and Paramount+ for the next five years. We are incredibly proud of the audience we garnered in 2024 and look forward to building upon the immense success to make the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards the best and most memorable show yet.”

The 2024 Golden Globes, which took place Jan. 7, saw Poor Things, Succession, Oppenheimer, The Bear and Beef among the night’s big winners.

“We’re so proud to continue to call CBS our home for the Golden Globes,” said Penske. “CBS stepped up for the Globes during a very challenging time, and inherently understood its value, while having the foresight, imagination and conviction to bring this iconic show to its many platforms. We’ve long admired CBS’ commitment to some of the greatest cultural live events and partnering for the long-term further cements this show’s legacy and incredible place in history.”

The Golden Globes telecast was something of a hot potato prior to this new deal. After the old iteration of The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, then in charge of the awards show, became persona non grata with industry publicists over accusations of bribery and much-publicized reports about a lack of diversity within the group, longtime broadcaster NBC put the 2022 telecast on ice. A slightly revamped show aired on NBC in 2023, fulfilling its contract. CBS aired the show in 2024 as a one-off. And while the reviews for the show were abysmal — thanks in large part to the hosting job by Jo Koy — the ratings were up and the guest list was wildly impressive. The telecast neared 10 million multiplatform viewers, up 50 percent from its final NBC outing.

That seems to have been enough to seal the deal for CBS. There’s also slightly less baggage these days, now that operation isn’t run by the HFPA. The group fundamentally disbanded in 2023. Dick Clark Productions now owns and produces the Golden Globe Awards. DCP is owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a joint venture between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge that also owns Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter.
