THE BIG NEWS: Universal Music Group and artificial intelligence music service Udio reached a landmark agreement last week to end their lawsuit  – the first major settlement in the battle over the future of AI music. Here’s everything you need to know.

The deal, announced Wednesday, will end UMG’s allegations that Udio broke the law by training its AI models on vast troves of copyrighted songs — an accusation made in dozens of other lawsuits filed against booming AI firms by book authors, news outlets, movie studios and visual artists. The agreement involves both a “compensatory” settlement for past sins and an ongoing partnership for a new, more limited subscription AI service that pays fees to UMG and its artists.

Related

-The agreement is much more than a legal settlement, Udio CEO Andrew Sanchez told Billboard’s Kristin Robinson in a detailed question-and-answer session just hours after the news broke: “We’re making a new market here, which we think is an enormous one.”

-The deal between UMG and Udio will resolve their legal battle, but broader litigation involving rival AI firm Suno and both Sony Music and Warner Music is still very much pending. Are more settlements coming? Does the deal impact the case? Go read my look-ahead analysis of the ongoing court battle.

-Will AI do more harm than good for the music business? That’s the question Billboard’s Glenn Peoples is asking – and financial analysts don’t have a clear answer. Some believe AI’s negatives outweigh its positives, while others see mostly upside. Maybe it’s just too early to know, Glenn says: “In the near term, expect more deals like UMG’s partnership with Udio. Over the long term, expect to be surprised.”

-Artist advocates are already demanding answers about how exactly this whole thing will work. According to the Music Artists Coalition, talk of “partnership” and “consent” are all well and good, but details are what matter: “We have to make sure it doesn’t come at the expense of the people who actually create the music,” MAC founder Irving Azoff said.

-To put it lightly, Udio subscribers were not big fans of the settlement, which saw the company immediately disable downloads – even for songs that users created long before the deal was reached. After two days of outrage and threats of legal action, Udio said it would open a 48-hour window for users to download their songs. But with wholesale changes to the platform coming soon, will that be enough to satisfy them?

Katy Perry is bruised and battered in a new promo shot for what appears to be her upcoming single, “Bandaids.” The singer who is just a month from winding down her global Lifetimes tour, posted a cryptic image on Tuesday morning (Nov. 4) featuring a somber photo of her face, seemingly worse for wear as evidenced by scratches and bruises on her forehead, cheek, lip and nose.

With no further explanation, the image also finds her stone-cold visage bracketed by her name and the single’s title, with the caption teasing a Thursday (Nov. 6) release. At press time no additional information was available on the song, whether it’s a one-off or attached to a new album and a spokesperson for Perry had not returned Billboard‘s request for comment.

Perry released her uptempo, dance-focused seventh studio album, 143, last September, which debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The album, highlighted by the singer’s reconnect with producer Dr. Luke, as well as songs produced and co-written by pop savants Max Martin and Stargate, featured the singles “Woman’s World — which peaked at No. 63 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart — as well as “Lifetimes” and “I’m His, He’s Mine” featuring Doechii.

Perry launched her Lifetimes tour in support of 143 in Mexico City on April 23 and she’s slated to play the first of two shows at Accor Arena in Paris on Tuesday night, followed by shows in Spain, China and Japan, before winding down on Dec. 7 with a gig at Etihad Park in Abu Dhabi. The singer will then take a break and be back on the road next June for a series of festival shows Chile, Brazil, Germany, Madrid, France and Italy.

Following her split from longtime love actor Orlando Bloom in early July after dating on and off for nearly nine years — the couple share four-year-old daughter Daisy Dove — Perry, 41, made her first public appearance with new beau, former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, on Oct. 25. The couple were seen celebrating the singer’s 41st birthday with a date night at the Crazy Horse Paris, leaving hand-in-hand.

The confirmation of their relationship came two weeks after Perry joked about dating rumors during her Oct. 13 London concert, reacting to a fan sign that read, “Katy Perry, will you marry me?”

“You heard I was single? That’s interesting,” Perry responded. “You know you really should have asked me about 48 hours ago.” Prior to that, photos had surfaced of Perry and Trudeau kissing on a yacht after they were previously spotted dining together in Canada shortly after Trudeau was spotted at Katy’s show in Montreal in July.

Kehlani makes her top 10 debut with “Folded,” while Justin Bieber’s “Daisies” and Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need” continue to rise. Billboard‘s chart experts break down the new contender and whether Mariah Carey will come flying in to No. 1 anytime soon. We also took to the streets of L.A. and asked fans what they thought about the top 10 for this week.

Tetris Kelly: The battle between “Golden” and Taylor Swift stays tight as a new contender enters the top 10. It’s time, well, according to Mariah Carey and KATSEYE, but maybe not quite yet on the charts. More on that moment a little bit later. But for now, let’s jump into the top 10. This is the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 for the week dated Nov. 8. Still at 10 is Leon Thomas with “Mutt.”

Guest 1: So, “Mutt,” man, I feel like it’s so, like, relatable to our culture. I love it. It’s got, like, a lot of flavor in it. And the women, I love the women. So it gets you, you know, it gets you in there.

Tetris Kelly: Morgan also stays at No. 9.

Guest 2: I mean, I live in Texas, so everyone’s obsessed with Morgan Wallen. I kind of stay away from what everyone’s obsessed with.

Guest 3: I don’t listen to him. I’ve never been a country girl, but I know he’s big. I don’t actually think I’ve ever listened to a single song by him.

Guest 4: I never even heard of him. You wilding because I don’t know Morgan.

Tetris Kelly: “Elizabeth Taylor” falls to eight.

Guest 4: Music swiftly goes right by me. Oh, hey, she cute. Though, I bet if I heard it, I probably would like it, though.

Tetris Kelly: So not a lot of movement in the bottom of the chart, but I am happy to see Leon Thomas still hanging in there. How we feeling about the chart this week, guys?

Delisa Shannon: I mean, y’all know this, I love me some Leon Thomas, so to see him holding on, I mean, it’s just truly a testament to really pushing a song. I think that’s what we’ve seen time and time again on these charts, where we see a song that not only that the artist is really strong behind, but their fandom is really strong behind.

Halsey is on the mend after spending the night in the emergency room following her Nov. 2 show in Boston.

The singer-songwriter, who had a two-night stop in Boston for her international Back to Badlands tour, took to Instagram Stories on Sunday (Nov. 3) to share that she experienced a “minor medical emergency” after her concert at MGM Music Hall. Despite the overnight ER stay, she confirmed she would be returning to the stage for her second Boston performance as scheduled.

“Boston I’m gonna be honest with ya, after the show last night I was in the ER till 6 this morning,” Halsey wrote. “Minor medical emergency but I am A-Okay now and ready to rock tonight! But if I’m pacing myself, that’s why!” She added a thank you to the hospital staff, calling them “the absolute best team I’ve ever met.”

The 31-year-old artist has been open about her ongoing health journey. In 2022, Halsey revealed she had been diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder, conditions that she says are now being managed or are in remission. “Both of which I will likely have for the duration of my life,” she wrote in a June 2024 Instagram post. She also lives with endometriosis and previously shared she suffered a miscarriage while on tour at age 20.

This latest health scare comes amid a particularly prolific era for the genre-blurring star. The Great Impersonator, released in October 2024 via Capitol Records, debuted at No. 2 on both the all-genre Billboard 200 and Top Album Sales charts. It also debuted atop Billboard’s Top Rock & Alternative Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts. The set earned 93,000 equivalent album units in the United States in the week ending Oct. 31, according to Luminate.

Halsey previously ruled Top Alternative Albums for a week each with If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power in 2021 and Badlands in 2015.

Halsey has charted 20 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including two No. 1 hits: her 2016 Closer collaboration with The Chainsmokers, which topped the chart for 12 weeks, and 2019’s “Without Me,” her first solo No. 1. She’s also earned multiple top 10 albums on the Billboard 200, including Badlands (No. 2), Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (No. 1), Manic (No. 2), and If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power (No. 2).

Diplo got the short end of the stick in his “love triangle” with Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau — something he joked about in a hilarious recent Instagram post.

On Monday (Nov. 3), the DJ shared a selfie he once snapped at a crowded event with the former Canadian prime minister on Instagram. In the picture, Diplo makes a silly face while Trudeau stares straight into the camera.

“the one that got away,” the musician wrote in his caption, playfully referencing Perry’s 2011 hit of the same name.

The humorous post comes a few weeks after Diplo addressed his past fling with the pop star — who is now linked to Trudeau — on Nayeema Raza’s Smart Girls Dumb Questions podcast. At the time, the host had started to say that she knew “so many people” who’d dated the politician, but before she could finish, Diplo had interjected, “… who’ve dated Katy Perry? Like me?”

Indeed, the producer and Perry were briefly romantically involved circa 2014. Three years later, the singer would rank Diplo last on her list of best and worst ex-partners in the bedroom, after which he would write on X that he’d “won the bronze in sex Olympics.”

“Now, Katy Perry’s dating Justin Trudeau,” Diplo continued on Raza’s show. “Pretty fire.”

He went on to joke that he’d “dated Trudeau, too,” but ultimately determined, “That was a weird one, though. I’m just not into politicians. He is kinda hot.”

Diplo’s remarks come shortly after Perry and Trudeau made their debut with their first public outing as a couple, stepping out together in Paris. Before that, the Ottawa native had attended one of the musician’s concerts in Montreal before packing on the PDA with Perry on a boat.

See Diplo’s selfie with Trudeau below, and check out his appearance on Smart Girls Dumb Questions above.
