There’s a reason that New York University is a perennial honoree on Billboard’s Top Music Business Schools list each year: There aren’t too many universities where students can sit down for an exclusive Q&A with industry behemoth Clive Davis and 21st century hitmaker Mark Ronson on a casual Tuesday night to hear insightful, revealing stories about everyone from Aretha Franklin to Adele.
On Tuesday (Nov. 18) night in Manhattan, a couple hundred industry power players, artists, educators and students at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts/Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music sat down to watch an unreleased film (a visual mixtape, really) spanning Davis’ legendary career, a run that saw him boost everyone from Billy Joel to Aerosmith to Patti Smith to Whitney Houston to TLC to Brooks & Dunn to the top. Do You Remember? — first screened at Davis’ 90th birthday and produced by Ronson, Erich Bergen and DJ Earworm — was followed by a Q&A between Davis and Ronson moderated by Anthony DeCurtis.
Both Davis and Ronson have written acclaimed memoirs about their very different careers (Ronson’s book, Night People: How to Be a DJ in ’90s New York City, came out just this year), but much of the discussion covered territory that was brand new or vaguely familiar to the student body in the audience. “Just hit after hit after hit!” exclaimed one astonished student after the screening. “So many different eras.”
What’s fascinating about Davis isn’t just that he was “The Man With the Golden Ear,” but the fact that he refused to do one genre at a time, working with Barry Manilow while also helping Earth, Wind & Fire, or giving the Grateful Dead a late-career win around the same time he was working with golden-age rap group Whodini and sax juggernaut Kenny G.
Guided by DeCurtis (who assisted Davis’ memoir, The Soundtrack of My Life), Davis regaled the crowd with stories about Aretha Franklin’s four bodyguards eating their way up to a massive bill at three-Michelin star Manhattan restaurant Le Bernardin and John Lennon explaining why he didn’t need to listen to the radio to make music: “Do you think Picasso goes to the galleries to see what’s being painted?“ (Lennon, incidentally, had this to say when Davis introduced himself in a diner: “I read Billboard. I know who you are.”)
Ronson also shared some wisdom with the crowd of aspirants, telling students that he only broke through (with Amy Winehouse, incidentally) when he stopped chasing trends and focused on making music he loved — and that sometimes you have to eat crow at a songwriting session and admit that someone else’s idea is better.
Whitney Houston, who was discovered and signed by Davis and remained a lifelong friend until her passing in 2012, was naturally touched upon, though Davis refused to answer the loaded question “Aretha or Whitney” when it reared its head. He did, however, share that at one point, Houston wondered if she should start cowriting her own material, given that Madonna and Janet Jackson did so. His response? If you’re going to do it, the standard to reach is “The Greatest Love of All” (a three-week No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1986). Davis said that after that exchange, she never brought up the idea again.
Though both men have enjoyed very different careers, that story tips to a through line in the Q&A — whether you’re a singer, a songwriter or an executive, you need to know when it’s time to put your foot down and when it’s time to take the L. Because as both Davis and Ronson have demonstrated over the course of their lengthy careers, you can suffer defeat and still emerge victorious when the dust has settled.

Ariana Grande swooped in for a solo Wicked: For Good promo appearance on The Tonight Show on Tuesday night (Nov. 18), and while her movie bestie Cynthia Erivo is skipping interviews on the red carpet ahead of Friday’s opening of the sequel after losing her voice, Grande broke from their silent solidarity pact for a night to belt out some famous duets with host Jimmy Fallon.
The pair ran through a History of Duets, opening with “For Good” from Wicked, naturally, before dipping into Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s titanic “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” bopping and swaying to the soul classic’s groove before taking a hard left turn. Fallon steered into a bit of “Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better) from the 1946 Broadway musical Annie Get Your Gun, with Grande trying to steal back the spotlight with her “no you can’t!” to his “yes I can!” as the two playfully tried to push one another out of frame.
Grande firmly grabbed the attention back by busting into the powerhouse Lady Gaga bits from “Shallow,” with Fallon sitting back as she dove into the deep end, then joining her to croon about rising to the surface in his best Bradley Cooper impersonation. They then slipped into a few lines from the iconic Brandy and Monica jam “The Boy Is Mine” before cranking things up for Bruno Mars and ROSÉ’s “Apt.” and downshifting into the soaring Aladdin ballad “A Whole New World.”
Fallon slipped on some nerdy glasses for a swoon through “Suddenly, Seymour” from Little Shop of Horrors before cueing up the big finale, Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes’ iconic, Oscar-winning “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” from Dirty Dancing. Fallon surely made his show’s lawyers nervous by offering to do the signature lift from the 1987 Patrick Swayze/Jennifer Grey dance romance. Grande got a head start and then took off, landing in Fallon’s arms as he awkwardly spun her around over his head.
Okay, kidding, it was just a stuffed Ari doll, though she sold it by pretending her hip was sore from the high-flying bit.
Grande had plenty to say during her 10th appearance on the Tonight Show, promoting the anticipated movie musical, of course, but also her upcoming appearance on the Dec. 20 Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live, where she will be joined by musical guest Cher. “I’m so excited,” she said, noting that she didn’t find out the pop legend would be joining until two days before it was announced. “I almost passed out. I had no idea what to do. What an honor.”
And not for nothing, Grande predicted that it would be “one of the gayest SNL episodes that has ever happened, right?”
She also talked about what it felt like to film both Wicked movies at the same time, saying it’s been interesting to watch it so many years after the cast finished shooting. “So in my head they’re both one story and one experience,” she said, while happily taking Fallon’s praise for her wand skills in the second half of the blockbuster Broadway adaptation. “It got caught in my wig a few times,” she admitted as Jimmy pulled out a massive glittery prop from the film and asked the movie’s star to show off some of her impressive wand work.

First up this week, UTA signed singer-songwriter, actress and model FKA twigs for global representation in all areas. Twigs most recently released the album Eusexua Afterglow, a follow-up to her acclaimed album Eusexua from earlier this year that just nabbed a Grammy nod for best dance/electronic album. She’s slated to perform at Coachella next April.
Renowned Mexican singer Lucero is embarking on a new chapter in her career with Seitrack Records, the record label division of Ocesa Seitrack. On Oct. 29, the star, who has more than 45 years of experience in TV, film and music, signed an agreement with Octavio Padilla, the company’s director. Ranchera music will be the focus of this new phase of her career, with an upcoming album produced by Aureo Baqueiro. — Tere Aguilera
Miami company Fundamentals, led by Horacio Rodríguez, signed Ecuadorian rising star Jombriel and his longtime collaborator and producer Jøtta. Hailing from Esmeraldas, Jombriel was featured in Billboard‘s On the Radar Latin earlier this year. In March, the 22-year-old earned his first No. 1 on the Billboard Argentina Hot 100 with the Ryan Castro-assisted remix of his viral hit “Parte & Choke,” also featuring Alex Krack and Jøtta. Jombriel’s breakthrough single, “Vitamina” with DFZM and Jøtta, has garnered more than 325 million Spotify streams, according to Fundamentals, and is included on his debut 2025 album, Jombriel de la Suerte. Jøtta, a rising creative force in the Latin music world, is the producer behind these chart-topping hits, which blend dancehall, reggaeton and tropical sounds. — Isabela Raygoza

After Ariana Grande‘s upcoming run of shows comes to a close next year, the sun might set on her life as a touring artist.
While guesting on an episode of Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast posted Tuesday (Nov. 18), the pop superstar explained that while she’s feeling really excited to perform for her fans in 2026, she doesn’t think she’ll do it again any time soon after the trek supporting 2024 album Eternal Sunshine ends. “I’m going to do a small stint of shows next year, because that is something that sounded authentically good to me,” she began.
“Following those authentic impulses, it feels like a really good idea,” Grande continued before reflecting on how she’s been shifting focus in her career to include more acting projects. “My pop career sort of took over my life in a way. I feel very privileged and grateful to learn that there can be room for different creative endeavors … The last 10 or 15 years will look very different to the ones that are coming up.”
“I don’t want to say any definitive things,” she added. “I do know that I’m very excited to do this small tour, but I think it might not happen again for a long, long, long, long time. So I’m going to give it my all. I think that’s why I’m doing it, because I’m like, ‘One last hurrah. For now.’”
It’s not the first time the Grammy winner has hinted that she’d be focusing less on pop music going forward. In October, she revealed that she once thought she would “never” make an album again after her 2020 Positions LP, but that playing Glinda in the Wicked films — the second of which premieres Nov. 21 — inspired her to keep creating music, leading to Eternal Sunshine.
That said, Grande has been even less keen on touring over the years. She hasn’t hit the road since her Sweetener World Tour wrapped in 2019, and when she was asked in 2024 by Variety whether she was planning shows for her Eternal Sunshine era, she replied, “I think the next few years, hopefully we’ll be exploring different forms of art, and I think acting is feeling like home right now.”
This past August, however, Grande announced that she’d be touring after all, with her Eternal Sunshine trek kicking off in June next year and running through August. Her shows are planned for L.A., Atlanta, Chicago, Montreal, London and a few more cities.

HUNTR/X’s “Golden,” from Netflix’s record-breaking animated movie KPop Demon Hunters, rules the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. U.S. charts for a 16th week each. Meanwhile, Bizarrap and Daddy Yankee’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 0/66” debuts in the top 10 of both tallies and Rosalía and Yahritza y Su Esencia’s “La Perla” launches in the Global Excl. U.S. top 10.
The Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts rank songs based on streaming and sales activity culled from more than 200 territories around the world, as compiled by Luminate. The Global 200 is inclusive of worldwide data and the Global Excl. U.S. chart comprises data from territories excluding the United States.
Chart ranks are based on a weighted formula incorporating official-only streams on both subscription and ad-supported tiers of audio and video music services, as well as download sales, the latter of which reflect purchases from full-service digital music retailers from around the world, with sales from direct-to-consumer (D2C) sites excluded from the charts’ calculations.
“Golden” tops the Global 200 with 110 million streams (down 6% week-over-week) and 12,000 sold (down 13%) worldwide in the week ending Nov. 13.
The song boasts the third-longest command since the Global 200 began in September 2020. Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has ruled for 19 weeks since that December and Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars’ “Die With a Smile” dominated for 18 weeks starting in September 2024. (“Christmas” dashes 43-18 up the latest Global 200.)
Taylor Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia” holds at No. 2 on the Global 200, after two weeks at No. 1 in October; Alex Warren’s “Ordinary” is steady at No. 3, following 10 weeks on top beginning in May; Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need” rises from No. 5 back to its No. 4 best; and Swift’s “Opalite” slips 4-5, after hitting No. 2.
Bizarrap and Daddy Yankee’s “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 0/66” enters the Global 200 at No. 8 with 42.8 million streams and 2,000 sold worldwide Nov. 7-13 following its Nov. 5 release. Bizarrap earns his fourth top 10 on the chart, after his series’ “Vol. 52,” with Quevedo, reigned for four weeks beginning in July 2022; “Vol. 53,” with Shakira, rose to No. 2 in January 2023; and “Vol. 55,” with Peso Pluma, hit No. 2 in June 2023. Daddy Yankee earns his first top 10.
“Golden” leads Global Excl. U.S. with 84.8 million streams (down 5%) and 7,000 sold (down 6%) beyond the U.S.
As on the Global 200, “Golden” has the third-longest No. 1 run on Global Excl. U.S., trailing only ROSÉ and Bruno Mars’ “APT.” and “Die With a Smile,” which led for 19 and 17 weeks, respectively, in 2024 into this year.
“The Fate of Ophelia” repeats at No. 2 on Global Excl. U.S. after two weeks on top in October; “Ordinary” rebounds 5-3 after eight weeks at No. 1 starting in May; “Man I Need” pushes 7-4 for a new high; and Kenshi Yonezu’s “Iris Out” descends 3-5, after reaching No. 2.
“Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 0/66” begins on the Global 200 at No. 6 led by 39.4 million streams outside the U.S. Bizarrap adds his sixth top 10 on the chart, after “Vol. 52” (No. 1, six weeks, 2022); “Vol. 53” (No. 2, 2023); “Vol. 55” (No. 1, one week, 2023); “Vol. 57,” with Milo J (No. 10, 2023); and “Vol. 58,” with Young Miko (No. 5, 2024). Daddy Yankee notches his second top 10.
Plus, Rosalía and Yahritza y Su Esencia’s “La Perla” debuts at No. 9 on Global Excl. U.S. powered by 27.6 million streams outside the U.S. Rosalía posts her sixth top 10 and Yahritza y Su Esencia, its first. The song is from Rosalía’s new album, LUX, which starts as her first top 10 on the U.S.-based Billboard 200.
