It’s been three decades since us older heads had to endure that train wreck of a video game turned feature film, Street Fighter, and while it basically ended the short but successful career of Jean-Claude Van Damme, it seems like Hollywood will once again attempt to give the classic video game a proper live-action adaptation in the near future.
According to Deadline, a new Street Fighter film is in the works and though the good folks over at Capcom are remaining mum on the project, sources tell Deadline that some pretty big names are being floated around for casting in the upcoming project. Names like WWE superstar Roman Reigns and Hollywood action stars such as Jason Momoa, Andrew Koji, and Noah Centineo are being flown around to star in the feature film though no word on which characters each man would be cast to play as the video game has an illustrious list of fighters who’ve come and gone over the decades throughout the franchise’s numerous installment. Naturally OG characters such as Ryu, Ken, and Guile (whom Van Damme portrayed in the disastrous 1994 film) are expected to be in the film, but we’d really love to see other fan favorites such as Akuma, Vega, and Necro make their big screen debut.
Still, we know little to nothing about the upcoming film as the studio is playing everything close to the chest, but all we can do is hope that they don’t give us another lackluster adaptation as the one we got in the mid 90’s.
Per Deadline:
Reps for the studio declined comment, and the plot of the film remains under wraps. In February, Bad Trip‘s Kitao Sakurai boarded as director, inheriting the project from Talk To Me‘s Danny & Michael Philippou, who attached themselves in April of 2023, following Legendary’s acquisition of exclusive film and TV rights to the Street Fighter IP. The film adaptation is being co-developed and co-produced alongside Capcom, the developer and publisher of the video games. No word has emerged yet on who has written and who specifically will produce the actioner.
We would say it couldn’t be any worse than 1994’s Street Fighter, but truth be told, anything is possible these days.

Top Dawg Entertainment, largely known as TDE, has dominated the music space for years and now aims to take its creative vision to the big screen. With the launch of TDE Films, the longstanding brand is behind the upcoming urban horror film The Zone, with Dallas Jackson tapped to direct.
TDE Films’ Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith shared an exclusive statement with Deadline, and it appears that their approach to music will apply to the overall goal of the burgeoning film division.
“This partnership with 20th Century Fox aligns strongly with our mission at Top Dawg Entertainment – to innovate, elevate, and expand the cultural conversation. Together, we’re building a bridge between music and film that will leave a lasting impact on audiences around the world,” Tiffith said.
Dallas Jackson (pictured above) will be in the director’s chair, employing a script by David Hayter, who has worked on the 20th Century Fox X-Men franchise, with additional writing by Jackson. Joining TDE Films will produce the film along with former Lionsgate boss Rob Friedman. The plot details and cast lineup have not been revealed in detail, but the outlet teased that the film will have a science fiction bent.
Jackson wrote and directed Thriller for Blumhouse/Netflix and performed the same duties for Welcome to Sudden Death for Netflix. Jackson was also the writer and director for The System, starring Tyrese Gibson and Terrence Howard.

It looks like another video game is now about to get the cinematic treatment, but if you were born prior to the 1990s you may not be familiar with the title.
According to Variety, the cult classic ninja game Shinobi is in the early stages of development for the silver screen and has already enlisted Extraction filmmaker Sam Hargrave to helm the project along with producer Marc Platt. As surprising as this choice for a video game turned film is, us ’80s babies aren’t mad as we spent hours on our home entertainment systems slashing and gashing our way through enemies with this game.
Still, we’re not sure if a new generation of gamers and audiences will be as receptive to this as we are given that its popularity isn’t that of say a Super Mario Bros., Mortal Kombat or even Tekken. But with money to be made and other video game films having raked in some big bucks, Universal is looking to bank on an oldie but goodie with their latest project, and at the end of the day it may pay off.
Per Variety:
Universal has enjoyed recent success with video game adaptations, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.4 billion) and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” ($290 million). Meanwhile, Sega has scored with Paramount’s 2020 console-to-screen redux “Sonic the Hedgehog” ($319 million) and the 2022 sequel ($405 million). A third “Sonic” movie will be released in late 2024.
Ken Kobayashi (“Sunny,” “Move On”) is writing the screenplay for “Shinobi.” Platt and Adam Siegel will produce through Marc Platt Productions. Dmitri M. Johnson will produce through Story Kitchen. Toru Nakahara will produce through Sega. Mike Goldberg will executive produce alongside co-producer Timothy I. Stevenson. Universal’s senior VP of production development Ryan Jones and director of production development Christine Sun will oversee the project for the studio.
With Shinobi looking like it’s going to be an animated film, we wouldn’t be mad if they went the anime route as it just feels like that type of video game, but hey, that’s just us.
What do y’all think about Shinobi getting its own feature film? Is there any other video game you’d like to see made into a movie? Let us know in the comments section below.
Lady Gaga, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Zendaya are used to running up against each other on the Billboard Hot 100 and running into each other at music awards shows.
But now they may also be bumping into each other at non-music awards shows. Pop Stan accounts are buzzing about the possibility that these multi-threats could be nominated for acting awards early next year. Oscar nominations are extremely hard to come by, but Golden Globes (having separate comedy and drama categories) and SAG Awards (having both individual and ensemble categories) are a bit easier to crack.

Let’s take a closer look at these pop stars who are hoping for acting nods.
Lady Gaga
Film: Joker: Folie à Deux
Acting Nods: Gaga received an Oscar nod for actress in a leading role six years ago for playing Ally in A Star Is Born. She also received BAFTA and Golden Globe nods for both that role and for House of Gucci (2022). She won a Globe for TV’s American Horror Story: Hotel (2016). And she has received four SAG Award nominations – as lead actress and also as part of the cast of both A Star Is Born and House of Gucci.
Notes: Gaga more than held her own with Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born. If she’s good in this sequel to 2019’s Joker, she could easily be nominated. Joker: Folie à Deux is a musical psychological thriller directed by Todd Phillips, who received three Oscar nominations for his work on Joker – directing, writing and best picture. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, reprising his Oscar-winning role as the Joker, with Gaga joining the cast as his love interest Harley Quinn. Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled for an international theatrical release on Oct. 2, followed by a U.S. release on Oct. 4.
Selena Gomez
Film: Emilia Pérez
Acting Nods: Gomez was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for the third season of Only Murders in the Building. She has been nominated for a Golden Globe in that category in each of the last two years. And she has been nominated for a SAG Award for ensemble in a comedy series all three years the show has been on the air.
Notes: It took a while for the Emmy acting nod to come, but that’s always been a very competitive category, back to the days of Lucy and Mary Tyler Moore. And Gomez had to prove that she was a full partner with comedy greats Steve Martin and Martin Short. Over the course of three seasons, she has done that.
Emilia Pérez is a Spanish-language French musical crime comedy written and directed by Jacques Audiard. It also stars Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir and Édgar Ramírez. The film premiered on May 18 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize and its female ensemble won the best actress award. The film has grossed $4.7 million worldwide since its theatrical release in August.
Ariana Grande
Film: Wicked
Acting Nods: Grande was nominated for a SAG Award for cast in a motion picture for Don’t Look Up.
Notes: Wicked is an upcoming musical fantasy directed by Jon M. Chu. It’s the first of a two-part film adaptation of the stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which received 10 Tony nominations in 2004 (winning three). The film stars Cynthia Erivo and Grande. Wicked will premiere in London on Nov. 18, with a U.S. theatrical release scheduled for Nov. 22. The sequel, Wicked Part Two, is scheduled to be released on Nov. 21, 2025.
Zendaya
Film: Challengers
Acting Nods: Zendaya won two Primetime Emmys for outstanding lead actress in a drama series (2020 and 2022) for her role as Rue on HBO’s Euphoria. The first win made her, at age 24, the youngest winner in the history of the category. The second made her the first Black actress to win twice. Zendaya also won a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a television series – drama (2023) for that role. And she was nominated for a SAG Award for female actor in a drama series in 2023.
Notes: This is a lead role, which would make a nomination harder to land. But she was very good in the sexy and critically acclaimed film.
Challengers is a romantic sports drama directed by Luca Guadagnino, who received an Oscar nod for best picture as a producer of Call Me by Your Name. It stars Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist. The film has grossed $50.1 million in domestically and $94.2 million worldwide since opening in April.
