Tragedy struck in the Dominican Republic this week after a popular nightclub saw its roof collapse, leaving at least 124 people dead and scores more injured. Among those hurt in the Jet Set nightclub roof collapse were two former MLB players and at least one U.S. citizen, according to still-developing reports.
NBC News reports that early Tuesday (April 8), the roof of the Jet Set in the Dominican Republic collapsed as attendees were at the venue to see a performance from merengue singer Rubby Pérez. Among the attendees were politicians, former professional athletes, and government officials.
Rubby Pérez was among those who perished as a result of the collapse. Also among those named who perished in the collapse were Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera, both of whom played in the United States for Major League Baseball. Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the Montecristi province, was also killed in the collapse.
“His energy, positivity, and zest for life were infectious to all who had the pleasure of knowing him,” Dotel’s agent, Dan Horwits, shared in a statement. “We pass along our thoughts and prayers to his entire family as well as everyone affected by the tragedy.”
As rescue efforts continue to persist, the number of those injured remains unknown but could number well over 150 as workers scramble to help survivors left under the roof. It isn’t known yet what caused the collapse, and officials say there is video of the incident that will be included in the investigation.
Current MLB analyst and former player Pedro Martinez says that some of his family and friends were at Jet
Set the morning of the accident and says that he’ll remain “strong” as the situation continues to unfold.
Our warmest thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim of this tragedy.

Authorities have launched extensive search and rescue efforts, with more than 100 individuals transported to hospitals across the city as emergency teams continue working to locate survivors beneath the rubble.
“We presume that many of them are still alive, and that is why the authorities here will not give up until not a single person remains under that rubble,” said Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Center of Emergency Operations.
Among the injured is merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing when the roof collapsed, officials said.

President Luis Abinader wrote on X that all rescue agencies are “working tirelessly” to help those affected.
“We deeply regret the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. We have been following the incident minute by minute since it occurred,” he wrote.
Abinader arrived at the scene and hugged those looking for friends and family, some with tears streaming down their faces. He did not speak to reporters.
An official with a megaphone stood outside the club imploring the large crowd that had gathered to search for friends and relatives to give ambulances space.
“You have to cooperate with authorities, please,” he said. “We are removing people.”
At one hospital where the injured were taken, an official stood outside reading aloud the names of survivors as a crowd gathered around her and yelled out the names of their loved ones.
It wasn’t immediately clear what caused the roof to collapse.
This is a developing story.

Looks like Tekashi 6ix9ine’s troubles are spanning around the globe as the most famous snitch in Hip-Hop history has a worldwide warrant out for his arrest.
According to Diario Libre, the Hip-Hop superstar turned-culture pariah has just had an international warrant put out for his arrest after a Court of Appeals in the Judicial District of La Vega declaring that the “Gummo” rapper has been in “rebellion” outside of the Dominican Republic since June 2024. For those that don’t remember, Tekashi was arrested for assaulting a pair of producers in the Dominican Republic in October 2023.
He was apprehended by authorities at an airport immediately after as he was trying to make a break for it before he could be arrested for his transgressions. After making bail, Tekashi was informed that he was to remain on the island until trial. Making matters even worse on himself the rapper was then arrested for domestic violence but was bailed out of the matter when his girlfriend refused to cooperate with authorities.
While the warrant for Tekashi 6ix9ine has now gone international, Dominican authorities continue to search for him on the Caribbean country as it’s a very good chance the embattled rapper is just hiding out somewhere there. Heck, for all we know he made his way to Haiti to escape Dominican jurisdiction. With all those face tattoos and a rainbow-colored wig on his person, he shouldn’t be too hard to identify.
Truth be told, we hope they catch him. Just sayin’.
What do y’all think about this latest twist in the saga that is the life of Tekashi 6ix9ine? Let us know in the comments section below.

A few weeks ago Tekashi 6ix9ine was arrested in the Dominican Republic for domestic violence, but the embattled rapper might get off scot-free as his girlfriend is unwilling to cooperate with authorities.
Dailymail UK is reporting that Tekashi was released from jail on bond after his girlfriend, Yailin La Más Viral, refused to talk to authorities about the incident that her mother, Wanda Díaz, reported to the police. Looks like Yailin can teach Tekashi a thing or two about keeping your lips sealed. Tekashi was taken into custody on January 17 after Wanda Díaz accused the rapper of assaulting both her and her daughter, Yailin.
When it came time to show up in court and co-sign the claims, Yailin La Más Viral denied her mother’s claims and told Judge Fátima Veloz that Tekashi never put his hands on her.
Per Dailymail UK:
Díaz, who did not attend the hearing because she was feeling ill because of a complication from a cosmetic surgery, accused Tekashi of beating her and Yailin Las Más Viral.
Díaz spoke during a live YouTube stream of Alofoke Radio Show moments after Tekashi was arrested while he was attempting to leave the country and revealed that he assaulted them after she tried to stop him from beating her daughter.
‘One time I was with her, they were arguing, he pushed me, he slammed me because I got involved, because he hit my daughter,’ she said. ‘I was thrown to the ground. (Tekashi’s) security did not do anything. I was there telling him not to continue beating my daughter and he kept on and I got involved.’
Judge Veloz imposed a bail of 30,000 pesos (about $509) on Tekashi which he gladly paid and walked out a free man.
Still, Tekashi is barred from leaving the Dominican Republic until he settles his original assault case that got him stuck over there in the first place. Back in October of 2023, Tekashi was arrested when he tried to flee the country after allegedly assaulting music producers, Cristian Rojas y Nelson Hilario. The most famous snitch in Hip-Hop history got jealous of the two men for spending too much time in the studio with his girlfriend, Yailin.
After he and a few of his friends jumped the two men, Tekashi tried to hightail it back to the U.S. only to get arrested at the airport after authorities noticed there was a warrant for his arrest. No word on when that original case might get settled and Tekashi can make his way back to the States, but best believe no one on this side of town misses having Tekashi out and about in America. Just sayin.’
What do y’all think of Yailin saying Tekashi never assaulted her? Is she speaking the truth or covering for her man? Let us know in the comments section below.
