Culture

The feathers were swaying and sequins were glittering at last night’s star-studded Wearable Art Gala, a benefit celebrating the 5th anniversary of WACO Theater Center, founded by co-artistic directors Tina Knowles-Lawson and Richard Lawson. Inspired by the aesthetics and Black excellence of the Harlem Renaissance era, the benefit is designed to support the company’s artistic and youth mentorship programs through a fine art auction.
“Each year we find a theme that connects us historically with our past,” Richard Lawson told THR. “[We explore] the evolution of African culture in the western world.” Previous themes have included The Lion King and Black Panther‘s Wakanda. But this year, 50,000 square feet of the Barker Hanger at Santa Monica Air Center were transformed into a full-blown Harlem experience. Guests arrived in vintage automobiles and 40-foot-tall backlit backdrops were designed to look like a set in Harlem featuring notable arts institutions like the Savoy Ballroom, Apollo Theater and the Cotton Club.
“As Black people, we do things differently … everything is with flair,” Tina Knowles-Lawson said. “We are fashion. That’s such a big part of the gala and we wanted to create something where art can occur. We want everything to be art.”
Last night’s gala was hosted by Keke Palmer and was a musical affair with a live band on the red carpet, a traditional New Orleans “second line” parade and performances from people including Daytime Emmy Award winner Obba Babatundé. Other notable guests included Tyler Perry, singers Chloe and Halle Bailey, Vivica A. Fox, Lela Rochon, Marsai Martin (who donned an intricate, styrofoam floral headpiece), Lori Harvey, and Magic and Cookie Johnson.
Every member of Destiny’s Child was in attendance — Kelly Rowland stunned in a statement-making red gown, Beyoncé arrived in support of her mother with husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy — and Michelle Williams spoke to THR about the importance of arts mentorship for the youth. “Ms. Tina has been mentoring since I met her in the year 2000. This is what she does,” Williams shared. “Also, this is her favorite era, so when I saw this was the [theme], I knew this was going to be exciting.”
The genesis of WACO began as two separate efforts Knowles-Lawson and Lawson were pursuing individually, but ultimately married themselves to each other when the two came together as a couple in real life.
“I grew up with a mentor that I met when I was 14 and she changed the trajectory of my life by exposing me to the arts and to life in general, so I always wanted to have a community center where kids could come and meet with visual artists and performing artists and just have a place to hang out,” Knowles-Lawson said. “Also, when my kids were little there were two community centers in Houston that I used to take them to, where they really honed their skills and their performing confidence. So I know that it really changes kids’ lives when they have a place like that.”
Simultaneously, Lawson had built an acting school and theater, so “we just decided to join forces and open WACO,” Knowles-Lawson said.
“We both had the same intention in slightly different ways so it was just a natural thing for us to put this together because we were both operating in the space of being of service and developing and supporting and mentoring people,” Lawson said. “WACO is a theater where we have performing arts and have a mentorship program of 100 kids which is growing every year.”
Last night, guests understood the thematic assignment. ESPN correspondent Angela Rye channeled Dominique La Rue (played by Jasmine Guy) in Eddie Murphy’s Harlem Nights, wearing a red, floor-length dress. Rye, who is also the CEO of IMPACT Strategies — a political advocacy, social impact and racial equity firm based in Washington, D.C. — said that the arts can magnify political advocacy efforts in “remarkable ways.”
“Sometimes the only [mediums] that we have to really be able to tell our stories and to advocate in ways that people don’t see as violent is through art and through media,” she told THR. “We can confront issues that sometimes folks are too uncomfortable to touch through those forms.”
Issa Rae, whose multi-faceted Hoorae Media company develops content across the film, television, music and management industries, says that “building our institutions is what separates the now from what was.”
“When I think about previous renaissances, there were specific outlets we [participated in] that weren’t ours. So it was easy for them to wipe us out or say ‘that’s enough of that,’ but I think the more we own our institutions and platforms, the more we can own our voices and the more longevity we’ll have.”
Due to the proliferation of Black images and ownership in entertainment and media today, the Black community in Hollywood and Los Angeles, more broadly, is arguably in the midst of an artistic renaissance. One that echoes Harlem’s a century ago. “I think at that time it was so especially revolutionary because it was a conscious effort to celebrate our art,” Rae says. “We’re constantly looking toward the past to inform the present. It’s just important for us to champion ourselves.”
To that end, Angela Bassett was honored with last night’s Film & TV Icon Award. “I am completely and utterly humbled,” the award-winning actress told THR. “Because what you endeavor to do is to work hard … so to be able to do that and then to be appreciated and supported at this moment for your body of work is very exciting.”

Smile is headed to VOD. The horror film that scared its way to a No. 1 box office debut last month will soon be available on streaming platforms.
Sosie Bacon, Jessie T. Usher, Kyle Gallner, Caitlin Stasey, Kal Penn and Rob Morgan star in the supernatural horror flick about a therapist who endures disturbing experiences after witnessing the suicide of one of her patients.
The film, directed by Parker Finn, was initially supposed to premiere on Paramount+. The studio opted for a theatrical release, and it paid off. Thanks in part to viral marketing stunts, Smile raked in $22.6 million opening weekend and has made nearly $100 million worldwide.

From Tegan and Sara’s return to form to Kelela’s smooth-as-butter new single, check out just a few of our favorite releases from this week below:
Tegan and Sara, Crybaby
No, Crybaby may not be the 10th studio album from an established pop act everyone is talking about this particular week — but that doesn’t make it less worthy of your attention. Canadian duo Tegan and Sara took the sounds that have defined the last two decades of their lives — euphoric pop, grungy punk and earnest folk — and mashed them all together into an all-encompassing project that feels like it was specifically engineered to light up your dopamine receptors. The frenetic energy of “I Can’t Grow Up” bleeds seamlessly into the dark-pop vibes of “All I Wanted;” the glitching, chaotic sounds of “Yellow” offer a perfect balance to an early-career retrospective on “Smoking Weed Alone.” Crybaby encourages you to revel in the sounds of a pair who’ve found their sound yet again.
Kelela, “Happy Ending”
It’s not an easy task to create a song that is simultaneously breezy and invigorating, yet Kelela has somehow managed it. On “Happy Ending,” the latest offering from the R&B star after her return to music last month, Kelela’s voice oozes the sensual vibe she’s curated throughout her career. But the production stands in stark contrast — with a frenetic drum pattern and scattered synth line that permeates the new song, “Happy Ending” sounds like self-induced euphoria that keeps your heart rate climbing.
Jake Wesley Rogers, Love
“Escapist” pop music tends to be the kind that removes you from reality so as not to focus on it — but that’s not what Jake Wesley Rogers is doing. Love, the new EP from the rising singer-songwriter, could be more accurately described as idealist pop music; it doesn’t ask you to disregard the darkness of the world we live in (as shown on project closer “Dark Bird”), but instead wonders why that’s the only thing we’re interested in focusing on. Tackling romantic determinism (“Lavender Forever,”) learning from missed opportunities (“Hindsight”) and much more, Rogers paints the world around him in broad, colorful strokes with this heartfelt EP.
Pvris, “Animal”
Pvris is back, baby. Their latest double single is fueled by contempt and introspection — and while the latter concept is excellently executed on “Anywhere But Here,” it’s on “Animal” that the rock project takes you careening into a rage-spiral with them. Lynn Gunn’s voice seethes with rage on “Animal,” as she furiously fights back against a controlling lover, growling into the microphone that she won’t be told “what I feel, what I do, what I want.” It’s a welcome return for Pvris — be sure to welcome them back with open ears on this absolute banger.
Cavetown, “Frog”
While we would not normally encourage calling your significant other a “Frog,” it does work for Cavetown. The new track from the indie star (which is helping to raise money for LGBTQ organizations) charts his relationship with his girlfriend, and how even after coming out as trans, their love is still the stuff of fairytales. Throw in some double entendres referencing the famed story of a princess and a frog, and you’ve got a bonafide romantic ballad on your hands.
Michelle, “Pulse”
After making headlines with their stunning album After Dinner We Talk Dreams earlier this year, NYC indie-pop collective Michelle is ready to offer fans a coda. “Pulse,” the infectious new single from the band, drips with groove and swagger, as the group details a sweaty night out over chunky house pianos and a bass line that simply refuses to relent. “I feel your pulse from outside of the room/ Feel you radiate a mood,” they sing. “Can you feel my pulse too?” The answer is an assured yes.
Gay Meat, “Bed of Every”
Karl Kuehn’s wistful new song “Bed of Every,” off the upcoming EP of the same name from his new project Gay Meat, is an existential crisis wrapped up into a gorgeously-composed melody. The airy guitars compliment Kuehn’s voice as he croons about moments that have passed him by, intrusive memories of his childhood, and a longing for simpler times. Practically a lullaby for the discontent, “Bed of Every” is the best kind of refrain a weary soul could ask for.

After starring as Jack in Don’t Worry Darling, Harry Styles is gearing up for his next gig as the titular role in Prime Video’s upcoming film, My Policeman.
Styles portrays Tom, an English policeman in the 1950s who lives with his loving wife Marion (Emma Corrin), and forms a close friendship with museum curator Patrick (David Dawson). And then, that friendship gets a little bit more than personal, as Styles’ character questions his sexuality and falls in love with his friend.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Dawson opened up about getting intimate with the pop superstar onscreen. “That was one of the most special things I took away from this project,” he said of making sure they were both comfortable during sex scenes. “Because initially, when you read the script and you know that there are these intimate scenes, you hope that the person you’re going to be going through this process with is someone you can wholly put your trust in and will communicate with you and is void of ego. And I got all of that and more in Harry.”
He added, “There were only about four other people that needed to be with us in that room, and suddenly when ‘cut’ is called you notice that, you know, the DP is there. But we all just had a laugh, because that’s the best way to deal with it.”
Dawson also shared his reaction to when he found out Styles had been cast alongside him in the film. “I think it was after my second audition. But I’ve been lucky enough to work with a lot of high-profile people over the years,” he explained. “But you do think: how strange is life? Because you’ve seen this person as a musician since they were 16, basically. But they made it incredibly easy to put that to one side, within one Zoom call. He’s incredibly down to Earth, and a good Northern lad. You can’t go wrong. We communicated throughout the whole process – it was very collaborative.”
My Policeman will be released in select theaters on Oct. 21, before becoming available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on Nov. 4. Check out the full trailer below:
