Love Renaissance (LVRN) has invested in Jerk X Jollof, an event series dedicated to celebrating Afro-Caribbean culture, Billboard can exclusively announce Thursday (June 6).
LVRN’s investment comes more than a year after the Atlanta-based label and management company itself received an investment from Matt Pincus‘ MUSIC, valuing LVRN at more than $100 million. LVRN’s Jerk X Jollof investment is part of its commitment to developing the Afro-Caribbean entertainment space.

“We at LVRN are excited to expand our reach within the Afro-Caribbean community with the investment in Jerk X Jollof,” said Tunde Balogun, CEO/co-founder of LVRN, in a statement to Billboard. “This is yet another impactful way to further the culture and unify like-minded people from the diaspora through the transformative power of music and entertainment.”
Last year, for the unveiling of Billboard’s U.S. Afrobeats parties guide, Jerk X Jollof founder Brendan Asante told Billboard that the Jerk X Jollof series initially started in 2014 as “an idea in college. Some friends of mine and I just threw a sweaty dance party. Someone brought some jerk chicken, someone brought some jollof rice, and it translated.” Asante and the other founders officially brought the party series to Detroit, Mich., in 2016, and since then, Jerk X Jollof has expanded to cities around the world including Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, New York, Toronto, London, Paris, Berlin, Johannesburg and Accra, Ghana. Uncle Waffles, Skepta, Sarz, Spinall, DJ Tunez and more have all performed at the popular party, while previous all-star attendees include Ayra Starr, Davido, Brent Faiyaz and Chris Brown.
“It was an obvious decision to partner with LVRN in order to broaden the Jerk X Jollof brand,” said Asante in a statement. “The alignment of our vision for the enhancement of Afro-Caribbean culture was immediately evident, and we eagerly anticipate the future of this joint venture.”
LVRN and Jerk X Jollof first collaborated on a party during New York Fashion Week in 2022, an event that was also a partnership with Afropunk. “That one was so wild because Brent Faiyaz [pulled] up to the party. [We brought] him, Kawhi Leonard, Joe Freshgoods through the side door. This s— is so comical because I never thought in a million years that I would be dealing with these dope people that are coming to the party,” Asante previously told Billboard. “From that moment, thinking about when it was a sweaty dance party in a college basement, I think that’s one of my favorite memories. Ari Lennox came through, and I was chopping it up with her before she left. I was talking about how she came to Ghana and how she enjoyed it. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, you should come back.’ Those type of moments happening under the roof of us doing something just gave me a glimpse into what the future could hold for it.”
Last month in Atlanta, LVRN and Jerk X Jollof partnered again on a Memorial Day function that was hosted by local music festival brand Milk + Cookies. Another notable achievement in the partnership is the creation of the Jerk X Jollof Stage at Promiseland Australia, which will take place at Doug Jennings Park in Gold Coast Oct 4-6 following the scheduled Jerk X Jollof parties in Melbourne on Sept. 27 and Sydney on Sept. 29. The Jerk X Jollof and LVRN teams worked with the festival to curate an amapiano stage that would showcase a diverse lineup of the genre’s leading talent including Uncle Waffles, Major League Djz, Focalistic and Tyler ICU, along with Jerk X Jollof mainstay hosts/DJs Jae Murphy, Blakito and V-Live — all booked by Jerk X Jollof.
Pharrell Williams‘ autobiographical film Piece by Piece looks a little different from any of the many musician biopics that have come before it. Mainly, it takes place entirely in the Lego universe, a slice of which was finally revealed in a star-studded trailer for the project that dropped Thursday (June 6).
The teaser opens with Pharrell’s Lego avatar telling the film’s director, Morgan Neville, “You know what would be cool is if we told my story with Lego pieces.”
It then launches into animated, Legoland renderings of the 13-time Grammy winner’s childhood, followed by shots of his musical projects over the years, including the creation of his and Snoop Dogg’s Billboard Hot 100-topping “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” Many of Williams’ past collaborators lent their voices and toy likenesses to the project, including Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes and Jay-Z, whose recognizable laugh can be heard at the end of the trailer.

“I loved music — it was mesmerizing to me,” Williams says in a voice-over in the trailer. “I would see beautiful hues of light cascading. I just thought that’s what all Black kids did — they stared into the speaker like, ‘Whoa.’”
Featuring two new songs by Pharrell, Piece by Piece will arrive in theaters Oct. 11. The “Happy” singer first announced the project on Instagram in January, writing at the time, “Who would’ve thought that playing with Legos as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life?”
In an interview with Variety about the trailer, Williams said that he wanted the film to “be a medium for anyone that just wanted to hear a good, aspirational, inspiring story told vividly, in a way that felt like it could apply to them personally.”
“The joy is seeing it come together piece by piece — pun intended,” he added. “My story never really made a lot of sense to most people. Because most people just choose a lane or two, and I like to cross into different lanes and go into different worlds and take what I feel like is interesting from this place and those experiences and apply them elsewhere.”

With an unprecedented number of openly LGBTQ+ artists making waves in the music industry, a casual observer could argue that representation in the business has reached a new high. But according to workers within it, representation is still severely lacking.
In a new survey published by Queer Capita, in partnership with Billboard and The Orchard, nearly half of LGBTQ+ music industry respondents revealed that they felt insufficiently represented within the industry. The State of the LGBTQ+ Music Industry Professional Survey gathered responses from nearly 300 LGBTQ+-identifying professionals within the music business.
A majority of respondents (77%) said that they felt somewhat or very comfortable being open about their sexuality in the workplace, while 64% of respondents said that the industry fosters a somewhat or very inclusive and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ professionals.
Trending on Billboard
That outlook changed, though, when professionals were asked about representation across all sectors of the industry. While an overwhelming 92% of respondents referred to LGBTQ+ representation as either “important” or “very important” for the industry, nearly half (48%) said they felt the community is somewhat or very poorly represented across all sectors of the business.
“As a manager, I feel good about my particular company. My concern is that as you get into the different formats and genres, many of them are not welcoming, and do not feel like supportive places as musical industries,” one respondent wrote in the survey’s open-ended response section.
When it comes to active support for LGBTQ+ people in the industry, the survey found that a mere 8% of respondents felt that their companies provided “adequate resources” for LGBTQ+ employees. Meanwhile, 21% said that their companies provided no resources to LGBTQ+ employees.
One respondent took that concern further, saying that the burden of support for the community should not fall solely on queer and trans professionals. “It’s critical to tackle unconscious bias for trans people. This should not fall on your resource groups or LGBTQ+ in addition to full-time jobs,” they wrote. “Many times, I was pigeonholed into DEI work on top of my full-time job. In reality, I don’t want to be in DEI, I want to work in music. We need to stop making our LGBTQ+ colleagues do all the work in addition to smashing glass ceilings.”
Additionally, 64% of those surveyed said that they had personally experienced or witnessed microaggressions relating to LGBTQ+ identities in the music industry. Just over a quarter (28%) of all respondents believed they had been passed over for promotions or raises due to their identity.
“I think we have a lot of LGBTQ+-identifying people in the music industry, but certain areas are still more unsafe than others,” one respondent wrote. “Working on the tech side, there are still a lot of regressive ideas about LGBTQ+ people and offensive comments or ‘jokes’ made during working hours.”
So, what can music companies do to bolster support for the community both during and outside of Pride Month? Respondents said that employee resource groups and diversity and inclusion workshops provided by their companies were “actively helpful” in creating a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ workers. When asked what resources aren’t currently provided by their companies that they would like to see implemented, respondents pointed to mentorship programs (19%) and LGBTQ-specific networking events (17%) as their top choices.
“I feel pretty good about representation in our industry but I will say that I would love to see more LGBTQ+ bosses. Leadership could still use a bit of a shakeup,” wrote one respondent. “I’m very thankful that one of my first mentors was an incredibly badass artist manager. She’s an out lesbian who never shied away from her identity on the job. She showed me what it looks like to be an out, confident boss, and how that can win over clients and business partners. I aspire to the example she set still to this day.”
In a statement shared with Billboard, Queer Capita co-president Dan Iammatteo said that the nonprofit’s aim in publishing the results of the survey was to “utilize data as a tool to help keep the industry progressing on issues valued most by our community.” He added that the organization will use the results of this survey to “expand our collective impact by continuing to partner with industry DEI leaders, organizers, and champions to produce events and programs that remain free and accessible to all LGBTQ+ professionals at every level.”
