The upcoming CMT Music Awards are continuing to heat up. Cody Johnson, Megan Moroney, Old Dominion and Parker McCollum + Brittney Spencer have joined the star-studded performance lineup for the fan-voted awards show, which will take over the Moody Center in Austin, Texas, on April 7. The event relocated to Texas last year, moving from its longtime […]

Trisha Yearwood is set to make her first appearance on the CMT Music Awards since 2019, when she will be honored as the first recipient of the inaugural June Carter Cash Humanitarian Award. The award is inspired by the late country music pioneer June Carter Cash, and recognizes an artist, duo/group or industry veteran who has demonstrated an exceptional dedication to community and their fellow artists, embodying Carter Cash’s spirit in advocating for others and in helping others find their voice and use their platform to elevate others. Earlier this year, Carter Cash was at the center of the JUNE documentary, which heralded her accomplishments as a musician, singer, songwriter and entertainer, which extended beyond solely her connection to the work, life and legacy of her husband and music icon Johnny Cash.

“We are thrilled to honor the incomparable Trisha Yearwood with the inaugural June Carter Cash Humanitarian Award at this year’s show,” shared executive producers for the CMT Music Awards via a statement. “Trisha has a unique ability to rally a community, whether that may be families in need with Habitat for Humanity, or uplifting her fellow artists and entertainers trying to carve a path in the industry. She embodies the bold strength of June, who tirelessly devoted herself to service and community, and the namesake for this award. Both multi-hyphenate trailblazers eloquently crafted a script for others to model, letting their hearts and authenticity guide their personal, professional and public lives.”

Yearwood will also perform during the upcoming 2024 CMT Music Awards, offering the live premiere of the self-penned “Put It in a Song” — the first release from her upcoming album. The project will mark a milestone for Yearwood (whose skills as a vocal interpreter of songs have made her a coveted vocalist for many in Nashville’s songwriting community), as the forthcoming album will be a collection of songs co-written by Yearwood. That mission builds on her previous contributions as a writer to songs including “For the Last Time,” which appeared on her 2018 album Let’s Be Frank, and “What I’m Thankful For (The Thanksgiving Song),” which appeared on the 2016 collaborative album Christmas Together with husband and fellow artist Garth Brooks.

In addition to earning three Grammys and three CMA Awards, and notching five No. 1 Country Airplay hits during her career, Yearwood has long been committed to several charitable causes. For more than two decades, she has worked with Habitat For Humanity, including the Carter Work Project and National Women Build Week. In 2016, Yearwood was named a Habitat Humanitarian alongside Brooks. She also established Dottie’s Yard to aid animal rescues, and has been involved with charitable endeavors including being involved with Stanford Women’s Cancer Center, American Cancer Society, Humane Society, Grammy Foundation/MusiCares, Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential, Starkey Hearing Foundation, Susan B. Komen Foundation and more.

Yearwood also works to mentor and champion her fellow female artists, leading the Five Decades, One Voice initiative, as well as working with the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to help preserve the legacies of many of her country music forebears.

Rock and country will collide when Needtobreathe joins four-time Country Airplay chart-topper Jordan Davis for a special taping of CMT Crossroads ahead of the upcoming 2024 CMT Music Awards, where they will also collaborate live for a first-time performance on Sunday, April 7, at Moody Center in Austin, Texas. The CMT Music Awards will air on CBS and […]

The fan-voted CMT Music Awards, slated for April 7 at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, are getting even hotter.
Bailey Zimmerman, Jelly Roll, Keith Urban, Lainey Wilson and Sam Hunt are the first round of performers who will join previously announced performer (and CMT Music Awards host) Kelsea Ballerini on the CMT Music Awards stage, in the heart of the live music capital of the world.

Jelly Roll, Ballerini and Wilson are among the evening’s top nominees, alongside Cody Johnson and Megan Moroney, who each have three nominations apiece leading up to the show. The CMT Music Awards will air on CBS and stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

Last year, Jelly Roll dominated the CMT Music Awards, taking home the most trophies that evening, with three career-surging wins. This year, he is again nominated for three accolades, including the coveted video of the year.

Zimmerman, who is currently on a sold-out solo touring run, will offer a first-time performance of his current single, the top 20 Country Airplay hit “Where It Ends.” A three-time Billboard Country Airplay chart-topper, Zimmerman is also looking to earn his first CMT Music Awards win this year, in the male video of the year category.

Urban will make history when he takes the CMT Music Awards stage, for his 20th performance — marking the most in CMT Music Awards history. He’ll offer a rendition of “Straight Line,” the first single from his forthcoming 12th studio project.

Fresh off her inaugural Grammy win earlier this year, singer-songwriter-actress Wilson will perform her new song “Country’s Cool Again,” which is also the namesake for her upcoming headlining tour, launching in Nashville in May.

Hunt, who is currently on his arena-headlining Outskirts Tour, has earned nine CMT Music Awards nominations during his career, and previously won the breakthrough video of the year accolade. His current single “Outskirts” is in the top 20 on the Country Airplay chart, but Hunt will offer new music during his performance, debuting a new song during the CMT Music Awards broadcast.

The CMT Music Awards relocated to Texas last year, moving from its longtime home in Nashville. The awards show, originally known as the Music City News Awards, held its inaugural event in 1967; the awards celebration has been known as the CMT Music Awards since 2005.

Voting is currently open at vote.cmt.com, through April 1, while voting for the video of the year honor, presented by Hilton, will remain active into the show.

Additional performers and presenters for this year’s CMT Music Awards will be revealed at a later date.

Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Cody Johnson, Kelsea Ballerini and Megan Moroney lead the nominations for the 2024 CMT Music Awards, with three nods each. Last year, Jelly Roll was the evening’s most-awarded artist with three wins, while in 2022, Johnson earned that distinction with two wins.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring the CMT Music Awards on CBS back to Austin in 2024! From the electrifying, sold-out Moody Center crowd to fans packing the streets for our outdoor Congress stage, and Bevo himself walking the Red Carpet, our Texas-sized welcome proved to be one of our biggest and most unforgettable shows yet,” CMT Music Awards executive producers Margaret Comeaux, John Hamlin and Leslie Fram said in a statement. “We’re thankful to our incredible partners at Moody and the City of Austin and thrilled to bring CMT’s signature blend of world premieres, genre-blending surprises and once-in-a-lifetime collaborations back this April!”

Jeff Nickler, sr. vp, Oak View Group, added, “Oak View Group and Moody Center are honored to welcome CMT, CBS and Paramount back to Austin. We look forward to building upon the success of last year’s record-breaking event and to hosting another sold-out audience for Country Music’s biggest party.”

Jelly Roll was the big winner in 2023, taking home CMT Music Awards trophies for male video of the year (“Son of a Sinner”), breakthrough male video of the year (“Son of a Sinner”), and CMT digital-first performance of the year (“Son of a Sinner”).

Meanwhile, artists including Jelly Roll, Kelsea Ballerini, Wynonna Judd and Ashley McBryde provided some of the 2023 awards show’s most talked about moments. Performers and nominees for the 2024 CMT Music Awards will be revealed at a later date.

In 2022, the CMT Music Awards shifted from its longtime home on CMT to CBS, and in 2023, the CMT Music Awards earned its biggest audience yet. The 2023 show was the first to be held at the Moody Center.

Kane Brown and Jelly Roll made history at the 2023 CMT Music Awards, which were presented on Sunday at Moody Center in Austin, Texas. The show aired on CBS for the second year in a row.
Brown became the first person in 20 years to both host or co-host the show and win the top award, video of the year. He co-hosted with Kelsea Ballerini for the third year in a row. He won video of the year for “Thank God,” his hit duet with his wife Katelyn Brown. The last person to accomplish this double feat was Toby Keith, who co-hosted the 2003 CMT Music Awards with actress Pamela Anderson and took the video of the year award for his post-9/11 song “Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American).”

This is the third year in a row that a collaborative video has won video of the year. “If I Didn’t Love You” by Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood won last year. “Hallelujah” by Underwood featuring John Legend won two years ago.

Jelly Roll won both male video of the year and breakthrough male video of the year for “Son of a Sinner.” This marks the fourth time in the show’s history that someone has won the award for the year’s top male, female, group or duo video and a breakthrough award in the same year. In 2005, Gretchen Wilson took female video of the year for “When I Think About Cheatin’” and breakthrough video of the year for “Redneck Woman.” The following year, Underwood took both awards for “Jesus, Take the Wheel.” In 2013, Florida Georgia Line took breakthrough video and duo video of the year for “Cruise.”

Underwood didn’t add to her record-setting collection of 25 CMT Music Awards. She was nominated for video of the year for “Hate My Heart,” but lost to the Browns’ smash. She was nominated for female video of the year for “Ghost Story,” but lost to Lainey Wilson’s “Heart Like a Truck.” This marks the first time in 12 years that Underwood hasn’t won in at least one of those marquee categories.

Wilson, who led the pack with four nominations, won two: female video of the year for “Heart Like a Truck” and collaborative video of the year for her featured role on HARDY’s “wait in the truck.” HARDY and Wilson beat the Browns’ “Thank God” in the latter category, though there was a reversal of fortune in the video of the year category where the two videos again competed.

Zac Brown Band took group/duo video of the year for “Out in the Middle.” It’s their second win in the group video category, following a 2019 win for “Someone I Used to Know.” Rascal Flatts is the top winner in the category, with seven wins, followed by Lady A with five and Little Big Town with four.

Cody Johnson’s performance of “Til You Can’t” on last year’s CMT Music Awards won for CMT performance of the year. Johnson won male video of the year for the smash at last year’s show.

Megan Moroney’s “Tennessee Orange” won breakthrough female video of the year.

Jelly Roll may have performed at the 2023 CMT Music Awards on Sunday night (April 2), but the performer he was most excited to see was none other than Gwen Stefani.

“My second concert ever was No Doubt,” he reveled to Entertainment Tonight on the award show’s red carpet. “We was at an amphitheater, it s–t storm rained, I mean just rain storm, we were mud sliding dancing to ‘Spiderwebs’ — it was awesome.”

Luckily for the rising country-hip-hop hybrid, he got a sneak peek of Stefani’s performance during rehearsals for the show, telling the outlet before her set, “I can’t say anything but I can say she looks like Gwen Stefani. What I seen was a real throwback.”

The throwback turned out to be the singer’s performance of No Doubt’s smash single “Just a Girl” from 1995’s Tragic Kingdom with help from Carly Pearce. For his own performance, Jelly Roll brought his song “Need a Favor” to the stage backed by a full gospel choir.

“This is my first everything,” he continued. “First live TV performance, first TV show performance, first award show nomination, first time I’ve done anything like this, this is a big night of firsts for me … I’m somewhere between nervous and cloud nine, so I’m just, I’m excited man. It feels so good, it’s like the return of the prodigal son, it’s like finally coming home, man.”

During the ceremony, Jelly Roll wound up taking home his very first awards show trophies as well, winning male video of the year, male breakthrough video of the year and the CMT digital-first performance of the year for “Son of a Sinner.”

Chase Stokes has definitely got the role of supportive boyfriend on lock. The Outer Banks star was captured on camera adorably rocking out to Kelsea Ballerini‘s performance at the CMT Music Awards Sunday (April 2) after the couple made their official red carpet debut at the ceremony.

In a clip posted by CMT’s official account, Stokes bops his head and claps his hands to the beat of “If You Go Down (I’m Goin’ Down Too),” which Ballerini performed during the ceremony alongside a handful of drag queens — an act of protest against the recent anti-drag laws in Tennessee. At one point, the 30-year-old actor pulls out his phone and starts filming a home video of the three-time Grammy nominee.

Rumors of the pair’s romance started back in January, with Ballerini eventually confirming the relationship in a February episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast. “I’ve never seen his show, but I just knew of him, and I just swan dove right on in,” she told host Alex Cooper at the time. “His handle is ‘@hichasestokes,’ and I said, ‘Hi, Chase Stokes.’”

In addition to performing and being nominated for video of the year and female video of the year, Ballerini also co-hosted the awards ceremony for the third year in a row. She devoted her opening remarks to those impacted by gun violence following the recent school shooting in Nashville. “Tonight’s broadcast is dedicated to the ever-growing list of families, friends, survivors, witnesses and responders whose lives continue to forever be changed by gun violence,” she said, also telling the audience about her own personal experience with the issue.

“I pray deeply that the closeness and the community we feel through the next few hours of music can soon turn into action, like real action that moves us forward together to make change for the safety of our kids and our loved ones,” she added.

The country star also subtly shouted out her beau in her opening monologue, celebrating country music from “Nashville and Austin to Yellowstone and the Outer Banks.”
